Race car racer and renowned mechanical engineer Soichiro Honda started his company by building motorised bicycles using surplus wartime engines.
Honda's Atype bicycle engine was designed and produced in 1947 thanks to the motorised bike's popularity. With the help of a private investor, it started manufacturing motorcycles in 1949 after being formed in 1948 as the Honda Motor Company.
Honda swiftly capitalised on that trend by developing a ground-breaking engine that doubled the four-stroke engine's power.
The company saw a rise in sales and greater funding in the 1950s as a result of this engine breakthrough. Honda moved its headquarters to Tokyo and established manufacturing and offices around Japan. Honda has won every major motorbike award in the world by the conclusion of the decade.
In 1953, the small-engine Honda C-100 motorbike was released, and by 1959, it was the world's best-selling motorcycle. The American Honda Motor business, a US subsidiary established by the business in 1959, produced cars in the US in 1982 and bikes in 1979.
