“Engineering: the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building and use of engines, machines and structures.” So says the Webster definition. Our newest Free Documentary family member Free Documentary - Engineering is all about engineering - and bringing our community the best documentaries on engineering.
You know who NEVER gets the credit they deserve? The engineers who design all the MACHINES that manufacture EVERYTHING!!!
for real. I've always wonder how do you make the tools that make something that doesnt exist yet??!!
These are so unappreciated We owe so much gratitude to the people that build these monsters to move earth and give us the life that we have here in America
From my perspective as an old time CAT manufacturing engineer, I'm taken back to all of the amazing solutions we came up with to make these massive machines! Loved it!
And now the good stuff is probably made better & cheaper outside the USA.
Right you are, grasshopper
What was the first mining truck that was totally redesined with a new frame, one 12 cylinder engine from 2 engines? I can't remember the model number. I worked on the AC lines from the compressor to the cab. I saw CAD models being stress tested. Minor changes being made and tested again.
@@dans_Learning_Curve not sure. I designed manufacturing systems for cylinders at Joliet.
Some of our family is working for JohnDeere. What has gone wrong with that company? Offshore companies are stealing their lunch.
The fact that man has created a container that will maintain its structural integrity and transport another metal that is so hot that it's in liquid form. I'm sure this factory is a great place to work in Winter but not in Summer...
It’s climate control in the plant. They did that 15 + years ago because of rust issues. I’ve been there 13 years
I've been fascinated by the 797 for a number of years. This was a great look behind the scenes.
whatever these guys get paid they deserve more
Big respect for the workers 🫡 💪
I wasn't expecting the hammering part. Great ingenuity all round to come up with something that huge and easy to operate.
Every part of these behemoths are so well engineered.
I've worked in the mining industry for well over ten years. I've driven Komatsu 930s, Volvos, Terex's, Liebherrs...you name it. None of them can compare to the Cat 793s or Cat 795. They are, simply put, best in all. Oh, except the fact that the Volvo has a better stereo.
Lmao I'd take the Volvo in that case I'm a music nut. What a fun job you have 😁
@@chloeleedow7250 I'm a music nut myself, so I buy a set of really good noise cancelling headphones and drive off into the sunset with a Cat 795.
But tbh, nowdays I rarely drive the trucks, since I'm mostly loading them using Cat's, LeTourneaus adn Komatsus. And it's pretty much the same with wheelloaders and hydraulic shovels, the Cat's are best.
Volvo doesn’t have trucks like these big Cats, do they?
Slings don’t collapse
@@AdriaanVerburg No, not this big. The Volvos we had on site were Volvo R100s. 100-ton trucks.
Finally some real engineering.
I watched this whole video with my jaw dropped😮cool stuff!
So cool to see all this come together! The Caterpillar Company teams seem very proud of their work, as they should be :)
Obviously naive about the company
Greetings: 35:05- The seat's height R NOT "hydraulic" controlled. They R pneumatically controlled.
I came here to post this comment 😂
Me too😅
Everyone please relax, the content police have just arrived…….👮♂️👮♂️👮♂️👮♂️👮♂️
@@cerny4444 And the biggest fun is, this channel simply reposts stuff from other channels or TV stations - not producing it themself.
The amazing thing about the engineering of the 797 is that it is such an easy to operate monster.
I found it to be far more preferable than the 930 Komatsu in terms of ease of controlling the beast. It’s got a mechanical drivetrain compared to the diesel electric setup and the response is far better and simpler to control.
For a 400 tonne truck that hauls another 400 tonne payload it handles very well.
ur crappy shilling doesn't fool anyone
The shift from a Le Mans winning supercar to this massive truck is crazy
Refreshing to see a place thats clean, there's order, happy people, some insane engineering and something actually gets built. ...positive result. It gave me 50 minutes +- of escape from this world . Thank you 👍.
That's what she said! @ 0:20
This documentarty is amazing! I thought I would watch the first few minutes and scrub through the rest, but ended up watching all of it without skipping a single second.
Except the unnecessary music. This is a low quality TV show from the 2000th I guess.
Me too. Extremely well made.
Almost unbelievable that the foundry is in a Western country. Like stepping back in time.
No robots, no safety. Crazy.
