"Big Town Winding Down" by Johnny J. Blair + Richard Devletian + Felipe Torres@ftdrum456
A spoken word piece, "Big Town Winding Down," is my impression from conversations, images, scenes, and stories of urban life--in particular, a dream I had in which George Gershwin's Concerto in F kept looping against a black & white "movie" of 1920s New York City. Rather than feel overwhelmed by metropolis, I harmonized with it and let it absorb me. The music bed is from Cafe Khufu live improv sessions in lower East Side Manhattan, with the lovely Frisell-ian guitar work of Richie Devletian and the spot-on dumbek-beatwork of my friend and colleague Felipe Torres. It’s track #6 on my I LIKE THE STREET album. Download the audio here: johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/big-town-winding-down-2 This video contains footage by Natalia Rostyn & Vecteezy.

"The Girl With The Lena Horne Smile" (live) Johnny J. Blair "Singer at Large"
มุมมอง 1145 หลายเดือนก่อน
I wrote this Latin-y pop song as a valentine to my soulmate and true love, Uma Robin Mackey, as she has a big and remarkable smile that she blesses the world with every day. The idea for the lyrics came from looking at album covers and photos of Lena Horne, the legendary actress, singer, and Civil Rights activist. Both women bear a resemblance. If you’re familiar with Lena Horne’s career, you’l...

They were fans of The Hollies and their set included the hit “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress” as well as the rarely covered songs “Survival of the Fittest” and “Gasoline Alley Bred.” These cuts feature the lead vocals and piano of Chris Jones. As filmed for PBS at Benedum Theatre w/myself, Jessica Pacheco, and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. For me this was an auspicious occasion on several counts-including that, for the first time, I played guitar on songs that I usually played bass or keyboards on. This is a passion piece of mine, inspired by my experiences being in fellowship with diverse people-“The Grand Company, No more missing harmony.” Everyone-black, white, brown, old, young, big, small-brings something to this big table called life, and it’s a gift to be handed even the tiniest role in God’s Kingdom called Earth. "In Your Mind" a Bryan Ferry song played acoustically by Johnny J. Blair "Singer at Large"
มุมมอง 1899 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is my off the cuff cover of the title song from Bryan Ferry’s 4th solo album (made when Roxy Music was taking a break). Some say it’s a “secret highlight” of Bryan’s early career. For me, "In Your Mind" is one of his masterworks as a songwriter. The song drew me in when I’d just turned 20, and it gave me a sublime sense of place in a time when life was uncertain for me. The original had so...

Happy souls sang in earnest when I joined the San Francisco Temple United Methodist Church Choir to do this song, made famous by Sam Cooke & The Soul Stirrers. Written by Lucie E. I met Jeff in 2001 a couple of years after my mom passed. I think his mom had passed around the same time. I'll never forget the night we met. He had a thing for middle eastern dancers and the first question he asked me was, "Do you dance?" and of course I said "no" because at that moment I didn't, but eventually, I did. The last time I saw Jeff was 2016 to pick up some of my things he'd been storing for me in his garage while I traveled. Something told me to go and get my stuff, now I know why. I had no idea he'd pass in 2020. God bless and keep you Jeff. You were quite isolated in your final years and I respected your wishes. I used to love when you'd call me and say, "Wanna go get a brewski?" I'll never forget those times. You taught me so much about music and philosophy. Hope I see you sometime on the other side of the veil.

He brought to someone, back in the early 70's to have it recorded, and was rejected for being too Jesus? I read about it, and I've been praying, someone, maybe in David's family, maybe had come across this song? I felted, maybe, it would be a great song , to raise support, for his Daughters, D.J EMF. That supports his HORSES ❤ MY PRAYERS, is that it could, be found? What a joy that would be! I feel David would not trash, his beloved Beautiful, soulful effort, such as this ❤ I'm praying, it will be found? David befriended me back in 1977.
