I live in NC, cops here are trained to escalate. They are 100% quota based employees regardless of what they say. They wanted to arrest and they manipulated the situation to meet their goals. Cops here are animals

I wish I was a bystander who was there, those cops would have had another person to worry about. You mess around with a helpless kind animal, I will make you find out. No matter who you are. People who are like that shouldn't be cops, it shows how little they value life and they lack compassion. I could care less about feelings and how they were hurt but they straight up need to have a true compassion for others in order to be effective.

This made me tear up. Brooks, the female cop, created the whole situation. She refused to accept that maybe her interpretation of events was wrong and didn't want to hear his side of things. Everything that happened, even indirectly like the death of the dog, was her fault. She is an example of the worst kind of cops: those who see the poor or homeless as less than people and thus not part of the community they serve. Her ego trip caused needless suffering and the death of an innocent animal.
Brooks of all people (black and female) should understand the heartbreak of being marginalized and thought of as unimportant and less than human. Yet here she is inflicting the same pain on a disabled vet.

The “you’re disrupting traffic” line is hilarious. She has her car parked in a traffic lane, and then another officer pulls up and parks in the middle of the freaking intersection.
It is an outrage that the Sgt is not in jail. He lied about refusing to ID, he lied about getting bit and he lied about the dog being aggressive before using his taser. Then again harassing the vet on his own facebook page using the official police account makes me think that whole PD is rotten

As a vet with PTSD this video triggered me and I am shaking right now. If I were in that situation I would have reacted much worse than he did and would be lucky to be alive.
I'm not a vet but I do have ptsd from being sa'ed several times in my early teens and it was heartbreaking to see sunshine try to comfort her owner like she was trained then get tased because of it. That officer should've gotten charged and animal cruelty and kicked off the force.
Because theyre nothing but a bunch of hypocrites! "Rules for thee but not for me" ive been pulled over for having a headlight out (there was actually nothing wrong with the vehicle) and the officers cruiser had a headlight out. I told her that they work fine & when she came back from double checking i told her that She has one out though, thats when she claimed to smell Marijuana.
Too bad these "officers" weren't held accountable for the dog's death! Never once did Sunshine stop wagging her tail, raise her hackles, or try to defend the poor owner! I have to say that I cried through this, also. The dog didn't deserve tazing! The officers...how many of them ended up out there? Fifteen? Twenty? And all over a possible $5-10 maximum donation? But what truly broke my heart... Sunshine! My own service dog? She, also, was named Sunshine. And she almost got shot in the backseat of my car when I was stopped for a ridiculous reason that couldn't even justify a ticket. But my Sunshine put her head over the seat, trying to figure out what was happening. Her tail, also, was wagging. I feel so for this gentleman! And not to mention the dog!
I am a veteran. I watch a lot of these videos. The thought of him trying to end his own life because the loss of Sunshine, perhaps maybe one of the few true friends he has (not to mention the care she provides for him) literally made me get up and take a moment. How awful, how disheartening, how inhumane this whole situation is.
Heartbreaking. I hope he has a really caring therapist to help him. Incredible that he is a vet with PTSD and must have experienced some terrible things and yet this is what he calls the worst day of his life. He loves his dog.

Being a dog owner, this case immediately hit me hard. Sunshine was clearly a good and beautiful dog. I feel so bad for him losing his best friend. It brought tears to my eyes. The supreme court ruled on a daytona beach case in florida that it does violate ones speech to arrest or harass or ticket a person simply asking for help. Panhandling. It isnt illegal.
Alsi florida cannot supercede the supreme court. So if someone is arrested or ticketed for it? Thats a lawsuit. Cops know better. They just know a lot of people wont follow through. Besides they also know there are zero consequences for them if someone does. Qualified immunity needs to end and they need to be held personally responsible. The first million dollar judgement against a cop that he has to personally pay? Yeah other cops around the country will take note. Time to start learning what we can and cannot do. As a vet, it was extremely painful to watch this. I just can't imagine the complete lack of empathy and compassion from the Gastonia PD and the DA. They need a complete re-vamp. Let me get this straight: These two officers arrested a homeless veteran with mental illness for minuscule crimes and then tased his disability support dog?! I have watched many videos on ATA. I have never been so upset at an officer's action. Indeed, "ego" fueled this entire encounter. These officers have the wrong temperament for the job and do not protect and serve. Their actions were egregious across the board and merited the termination of their jobs. Rest in peace, Sunshine.
Not minuscule crimes. Their “local laws” were a violation of the 1st amendment. There was no crime here, and police have acted this way for years. When people allowed police to get away with violating the rights of criminals they opened the door to rights violations across the board. The next time you see someone with a criminal history getting treated this way for no reason it should concern you like it does now. You’d be surprised how many convictions are as false as this arrest.

