Many studies show waiting until age 8 for formal instruction is best. Let kids play. My oldest didn't start formal instruction until 8 and he's 11 now and way ahead of his peers . My other three will wait until age 8 too. It's worth it. Don't let society make you feel "behind" or neglectful because you're not doing what everyone else is. You won't regret doing what's best for your kid. Every kid is different as well. Some are ready sooner, some later. Don't compare your kids, even to your own kids!
I have this experience too. Very cool. I did not let societal norms dictate when they started formal school and they excel in academics now…though at 10 & 8 I still mostly have a play & nature curriculum for them.
Agreed. Unfortunately some of us don’t have a choice. My state requires Kindergarten and compulsory age is 6. Now I can get away with play based learned. But some states require specific subjects.
Question when u delay formal academics…. What level curriculums do you start with? Like my son is 5.5 and i held of starting kindergarten but i’m looking at getting his material setup for next year and hes learned most of what is in the curriculums. So i dont know do i look at first grade level curriculum? But i dont want him to be aggressively pushed! Lol but i also dont want him to be bored…
@@synthiaamaartir9553 that’s not entirely true. I’ve homeschooled and been homeschooled in multiple states. Yes you can unschool in all 50 to an extent, but some states DO require you cover certain subjects, and you do have to start education of some kind at certain ages. And there’s more to it than just a once a month email for attendance. My current state requires 185 days of attendance, and you have to fill out a bunch of information with the district as an independent homeschooler or join an umbrella school send attendance reports to them. Testing is required unless you join an umbrella school. Unschooling is easy in my state if you join an umbrella. But you can’t delay starting something until age 8 unfortunately. Other states require require subjects starting in Kindergarten (of all things!) so it’s not quite as simple as that.
I completely hear you, I work full time for a corporation, I am super pregnant, and have a 2 young children I'm home schooling. I am a 100% in a season where its just best to follow a curriculum to make sure I'm touching on everything. My youngest is using the preschool from good in the beautiful, and LOVES it! She even asks to do it often! Hope all goes well this year for you and your family! I love your approach to listening and watching your children to see if they are ready for certain school areas, we had done that with my oldest and he LOVES school and learning because we are showing him how great learning at his pace.
I'm coming into the preschool years for the first time, and would really love a video where you explain more about those other skills you were talking about, the ones that often don't get focused on enough. I feel like I know to do letters and numbers and shapes and colors and things like that, plus things like cutting and gluing skills, etc, but it sounds like there are other things that I could incorporate as well.
I think maybe she meant more for kindergarten? TGTB incorporates a lot of different things like art appreciation and poetry and learning the calendar, idk. So many little things that I wouldn’t have thought of, like memorizing parents phone numbers, etc. But that’s in kindergarten. They keep it very interesting!
Learning the days of the week. How to tell time both analog and digital. How to count change and money. Simple cleaning skills and such with parental help
We have a 5yo who did TGTB pre-K last year, and I planned on transitioning her slowly to their new Language Arts K this year. However, I learned as soon as I started flipping through the Kindergarten book that there’s a really big gap between the pre-K and the K books. The Kindergarten Prep language arts book is the perfect bridge between the two. It helps fill in any gaps, helps review, and also introduces pre-reading and some reading skills that are needed for the K book. All that to say, highly recommend the Kindergarten Prep book after the Pre-K book! It’s short, so we just started my daughter’s Kinder year with the prep book, and now we’ve finished it and are moving on to K.
Hello!! I am an OG homeschooler, as in a homeschool kid that is now homeschooling her own kid. What a fun full circle! My mom did the Abeka videos my 6th-12th grade year. I will say that it was a very thorough education BUT it was torture. Ha! Unless they have updated them, all the videos are from classes in the 80s and each video was almost an hour long and so boring. It took a full 6-7 hours to finish each day, on top of the homework they assign. Yes.. homework. Just wanted to throw that out there!! I’m so sure you’ve done research but that’s just my firsthand experience.
Abkea videos take soooo much time for the kids. Definitely look at the time the kid would be required to sit for because it may be more time than you would want them to have to sit still
I have a 5 yo boy who will be 6 in January and a 4 yo girl who will be 5 in March. We are doing the good and the beautiful prek language arts and math k and we absolutely love it so far. My thinking was similar to yours, no rushing or pushing hard not really going by typical "grade level" it takes a lot of pressure off of me and them to think this way and I feel even more confident hearing this from you. So thank u for sharing and encouraging!! 🥰🥰
