  • Devitt Insurance asked if I'd like to do a Bikesafe course with the Met police, and being a police trained biker and driver I thought it would not only be a good refresher for me, but also an opportunity to explain why 'we' do what we do when riding to the police motorcycle training system of Roadcraft.
    In part 1 we start at the Bikeshed in central London and ride out of town through heavy traffic as I give a full commentary, explaining road positions, observations, filtering tactics and more.
    Part 2 is coming next and covers open road riding in the NATIONALLLLLSSSSSSS!

    I wish more motorcyclists would do this type of video. Even though there doesn't seem to be a concensus on how every situation should be met, one can glean a lot from hearing other riders views and thoughts. As a beginner motorcyclist I do this "talking to myself" on every ride and I find it helps me stay focused and, I believe, be a safer rider. I don't want to be thinking about what's for dinner while riding and the internal running commentary is very useful to stay alert. Thanks for sharing!

      Mate absolutely, doing a commentary on your ride is really useful as you’ll find you actually raise your vision more to start noticing things earlier - just so you can get them in your commentary.
      That in turn means your actually subconsciously starting to bring this information into your plan for your ride, giving you more time to react.
      I find if my commentary becomes rushed and starts to miss detail, then I’m either going to quick for the conditions or haven’t raised my vision enough 👍

      @@teapotone Thanks Bruce, that's exactly what happens! I noticed it just yesterday, running commentary as if I was making a video made me much more aware of where to look, when and how to brake, how to broadcast my intentions to other road users, use of mirrors, looking ahead and scanning back, choosing my lines through bends etc. It's a good use of mindfulness, increasing both safety and the enjoyment of riding a motorbike. Looking forward to your next video, they are always both useful and entertaining!

      Motorcycle Roadcraft is a great read for anyone wishing to learn the police system. If applied correctly it covers virtually every eventuality on the road and provides a "system" to deal with them. Combine that with a little post test training and you'll improve massively

      The great thing about roadcraft is that there isn’t necessarily a right or wrong. What it is doing is keeping you actively thinking about your position relative to risk. Nobody gets it “textbook” as each situation is open to interpretation.

    Getting some riders to consider advanced training is like trying to get a smoker to quit. Many don't accept they need to learn any more and their pride won't let them keep an open mind. Well done for promoting bike safe and congrats on a very popular upload. Russ. ☺

      Whearas I as a brand new rider on my CBT am chomping at the bit to learn the maximum amount of knowledge because I actually think its cool to be able to ride at the best standard you can.

    I must admit as I get older I really enjoy the technical aspect of this type of riding over the flat out adrenalin fuelled riding of my younger days, there is something really satisfying about making smooth and reasonably rapid progress.

    I did the BikeSafe course with Hampshire police a while back, absolutely brilliant.
    I would recommend it to everyone. Riding home afterwards I felt so much more confident with the advice I was given.

    I absolutely loved my Bikesafe session. Was a lot of fun and I could not believe how much I learnt. I highly recommend it. Was absolutely fascinating riding around with a Policeman behind you and watching the other road users reacting. It was also very difficult, even though I was repeatedly told to ride as normal, overtake more etc, to break the speed limit (in nationals) with a Police bike in your rear view mirror

      Have you gone on to do Advanced Training? Given you enjoyed Bikesafe so much and Bikesafe is meant to inspire you to go on the the Advanced Test.

      To be honest as a biker off nearly forty years I still think safety all the time when out on a ride my eyes are looking ahead for all hazards and check my mirrors like you do . Bike safe is such a great thing todo and as you being ex police rider I think road position is the most important thing when riding . Like I said best one yet please more like this

    I've had a full licence for around 40 years and have never undergone any further training, so recently attended a BikeSafe workshop with Gloucestershire Police. I found the whole experience absolutely excellent. It was also no accident that I was also rereading a new copy of Roadcraft (last read in the late 1970's) in the run up to the day. Saccadic masking was just one of the things I learned, also to pay a lot more attention to roadsigns "they are there for a reason". I am glad to say that my feedback was similar to yours (steady son, that helmet'll be too small in a minute) which was extremely reassuring, plus the assessment route around Gloucestershire was a complete delight. To anyone who rides... do BikeSafe it is absolutely worth doing.

    Did a bike safe course a few years back with Dorset police really enjoyed the day once I'd got over the initial worry of being followed by the rozzers. Can only be thankful to the police riders who do this in their own time and I would recommend everyone to do this course 😀

    As a former police driver trainer and current private instructor, I am very impressed that the police run these days. I teach riders in Australia and the course is so limited in that it is on site with a short road ride. This kind of training is priceless and at £60 unbelievable value for money.

      In NZ we have the ACC Ride Forever initiative that is a one day course, some theory followed by slow bike skills and emergency braking with the after lunch session focused on on road skills. It is broken into three different courses, bronze for beginners giving them the necessary skills to reach full license. Silver for riders returning to motorcycling or just wanting a refresher. Gold for experienced riders looking to hone skills. Brilliant scheme and amazing value for money at $50 a course.

