They gave us some of the most memorable pop music that continues to be appreciated generation after generation; they don't need the Hall's validation as their timeless recordings have been embraced by people all over the world for decades.

@@TheOlskool4ever To that point, why would any serious musician WANT to be in a Hall of Fame with judgment so poor they induct "artists" such as Eminem, Notorious B.I.G., and, undoubtedly one day, Kanye West...? Dolly spans a variety of genres and is well-deserving of any Hall that will have her. Based on Mike Nesmith's contributions, The Monkees would likewise be a sound choice for induction into the Country Hall of Fame. Don't misunderstand me -- I'm not saying The Monkees don't belong in the R & R Hall of Fame (they should have been inducted long ago), I'm simply saying the Hall's standards for its honorees is largely pedestrian. I don't know anyone who takes Hall inductions and Grammy wins seriously these days. Consider this: Bob Dylan has 10 Grammys to his name; Kanye West has 24...

@@lpquagmire3621 Because they too should be recognized for their contributions to the art and I'm not going any further because these conversations tend to turn racial in nature. There are so few acts that classify as "Rock & Roll", the Monkees are more "pop" than Rock but nevertheless, my point is, there are artist in the HOF whose accomplishments aren't nearly as impactful as the Monkees but are in...LET THEM IN. I truly believe that even after all this time, they don’t get (or understand) the respect & the high regard many, many of us hold them in…. it’s so very sad. They (Peter, Micky, Mike & Davy) really are better than they think they are / think they were….

Sadly they don't. And I feel the reason why for that is when they had their first concert in Hawaii back in 66, when they played it was not quite like the album if you will. Despite other groups like The Beach Boys using session musicians, for some reason they were targeted instead.

You’re so right; they were kids when self- appointed, non- musician arbiters of what is “real” rock music (see: Jan Wenner Rolling Stone) were brutal to anyone who did not fit the profile. I do believe there are RRHOF inductees who also have received a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame, {as have The Monkees.} The Monkees should as has been said over and over, they do deserve a place in the museum's hallowed halls as well. It took a write in campaign to get The Monkees their star, {which I had the honor of seeing them receive it in person!} Maybe that's what it takes to get them inducted. At least, Michael should be, {if he isn't already,} inducted into the Songwriter's Hall Of Fame.

The best songs that the monkees recorded, both their original compositions and the ones written for them by other writers, could really have only been written in the 1960s. There was something in the air itself back in that decade that somehow got transferred to the music being written and recorded. There will NEVER EVER be another period like then for sheer creativity, ambition and adventurousness in the arts, music most especially. The Monkees, though they were ridiculed and even reviled in their day, are now rightfully recognized as having issued some of the greatest and most enduring pop music of all-time and definitely were one of those bands, "prefabricated" or not, who embodied that hard-to-define yet nonetheless very REAL magic that the music possessed in that era. Mike, Peter (RIP), Mickey & Davy (RIP) you will never be forgotten for what you created by those of us (and there are LOTS) who know and appreciate greatness when we hear it.👍

