Fair play Bruce, that was an epic journey. Well done to Electric motorcycle company for having the guts to help out, especially when it 'appears' that the indusrty was against the idea!
This has to be, one of the most honest, consise and fairest, most balanced video i've seen about electric bikes.
Like many, i'm no fan of electric bikes, but do understand that (at present), this is the alternative to petrol.
Unfortunately, it does show the short comings of the 'currrent' infastructure, and the lack of facilties available, especially to bike riders. Maybe these companies will take note of your comments and improve things?

It was an epic journey and very interesting indeed. But (and here's the but) electric bikes as with electric cars, are a retrograde step in personal transportation. I could go on a massive rant at this point but but I'll just say this..... A lot of people and in particular politicians have been mesmerized by the rantings of a tiny tiny minority who are selling us an idea that the end of the world is nigh with ever more deranged tales of the world ending if we don't change our ways. Trust me, I've been listening to the climate debate since the early 1970's and all the predictions of doom which have been made since then.... Not a single one of them has happened, not one! The world isn't going to end any time soon, despite what Greta and people of her ilk would like us believe.... And yet here we are?

Great series Bruce. Sadly it confirms the current issues with electric bikes... over priced and under range. Also the price of using the fast chargers is slowly closing on the cost of petrol. The technology needs to make a massive leap before it's realistic for touring. At £20k+ I just can't see them making any dent in the market with all its limitations. However 125cc equivalent bikes like the horwin cr6 or super soco tk max are actually a real choice as a city commuter... under £5k and 50-60 miles range.

I’m totally with you on thought bud.
Sadly I think the whole ‘electric revolution’ is just a nice way to reduce traffic on the roads. As price of vehicles and electric skyrocket, all but the wealthy and businesses will be able to afford it, forcing lots of people to either take public transport of seek other means - which is exactly what ‘they’ want.
That’s my tin foil hat wearing belief anyway 😉👍

*Savage* documented proof that ‘lec-only is a non-starter. You can say “it’s coming” all you like, but if that experience is what is coming no UK gov would ever survive enforcing it on all motorists. The only use case that ‘works’ is the micro-trip where you won’t *need* to recharge that day/trip. The amount of time and distance burned in the name of finding/filling - maybe having to move on because of outages or no-end-in-sight use of chargers - is simply a waste. Who would build a trip around such lottery circumstances? Even if you did unicorn it so that you always had a charge … 5 mins versus waaaaay-more-than-that and with questionable facilities or cover while you wait. Nobody (aside from those glueing themselves to things) is up for this as the only option for travel. And that’s before we even have an honest discussion about costs to own and battery/power impact to environment.
So thank you Bruce for putting yourself out on a limb and highlighting many significant problems with this proposition. As Mr Bannatyne was fond of saying “and for those reasons … I’m out”.

Is it possible the government officials don't really care if the electric bikes really work? I mean their main care about is doing away with petrol powered vehicles. It just seems like if the government really wanted electric vehicles to succeed they would have invested and built the infrastructure first.

I did not see here in Ireland charging station like those in your video with multiple points and some amenities and service. Brilliant vid and conclusion.
I'm not a dinosaur saying no to these just because they're different :
[1] Too expensive as it's (b)leading edge tech.
[2] The tech is developing rapidly so that initial investment doesn't really pay back in cost of ownership. Who will want a bike thats got tech that's way out of date after just 2-3 years? I commute (25miles each way) and could fast charge at work for free. Even with that I'm scared of the costs. Plus if I made it work for commuting I'd need another bike for tours.
[3] The range is limited to start with
[4] You're not meant to go below 20% or above 80% so you're left with 60% of the limited range to start with.
[5] The infrastructure isn't there so you have to allow for them not working, all being used etc so from the range you have to keep more in your pocket
[6] How could I go on a group ride when I have unique refuelling requirements? If we all had electric we couldn't all charge together anyway.
I'm not a blinkered hater. It simply doesn't work for me and the way I use bikes. I'll still follow the subject with interest and it's been a great series of vids to capture how it is now.
    p.s. Bruce, you're mad!

