It's very well-known that flops are often nominated over actual hits. Even so, it ain't that simple to generate box office receipts when you're not given the opportunity to begin with. Take the most dominant genre in cinema today: superhero movies. It's not a level playing field when you're required to cast a white actor for iconic characters like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Wolverine, etc... In terms of male leads alone; Blade, Hancock, & Black Panther are each a decade apart. Hell, Shang-Chi has yet to hit theaters.