Just a tip- you can change the settings in IXL so that it shows a letter rather than a grade level. That way, if a kid is working on a skill that doesn’t match their grade level, they see Level C instead of 1st grade. (Also, for anyone who hasn’t gotten it yet- IXL = I excel.)
7:11 YES!!! I see everyone raves about how wonderfully Explode the Code books are, but man are they ugly lol! I know I sound super snobby, I’m really not, I’m just being myself. I have been so close to buying them at least 3x, (I’ve physically touched & browsed them at Mardels) but I talk myself out of them every single time because they’re not even remotely eye-pleasing.
Really great video and was so helpful! We are about to dive in to homeschool and we very much have the same approach of easing into it and just see what works and what our kids gravitate towards.
As a former pre k teacher it means a lot to me that you'd start with mentioning the prek/k ideally isn't rushed into. I'm not sure how to put this in text well, but for the last 2 years we were a homeschool family. Last year my middle child did "Pre-K" and my toddler, on his own will, kept right up with his brother. Of course I have mixed feelings about sending the older 2 to school but I'm relieved my now 3yo won't be wiggling his way into kindergarten like he probably would be if we were homeschooling. Next year he'll probably be the first kid we actually send to prek, but until then he just needs more stories, more play, more exploration.
I have a 4 year old (her birthday is in July), we plan on waiting until January of 2024 (which would technically in public school be her second semester of Kindergarten) to actually start kindergarten unless I see she’s ready before then. Right now we are slowly working through preschool from TGTB
Hi. My daughter turns 4 next February 2023. I downloaded the free curriculums from the good and the beautiful. We're Italian living in Italy but I'm trying to teach English as a second language to my girl. We're already doing "structured" activities in Italian but just 5 minutes a day..
Thank you for this video! My son turned 5 in May so I started his "kinder" year in Aug but I'm thinking I need to relax on it after watching this. We're working on letter recognition and sounds because a friend who has 3 homeschool kids said that's what I need to focus on. I too purchases the good and beautiful and I'm loving the curriculum. But I guess maybe I just need to slow down. He's always asking if school is over yet and we only do it for an hour or so.
Might I add, it was his choice. Hes sooo ready. However my first child waited til six to do a actual curriculum :) every child is so different but they’re equally smart so i can attest, when you start doesn’t delay or advance them :)
My girl is about a whole year older than your girls. 💜 I found a huge gap between the preschool to kindergarten. I recommend doing the kinder prep it made all the difference and we were able to stretch that prek-k year out a little longer. Loving the curriculum videos after you have started!
This was really great! So helpful and gently reminded me to relax! I would love a day in life of homeschooling a preschooler, or learning activities and games I do with my preschool, lessons with a preschool, you get the idea 😂
Are you going to do the TBTG Kinder Prep? I found that to be a great bridge of solidifying concepts before getting into the kindergarten set. It was perfect for my 5 year old!
I have 5 kids using Abeka. We only use the videos for ELA. The rest I teach them. I love it. I was homeschooled and used abeka as well. I would love an update on the IXL later in the year. I thought about it as well but didn’t want to waste the money.
The level K is great. I will say basic reading concepts (sounds and blending) and writing independently need to be met before diving into it. However, the lessons are a great length for little kids only a page or two long.
I appreciate this detailed video. My son is almost 5 and this helps. I’d love to hear about the apps you use when you get around to it. Sending you love and wishing you and your family Happy Holidays
Hi Angela! I wanted to ask if you had given any thought of using all about reading before you decided on TGaTB? I loved your review video on AAR. Just curious! I love TGaTB preschool worked wonderful for us last year. Now we are smoothly working through TGaTB K.
I don’t homeschool but I really wish that I could! I can honestly say that putting my son his birthday is at the end of July in kindergarten right after that was The worst decision possible for him. He is technically my foster Sandra’s been in my home since birth and we’re waiting for his adoption. We basically have to do what the school directions to do but he had to repeat kindergarten because socially and academically he just was not ready to move on. oddly enough I made me think of myself as a child my birthday is at the end of June and while I was absolutely ready to start school being the youngest child in my class every year swas terrible. I think they should move the birthday deadline as a whole. Oh I always watch your homeschool videos And I hope that one day I can make the decision for both my kiddos and homeschool! Thank you for doing curriculum videos every year!
Thanks for sharing all this! When I was teaching in the classroom I used IXL all the time as reinforcement to my lessons. It is really great! There is another program called Zearn that is great for math intervention too!