Epic journey. The comments are interesting. In 2017 I drove to split and back in a tesla with a 280 mile range. It worked. For me the decision by zero not to provide dc charging makes it a Sunday toy or a commuter and is baffling. The ribelle is really an electric street fighter. As a small volume super high finish performance bike it's more v4s or mv Augusta than mass volume gs. For me the real failing is not adding a bike specific routing tool that takes your average kwh per mile and plans a dynamic route. KTM and BMW have made bike/phone mapping that works. The reason a tesla is stress free is the planner that will take you from A2B and you only charge the volts you need for each leg. Would I chop in my s1000rr, not sure, I'm tempted, but I would keep the old 2008 990adv just in case.

Interesting findings Bruce. I do like the idea of electric, but thinking about all the aspects, not just using electric, but manufacturing and disposal, it's not really beneficial.
If manufacturers put as much money into developing hydrogen as they have electric, we'd be way further forward in future proofing transport and the environment. Motorcycles might have to stay powered by fossil fuels but cars, buses, trucks, vans etc could easily be powered by hydrogen.

Great content as ever. I just don't see the point in forcing electric on bikes. If they're good enough, let people choose them but the environmental impact of ICE bikes is tiny/negligible. If you want to electrify vans/trucks etc fair enough but it shouldn't be mandated.

Great videos Bruce but I do wish you'd shared more of the journey, it's not a proper TeapotOne video without at least one "Look at THAT!" 😂
In my humble, you have proved it eminently doable.
I always felt that he journey on a bike is more about the ride than the destination anyway so I genuinely don't understand the level of hate directed at electrics.
Even at the high prices you quoted for fast charging, it's almost half the price, so if you take away the time constraint, you could have done the same trip for a lot less, food and coffee costs withstanding.
I'd be stopping every 150-200 miles just for toilet breaks and to loosen up my joints. With that in mind, the way I see it, the bike can refill itself while I do that. With a petrol pump I'd have to stand and hold the nozzle in place before or after I do that.
If time isn't an issue, go electric and enjoy the leisurely pace and plan your journey around stops with reliable, cheap charging but if you want to do it fast however, take an petrol bike.
The Chinese have introduced a battery recently that can charge a car in less than 10 minutes, in less than five years, they'll be on par or quicker.

  • @thenuneatonnomad5357
    @thenuneatonnomad5357 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

A really good series as usual Bruce. The limitations of the bike itself were known and expected beforehand. What the trip highlighted was the inadequacy of the charging network in general. The unreliability of the chargers themselves and the frustration caused by chargers being used by others.
Add to that the absence of any facilities for motorcyclists.
This appalling cliff edge policy of banning petrol bikes (which will achieve practically nothing environmentally) and I am sad for the future of our great love of motorcycling and touring.
There will be enough petrol bikes to see me out I’m sure but I’m not happy.

Just been watching Stuart Fillingham's channel edition about batteries in EV's. He implied that using fast chargers or charging beyond 80% regularly wears out the batteries faster than standard charge speeds, or keeping max charge to less than 80%. Obviously, 80% charge means less range. Even more food for thought. Another issue was electric car dealers refusing to take eight year old electric cars in part exchange for replacement cars.

The problem with the number of chargers is you need 4 or 5 times the number of charge "pumps". You get to a petrol station even if it's full a pump will open up every 10 minutes or less. No one occupies a pump for hours. Going electric is more about controlling people than anything else.
Edit to add. Still think this was a fun series of videos. Very informative AND entertaining. Good job Bruce!!!

