Hey everyone.
Lance Hedrick saw my Pavoni video some time ago and really liked it. We've been in contact ever since and planned that I would restore an espresso machine for him. Now, the time has finally come, and I've spent the last six months reviving an EMI Ariete from 1964. Lance wants to transform this inconspicuous machine into a real eye-catcher. Compared to the Faema E61 machines, the EMI version licensed by Faema is a bit clunky and underdesigned for a product of the 60s. I'm going to change that and maximize the potential of the original design through color and finish. In this video, you’ll see lots of powder coating, woodworking, gold plating, satin finishing, laser engraving, and much, much more.
As always, I start with the complete disassembly of the machine, including the E61 brew group. From there, it’s all uphill for this great antique espresso machine from Italy.
Make sure to follow Lance’s channel;
/ @lancehedrick
he hasn’t seen the machine yet and will receive it in a few days. After that, of course, the machine will be thoroughly tested on his channel, so be sure to check it out. If there's one person in the world who knows coffee, it’s Lance… Yes, I said Lance.

Disclaimer:
I’m very lucky to have viewers from all over the world. My Italian friends pointed out a mistake in the word 'SCALDATAZZI,' which should actually be 'SCALDATAZZE.' I'm fortunate again because an 'I' can be changed to an 'E,' and since it’s the last letter in the word, there’s enough space to fix it. I will send Lance a mask of an E and color, along with detailed instructions on how to correct the mistake properly. Thank you for your support!
Scaldatazzine
@@fmc000 anyway it’s an amazing restoration. And the video is super great 💪
@@eugeniod1986 That is another option, but if you search for picture of the original is scaldatazze
Beautiful. The video was not too long. The end was fantastic!
Non credo fosse tazzine perché era dalla parte del beccuccio per il vapore per il cappuccino 😊
That’s a million dollar work of art. I love espresso (here through following Lance) but my heart broke as coffee started to run through the piece. I wanted it to rest on velvet forever but as John A. Shedd famously said, “A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.” Sail on beautiful machine. Amazing.
The scope and scale of this restoration project is absolutely incredible. You remain one of the best restoration channels on TH-cam; your attention to detail and the quality of your restorations are top notch. Thank you for all your hard work!
Thank you
What a masterpiece!
No, the video isn't too long.
Yes, I love assembling as well, this part isn't too long and never should be shortened.
I'm completely overwhelmed from your phantastic skills. Thanks for showing us this incredible journey and taking us with you!
Greets and Prost!, Achim
In my opinion, it's the best you've ever done. You turned an institutional looking beast into something truly beautiful. Adding inside lights was a nice touch.
I never seen a restoration project with so many disassembled parts ! You made an extraordinary job Lucas 👏
Hey David, thank you very much and nice Video you posted yourself today.
The video makes it look so easy. Sanding and polishing metal to a mirror polish is hell. Amazing "restoration". Far better finish than the manufacturer ever attempted.
The manufacturer has to make some profit; the - once - new machine didn't look that bad either.
@@juergenlohse6902 I don't know if you have priced out new espresso machines but the manufacturers make plenty of profit ;)
@@juergenlohse6902 I prefer the look of the original. Still, it was a good restomod. Excellent work.
Words cannot describe how awesome this restoration is. The amount of work seems gargantuan. Kudos for pulling it off. Really impressive!
The video wasn't too long, especially for the artwork you created with this restoration.
As an Italian and a coffee lover, I thank you for making this E61 so memorable.
this isn't a restoration but art ❤
I could’ve quite easily watched more than a hour of this truly remarkable restoration
If there's anything that I love in a restoration video, it's seeing the process of powder coating. To see how it changes in the oven when it heats up the baking process is just awesome.👍🏽
I certainly understand why the video was an hour long but it was worth it to watch a complicated piece of equipment be disassembled, made perfect, and reassembled with extra components. Thank you for this video, I enjoyed watching it.
What a huge project, beautiful restoration of an old classic machine. This deserves the hour long video!
You are just amazing! I have never seen such a talented person like you before. Being able to handle with all of these tools and different steps of working is unbelievable. You are by far my favorite TH-cam channel. Best regards
Probably your best restoration so far, truly amazing !