Omg! Two things! What lip gloss are you wearing? And also, is there ANY advice or video you can make to give a rough idea how you homeschool multiple children and how to fit it all in the week! This is my first year with 3 homeschooling kids and I am struggling so terriblyyyy navigating how to make it work! ❤️ Would love to know the general schedule you follow ☺️💕🙏🏻 thanks so much!
We have been using explode the code and like you said with the pictures and sounds. You switched to BOB books where did you get them?I have a "3rd and 5th" grader.
Would you suggest using IXL as well as The Good and The Beautiful Math level K? I'm concerned my son would get confused. Thank you for the homeschooling advice!
How are you combing TGATB with AAR? I see you mentioned both and I have used both and love them equally. I’m teaching my 5 year old how to read with AAR but missing the extra stuff I know the TGATB offer. But I also love keeping the kindergarten year simple: love to know your approach on this. ❤️
I would highly suggest looking into Prenda Treasure Hunt Reading. It is a free program with videos for each lesson and my son LOVES it and he was a VERY reluctant learner when it comes to anything to do with reading.
My daughter is super excelling in tgatb kindergarten she’s 4 but my son I can see us holding off till last minute he has zero interest in it at all which I’m fine with. :)
I have a question, if my child isn’t of compulsory age this year. She’s 5 but won’t be 6 until after the school year starts….can I start her in kindergarten this year and then next year when she’s school aged, start in her 1st grade or would she need to start in kindergarten? I don’t want her to necessarily be 7 in kindergarten ya know…
Thank you for the resource listing. I am pulling my 8 yr old out of school for 4th grade next year. I am working full time and trying to juggle it all. He struggles with writing and the school basically had washed their hands of him. He is a straight A student so it's so hard. Do you have writing or Journaling ideas?
Teaching Basic Writing Skills by Judy Hochman is a great program. SRSD (self-regulated strategy development) is another great approach. As a teacher, those are things I would use in the classroom. I’m not sure how accessible they are without attending the trainings, but they are programs that give students frequent, small “wins” in their writing.
I am so glad you haven’t bought the Abeka videos yet. Their mindset about education seems to be about as far opposite of yours as possible. I really believe you’d hate it so much. 🥴 I actually love your mindset with education and it’s polar opposite to how myself and my friends grew up and I love it! Thanks for sharing, always.
I had to read it a few times, but it sounds like you’re glad she shares her experience which is opposite of how we knew/were raised and it’s a good thing!
Anne is Abe example to Abeka their approach is more rushed, get in as much as early on? I’ve heard really good things about it, but know it’s on an advanced pace. Thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing! I love all of your content but the Homeschool content has been especially helpful as I am new to this journey. I am working on such a small budget but I do have a subscription to ABC Mouse and I do like it but I recently found Khan Academy which is a free online curriculum site but my focus here is their app for toddlers to 2nd or 3rd graders (I cant remember the grade it suggests to go to but like you know, that's all it is anyway, a suggestion) anyway I thought it might help a momma who has a tight budget. Khan Academy Kids is a FREE app and I like it much better than ABC Mouse and so do my kids. My 1st grader and my 2 year old both love this app and even my 4th grader has enjoyed this app.
Abeka is fantastic, but it IS a LOT. And it's really not hands off in the Kindergarten/1st grade/2nd grade. It was where we began, and I'm still using it for my Kindergartener, but Parent-led- not computer led. I think that their phonics are absolutely amazing, but All About Reading does the same for a fraction of the cost, and their Math program is unbelievable as well, but Horizons is also similar & a fraction of the cost, but without the benefit of the computer for help. Their Science & History leave things to be desired, in my opinion. I switched away from those almost immediately.
Knowing what curriculums you usually are drawn to, and the work load you have already, if you were to go with Abeka, I'd highly suggest doing it parent-led, but I also would say that you probably will like aspects of it, but won't probably LOVE it. And my kids ended many days in tears when that was our main curriculum. My now 8th grader has a genius IQ & Autism, and he cried daily. This year, we've gone with IEW, Horizons, Beautiful Feet, Apologia, and Masterbooks, and he is thriving. Zero days end in tears now, and he excels. My 2nd grader is using TGTB Level 1, Horizons Math, Abeka Handwriting, Notgrass History, and TGTB Science, and he is also thriving. Last year, he was still using Abeka & we struggled. I can't begin to describe the difference changing away from Abeka has made in my kids.
I have heard TH-camrs mention anc mouse, after this video I gave it a shot. Downloaded and payed. Then the app says offline …. It doesn’t work. Hopefully I get my money back. Now I wonder if it only works for TH-camrs who promote it