    • @StereoFozzie

I pop on and watch these videos out of interest, as I’m a lead engineer for one of the biggest providers of power stations in the UK. The “control” conspiracy really lacks any real foundation.
The more accurate take, which I’ve seen first hand is that electric vehicles at present have used lithium as it’s cost effective. They know the limitations, but new nickel type and graphene type batteries are not economic for mass production.
You aren’t being controlled, you are being charged the R&D cost to move us over to batteries that can deliver 5-6 times the capacity for their given size, and take much higher charging currents. It’s as usual, about money.

    • @siraff4461
      @siraff4461 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@StereoFozzie I would say the truth is somewhere in the middle. Money is always the big reason but when there are mandates to have gps, speed limiters and so on being levied at every chance it does make you question why that is.
Bikes don't need built in gps to work. They also don't need built in speed limiters (or capability I believe the wording was). Things like ABS I feel are an intrusion on a bike but I can see where the legislation comes from so fair enough and (good) modern systems aren't bad but there is no good reason I can think of that my bike needs the ability to be remotely shut down on me at someone's will.
I've been a big proponent of ev's over the years but there really has to be some balance. They have largely been oversold on spec and overpriced for what they offer.
I see no real reason for full battery ev's at the moment because a smaller battery and efficient engine work better as an overall package for most people's needs. Right now a realistic 50 miles ev then decent range on ice is pretty much the best compromise - with outliers who can make use of 70-odd miles per day or so. Once its much past that you have a vehicle with a large, heavy battery which took a load of resources to make that it will hardly ever use and is still limited on range and charge speed.
Once batteries are large enough and fast charging enough to deal with whatever is thrown at them that may well change.

    • @StereoFozzie
      @StereoFozzie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@siraff4461 The control argument is as old as humanity itself, which is why I don’t believe it too much. Look at any video of when laws regarding things like seatbelts were brought in, it’s all comments around the nanny state, or “all about control”. And I’ve adjusted for it as I’ve seen how the higher rungs of government work, it’s chaotic and no one person gets the time to do much else than stuff their pockets.
Corporate control is where the find elements of the problem that most often causes people to call out conspiracy. And I’ve met the type who is hell bent on an idea being “the future”. You point out a technical flaw and are met with a stare that is almost psychopathic. People lose their careers over it. But even these people are mostly obsessed with having their name on history for having brought something in. There’s too much narcissism in the way of you being controlled in effect. Things like built in GPS has been a feature on cars for decades now, and was seen as a premium commodity. Ultimately any smart phone can track you, or laptop, PC, hell even your smart thermostat knows your habits intricately. Online privacy will be a valuable thing in the future.
As to the EV argument, the I3 has a 660cc range extender in its boot. I often felt it waiting until 30% charge to turn on was wrong, it should work alongside the battery to maximise efficiency, or at least have the option to do so. I think hybrids will pick up again, but perhaps with hydrogen rotaries, instead of fossil fuels. As I say, full lithium EV vehicles are just part of the mix, they will be phased out the moment graphene batteries are viable. As these will have 3-6 times the power density, meaning 3-6 times smaller, and don’t fatigue under high charge loads. You can see this in the charging infrastructure that is being rolled out, I’ve had a hand in a 220kW charge station, where the plan was to have 80 bays on a motorway services. This is far in excess of anything any lithium battery on the market can tolerate, because the future will be high speed charge batteries that don’t stress under the force of charging, and have 25 year life spans even if charged like that daily (making 50+ possible for casual use). The organisation I work for is fixated on hydrogen, or more specifically, owning the supply of it that is made into bio fuel, or supplied to industrial partners to fuel modern gas boilers or engines that produce a combination of heat and power.

Its been sneaking in for a long time with cctv everywhere, anpr everywhere and so on.
Gps was something I used as a pointer and as you say it's been around for phones for a long time but when it's mandatatory even in vehicles with no phone or need for connection it's hard to see what the reason could be apart from connectivity for someone else's purposes.
I've said for ages a plug-in is currently probably the best use of resources until we can sort decent batteries out. I even drive one for that very reason. All my daily stuff is electric and any out of range stuff uses all the battery first then it behaves as a hybrid after. Its a great system with my only gripe being that it was only available in an suv - which I neither need or want but I'll take the efficiency and put up with.