Several of my TH-cam channels are about specialty coffee (Hoffman, Morgan, Hedrick, European Coffee Trip, Lifestyle Lab, ...) and renovations (My Mechanics, Cool Again, Mister Patina, TysyTube, Old Things Never Die, Not Terrible...) -- well, and also physics and Italian because why not -- so this video was just perfect! Gorgeous! Beautiful! This is a true master work. Loved every minute. What a great Sunday morning. Just hope that others follow the lead!!
Thank you! Expect a video on this on my channel soon!
@@LanceHedrick A message from Hedrick himself! This was a great Sunday. 😊😊😊 Waiting impatiently for the video.
The sheer amount of sanding and polishing required to get this machine from where it was to the final result speaks to your psychological fortitude.
I do so love your videos. I am a repairer (bikes mainly, but also other things, at our local 'Repair Café' ) and they inspire me to do a better job. I go through episodes of depression and hopelessness, (it's a long-term condition) and your videos remind me that if you are methodical, and do one thing at a time as well as you are able, you come up with a result, after much work, of something that is useful and beautiful. So thankyou for that. p.s. I liked your La Pavoni video so much that I went out to look for a 'pre-millenium' Europiccola, but couldn't find one. But the local importer was doing good deals on new ones, so I bought one, and spent a fair bit of money 'tweaking' it to get it back close to how the classics were. It's the best coffee I've ever made! Thankyou again.
Absolutely amazing restoration.
Both the video and the restoration are works of art. Just wow!
Not very many projects make me tear up. This one did. The before and after were so stark and gorgeous. Dr Beer, I was unaware of how long this was until you mentioned it at the end. Spending time with people you like is never too long. I was riveted throughout.
When you first showed the machine, I had to laugh. I thought "How many espresso machines do they need?" then you said who you were doing this for and my heart melted. What a wonderful thing to do for a friend. The love, care, and fidelity you show are present throughout the whole video. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this wonderful show.
Es tut mir leid, dass ich nicht den gesamten Kommentar auf Deutsch verfasst habe. Es war schwer genug, auf Englisch aufzuschreiben, was dieses Video für mich bewirkt hat. Vielen Dank!❤
Vickie you can Post and write such heartwarming feedbacks in any language and I would find a way to translate.
This was, by FAR, one of the most beautiful restorations I have seen. You truly have a gift. Thank you for sharing it with us!
Absolutely beautiful. Those wooden pieces are to die for. Such gorgeous grain! And I love the blue paper and resin and veneer plywood. You're an artist.
Dr. Beers, to say that this was impressive work would be a vast understatement. You used new camera tricks, new technology, a whole lot of patience (amen brother) and all of your many skills to turn this humdrum coffee maker into a work of art. Bravooooooooooooo!
As a coffee nerd who enjoys restoration videos, I can only apreciate your work !!!
I have to admit, I had no idea what you were refurbishing until the very end. However, I also have to admit an amazing project where nothing was over looked. I am sure this took many, many hours to accomplish and certain multiple days or longer as well. But the end results speak for themselves. Well worth the watch for the enjoyment of seeing such refurbishing efforts in action. Bravo sir, Bravo!
Watching this restoration made my morning! I am smiling and feel cheered up after the beautiful after pictures
Absolutely one of the best restorations I've ever seen on TH-cam sir! Stunning work is an understatement!!
@@SST11B wow, thank you very much
I've never seen a grouphead without the chrome plating. Looks beautiful!!
Wow, a single group machine of that size and with a single boiler? What a beast. Apparently that's a rare variant, too.
Here's the translation of your text into English:
"I shouldn’t be surprised, after following your channel for so long, but once again, 'perfection' is the only word that can describe this project. I know the channel might suffer from having long gaps between posts, but… my God, it’s absolutely worth it. I enjoy long videos, but I understand it requires a huge amount of editing and production work, on top of the insane amount of restoration work a project like this entails. Sir, you are still the best on TH-cam Restoration... by far. I'm sharing it now to support the channel as much as possible. Congratulations once again. I don’t know why I’m surprised when I see The GOAT at work."
Oh my, thank you so much
Amazing craftsmanship!!
Supongo que el nivel de satisfacción que uno debe tener al terminar un trabajo así, es inexplicable. Te felicito, el nivel de perfección alcanzado es superlativo.
Te mando un abrazo desde Argentina.
I don't drink coffee, but this restoration have me wanting to. Damn what a beautiful restoration.
What a marvelous work of art, that thing belongs in a museum now! The dedication at each step shines in the finished product.