This is not meant to be a racist statement, but living in a predominantly black area, it has been my experience that the black officers in my area have a much more aggressive and almost fear response when faced with my dogs. Now this is just anecdotal, but I’ve had many encounters due to our communities heavy push towards community policing and cops back on the beat walking the same streets as the citizens. Just my two cents.
9:16 you can hear the dog bite the officer and he only tasted her when she got behind the other officer and barked. The actions the officer took to get to that situation were unjustifiable but he was reasonable in tazing the dog in that situation.

Im a former Police Officer and a veteran who served overseas in Afghanistan. This video made me angry on so many levels. It’s baffling how an officer can behave in what I would consider a malicious manner with no sympathy or empathy for an individual.

I remember when my dog got hit by a car worst day of my life and ran for a mile and a half screaming watching her eyes flutter in and out of consciousness when got to the vet luckily they saved her life but she wasn’t the same I cried for hours days after now thank the Lord she is now back to normal and turns 2 next month
I've never cried so much during a TH-cam video. As a veteran I can't tell you how much our dogs mean to us. In a lot of cases they're the only ones some of us have left.
I ended up crying too. I'm not a vet. But I'm very empathetic and I know that no one on the outside can truly understand just how important your companion can be and how much they mean to you..I was already tearing up when they were threatening her.
He's responsible for his own dogs death, since he refused to comply with orders, then refused to simply give the ID to police, then resisted arrest, they yelled like a banshee. He learned that playing stupid games will win stupid prizes.

A convicted felon doesn’t deserve to be treated like this either if they have paid their debt to society, and I can’t believe I still see people just now realizing this. You should take a look at how many people spend years and decades in prison on false charges. Also take a look at who profits from the very large private prison system in this country, and how arresting agencies get paid to house offenders. The tax payer is ultimately responsible for all these actions.

I want to see the medical report for that "bite". Edit: officer says "it bit my foot"?! Which is protected by a boot. Did it latch on and pull? cause any injury? Didn't think so. From the time they started trying to put the suspect in handcuffs, until they tazed the dog, the dog didn't bark once. This officer is making up "facts" on the spot to justify the actions he wants to take to make his life easier: to wit, tazing the dog, and arresting the vagrant, so he can get this "interaction" over with.

As a veteran and dog lover who's watched hundreds of audit videos, this is the first time I've actually had to turn one off midway through. When he's crying out for his dog, i genuinely became overwhelmed with a flood of sadness, rage, disgust. I hope this encounter has a happy ending, but I can't keep watching to find out....

She was such a well behaved dog, she was just worried about her person, but never acted aggressively. . History has proven time and again, that those that willingly harm animals without provocation are near psycopaths.

I’ve met this gentleman and Sunshine 2 years ago while working as an over the road truck driver. They were the kindest and friendliest bunch I’ve ever met.
You watch a channel that highlights the worst police officers in the nation, then act like it's a good indicator for what the average police officer is like.

