The most fun I have watching is when you two are taking trips in the Big Wave, or going camping in Slayer. The shop stuff is cool, but lots of cars shows are about fixing up cars. You guys taking road trips after you fix up a car and doing the spontaneous stuff is what I think Gnarly Speed Shop is all about. It's a great story of starting from nothing and taking us along on the journey.

    • @GnarlySpeedShop

Great feedback! Some people prefer us working in the shop & doing build content, but we definitely have more fun getting out there and enjoying the cars!

Good job Olivia. As you probably already know, you don't learn how to do bodywork and paint overnight.
It takes time. I'm sure it took Danny time to learn it too. That's so cool that you are learning to do it the right way. Danny is a patient, good teacher. Good on both of you! Well done!
You will make mistakes along the way. Don't be discouraged. So what. They can be fixed, and you will learn.
That's the way it goes. It is a learning curve. No one does it perfect right out of the gate, ever!
You have the right attitude! You will get it!

A little POR-15 tip. If the POR-15 has cured paint/primer does not stick to it that well. IF..., you paint/primer over POR it needs to be done in their stated "finger drag time" for recoat. Otherwise they advise using their "Tie Coat Primer" that adheres to cured POR-15 but also allows other paint to stick to it. I have found that the tie coat primer works quite well. Albeit it is one more of their product that you have to buy. I would also advise using the Metal Prep (phosphoric acid, available at Home Depot) in the bottom of the doors, rinse and thoroughly let dry (a leaf blower works great for that) and then paint the bottom of the inside about 1" up. Even washing a car will allow water inside the door but now the area will be protected.

We are all better at certain things than other things, even if it is working on cars, but a true mechanic can and are willing to try and learn to do everything, just like you are trying to do, but all of it takes time, and some learn quicker or slower than others, just don't get discouraged!👍😁

Everyone has their preferences over what works best, but I’ll tell you something I found works fantastic on stripping paint and rust off irregular surfaces , they make a type wire wheels that are “cupped” with a very stiff and heavier type wire , that have spiraled strands , and a stem for use in hand tools . You of coarse have to be careful and for sure wear eye and skin protection , but I put them in my die grinder, and you can have something like the bottoms of that door down to bare metal in a very short time . Maby give that a try sometime ! I think you’d like the results . And thanks for the videos , they’re awesome to watch !

I know the wire wheel is cheaper, but sand blasting the door perimeter would remove all the paint
and rust. Enjoy all your videos.

  • @mitchhuested6244
    @mitchhuested6244 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I'm kinda late to the party on this video. Liv, there's plenty you can do on the charger. De-scaling that door, just for one. Cleanliness and attention to detail makes a big impact. Removing paint and getting to bare metal for the quarter panels to be welded. Simple vacuuming and rust removal will tell you where holes and weak metal are, so they can be filled or patched. Forming patch panels to replace bad metal is a good skill to have as well.
One thing, you will often find that the wire wheel will line-up the surface rust, take the loose rust off then use sand paper to get to nice shiny metal.
There is also some good rust converter you can use, and it will seal up the metal so no air gets to the metal. Rust needs 2 things, moisture and oxygen, to thrive. Rust converter takes away the chance for oxygen by sealing the metal, then you can paint over it as well. Just a few ideas for you......

When i first started spraying,......i was the exact same way. Timid, worried, scared, and to concerned about the incignificant. So,.....my auto body shop teacher Mr.Beasley said,....."Relax son. Its not that serious. Instead of trying to do it perfect,.......try doing it while simultaneously having fun." Its easier said than done. But its absolutely the key to success when laying down product.