The most memorable night of Mike's music, he gave his all, little did we know just 3 weeks later he would pass away among the stars in a pink Cadillac to Rio. His tears were real as his heart was enjoying his finest moments with his fan base and more. I like to think Phyllis was there to hold his hand, and walk with him in a bliss of remembrance of best days gone by, he never stopped loving her. ❤ now he has eternity to make it right, love the one who with grace left the marriage with sadness, but always walked with her head high, above the pitfalls of the machine that ruins so many lives, marriages, and Family's. With the grace of his higher power, committed life long Christian science following under his belt, he now has the rewards of total love, and knows the meaning of life to it's fullest. All family members who preceeded him in death, the wait is over, the heavens are brighter, perfect body and soul for eternity. He sings the music still and fills his heart with pure joy, and as family members in time join him the music continues and all souls rejoice in forever happiness and love. No blame. Hate, pain, or unhappy days. And let's not forget his forever joys in his life, the companions that always loved and was there no matter what life threw at him, his joy, his love, his faithful companions bar none
Roy and Dale. How heavy his heart was as he missed them. Coming home to unconditional love each night, except on the road, he was a kind, loving, attention giving, human and felt each dogs heart beat as he held, petted, and played with his 2 "pawferect" companions. We met at a local music festival he was performing at and I had my Jordie then 14 with me as he's my companion dog. Mike was so gentle and they were sharing a moment in time my dog had no idea who he was. But the point I'm making is when it came to dogs his heart melted, just the way he hugged and petted him was a sight of pure joy. I would have loved to see The Second National Band start their planned concerts come to be the hottest band.I'm so happy his children/ adults now carry on some of his valued and unfinished music completed and perform it for us. And keep his music and 2ed band going as the success they became, not just a family band, but another of Nez's future . To his kid's he was dad, to the 1,000's of his Mike Nesmith followers. You enriched us above and beyond that any one man could do. He had many messages to share besides get your car off my lawn....lol....his blood was a Texan threw and threw, yet he also adapted to the Californian beach life style for years. He deserves and earned all the accolades that came with it his success in life. I will miss you so much it still doesn't seem real your passing. But I'll never regret making it happen to see you at the Greek. I remember your girls concert there and how wonderful it was to end there as well, a full circle of life, dear freind, and to my Monkees family as a whole, your are the best family in the world and we will continue until the last Monkee song is sung alone to the faithful followers. And to Micky thank you for letting Nez shine on his last Greek concert.
A true loving brother, your tears might be privately
Shedding for your brothers who have passed, but their with you in loving spirit no doubt at all.

Truly beautiful and hard to watch at the same time, seeing the remaining two on stage, yet so frail. My Grandfather died in 1981 on September 12; and then my cousin who was born on a Sept 12 and named after my grandfather ---committed suicide a few yrs ago. He was like the older brother i never had. All this hit me as well as the loss of Davy, Peter, and now Mike as i watched this touching video......I thank God for the music and lives of The Monkees. The figured largely in my early teenage life. As a musician they were an early influence. Those were their actual voices and Nesmith and Tork did play on those recordings as well.

What a profound song. I will send it to my one and only sibling. Not for her, but for me. She will never understand. All our lives she set me up for failure, and she laughed while I cried. Amazing how someone who never met me understood and had more compassion than someone I looked up to at one time. I made excuses for her, not wanting to believe that my pain brought her joy. Thank you, Michael, for your tears, and for this song. I will tuck it away in my heart where it will afford me some measure of comfort and peace.

Life's a funny thing, isn't it Mike? Thank you and the rest of the Monkees for the joy you had put in my childhood. (I grew out of you all by the time I was 12, btw). While we thought time was dragging on it was actually flying by. Peace.

Maybe we get so emotional because unlike any particular generational love specific to a single time period it is that these guys kept appealing to all the generations so it is a thing shared and almost closes the generation gap somehow.

Mike's death hit me hard because
My dad died Feb 24 2012 and Davy died 5 days later on the 29th. (The day of my dad's funeral).
My mom died Feb 18 2019. Peter 3 days later on the 21st. At the time I joked thank God I don't have anymore parents. Then Mike died. I lost most of my childhood that day. RIP

Many Nesmith compositions stand shoulder to shoulder with the great songs of any era....Peter and Micky's songs really fit the times, and still resonate today. Davy was growing as a co-writer and may have flourished if he dedicated more time to it. The Monkees continue to be short changed in musical history. The record companies' curious song choices for albums when better tunes were 'in the can' helped paint a different reality of the depth of the true talent they had.

I find the Davy-penned songs on the 'Missing Links' album (If You Have the Time, War Games, Time and Time Again) more listenable than a lot of Micky and Peter's output. His songs on the reunion albums were pretty corny, though. It's Not Too Late was his last great song.

That's one of the biggest blunders in Monkees history! Also don't get when they had so many great Nesmith songs in the can they chose 'Never Tell a Woman Yes.'
