    That's pretty darn good for a 460, EFI or otherwise. I do love the torque of a 460 as well. The difficult thing is being disciplined to keep it at 60MPH. For a second, I was excited that maybe you were taking the Tdub on a trip somewhere in the van, like Moab or something ;)

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed! Will be interesting to see how much weighing it down effects it. Yeah its so nice hardly even have to touch the gas pedal to get up to speed. So true, would be cool to do this test at different speeds. Haha I wish maybe by next summer it will be ready for some trips but wont have the inside done yet. Will be installing a rear hitch for the tw before too long hopefully

    I always like taking comparison test. When things start to sound funny or costing more, you have a reference point. Good Job. And nice hair cut

    Remember it's about smiles per gallon not miles per gallon. That helps me when I drive my Jeep or put my foot to the floor on my Z3M roadster getting low low single number when launching. Awesome to see the progress you have made on this project.

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      so true! I love driving this van. super smooth on highway. and it will zip right up the mountain passes. nice, hold onto that z3 m it will just go up in value. much more to come!

      The "smiles per gallon" always vanished when I started filling the 2nd fuel tank on my Sportsmobile E250. 12/13 was about the best I ever saw. ;(

    • @onebadsavage26
      @onebadsavage26 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry but I have to disagree. When you're driving an F250 that gets 8 mpg on a Canadian gallon ($6.60 a gallon here) (6.6mpg US gallon). My daily driver (I'm retired) doesn't leave the driveway unless I'm starving or someone is bleeding. I really want to upgrade to a E40d or at least a AOD.

      Thanks! Yeah its a rare one, last year of the big block 460 first year of obd2 also the last 2 years of the 460 they bumped up the horse power and torque to 245 hp and 410 lb⋅ft some people call it the gas-diesel cause the numbers are similar to a turbo diesel haha

  • @WanderingDad
    @WanderingDad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    that is far and away the best mileage I've seen from that motor. mine needed a tune-up badly tho.

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah I didn't expect for it to be that good. it was fully unloaded and only went around 60mph on highway only. around town it will probably be 7mpg haha maintenance can make a difference as well

  • @ViperReApErR

    May want to look into gear vendors, it splits your gears and gives you a double overdrive, lower rpms and around 20% increase in fuel economy

    Hey Buddy I had a 1994 Ford Econoline E350 with the same engine 460 big block 7.5l and I put on a Flowmaster exhaust and a high performance computer chip and my gas mileage was between 13 to 15 mpg on highway, city 8mpg but I loved my Biggo Van , I finally sold it to one of my buddies, so thank you for your videos, your patience is amazing 👏, God Bless 🙌

    That's better than I got in my Express 3500. It had the older 350/5.7, and I could get around 13 on the highway at 65 mph. In town was like 8.

    Once you do your camper build and add all the weight it will probably get around 9 mpg lol. Especially here in Colorado. But really cool van! I kinda want the cargo van version of that.

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha probably especially going up and down the mountain. might depend a lot on how I drive it too. will be interesting to see. I love the torque though. thanks! I actually removed the 2 biggest side windows on this van and welded in cargo van panels that I cut out the junkyard, it worked out better than expected, and now it's like a club wagon/cargo van hybrid, looks super unique and has the perfect amount of windows haha

    I was just reading about hypermiling, you should check out some of the techniques they use to get better gas mileage. Be warned though, their focus is all about mpg, not about getting there quickly.

    • @4WheelKid

    Hey quick question dude, where do you get your replacements parts, I have the same van with the same engine but I'm looking for an air intake hose and I can't get them at the dealer anymore. Any place you recommend or online warehouse where you can get aftermarket parts? Thank you.