@@siraff4461 You have to wonder what the real reasoning is behind the nanny state. If ubiquitous CCTV and obligatory gps trackers in cars are to combat street crime and car theft, why is the clear up rate for burglaries at an all time low? And how often do we hear of stolen cars being recovered thanks to their gps tracker chips? Despite all their tools, the police rarely show any interest in solving everyday crimes, so why are we all so willing to accept intrusions into our privacy in exchange for a broken promise to keep us safe?

I have been watching your trip and others with electric bikes and cars, without fail they are dominated by charging issues, out of order, busy, crap locations, etc etc. When watching ICE vehicles on you tube, filing the tank is barely mentioned, because it’s just not an issue, how many petrol stations do you visit which are out of order!
I get they are nice to ride and drive, but too much of a ball ache to charge, and low ranges. Not worth it for us real people.
Let’s just hope synthetic fuels come quickly enough to save us from the net zero fanatics!

Genuinely surprised that the infrastructure is not there. The points where you had to drive over 10 miles to find another because you couldn’t wait or the charger was broken would have been the point where I would have just gone home. A lifetime of petrol and diesel usage at pumps and being in and out in less than 5 minutes has conditioned me to be less than patient for this. I remember when Tesla first came about, their original idea seemed to be , battery changing stations. And I think that is an approach being attempted in China. Also, if only we lived in a place where roads could be electrified so charging could occur as you drive. Again, U.K. government gives so little to local councils that where I live in south cambs, we seem to just drive from one pot hole to another. I want a functioning electric or clean energy future , it’s a huge shame that there is no joined up thinking between innovation, government and local authorities. Maybe all along, hydrogen was the route to go but it’s too late. What the world is screaming for is true innovation in battery chemistry and design. Not to academic level of proof of concept but to manufacturing scale and that is so much easier said than done.

I’ve recently moved to an EV car and although 80% or more of my charging is from home, you don’t realise the incidental costs of EV ownership when using the public chargers. Well done in completing the challenge, don't know how you managed it. One point to consider is that with the restricted choice of working and available chargers, how will group rides fare with charging to complete the ride?
What about charity rides that can "swamp" a petrol station (likely even worse at a recharging point) because of the location to the ride. If I lived and worked in a big city I would seriously consider an electric bike to commute but not for the social side of biking as recharging it would take up too much of my free time.

On top of it, our destination had a charger but another car was connected to it for the entire weekend. The next closest one, which was not close, turned out to be private. The 3rd closest was not as advertised. Electric has a long way to go before its not a ball ache to live with.

Loved this series Bruce, thank you. Always enjoy your endurance rides. I'm sure the infrastructure, battery range & technology will only get better (it has to if we are being pushed into electric within the next 10 years).
Still an environmental concern for me about the manufacture of the batteries, the disposal or recycling of used batteries. The fire hazard of the batteries in a crash (Seen 2 this summer near me that the fire brigade struggled to put out).
And the biggest concern is how will the grid cope with 10million cars plugging in each evening (a rough guess as there are 32.5 million registered cars in the UK) ? Without more power stations, it simply will not.

Would be interesting to see your sources for the grid capacity issue. If we discount the 3% of electric vehicles already registered (which probably account for disproportionate miles) and simply consider replacing 30m ICE cars with BEV. Using a 20mile/day average and a conservative efficiency of 3miles/kWh that would require 200GWh of capacity. Yikes that sounds like a lot and yes if everyone plugged in their car at peak times and charged at the maximum rate over about an hour then sure you'd need another 50 huge power stations or a couple hundred offshore wind farms. BUT with the majority of charging being slow AC (over 6-10 hours) intentionally scheduled at night when electricity is cheapest. This hypothetical overnight shift would be in no way insignificant but would actually HELP balance the energy usage profile by bringing the overnight drop off up to nearly peak levels.
So IF everyone traded in their ICE vehicles with a hypothetical supply of BEVs and assuming their usage and habits didn't change we might actually see a more efficient usage of the network without much increase in peak demand (requiring additional infrastructure). This is before we get in to the revolutionary potential of V2G systems, load balancing opportunities, and stability of residential supply.
Not that I'm advocating this as a good option: manufacturing, public charging infrastructure, even the required home chargers are all already behind and on much shallower trajectories.

