Yes all F9x series S63, later N63, B58, S58 all have plasma arc sprayed cylinder coatings. We are able to refurbish this coating locally, incl. convert Alusil blocks to plasma coated ones.
To me, if I was going to do an engine like this from the ground up, I would sleeve the block fully, WPC treat the main and rod bearings, pistons and upgrade the valve guides and seals ( if there are better materials available ). The oil will be the biggest change, Lubrication Engineers synthetic oil is phenominal.
Yes, definitely more reliable. I've been through all the variants and the later models definitely have less issues. I've been in N63s since a 2011 F10 550i and have had various ones over the years.
@ Sorry, what I meant to say is that the newest N63TU3 is a lot more reliable than the early models from the F10s. I've had 2 S63 F90 M5s and 5 different N63TUs and I never had any issues with the newer V8s. They are definiltely more reliable than the early ones.
Hi, great video, just a curious question, I have a 2016 x5M with 980000km on it and #2 cylinder is burning a lot of oil. Plus is wet and heavy smoke from passenger side exhaust. Engine runs rich and doesn't throw any oxygen sensor codes. Always get the powertrain power loss code #2 cylinder misfire and when I get in there with the scanner it's always history, very rarely active. The power loss is not consistent. It could run for a while without any issues and then it'll keep getting the power loss message again and again. The coils and plugs have been changed, and gapped properly. Thought that's what it was but only wishful thinking I guess. CCV lines are new. Haven't takes the turbo piping off to see if turbo seal is gone but then again oil burning only starts after around 10 mins of running. Then it's quite a bit. Added octane booster to it and ran good for a bit, so thought need to use 93 or higher octane fuel, but that wasn't it either. The previous owner had it tuned and just thinking the tuner maybe missed some fueling parameters. He said it started running like that after the tune. Dealer syas engine no good that's why powertrain malfunction keeps popping up. If it was engine, that powertrain loss would be consistent, I think anyways. It's just whenever it feels like it. Coils tested out of the engine, tested good.#2 spark plus was quite dirty due to oil being burned in the cylinder. Any ideas to point me in the right direction for more diagnostics? Thanks in advance
@@alwaysinmotion1 That is 609,000 miles! That is incredible. You have to post some pics as you surely have the highest mileage X5. There is a scratch on my F90 M5 engine block, which material is best for cylinder sleeve? which material did you used on that N63 engine? are they reliable ? Thank you.
Hello, were all M5F90 engines with Alusil cylinder walls before 2020? Is it easy for this type of cylinder wall to have problems if the mileage is too long?
Great video my man, so i have a specific N63 question for you.. So i'm in the process of doing my first N63 Complete rebuild. The block is a N63 from a 2014 BMW X6 50i drive. I believe the actual motor is N63B44A.. So i bought a set of brand new rings. Is this block alu seal?? can it be honed without sleeving? Or should i just reinstall the rings that back to their respective cylinders?? This was a running motor and so far all parts have measured to spec.. Thank you for your time
If cylinder bore has no excess ovality and surface has no scratches it can be refreshed by exposing alusil crystals and works as new. Rings do nto need to be replaced if they have enough spring in them and ring gap is ok.
Thanks man for getting to back to me so quickly. So i learned since that my block is definitely alusil. I have also decided to do the self hone procedure with felt and paste to get ready and re ring the block.. i'm going to measure the bores today, but i have noticed that one of the pistons has two finger nail deep scratches on the skirt so there was some sort of motor issue before and was rebuilt before my acquiring this engine.. Because of this i think it's a good idea to just re ring with new set and proper clearances since im putting brand new parts , bearings, etc... I will let you know how everything goes after.. @@KeselMotorsport
Hey bud so here's a quick update.. So upon deeper inspection of the block during measuring i found cylinder num 4 with a decent size gouge and another finger size scratch as well. This corresponds to the piston because there are 2 fingernail deep scratches on the skirt and a gouge at the bottom. So i'm going to use the original block that doesn't seem to have any damage in bores. However this block did have 2 spun bearings, the rods 4 and 8.. I figure i clean everything extremely well and swap the parts.. On to my second issue i used a wire wheel on the area around the oil rings to remove carbon, but i scrubbed the sides and skirts with purple power and grey 1000 grit scotchbrite.. I checked with calipers and they still are same measurements as pistons i didn't clean from other motor.. Will these be ok to use or did i mess up royally?@@KeselMotorsport
Ive been getting interested in Alpina B7. I have read they install after market forged pistons. Do you know if alpina has any other internal engine differences from standard n63?
I’ve been trying to find any info on crankshafts. Might be off topic. Couldn’t find a way to message you directly. Are the crankshaft flywheel bolt holes the same for all 4.4l v8s? Like an m62 flywheel same holes as say N63/S63??
You can contact us at janis@keselmotorsport.com. We can help and rescue Your engine. Im not sure of M62, all E7x+ n63 and s63 basically use the same crank.
Yes I have the extra s63 manifold to swap in but realized the oil to water cooler may interfere with install. I use R compound tire on track with coilovers in my 850 and no oil pressure loss. Is there less difference btwn n63btu44 and S63tu4 than the n63tu2 in this video?
Quite interesting content 👍 , have wondered previously about beemer engines sharing similar components. Was going down the s63 route for our car but due to reliability issues we went S58 instead. Always handy to know about the hard coating , makes a rebore slightly more viable and a possible re coating. Maybe even a DLC coating 🤔
What is interesting that later S63 also moved to 6 bolt instead of 8 (dont forget the angled bolts). While most plasma coated blocks come with 6 bolt design, earlier ones in F95 came with 8 bolts AND plasma coating.
Would love to see a comparison engine for engine btwn s63 f90
Vs n63tu3 the in the m850s
same
It's more of the same. All the blocks are based off the same casting.
Correct
I would like to see the same video but for the cylinder heads
Awesome video ! It's always good to see BMW engineering to that level specially on the S63 - Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Hi whats the differences of n63t3 and s63t4 i read both uses the same block right ?

Nope. All the technical updates suffer from problems.

No, as you can see in video there is some fundamental differences in machining.

Does the oil heat exchanger block the use of s63 cross bank manifolds?
N63 use classic log style manifold, one bank one merge. No cross bank manifold on N63, hence different exhaust note.