Great documentary on the amazing workmanship that these folks do... I worked in airspace and military defense projects for many years some time ago. Alright then became a mechanical engineer and precision inspector in question assurance. Ok well now a retired old US Navy Veteran during the Vietnam War. Take care folks and my God be with you...
🦾✌️💔🙏🇺🇸🎶
Ummm. In Quality Assurance rather 🤣
I remember seeing the beds made in Decatur back in the day. Also D building is where my working time end for the rest of my life. And cat will just throw you away and pay you nothing for your trouble
I just sat here and watched the entire video. Very professional, this could be on TV.
I worked 30 years for Cat Dealers in Alaska, California and Idaho. Simply the best there is. Nothing against the Competition, just what I saw in my career.
Absolutely amazing.
20:45 you say South Carolina...but map shows Indiana lmao..otherwise great Doc , watched the whole thing liked and sub
Look up how the locals pronounce Amite where the frames are cast, he butchered it 🤣🤣🤣
@@dieselmunkey oh dear lord
And they said 96 ford explorers will fit in the Dump bed 😂😂😂😂
I caught that one to... evidently someone doesn't know the states 😂.
@@garyr7027 Post-production....
I bought 10 shares of this company last year and its worth every penny. Nice growing dividend too!
Nice, comprehensive video, considering it was only 50 minutes and 37 seconds long. Very interesting, educational, and fascinating. I can understand why the tire final molding wasn't shown. Michelin probably has quite a lot of patents on the processes. I am a bit surprised with what was shown, with the steel belts, and all. Thank you.
At 20:44 the narrator mentions the tires being manufactured in South Carolina, but the graphic shown is Lafayette, Indiana with a star.
This is such a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how Caterpillar builds those incredible machines! 🏗 The level of precision, engineering, and sheer scale of the production process is mind-blowing. 😮 It's amazing to see how these behemoths come together from start to finish. The attention to detail and the technology involved are truly impressive. 👏 Can't wait to see more insights into the world of engineering and manufacturing! 🚜💥
That was fantastic. All involved in both production of this beast, and this documentary, should be proud of themselves. Greetings from Prague, CZ
We need more manufacturing in America
When this documentary was filmed in 2007, americas share of global manufacturing was around 20%, today it’s 15%. China is more than double of that at 35%. Times are changing
Its on its way 2025!
We will be rollin’ soon. If President Trump is who we think he is we will be steam rolling the world very shortly. If not we are in deep trouble.
@@ronmurphy00 You can wish in one hand and sh💩t in the other....
Magnetic paint, that's pretty smart
What an amazing wagon. Looks like they can even produce maybe 4pcs in a year! GREAT
No wonder the dump beds fall apart. They're made in Canada!
4:30 did i just see Snoop Dogg? 😮
probably something he'ed do ngl
😅😅😅😂😂😂
Inspiration for drop it like it's hot 🤔
I bet CEE Australia could build on in his shop all by himself piece by piece. Lol
There once was a beast, 3524,
Whose power would truly allure.
With engines so grand, built tough to withstand,
It conquered the job, that's for sure!
They need to add a section at the top that is circular so the wall cannot be scaled with a hook
Absolutely Beautiful. 😊😊❤️❤️❤️
See the work people did before they get laid off
The thing that keeps making me giggle is the lack of PPE and all the workers in tank tops and shorts 😂
Woman explains how the 10 spindle works: "the 10 spindle is real cool, you push a button and, it's easy" 😂
I was a powder coater for Sherwin Williams in the Athens Georgia CAT plant. I think the biggest thing we powder coated was a D5 dozer frame, I bet it would be fun to paint one these monster frames.
Someone that knows the proper terminology LOL
@@MrBpritch100 did they not say electrostatic?
@@maxwebster7572 Yes, paint can be applied electrostatically. Doesn't powder coating require baking in an oven?
@@FourDollaRacing Powder doesn't have to bake in an oven. Portable infra reds will work. I have sprayed both conventional and powders electrostatically.
The 797B isn't enough for my needs. I'm going to need something bigger.
I've worked in the one of the competitor from Japan. This video makes me miss about working in heavy equipment manufacturing company. The processes are really similar 😅
Used to weld in one of the facilities that built the massive shovels and buckets that filled the trucks. Definitely an experience. Was neat knowing your work was in mines all over the world. Almost every weld getting at least an M.T test on the root pass. Most also got the full U.T test after final welding.