I've been disappointed every time I needed help. Even if you run out of gas or has a flat, they will never help. They'll run your tags and license but never any help.
The quality of officers today is just stomach churning. As a 24yr retired military policeman combat vet, watching the way officers conduct themselves as old west cowboy wannabe's is seriously heart breaking. How they can lose control of a simple situation and just feel the only way for them to react is to escalate as far as they please. I have 0 trust and 0 respect for law enforcement ever performing there job in accordance with the appropriate laws and standard operating procedures while taking safety into consideration. I won't shed any tears for officers who go down for whatever reason, chances are they caused it. Its just shameful the low amount of training and lack of quality hiring standards it takes for any bully with a chip on there shoulder to be put on the streets with an authority and weapons with the only mindset of harassing innocent people, causing severe mental anguish and trauma, terrorizing law abiding citizens by taking away there rights and dehumanizing them. Not just the victims, but also there family and friends or anyone who comes to there aid. Sorry to say any future involvement or encounter with law enforcement will be met with equal or greater force, depending on how physically threatened with bodily harm I feel and to the safety to others around me at that time. God help any officer who doesn't approach me with his hat in his hand and an ounce of respect and decency. If they want to go from 0 to dumbass in two minutes or less, I will be more than happy and willing to make on the spot corrections for there benefit. Very sad when it becomes the taxpayers duty to continue or enhance an officers training.
That is fucking animal abuse and if that lying cop isn’t charged with animal abuse I seriously give up on the justice system. Tasing a defenseless dog who was only doing what it was trained to do while it wasn’t being threatened, that cop should have severe consequences. I am beyond upset over this

I'm a 21 year active duty retiree. This is sickening to watch. These officers are clearly so disturbed that someone would question their authority and their bizarre interpretation of the facts that they AND THE CITY, are willing to lie, tase a working dog who was clearly not at all threatening, tail wagging and all, and disparage a veteran who has paid a price these two will likely never understand. Not one iota of benefit of doubt was given, even as he was producing ID. Shame on them.

Freedom is scary, messy, and uncomfortable sometimes. Lots of veterans out there have serious issues. Some don't seek help. Some do. I'm not saying he was 100 percent in the right. But certainly, the cops here were horrible. Their incompetence, arrogance, and lack of empathy are all to common in the LEO community. A good cop would have diffused this situation and he would have been on his way. They escalated it beyond reason.

This is exactly why I have bad trust issues with the police. You never know which are actually good and it's sad. That, and I have trauma from them due to personal reasons. Not to mention all the news stories on the courrupt cops already. I will never ever recover and will NEVER feel safe around them.
Tazing a service animal for performing the job that they were trained to do should be, at minimum, a felony. Hearing this brave soul call out for his companion and medical aide was absolutely heart-wrenching. Both of my parents are Army vets and they would be appalled watching this.
The dog showed no aggression towards either officer also, all it did was try to get next to it’s owner to comfort him, exactly what it’s trained to do and the officer because of his own preconceived notions on how dogs react in these type of situations, literally went after it and tased it for no reason… he’s a lowlife piece of garbage

This made me tear up. Brooks, the female cop, created the whole situation. She refused to accept that maybe her interpretation of events was wrong and didn't want to hear his side of things. Everything that happened, even indirectly like the death of the dog, was her fault. She is an example of the worst kind of cops: those who see the poor or homeless as less than people and thus not part of the community they serve. Her ego trip caused needless suffering and the death of an innocent animal.

As a vet with PTSD this video triggered me and I am shaking right now. If I were in that situation I would have reacted much worse than he did and would be lucky to be alive.
I'm not a vet but I do have ptsd from being sa'ed several times in my early teens and it was heartbreaking to see sunshine try to comfort her owner like she was trained then get tased because of it. That officer should've gotten charged and animal cruelty and kicked off the force.

Too bad these "officers" weren't held accountable for the dog's death! Never once did Sunshine stop wagging her tail, raise her hackles, or try to defend the poor owner! I have to say that I cried through this, also. The dog didn't deserve tazing! The officers...how many of them ended up out there? Fifteen? Twenty? And all over a possible $5-10 maximum donation? But what truly broke my heart... Sunshine! My own service dog? She, also, was named Sunshine. And she almost got shot in the backseat of my car when I was stopped for a ridiculous reason that couldn't even justify a ticket. But my Sunshine put her head over the seat, trying to figure out what was happening. Her tail, also, was wagging. I feel so for this gentleman! And not to mention the dog!

The thought of him trying to end his own life because the loss of Sunshine, perhaps maybe one of the few true friends he has (not to mention the care she provides for him) literally made me get up and take a moment. How awful, how disheartening, how inhumane this whole situation is.