How do you manage this?
I would love to see a video talking more about some of the common gaps you see in a lot of homeschooling stuff.
I think tgatb should do holiday doodle books my kids are obsessed with the doodle books.

Yes, I agree and would also definitely recommend doing TGTB kindergarten prep between preschool and level K!
I found the same thing! We are almost done with the prep book now and so happy we did it first!
I got the kindergarten book and I felt like my son definitely wasn’t ready for that yet so I will be getting the pre k prep book and do that first
I recommend bob books readers and workbooks together to any kid learning to read!! Loved them!
She named her hamster “Eyebrow” - 😂🤣😂. That just tickled me silly! Kids are so cute and funny.
Hello!! I am an OG homeschooler, as in a homeschool kid that is now homeschooling her own kid. What a fun full circle!

Oh, that’s a really kind way of teaching. Good idea! No 3rd grader needs to see 1st grade when they’re struggling in an area!
We have absolutely loved the new K! I’m blown away how much smoother it and thorough
We love TGTB especially the new stuff. Wanted to share another great place to get readers that are beautiful Dash into Learning. ❤️

Have you heard of Prodigy? At least that's what I think it's called. It has something to do with math. My grandkids used it and loved it.
As a former pre k teacher it means a lot to me that you'd start with mentioning the prek/k ideally isn't rushed into.

Easy Peasy is as also great! Free and more structure.
Can you show a routine of pre k and k kids look like and how many hours kids at this level should study?
Might I add, it was his choice. Hes sooo ready. However my first child waited til six to do a actual curriculum :) every child is so different but they’re equally smart so i can attest, when you start doesn’t delay or advance them :)

Are you going to do the TBTG Kinder Prep? I found that to be a great bridge of solidifying concepts before getting into the kindergarten set. It was perfect for my 5 year old!
I came to say this!
You always give me a boost for my day, to go live the homeschooling mom life…even if you’re simply discussing curriculum. 😉 Thank you, Angela! 🤍
This year I'm trying out something new, that's IXL. So far, I like it and my little ones do too.
I have 5 kids using Abeka. We only use the videos for ELA. The rest I teach them. I love it. I was homeschooled and used abeka as well. I would love an update on the IXL later in the year. I thought about it as well but didn’t want to waste the money.
I adore you! How you do it all momma?Bless your heart.
-from a new homeschooling mom of 2.🙏💕
These are my favorite videos of yours! ❤
Also, I love your sweater! I must know where to get one of my own.
ST Math has homeschool access, and they're a fabulous math program aligned with the standards.
The level K is great. I will say basic reading concepts (sounds and blending) and writing independently need to be met before diving into it. However, the lessons are a great length for little kids only a page or two long.
TGATB kinder prep would be a great bridge between the preschool and K. I’m surprised she didn’t even mention it
my kid just turned 3 and uses some abeka stuff. (2s and 3s) but I can't wait to use TGTB with him when he's ready
The Good and The Beautiful curriculum looks great. I like consumable workbooks. Thanks for sharing!
What do you think about the “Yelicious Busy Activity Binder Kit” on Amazon? Would love your feedback on this
We've loved the Endless Reader app!
The Good and the Beatiful App is amazing for Kindergarten. We do TGTB with explode the code.

We have been using explode the code and like you said with the pictures and sounds. You switched to BOB books where did you get them?I have a "3rd and 5th" grader.
You are doing a good job
Dif you see their kindergarten prep book?
I love that Ivy named her mouse “Eyebrow”. 😂
Will you review the materials, etc. that you use for Rosie. Or did I miss it somehow?
Is the good and beautiful curriculum a Hawaii based curriculum only? I can’t find them in the US on Facebook
By any chance, do you have a discount code for The Good and the Beautiful?
Also what books are you having your highschool kids reading?
Did you get them each their own set for the preschool set?
Would you suggest using IXL as well as The Good and The Beautiful Math level K? I'm concerned my son would get confused. Thank you for the homeschooling advice!
I also have 2 kids that I will teach the preschool Langauage and art of the Good and the Beautiful - do I need to course books, or will just one do?

My daughter is super excelling in tgatb kindergarten she’s 4 but my son I can see us holding off till last minute he has zero interest in it at all which I’m fine with. :)
I have a question, if my child isn’t of compulsory age this year. She’s 5 but won’t be 6 until after the school year starts….can I start her in kindergarten this year and then next year when she’s school aged, start in her 1st grade or would she need to start in kindergarten? I don’t want her to necessarily be 7 in kindergarten ya know…
Do kids need social studies in kindergarten?
Do you still have your photography course available?
How has homeschooling changed for you legally since you've moved?
Based on previous Q&As, no because they’re in the same state.
I am so glad you haven’t bought the Abeka videos yet. Their mindset about education seems to be about as far opposite of yours as possible. I really believe you’d hate it so much. 🥴
I actually love your mindset with education and it’s polar opposite to how myself and my friends grew up and I love it! Thanks for sharing, always.
Wow. That didn’t make much sense. Had a whole glass of wine tonight and I’m unable to express myself now. Fantastic. 😂
Thanks!
Is an example*
EYEBROW!!! Lol
Man, Abeka really is torture. 😬😬
I stopped using ABC mouse after my son was changing his avatar into girls clothes and hair styles. I emailed them and no response.
I have heard TH-camrs mention anc mouse, after this video I gave it a shot. Downloaded and payed. Then the app says offline …. It doesn’t work. Hopefully I get my money back. Now I wonder if it only works for TH-camrs who promote it
Ps I took two hours trying to get it to work. Including help from the app which is not a live person, just a bot masking you questions in circles
you don't need to spend that kind of money for preschool and kindergarten.
