“Engineering: the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building and use of engines, machines and structures.” So says the Webster definition. Our newest Free Documentary family member Free Documentary - Engineering is all about engineering - and bringing our community the best documentaries on engineering.
From my perspective as an old time CAT manufacturing engineer, I'm taken back to all of the amazing solutions we came up with to make these massive machines! Loved it!
And now the good stuff is probably made better & cheaper outside the USA.
Right you are, grasshopper
What was the first mining truck that was totally redesined with a new frame, one 12 cylinder engine from 2 engines? I can't remember the model number. I worked on the AC lines from the compressor to the cab. I saw CAD models being stress tested. Minor changes being made and tested again.
@@dans_Learning_Curve not sure. I designed manufacturing systems for cylinders at Joliet.
Some of our family is working for JohnDeere. What has gone wrong with that company? Offshore companies are stealing their lunch.
The amazing thing about the engineering of the 797 is that it is such an easy to operate monster.
I found it to be far more preferable than the 930 Komatsu in terms of ease of controlling the beast. It’s got a mechanical drivetrain compared to the diesel electric setup and the response is far better and simpler to control.
For a 400 tonne truck that hauls another 400 tonne payload it handles very well.
I've worked in the mining industry for well over ten years. I've driven Komatsu 930s, Volvos, Terex's, Liebherrs...you name it. None of them can compare to the Cat 793s or Cat 795. They are, simply put, best in all. Oh, except the fact that the Volvo has a better stereo.
Lmao I'd take the Volvo in that case I'm a music nut. What a fun job you have 😁
@@chloeleedow7250 I'm a music nut myself, so I buy a set of really good noise cancelling headphones and drive off into the sunset with a Cat 795.
But tbh, nowdays I rarely drive the trucks, since I'm mostly loading them using Cat's, LeTourneaus adn Komatsus. And it's pretty much the same with wheelloaders and hydraulic shovels, the Cat's are best.
Volvo doesn’t have trucks like these big Cats, do they?
Slings don’t collapse
@@AdriaanVerburg No, not this big. The Volvos we had on site were Volvo R100s. 100-ton trucks.
The fact that man has created a container that will maintain its structural integrity and transport another metal that is so hot that it's in liquid form. I'm sure this factory is a great place to work in Winter but not in Summer...
It’s climate control in the plant. They did that 15 + years ago because of rust issues. I’ve been there 13 years
What an amazing wagon. Looks like they can even produce maybe 4pcs in a year! GREAT
I've been fascinated by the 797 for a number of years. This was a great look behind the scenes.
Greetings: 35:05- The seat's height R NOT "hydraulic" controlled. They R pneumatically controlled.
I came here to post this comment 😂
Absolutely Beautiful. 😊😊❤️❤️❤️
So cool to see all this come together! The Caterpillar Company teams seem very proud of their work, as they should be :)
Obviously naive about the company
We’re inspired by engineering marvels like the Caterpillar 797B. Heavy machinery, such as this mining giant, exemplifies innovation and precision-values we uphold in connecting global buyers and sellers in the auto and machinery sectors.
This documentarty is amazing! I thought I would watch the first few minutes and scrub through the rest, but ended up watching all of it without skipping a single second.
Except the unnecessary music. This is a low quality TV show from the 2000th I guess.
I wasn't expecting the hammering part. Great ingenuity all round to come up with something that huge and easy to operate.
4:30 did i just see Snoop Dogg? 😮
probably something he'ed do ngl
😅😅😅😂😂😂
Inspiration for drop it like it's hot 🤔
This is such a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how Caterpillar builds those incredible machines! 🏗 The level of precision, engineering, and sheer scale of the production process is mind-blowing. 😮 It's amazing to see how these behemoths come together from start to finish. The attention to detail and the technology involved are truly impressive. 👏 Can't wait to see more insights into the world of engineering and manufacturing! 🚜💥
I was a powder coater for Sherwin Williams in the Athens Georgia CAT plant. I think the biggest thing we powder coated was a D5 dozer frame, I bet it would be fun to paint one these monster frames.
Someone that knows the proper terminology LOL
@@MrBpritch100 did they not say electrostatic?
Refreshing to see a place thats clean, there's order, happy people, some insane engineering and something actually gets built. ...positive result. It gave me 50 minutes +- of escape from this world . Thank you 👍.
Big respect for the workers 🫡 💪
Every part of these behemoths are so well engineered.
We need more manufacturing in America
When this documentary was filmed in 2007, americas share of global manufacturing was around 20%, today it’s 15%. China is more than double of that at 35%. Times are changing
Its on its way 2025!
We will be rollin’ soon. If President Trump is who we think he is we will be steam rolling the world very shortly. If not we are in deep trouble.
I want this truck for regular daily drive, just to take my kids to the school.
just an average american
Finally some real engineering.
20:45 you say South Carolina...but map shows Indiana lmao..otherwise great Doc , watched the whole thing liked and sub
Look up how the locals pronounce Amite where the frames are cast, he butchered it 🤣🤣🤣
@@dieselmunkey oh dear lord
And they said 96 ford explorers will fit in the Dump bed 😂😂😂😂
I caught that one to... evidently someone doesn't know the states 😂.
Absolutely amazing.
It’s nice to see all the laborers.. because I’m sure if Cat wanted to it could go all robotic
This is more than just a video; it’s a work of art 5:35
Factories can create more jobs!!👍👍👍
Oh my god. This is so awesome to see you guys used Metric in the Documentary! I was prepared to not understand anything, but I'm really glad about that! Thanks!
At 20:44 the narrator mentions the tires being manufactured in South Carolina, but the graphic shown is Lafayette, Indiana with a star.