I love to watch restoration videos, above all you are the best in my opinion. Using the correct tools for the work you are doing and showing each step in a logical method. It is a joy to watch your work Sir!
Thank you so much
You are truly a Da Vinci of restoration and creative invention. This is not only art, you are the Rolls Royce of restoration channels. Your videos are never too long, always left wanting more. Bravo, a job most beautifully done.
Wow. So much work and no shortcuts taken. Even some mods added. Great job! I was skeptical about the color choices and the wooden knobs, but the result looks absolutely amazing.
The brass polishing work is so impressive. So much of the work didn't even make it to the final cut. I am in awe of your patience and craft
Wow... great result and one of your best restorations. 👍
Now I want to see Lance Hedrick testing it. He surely will brew something very tasty with this machine.
Pro tips: Use an inline water filter on your supply line. Always use filtered water. Use Puro Tabs to clean/backflush the brew head often. Once a year, descale the boiler and lines by filling it with a solution of water and food grade citric acid crystals. Flush.
Get a good burr grinder. (I use a Rancilio Rocky)
Excellent rig.
Absolute amazing restoration and rebuild. I remember these old machines in cafes & restaurants back in the 60s & 70s they looked so art Deco not just functional but they were a work of art which added to the total cafe atmosphere & culture. No this video is not too long watched every minute.
A masterpiece of restoration and improvement on the original. It’s an eye-catching work of art now.
I especially loved the chemical gilding.
Not only have you beaten the TH-cam algorithm into submission, you have also firmly put Mr. Patina on notice ! 😂
GUT GEMACHT 🙌🙌
I consume a LOT of restoration videos and have subscribed to your channel for quite some time. I have to say that rarely does a before/after reveal literally take my breath away, but this one truly did. The transformation was absolutely stunning. I can't imagine the hours you put into this. No, an hour is not too long for a project as complicated as this one must have been. Lance is awfully lucky to have this beautiful machine heading his direction. Nicely done sir. Nicely done.
Ahh, this explains where you were! Well done keeping track of the multiple parts and restoring it so beautifully 😊
Good sir... I am in awe of this! I'd only known the name Ariete as an Italian Army tank. But this restoration was absolutely amazing. Your attention to detail and artistry shames all other restorers. You improved on the original. I see you filed down original casting marks for a smoother finish, and there is lighting in the interior that adds interest to the works. The wood knobs replacing the original Bakelite (?) are quite nice and give a more pleasing and "organic" look. The color scheme you gave it makes it perfect for my kitchen. Blue and gold feature heavily in my kitchen. In fact, I'll give you my address so that you can send it over. LOL. How you managed to understand the complex workings and every part without going mad is beyond understanding. Words fail me.
Now, as for your beer review... I've only ever appreciated one Italian beer and that is Peroni, which is a credible lager. This one that you present you did compare to a hefeweizen, which I have never had a taste for. But I do like that you reviewed an Italian beer after this extraordinary restoration of an Italian machine. It was a nice homage. If you ever have a chance, I would like your opinion on Königsbacher Pils from Koblenz which was our standard when I was growing up in the Hunsrück. We had Tucher and Bitburger as well, but Königsbacher was the local favorite.
Thank you so very much for this. I hope you enjoy this machine for many years.
@@rtyrsson thank you very much for your incredible feedback. Since I grew up in Koblenz I can tell you that I always Was team Königsbacher. Still don't like Bitburger today. The best one Königsbacher had was the Zwickel. It's sad that it closed now, but that was for seen.
BTW i did not like Koblenzer at all
@@NTRprojects I was young so my memory is iffy, but I did always love their pils. I lived in Beltheim, up the hill from Kastellaun just south of Koblenz down highway 327.
Je ne commente pas souvent les vidéos sur la chaîne, mais là c'est vraiment MAGNIFIQUE ! Bravo !!👌
I love watching restoration videos to relax. Restorations of "Not Terrible" are always a highlight. But this project tops all previous ones. Really fantastic! Thanks for the great content. ❤
What an amazing, meticulous restoration. Bravo! Your attention to detail on every single piece of this thing, inside and out, is impressive. Beautiful color choices too. Fantastic work!!
That's a sweet pump you put in it, I might add 😉 without a doubt, the most beautiful FG304 mod I've ever seen.