    Nice video, very informative. Hendon shuffle makes sense, so many riders don't put it in neutral. I've a habit of knocking mine into neutral as I come down the box but tend not to cover the rear brake but will think about starting to do so. Cheers

    My old chap was an advanced police driver so I had it drummed into me from a young age. Thinking back on it and realising just how relevant the Road craft manual was and still is, bearing in mind that the 1980’s edition that I was trained with even today is bang on. It has saved my bacon many times and one lesson above all others is observation. It’s a skill that covers not just observable hazards but road surface conditions too snd other environmental cues that many car drivers miss. The other really useful tool is use of the limiting or vanishing point, especially when on unfamiliar roads.
    35 years on things have got worse on the roads which makes road craft even more relevant and a damned sight more useful than the revenue generating riding tests for new riders which are a real bone of contention.
    My only reservation with the Roadcraft manual and motorcycles is that it still fails to acknowledge how modern motorcycles generate most grip into a corner. The smooth riding around a corner on power develops less grip than braking into a corner (with all braking in a straight line as far as one can towards the apex) which loads suspension and transfers weight to where needed at the front tyre. It’s not as smooth as the power through smoothly technique and needs careful reading of road surfaces and correct approach but if making progress is they way I’ll ride now. At lower to moderate speeds I tend to follow the road craft technique for a more relaxed style.
    Hadn’t realised you weren’t with the force any longer TP. You’ll probably be happier and healthier out of that job but must miss working the with the guys. Best of luck in wherever life takes you and be safe out there!

    My instructor for my first CBT spent the day getting me pull up to a stop with my right foot on the footboard of the step-through scooter and my left foot on the ground, tricky for me after decades of cycling and using my left foot to push down on the pedal when moving away from a standstill. His reasoning being, of course, it would pay dividends if I ever move on to a geared bike. Fast-forward three years, another (geared) CBT, Mod1 and Mod2 training and tests, and the ‘Hendon Shuffle’ - not heard this before lol - is now second nature. Tip of the hat to that first CBT guy! I may be a new rider with much to learn but I’m amazed at the number of riders I see, both on the road or influential TH-cam vloggers, waddling two-footed up to and away from the lights. It may be a small example, but I see it as testimony to the importance of good training, at any level. I’ll be taking a look at any more content you have on this topic, cheers!

    Great video. I did a Bikesafe back in about 2005 (after a few years away from bikes) and it's one of, if not the best 'bang for buck' bike courses you can do.

    Interesting video and ride there matey, I passed my bike test in 1979, after going to a proper training school, so that'll probably give my age away, but the first thing I did was buy the Police riding manual and an advanced riding book, and I've put into practice that advice ever since, interestingly I've always done the 'Hendon Shuffle' perhaps unconsciously, I don't know.
    But about 15 years ago, I met a class one bike cop, through another mate, and we went for a and I use the word "bimble" lightly, on some pretty fast A-roads and he tried to lose me, when we got to where we were headed, he patted me on the back and said "well done mate, I thought I'd lose you and couldn't, so very well done" I was very pleased by that praise, as a guy who has never really had or done any advanced training at least not formally.. perhaps despatching in London in the early 80's helped.
    Sadly I've just sold my most recent bike, and don't know if I'll be getting another at this moment, sad days after 45 years in the hot seat...

    I did Bike Safe in my first year riding in 2007 and it was incredibly helpful. I then read the Police Handbook and those lessons saved my life at least twice. Also, it gave me an appreciation for advanced training and I’ve become extremely efficient and safe.

    On my Rider Refinement Day in June 2022, our Police Rider's briefing included the following on speed management, "30 is 30mph & 40 is 40mph. If you have to overtake & you find yourself at 90mph, that's ok if it's SAFE, but pull it back down. I DO NOT want to see THREE figures...and if you hear the Siren, you know you were bring a C...!" Absolutely brilliant day and I would also highly recommend the course. I enjoyed your clip Bruce and it brought it all back, so thanks for the upload.

    Did my Bike Safe in Hertfordshire, overtaking vehicles at the national speed limit on single carriageway roads with a police rider in hot pursuit felt an almost surreal experience.

    Hi Bruce , I’ve been riding since 83, I’m still learning, I’m an ex paramedic trained rapid responder / biker, I think road craft is an essential bit of reading/ training. I subconsciously ride down the road talking a commentary to myself. I often go out with newer riders and try and get across limit points. Great video 🏍 Mirror signal course mirror signal speed gear.🤣

    Nice to hear the Sacadic masking explained Bruce. Always thought the SMIDSY campaign led riders to believe that a driver pulling out on you didn’t look when they really have but because of how we are wired up they just may not have seen you. Even making eye contact is still never 100% for me.

    Your comment about being in neutral in stops had me thinking. I always thought that being in gear is a good way as you can position your bike so, that you can move to between the cars if someone is trying to rear end you. Mind you I don't live in the UK and we don't get much filtering. What you said makes quite a lot of sense as well.
    I'm usually in gear and holding rear break on red lights. If its a long red light, I might go neutral if there are like 2-3 cars behind me fully stopped.