Air pressure hydraulically control seat hight??? Pneumatically controlled no? DUH😂
Only 3.4 million bucks!?... This has gotta be old! They're around 5 mil. present day and considering the assembly/mechanical labor involved, all that welding, the massive amount of raw materials, along with the tooling, machines and time required to create so many massive, yet precision parts, that seems like an incredible deal!
Its crazy how much they have to put into digging, transport, processing to extract oil from the dirt. I hope we dont run out of oil in my life time.
I've driven 797s in the past. Was actually on a 777 when 9/11 happened. I remember it like it was yesterday.
In years past, the salty hand sweat from bare-hands handling of the rubber, was known to cause later long-life defects. Some of the tire processing shows gloves being used. Which process is relevant to long life?
Bubbles and Tom Green working with each other in the Alberta tire shop 😂😂😂 40:50 42:06 42:44 43:06
Excellent documentary. More information on the transmission would have been interesting.
Refueled…
💚
The Florist…🌹
I bet CEE Australia could build on in his shop all by himself piece by piece. Lol
Thanks for all them
Impressive ! Cat Diesel Power ! Made in the U.S.A. But How Were the Pyramids Built ?
Your video has broadened my understanding. Thank you for these materials.
Man I love this channel. Keep up the good work you guys! Good to see a digger unfkd so beautifully
17…
😉
The Florist…🌹
On the heap of history...
I was just there in Alberta visiting Herc at the Albion location. It’s crazy to see how large those things are. Small trucks need tall flags just so the drivers see them.
And the electric shovels make the haul trucks look small
The wheel tool must have a SPRING mounting!!!!
Qe had it in the 90 's
What is the biggest dump truck in the world and what is its capacity? With an enormous 496-tonne payload capacity, the Belaz 75710 is the world's largest dump truck.
"This content is amazing! 12:45 Imagine what you could create in just a week!"
Ah, now THIS is the essence of MURICA. Supersize EVERYTHING.
Super cool 😎
Loved this video! Thanks.
Respect for the people who are working on fire 🔥💪
797 dumpbox, builded in cat Mexico, assembled in canada 😉
امید که در همه امور پیشرفتهای چشم گیری داشته باشید ب امید موفقیت برای شما 🌹🌹💙🙏
air ride seat is not hydraulically raised it is pneumatic
Maybe we should talk about the huge problem of the Alberta Oil Sands.
You can teach a McDonald's drive trough person to run a cnc machine, that's how simple it is.
20:45 South Carolina???? I could have sworn it was farther south.
I drive one of these trucks for work and they’re awesome.
So cool to see all this come together! wowow
Older video or not I found it very impressive and very much appreciated this video
I`m sure these crankshafts are the same we make at work in the UK.
I watched this show on History Channel around 2005
really great video and very useful
i agree their out of date i’d like to see what innovations and changes they have made.
Absolutely brilliant and very informative and educational. More please.
I drive by the Cat factory in Decatur several times a day.
See the work people did before they get laid off
34:57. The narrator is not paying attention to what he is saying. First of all, it's a pneumatic system that is being used to adjust the height of the seat not hydraulic!
Did anyone pay attention in making this film? They show us that the truck's engine is actually two engines - two 3512's (V12 engines). Then they show us and engine build facility and they are building a different engine - the 3516 (V16).
Some of the best engineering, some.
I love seeing how Caterpillar gives jobs to different factories in different places.
Yeah, slave labor. The hold the farmers hostage.
Why is the hoist operator not wearing a hard hat along with everyone else. I know it won't make a difference when your crushed by it, but I bet OSHA will be making a visit soon after this video.
video looks to be about 10+ years out of date
its because it was on discovery channel 10years or 15years ago
Boohooohooo
In the credits it says 2007
Viewer looks to be ungrateful for the free documentary
That’s what she said!!
Thanks for very informative video ❤
I Have A Question For CAT .??? Why Does Your CAT emblem Not Have A Massive Nod , To All those Work horses that Proved your concept A Propagating Success ? ? ?. ???
I know only Cartepillar shout down the factory in London Ontario Canada!
How good is Whiteman! All these engineering principles and manufacturing methods our ancestors came up with and perfected, Man we are good!
Too sad they moved from Oakland,Calif. They employed many living here.A good job back then.
when they throw bags of aluminium etc into the ladle how can they be sure it all blends together?
wouldn't it be better to throw the bags in first?
Awesome thank you
Men hard at work. Well done boys.
Maaaaan this big beast brings back the kid in me.
good knowledge
To think that all of that was necessary... Just for me to type this with my Keyboard...
20:44 that's not South Carolina, that's Indiana.
I wait anxiously for the comparisons:
"Big enough to hold 97 Ford Explorers"
"Weighs as much as 4 Olympic Swimming pools"
"Has as much horsepower as 27,000 Vespa Scooters"
"Molten Metal hotter than 40 Hells"
"Each Tire has more rubber than every car registered in Lewisburg, Maine"
and just think none of this would of been possible if the brits hadn't invented tracked vehicles
That's just badass
This is obviously an older video. Maybe 2005 or so, just guessing! Lol
What’s your point?
I just hope that melting crew is very well paid...
WOW So Amazing
I wonder where all the solar panels and windmills are located that power the steel furnaces...
❤
yes mega machine amazing
Hell yeah factory
It amazes me how the narrator of these videos assumes they're taking to children about how s motor runs.
Im surprised they arent stick welding that frame together. Better heat and penetration
All proper welds are stronger than the material.
CAT....perfect
I remember when no one heard people complain, that was America now that’s all we hear (😂😂😂)