First off, that was a brave and epic undertaking. Helmet off to you. I don't think I could of done that journey even with a intravenous feed of energy drink.
I have an electric car and all the issues you faced with charging, range etc also apply. With those it's worse than driving/riding fossil fuel. But if you don't regularly travel far and can charge at home electric vehicles make a lot of sense as a convenient mode of transport. Therein lies the crux for me though. I ride a bike because it's a fun experience and the ICE plays a big role in that. Electric bikes and cars are just not exciting. They have a party trick of accelerating fast and doing it in near silence and that's it really. Great for A to B to A (to charge again) but not what I'd call fun.
Have you worked out how long you were not actually making progress on your journey? For 39 charges at 20 mins a charge that's 13 hrs and that doesn't take into account time spent looking for charge points or resting/sleeping.

Still, charging times seem to be the biggest challenge electric is facing (other than the folks that seem to hate them because they don't sound like a Moto GP bike or a Harley - on the face of it a dumb reason - but motorcycles are an emotional investment and a good argument can be made that it's dumb to ride bikes. I'm not knocking them and they clearly have a place for some people just not me. The frustrations of charging, finding them, waiting for one to be available, waiting time to charge, chasing a route that has them on the way, missing out whole areas of country due to needing them. I want an engine, I like engines, I like the sound of engines, I understand engines.. EVs will be nothing more than just a mode of transport with little character (for me) part of the journey is enjoying the machine that's getting me there. Off topic slightly, it's one of the reasons I get the boat to Calais not the train, I like the journey on the boat its charming and its part of my experience of the journey, the train just gets you there... Not knocking it Bruce, just not for me I just want the choice..and not to be told 'no more petrol engines'.

Thanks Gary - Alec Sharp from English Electric Motor Co makes a very good and valid point on the latest ‘Bru Time’ episode actually regarding synthetic fuels and the development of alternative fuels etc.
His take on it is that the electric engine is FAR more efficient than an ICE engine, so the future MUST be with electronic engines - it’s just how thaw energy required to power them is stored (batteries) which has to be developed. He doesn’t think batteries as we know them are the answer, it’s a very interesting chat if you have the time to listen/watch it.

Awesome effort, and series! Massive respect for stucking it through. Love EV’s, as a busdriver for public transport here in Belgium, we are just starting with an electric fleet and I love the way these beasts drive. My take on EV’s and full electric is that, while it has it’s place for daily commuting, like you said yourself for long distance it is not (yet) the be all and end all to replace petrol. However I do think there’s a market for the plug-in hybrid style of vehicles, and looking at the bigger touring/adventure bikes, they have the room to do the half-and-half approach of a plug-in hybrid.

Impressed wtith your stamina mate , ive fell asleep on my bike before and waking up in a different lane on the motorway isn't fun . But that aside really like video not sold on electric...yet but a very good video

Wouldn't it make some sense if you could simply swap out your battery for a charged one. If batteries were produced to a standard , one size fits all. And would pull in the lost time at your charging station. Great series and tough trip . Good you made it safe and sound and trouble free.

Alec and I chat about this in the latest ‘Bru Time’ podcast episode.
It comes down to the physical size of battery needed for a bike like this. The battery on these big electric bikes is around 100kg in weight, so it’s just not possible to have an interchangeable battery for them at this stage.
The smaller interchangeable batteries are for much smaller bikes with much lower range and power