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey I have noticed that problem too. cant find the intake pipes for the 460, but I found them for the 351 van, you just have to find stuff/ customize stuff that will work, im going to do a video on replacing mine at some point, I already found and got some rear silicone hoses that go to the throttle body 1 just needs to be cut slightly but need to figure out the front hose still

  • @dono2926

    I'm considering buying one of these but they're probably terrible in the snow

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah not great in the snow, if you have weight in the back and snow tires it should do ok some of them maybe have a limited slip diff, mine is open. So I may install an air locker which will help a lot. You can also convert or find them already converted to 4x4 but it’s expensive and a huge job

    Is that two wheel drive? obviously, if you simply put meaty oversized tires on that it would substantially reduce MPG w/o any added build out weight. What does the van weigh empty like that? (go to Pioneer Sand and weigh it for free :-))

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah its 2wheel drive, they were all 2wd from ford unless a 3rd party converted them. Yeah big tires would do that for sure, this van has the stock tire size on it and stock suspension, the E-350 is just big stock, it even has more ground clearance than my 4runner. Yeah ill weigh it once Its ready for the road before and after build out

    • @aaronclark280
      @aaronclark280 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@4WheelKid thanks. Yeah my 96’ has a Quigley 4x4 and SMB build and weighs 9000lbs with that 460 7.5l it gets 10-11mpg. :-/

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aaronclark280 gottcha. Yeah there is always a trade off. That mpg dont sounds way too bad though. Im sure mine wont be much better when loaded. What gearing do you have? Mine is 3.7 something

    • @aaronclark280
      @aaronclark280 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@4WheelKid I wanna say 3.55 but I lost all my records (and everything else) in the Marshall Fire so can’t confirm off paper and have not checked since. I have BFG 33’ on it. Do you think that sounds under or over geared for tires that size? I’m not educated on such. I believe the previous owner regeared it for the larger tires.

    I wonder how altitude affects gas mileage.

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      should be a little worse at altitude it seems

    • @landengreen6982
      @landengreen6982 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@4WheelKid I was also wondering about 85 vs 87 octane. In lower altitudes, we can't get any gasoline lower than 87 octane. You could add more timing, but I think it would be a wash on cost with the added price per gallon vs what fuel economy gain you'd see.

    Hmm...This "Kid" sound like TDubsKid, I wonder why 🤔 - LOL! - FYI - 1996 Was the "Good" year for pushrod V8 Econolines (OBD2) - 95 and down are OBD1, and 97 and newer were Triton OHC engines...

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha pretty much! Cant wait to get the van fixed up enough to put the tw on the back and start driving around. Exactly. Such a rare vehicle. You hardly ever see the 460 in these to begin with then having obd2 is even more rare. Much easier to diagnose problems. Yeah then the tri motors shoot spark plugs out sometimes haha. This guy on a fb group told me his 96 e-350 with a bigblock 460 was at 370k miles original motor running great until it got totaled by a drunk driver

    I have fords POS EFI on the 4.9 inline 6, that son of a bitch gets 6 MPG, lots of money spent to fix it, you can't do shit to get an OBD1 system functioning correctly, you are better off carburetor, I'm getting ready to have the engine replaced, never want to hear about the durability of a 300 again, they are shit. I wouldn't mind a 460 to replace it.

    • @4WheelKid
      @4WheelKid  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah the early fuel injections were not the best wow that’s terrible. Yeah obd1 seems like a pain. Good to know. Wonder if you could upgrade it to a port fuel injection system

    • @Maples01
      @Maples01 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@4WheelKidNo, the ECM is usually on borrowed time, mine is rare, so cost more, then there is the shitty distributor design, redesigned in the 90's moving the module from it to a heat sink on the fender, still doesn't save you from the poor pickup inside which operates like a crank position sensor. Smog pump and plumbing is another fail point, cracks leading to vacuum leaks, EGR too large, requires a restrictor, which is why some ran poorly when brand new. Vacuum canister under the battery for the emissions, tin can, rusts, and you can't see it, so it's best to eliminate it. When it comes down to it, you are far better off buying a V8 with a carburetor and throwing that damn fuel injected 6 into a dumpster!
