  • In this video I take a viewers advice and remove the last bunk. Removing the last bunk makes for milling logs longer than your sawmill can handle much easier. This is a 17 foot 16 inch diameter popple I turn into a cabin beam. Thank you for watching.

Thanks for this! I just tried to order two extensions from Norwood and they wanted $350 for shipping. So your video was timely.

I was going to purchase them too. This method works great. I ended up making extensions after a while. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I like the way you did this. Seems like a good way to mill a longer support beam. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. It worked well. It's a good way if your mill isn't looking enough. I'm currently in the process of building some extensions.

I've learned nearly everything about milling by watching many hours of videos. The more experience I get the more grateful I am for all the videos I've watched. Hope these help someone else as well

Great job Jerry, glad to see you tried it with the last bunk out 👍. I don’t have the ability to slid the log back as you did, so I just take it off and turn it around, and use the forks to hold up the cant end so the uncut end touching the bunks and the cant end square to the blade, then I just run the mill down to where the cut was and take a blade check on the top of the cut, noting the scale location, then pull back and do the cut, no blocking required in the whole process. But hey like you said we do what we have to do to get the job done.

Thank you. I'll try that next time. That makes perfect sense. Stay safe and happy milling.

How about showing the insulation of that beam. Maybe some videos of the cabin.

Suggest check out Sawing with Sandy mainly for his log bunker for stagging logs to be sawed.
Consider adding additional extension to mill even if DIY with square tube you have cross pieces to use as pattern and measure to make more frame appears on camera to be 2" square tube easy to add on to the trailer jacks available harbor freight just a thought

Using this method you could theoretically mill a 100 foot log!!

Love to have seen the shimming process. Oh well. Great job otherwise👍😎👌

All I did was level the cant and used approximately 2 inches of shims under the cant. Thanks for watching

@@BigelowWoodcraft thanks Jerry. Sounds simple enough. I am set up for 16'+ but a 20 to 24' would be great for the sawmill shed. Still figuring that out since I load with my excavator and need head room for that. My temp setup is working so well I'm no longer sure I need a dedicated shed. Just the saw is inside and track outside. Thanks again for the reply👍😎👌

I'm thinking about extending my shed too. I flip heavy logs with my tractor and am going to run into the same problem. I need the head room to raise it. Not sure I can if I put a 20 for carrier beam. I'm interested to see and hear of your solution. Have a great weekend.

That was a total waste of time moving that end brace...it didn't do anything to help milling that beam...in fact it made the tail weight counter productive as you mill off more slabs, that extra few feet, had you left it alone would help to keep the beam more stable...Had the log been any longer you would have had an issue. Not anything I'd even consider doing to my mill.

Thanks for the input. It was a suggestion from a viewer that I tried. I found it easier. I could lay the cant end on the bunks where before I had to shim the cant. The but end was supported by my forks. This will be the way i do it in the future as well. It worked for me. Several ways to get the job done.