Thanks for sharing this info, I don't see any problem with your content or the timing of how fast/slow projects take. That's keeping it real you know, having jobs is normal and fitting time in to work on projects is how most of us do it. I don't feel you need to explain that but appreciate you guys for saying so ❤.
I know nothing about metal work or welding, would I like to, heck yeah, so I get where Olivia is coming from wanting to be more part of the Charger build and no take away from Danny's hard work/time. look forward to Danny teaching Liv these skills, share it with us if you like or on your own. Likewise Liv teaching Danny some office skills etc. I'm just here to enjoy whatever you guys want to share. ❤️🍻
Glad to see you masked up and looking awesome with your hair up in a pony tail Liv! Great team work guys!
I've never welded/painted and you are doing great Liv, having Danny by your side and you both having patience is the key. You guys are getting me motivated to try this one day on my project truck... 78 Bronco that needs more work than I can do solo, with no expert help at my side.
My vote is still black but with gold flames or pin striping to match the Gnarly Speed Shop logo, or vice versa, gold with black flames/striping.

  • @bcavmechanic

Nice job guys. Great mentoring by Danny and apprentice skills there Liv. I am a mechanic of over 30 years and train apprentices all the time so I know how it goes. I have been doing my best to teach my wife to work on her classic as well. She has a 67' Skylark and we dropped a hot Buick 350 and 4 speed into it together. We have been building a rear axle for it this winter. We both enjoy your shows. I would like to also mention I believe we both very much know your situation on your discussion at the beginning. I try very much to include my wife on projects for her car, but sometimes the timeline of getting it done forces me to just plow through it. She wants to be involved as it is her car. She does very well doing the work but only has so much time available. Ultimately she wants it drivable so sometimes I just have to get it done. By they way. At the beginning of the video where you guys were doing the body hammer work around the door latch Danny mentioned he did not know the name of the counter sunk divets in the sheet metal. Those are called dimples. We use them in aviation sheet metal work for counter sunk rivets. There is a press tool with dimple dies that presses that dimple into the metal. Keep up the good work.

It's great you're wanting to learn more about hands on car stuff, a lot of women even some men wouldn't dare do this sort of thing. Dan will also appreciate the extra help he's could use teaching you this. You take pride in what you do, things can get done quicker now. As you mentioned, most people would just send their vehicle off to a restorer to do bodywork/paint.
AND speaking of paint, I would go "Flat Gold" for the Charger as a choice. Most car guys like to do Flat Blacks, Charcoal or Grey. I like the thought of Flat Gold, definitely be right and give the Charger it's own character from the rest. Glad that you're willing to go other than black. It won't be the same colour as the Camaro, so when you're both out together cruising you will be colours apart with separate identities. I like the fact that this channel is becoming more in-depth with some teaching(s) as well.

  • @Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism

You worry way too much about that door. That thing will last forever now. As soon as I saw all that pitting, I knew high build would fill all that right in. Wont hurt a thing and smooth it right out with a little sanding. You'll never know anything was wrong with it, soon and it will look just like a new panel. I had a far worse door than this on my t-bird. I had to rip out a whole long section and replace it but it was worth it, cus it's cheap. Only body shops need to replace all the panels really, cus time is money. When your doing it for your own ride, there's no harm at all in repairing. No way would wasted that door either.
    Great job guys.

Oh, I already gave my opinion last video but gloss black with rear gold bumble bee stripe baby! Take your time, high build primer is cheap! Just block it out smooooooth as a babies bottom and go full gloss! All the work is in the body work anyway. You've got to paint it either way, so just shoot it and make her sexy! Doesn't have to be perfect.

olivia you should not worry about what content with the channel you work at, like danny said you have your areas you excel at and he has is, i think youve learned so much already, it shows! iam sure you will in time learn the body work etc, that takes time, i think harder than the mechanical end. you have the camera part nailed down , mechanical youve come a long way to. ive heard so many utube channel owners say its difficult to make much progress once a week on a project when they are filming at same time. i think your both a natural together on your channel. you put out alot of different stuff not just in the shop, a varity i guess but good quality content every week. youll get the hang of body work as your channel grows.

Learning to use the tools won't take long Olivia. Knowing which tool to use for which job may take a little longer. Love the dedication from both of you guys. Love the videos. 😮😮