I'm glad you got the pump working and were able to use it as part of this project ❤
What a splendid job, total respect and for the video too: no music no blabla...very good filming and NOT too long at all . Vidéo à déguster comme un bon café.
What an absolute masterpiece!
These are the kind of restoration videos even my wife would watch...
Greetings from austria!
Amazing. I’m blown away. 🔥
What a spectacular restoration! One hour passed in few moments, thanks to the excellent work, both on the restoration and on the film making sides. Thanks for your commitment in restoring the coffee machine in this unique masterpiece!
Absolutely amazing, Dr Beer.
This is like "My Mechanics" level. So well executed. It turned out just gorgeous. While the length of the video is longer than your usual, it works just fine for me. Not sure you could have documented that level of intricacy in a shorter length of time.
Again, well done. Danke sehr!
Sarah
WOW! Absolutely amazing restoration! A work of art!
Your level of skill, craft and dedication is truly terrifying. Much respect to you, Sir. An outstanding result.
That is probably the most amazing restoration in the history of amazing restorations, it should be in the Louvre museum above the Mona Lisa.
A ce niveau, ce n'est plus de la restauration, mais du "Grand Art".
Sincères félicitations, cordialement, tg
Out of every restoration video that I have ever watched, this is the best by far. If anything, I would have painted the wooden handles black. You asked what part I loved most about the video, well it is the beautiful pipe work and polishing that we cannot see. I would make an additional cover out of either glass or acrylic that shows the insides of the macchina. Overall this is the best ever. I wish I could hit the like button 100 times. Ciao brother. Greetings from Naples Florida. ❤
You turned that into a real piece of art. Beautiful.
Well done your craftsmanship is absolutely amazing. An old machine is brought to life again with a new, even more beautiful beginning!
Above and beyond with the polishing! Great job ❤
An hour long?! This will require several 🍻
I think that is the most impressive restoration I've ever seen. Absolutely incredible craftsmanship. I'm just truly blown away at your work. I'd love to see a video of Lance's reaction when he first saw the restored espresso machine. Well done sir!
it comes back to life with a more attractive and luxurious appearance, the result of your artwork is indeed the best~malaysia boy🇲🇾
THANK YOU for this video! I have been trying to figure out how to recreate the ridges on the knobs for years. Brilliant use of the jig
You've totally outdone yourself. Didnt think I like the wood parts on the machine, but this looks gorgeous. Very well done, keep up the great work.
A very entertaining restoration my friend. Hours of work and unlimited patience make you a true restorer. Well done.
Those colors are just phenomenal. Absolutely outstanding work.
The video was not too long! My favorite part is hard to choose but I guess the attention to detail and my appreciation of all the brass restoration.
Incredible work! Incredible video!
What an incredible amount of work you put into this project, the result is a work of art.
Beautiful work and incredible result! I cannot imagine the hours spent on this compared to the one hour of joy you have given us. Thank You!
Bravo!
Lovely work. Amazing to see it all come together so quickly, knowing how many hundreds of hours went into all the details.
Breathtakingly fabulous... nomatter what errors in Italian. I could have watched for hours more. This guy Lance must be a very good friend indeed. Many thanks. Tom (from France)
I'm a lucky guy!
Prepare yourself to get more youtubers asking for restorations. You have outdone yourself, what a master piece! Only your coffee skills, man… :D

Amazing!!! ❤ well done!!!
Man that thing is so beautiful now.

You "made plywood"... Ok, I've seen it all now. Amazing work.
Absolutely gorgeous, could watch you restore old beauties like this for ever. Love the changes you made as well!
Nice work getting that glass piece off without breaking it. That would’ve been the first thing I broke.
What an incredible restoration!!! Love your work, and definitely not to long! I really like how you brought the machine back in its normal material! Better and nicer than it ever was for sure
Wow einfach der Wahnsinn!
Die Maschine ist der absolute Knaller geworden. Finde die Farben passen einfach perfekt zu einander und mir gefallen auch die Logos sehr gut. Damit verschmilzt das Alte mit dem Neuen.

Wonderful tough restoration.
Now that looks amazing. Amazing restoration. Excellent work.👍🏽
Wonderful job, both with the restoration and the video. It was not too long. You are a true artist. Thank you.
magnifique et pas trop long. Un travail de passionné, j'ai adoré. Il manque l'odeur du café à la fin...
beautiful and not too long. A work of passion, I loved it. The smell of coffee is missing at the end...