Being a dog owner, this case immediately hit me hard. Sunshine was clearly a good and beautiful dog. I feel so bad for him losing his best friend. It brought tears to my eyes. These cops are tyrants and deserve to lose their jobs for this. It's very scary to think that this could happen to me and it'd be completely out of my control.

The supreme court ruled on a daytona beach case in florida that it does violate ones speech to arrest or harass or ticket a person simply asking for help. Panhandling. It isnt illegal.
Every time I receive a phone call requesting political donations, I report them to the police department for panhandling.
Alsi florida cannot supercede the supreme court. So if someone is arrested or ticketed for it? Thats a lawsuit. Cops know better. They just know a lot of people wont follow through. Besides they also know there are zero consequences for them if someone does. Qualified immunity needs to end and they need to be held personally responsible. The first million dollar judgement against a cop that he has to personally pay? Yeah other cops around the country will take note. Time to start learning what we can and cannot do. Let me get this straight: These two officers arrested a homeless veteran with mental illness for minuscule crimes and then tased his disability support dog?! I have watched many videos on ATA. I have never been so upset at an officer's action. Indeed, "ego" fueled this entire encounter. These officers have the wrong temperament for the job and do not protect and serve. Their actions were egregious across the board and merited the termination of their jobs. Rest in peace, Sunshine.
Not minuscule crimes. Their “local laws” were a violation of the 1st amendment. There was no crime here, and police have acted this way for years. When people allowed police to get away with violating the rights of criminals they opened the door to rights violations across the board. The next time you see someone with a criminal history getting treated this way for no reason it should concern you like it does now. You’d be surprised how many convictions are as false as this arrest.

That's insane, in the Netherlands it takes 2 years to be certified. No wonder so many f-up, 20 weeks is not even half a year.

This is not meant to be a racist statement, but living in a predominantly black area, it has been my experience that the black officers in my area have a much more aggressive and almost fear response when faced with my dogs. Now this is just anecdotal, but I’ve had many encounters due to our communities heavy push towards community policing and cops back on the beat walking the same streets as the citizens. Just my two cents.

This is the most disturbing/ down right maddening police interaction I've seen yet. Those people absolutely do NOT need to be anywhere around a position of power.
Yeah I usually avoid the ones involving animals, but this one caught me off guard. Just vile. Even IF Sunshine hadn’t died. I remember when my dog got hit by a car worst day of my life and ran for a mile and a half screaming watching her eyes flutter in and out of consciousness when got to the vet luckily they saved her life but she wasn’t the same I cried for hours days after now thank the Lord she is now back to normal and turns 2 next month
I've never cried so much during a TH-cam video. As a veteran I can't tell you how much our dogs mean to us. In a lot of cases they're the only ones some of us have left.

The sooner all of us recognize the police are a government entity and therefore the antithesis of freedom of the people, the better.
A convicted felon doesn’t deserve to be treated like this either if they have paid their debt to society, and I can’t believe I still see people just now realizing this. You should take a look at how many people spend years and decades in prison on false charges. Also take a look at who profits from the very large private prison system in this country, and how arresting agencies get paid to house offenders. The tax payer is ultimately responsible for all these actions.

I want to see the medical report for that "bite". Edit: officer says "it bit my foot"?! Which is protected by a boot. Did it latch on and pull? cause any injury? Didn't think so. From the time they started trying to put the suspect in handcuffs, until they tazed the dog, the dog didn't bark once. This officer is making up "facts" on the spot to justify the actions he wants to take to make his life easier: to wit, tazing the dog, and arresting the vagrant, so he can get this "interaction" over with.

As a veteran and dog lover who's watched hundreds of audit videos, this is the first time I've actually had to turn one off midway through. When he's crying out for his dog, i genuinely became overwhelmed with a flood of sadness, rage, disgust. I hope this encounter has a happy ending, but I can't keep watching to find out....