We’re inspired by engineering marvels like the Caterpillar 797B. Heavy machinery, such as this mining giant, exemplifies innovation and precision-values we uphold in connecting global buyers and sellers in the auto and machinery sectors.
Very cool documentary. Thank you for your work and those that were able to discuss what was going on on screen.
Great video...but I find it telling that an all American, except one facility in Canada, manufacturing company doesn't use any of the weights and measures that the 350 million people who live and work here use. Hectares? Ya, not...but great video! Very impressive. Please do more caterpillar models! Thanks
Bubbles and Tom Green working with each other in the Alberta tire shop 😂😂😂 40:50 42:06 42:44 43:06
😂 You saw that too! 😂
😂 You saw that too! 😂
Human beings are at the very top of the chain of life. Humans are capable of doing things that are practically impossible sometimes. As humans, we have one advantage over all living beings in this world, which is perfect intellect. Perfect means that we are able to choose what is good/bad for us. We are perfect in every way. But unfortunately we are annihilated by our own perfection. This means we are no different from animals if we do not use our intellect to the best of our ability...
Thanks for a good documentary.✌️
Parabéns belo trabalho
*Good video, could've been a great video with less or no music at all!*
On the heap of history...
Some freedom dimensions would be nice
Commercials every 45 seconds. Yay.
Ive been in the East Peoria and Mapleton foundries many times doing IT work and its always amazing to see.
Big dog.. makes in USA !.
Thanks you for the video.
20:44 that's not South Carolina, that's Indiana.
Oh my god. This is so awesome to see you guys used Metric in the Documentary! I was prepared to not understand anything, but I'm really glad about that! Thanks!
In years past, the salty hand sweat from bare-hands handling of the rubber, was known to cause later long-life defects. Some of the tire processing shows gloves being used. Which process is relevant to long life?
and just think none of this would of been possible if the brits hadn't invented tracked vehicles
Dude was checking everything but the welds
and still there are operators that break them 😂😂😂😂
"This content is amazing! 12:45 Imagine what you could create in just a week!"
I want this truck for regular daily drive, just to take my kids to the school.
just an average american
You mean take the school to your kids lol
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very nice presentation. What I wonder: How does it come that 4-cycle engine sizes vary so much versus power? We have F1 cars at 600HP (without electric turbo) and are about the size of a full tower pc. Train diesel engines are about the size of a car and have 5000HP. Yet these things are the size of a school bus and have 3500HP. I dont get that..
Now THAT is a monster truck!😮😮
Drove an old clapped out 769C for about 4 months when I worked in the quarry..then we got a newer Komatsu. Night and day difference..
What is the biggest dump truck in the world and what is its capacity? With an enormous 496-tonne payload capacity, the Belaz 75710 is the world's largest dump truck.
Some of the best engineering, some.
Maaaaan this big beast brings back the kid in me.
These are literally sci fi terraforming machines
20:51 he just said South Carolina, and then he showed Lafayette Indiana
I just hope that melting crew is very well paid...
Refueled…

I REALLY wanted to see the machined weld joints fitted up!!😡😁👍🏽🇺🇸
all the added unnecessary drama from these old shows is hilarious
THE ALBERTA OOOOIIIILLLLL SANDS oOOoooOOoooOOooo
Respect for the people who are working on fire 🔥💪
It's so bizarre that just a single man can get so rich to own a huge mining company, and many of these trucks, gobbling mountains of money every day while on the contrary most of the worlds population live poor lives, can't even afford a house or car.
Loved this video! Thanks.
So the big CAT has two V-12 engines mated together but you are showing the engine build of a V16 🧐
yes mega machine amazing
Excellent documentary. More information on the transmission would have been interesting.
I drive one of these trucks for work and they’re awesome.
Less than 2 min. in and the comparison to Boeing 747 begins...Lol
air ride seat is not hydraulically raised it is pneumatic
So cool to see all this come together! wowow
Older video or not I found it very impressive and very much appreciated this video
Only 3.4 million bucks!?... This has gotta be old! They're around 5 mil. present day and considering the assembly/mechanical labor involved, all that welding, the massive amount of raw materials, along with the tooling, machines and time required to create so many massive, yet precision parts, that seems like an incredible deal!
a 3 or 4 hour weld? Wow
The fake drama gets to be a pain quickly. Everything is a challenge.

Save the metrics for another country!
Absolutely brilliant and very informative and educational. More please.
