Davy Jones (Monkees) "You & I (Promises Not Broken)"

This 1994 incarnation of “You & I (Promises Not Broken)” (see footnote below) started in Davy Jones’s den in Pennsylvania. He had a reel-to-reel recorder (shown in the video) set up to make demos, and he just let this one rip (it really is a “take one” like he says). I took the track to a studio and added the band parts, then added the “street café” sounds to give it ambience (and to cover up glitches on the home demo). Our arrangement referenced a Nilsson style (different from the original 1976 Dolenz Jones Boyce & Hart soft rock version, which I hadn't heard). Months later Davy presented our take to The Monkees for the 1996 JUSTUS reunion album, and they re-did it with gusto, with big vocals and Peter Tork’s sweeping bass lines. The footage in this video is from a rare live appearances of just the four original Monkees in a one-off appearance doing this song (the audio was unusable). Footnote: Song title not to be confused with The Monkees’s hard rock “You & I” on the 1969 INSTANT REPLAY LP.

Thanks for tuning in. When David & I did this I had not heard the DJBH version, so this was all from scratch. IMO The Monkees version in the best (with Peter's walking bass line), but all the versions have their assets.