    I work near the Bike Shed and live in Essex so was familiar with a lot of that route... and will be as you head to Finchingfield. 👍
    I've done IAM and RoSPA so totally get what it's like being followed by coppers, always a bit weird and nervy but they always say they're bikers first and theyve proved that every time.
    Enjoyed that and looking forward to you getting to the twisties.

    Great video Bruce! Too many riders don’t ride intelligently then blame cagers when a bit of thought on their side could have avoided the situation. This sort of riding mindset has made me a better car driver too.

    A lot of people are surprised when I tell them that I ride a motorcycle and that it is one of my passions. They go on to remind me how dangerous it is and that I have a family and so on. The way i ride however, which is similar to those cops makes me feel very safe while riding and i never go over the speed limit. I cannot fathom the ignorance most people have in that it is the responsibility of the motorcyclist to be safe and that motorcycles are not as dangerous as they think they are.

    Loved your commentary as you rode. Took me straight back to when I did my emergency driving before starting as a Paramedic. As you said, learning road positioning and limit points is so valuable and an asset every time you drive and ride. Can't wait for the next one!

    This first video was outstanding. Why it was so impressive was that you were talking what you were thinking, a rare trait, methinks. I’m in the US and unaware whether there’s such a program in my area, so if not, I’m going to determine if there’s interest in starting this program. I look forward to reviewing your subsequent videos. Great service and you have a good, humble way.

    Did the BS course with Cheshire Police before moving on to IAM. Great course, and was impressed by just how fast a fully-loaded and liveried Pan European could be hustled down narrow country roads in the right hands. Ride out with the police and watch how the traffic just parts in front of you like Moses crossing the Red Sea - it’s amazing.😀😀

    Liking the tips. I always cover the rear brake and put it in neutral at traffic lights to give my clutch hand a rest. Never realised why, but I have done it for years

    Great to see a nice ride out through my area Woodford and Chigwell from Shoreditch, I did a Bikesafe on my Pan 1100 15yrs ago and loved it we actually got involved in a shout around Finchley and ended up directing traffic ( left from Ace Cafe) I then got to meet the traffic division guys who undertook the training at a bike show and thank them for the valuable lessons they had taught me, in two instances it actually saved me from harm.

    Cheers for this mate, great video and insight into the course. I'm booked in for Bikesafe next month, really looking forward to it. All being well I'll move onto IAM. The more we can do to keep ourselves and others safe on the road, the better. As road users we all have that responsibility to keep each other safe. Can never have enough training, it's all about lifelong learning and working to improve ourselves.

    Ahh, this reminds me of my direct access training; what a great experience that was. It's served me so well these past five years and also completely transformed my driving (still lots to learn and improve). Thanks for taking us through that 👌🏽

    Great video. I have done the bike safe from the bike shed and thoroughly enjoyed it, the feedback was so useful. You actually rode through my manor also stopping at my local shell.

    Great video! Highly recommended. I would assume that was both incredibly interesting and probably a bit draining as well. You don't think about the number of instinctual things that you do on a bike and then processing them outwardly had to be a unique experience. Nice to hear the officer's feedback as well. Some good skills and things that I catch myself not doing as often as I should.

    Did Rapid Training Bikemaster Level 1, similar but with added for fast progress on twisties etc. Those guys at Rapid are absolutely top notch

      @@teapotone You will love it. I travelled down to Yorkshire from Glasgow to do it. 2 day course1:1 personalised coach.
      I've been riding over 30 years and it's transformed my riding

    Nice one Bruce! I really enjoyed the commentary. I had to do an observed drive in an ambulance today. All good, but I would have rather been out on my Speed Triple for sure!

    Wow, that's so reassuring that my riding day to day sounds like your commentary. I actually do a commentary to myself as I ride, "They're going to overtake the cyclist, stay left", etc. Helps focus the mind in what is a hugely complicated set of procedures which we call "riding". Thanks for sharing.

    Great video. Good commentary during the ride. I had Gordie when I did my bikesafe. Top bloke. I would recommend all riders do this course. I found it really helpful.

    Great vid Bruce, I have done the IAM and always refer to my copy of motorcycle roadcraft, in order to either refresh or reinforce stuff. The over-riding issue though is the fact that we should never stop learning. I always use the line “The more we think we know about the greater the unknown.” This helps me keep a sense of perspective, as “unpredictability” And humankind is one and the same. You must always think, prepare and be aware. Having a ride plan also helps. Ride safe.

    I did one of these bike safe days with the D&C traffic riders, highly recommend doing one if you can, it was a really good day out. My wife was on traffic ( driver ) before she retired

    Thinking of doing this - passed Mod2 about 5 weeks ago and now is when I really do learn a lot more about riding rather than just preparing for an exam...... Bikesafe will, I believe really help me

    Hi Bruce Good vid as always. when you were explaining about vision Ryan at Fortnine has done a video on it a few years back definately worth a watch. I have the ROSPA driver assessors cert and due to have a refresh in June mainly for HGV vehicles, but i apply it to my Bike riding to and after watching the Missenden flyer with the north wales police i use the position 1,2 & 3. a copy of the Roadcraft book is well worth it. looking forward to the next part.