How they can lose control of a simple situation and just feel the only way for them to react is to escalate as far as they please. I have 0 trust and 0 respect for law enforcement ever performing there job in accordance with the appropriate laws and standard operating procedures while taking safety into consideration. I won't shed any tears for officers who go down for whatever reason, chances are they caused it. Its just shameful the low amount of training and lack of quality hiring standards it takes for any bully with a chip on there shoulder to be put on the streets with an authority and weapons with the only mindset of harassing innocent people, causing severe mental anguish and trauma, terrorizing law abiding citizens by taking away there rights and dehumanizing them. Not just the victims, but also there family and friends or anyone who comes to there aid. Sorry to say any future involvement or encounter with law enforcement will be met with equal or greater force, depending on how physically threatened with bodily harm I feel and to the safety to others around me at that time. I've seen videos of cops threatening to call CPS to come take someone's child.
That is fucking animal abuse and if that lying cop isn’t charged with animal abuse I seriously give up on the justice system. Tasing a defenseless dog who was only doing what it was trained to do while it wasn’t being threatened, that cop should have severe consequences. I am beyond upset over this

Well you are brainwashed and traumatized in training in order to be able to cope with the hell of war but then after few years you are left alone to deal with your PTSD and all substance dependence :-[ failed model idk why they won't keep people bit longer in service plus put them in some training camp when they are back in the country
As a vet myself this country does not deserve your service. That ship sailed a long time ago.
They are treated pretty good while in. That is while people still enlist.

I'm a 21 year active duty retiree. This is sickening to watch. These officers are clearly so disturbed that someone would question their authority and their bizarre interpretation of the facts that they AND THE CITY, are willing to lie, tase a working dog who was clearly not at all threatening, tail wagging and all, and disparage a veteran who has paid a price these two will likely never understand. Not one iota of benefit of doubt was given, even as he was producing ID. Shame on them.

He broke the law, and refused to identify himself after being compelled for ID. Don't enable this bad behavior among your fellow vets.

@@2KCamaroZ28SS He DIDN'T REFUSE to ID. He resisted an unconstitutional local ordinance and was standing up for the Constitutional rights he served to defend. Freedom is scary, messy, and uncomfortable sometimes. Lots of veterans out there have serious issues. Some don't seek help. Some do. I'm not saying he was 100 percent in the right. But certainly, the cops here were horrible. Their incompetence, arrogance, and lack of empathy are all to common in the LEO community. A good cop would have diffused this situation and he would have been on his way. They escalated it beyond reason.
When an entity as a whole uses “it’s everyone else not us”. Yea. It’s them. Yet another reason more and more people are taking up arms against this type of tyranny. And rightfully so. This is absolutely disgusting.
The fact that there was NO REMORSE from these thugs says it all. Their contempt for this poor man was palpable through the video. Watching from NZ, truly heartbroken as to humanity has lost direction
Agreed, and I must have missed the part where they "SERIOUSLY regret it" in any way or at any point. Based on their behavior and even comments directly from the officers, they think they did nothing wrong.
Heartbreaking what happened to our Veteran and Sunshine! I pray that Justice will finally be served on those two despicable, lowlife POS officers.
Hope the cops there dont have any kids. Wondering how they would react when they are in the same situation like the Veteran, or worse how they treat their kids
for ppl that say u cant compare human with animals - if u alone and have this animal for over 10 years u surely have a rly strong bonding mentally & treat it as your child. But thats most ppl wont understand anyway.

This is exactly why I have bad trust issues with the police. You never know which are actually good and it's sad.
That, and I have trauma from them due to personal reasons.
Not to mention all the news stories on the courrupt cops already.
I will never ever recover and will NEVER feel safe around them.
Needs to be stricter punishment for officers who fail at their job...

Tazing a service animal for performing the job that they were trained to do should be, at minimum, a felony. Hearing this brave soul call out for his companion and medical aide was absolutely heart-wrenching. Both of my parents are Army vets and they would be appalled watching this.
The dog showed no aggression towards either officer also, all it did was try to get next to it’s owner to comfort him, exactly what it’s trained to do and the officer because of his own preconceived notions on how dogs react in these type of situations, literally went after it and tased it for no reason… he’s a lowlife piece of garbage
