He built a 400 ci one with iron heads and a Trick Flow intake that won vintage class against every thing including a 427 Chevy. It made 517 ft lbs and 597 hp with iron 64 352 ported heads. We found it pretty easy to get 500+ engine dyno horsepers from a relatively cheap, reliable, and street-able 460 with just a MSD, 10.5:1 or so pistons, solid flat lifter cam, springs, adjustable rockers, headers, single plane intake, 850 carb, and mild ported early iron closed chamber heads. Back in the 90;s, it could be done for about $2k for the junkyard core, machining, and parts. Made me wonder why the abundant and unloved 429 / 460 wasn't more popular, especially in NA trucks and fox bodies.

    That was a great old-school iron headed bunch of builds. You were pretty lucky to score that old pre 70s block with the overbored slugs in it, that's a wrecker find right there. From the days when 500 HP was a huge deal and not every driveway could brag about numbers like that.
    Would have been nice to see a comparison of the EFI 460 heads but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that they're probably pigs and would be hard pressed to make any real power so I won't snivel too long and hard. Plus the hassle of digging some out of a wrecking yard and setting up the EFI just to have 1973 power levels. Yay. But yeah, that was a fun series of dyno tests from 'the other guys'.

    The solid cam didn't make that much more power than the hydraulic but it was a big difference in cam timing. A 236/240 is a lot more livable for street driving than a 264/268.
    Maybe the head flow of the ported stock heads was the limiting factor?

    • @hayden6056
      @hayden6056 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've found with mechanicals they don't lose much down low with the gain of smaller lifter lash vs piston movement in a hydraulic and should be judged more at the advertised .006 duration to compare in drivability.

I focused more on the Cleveland and Windsor engines. FE means F!cken Expensive. But I noticed the engine is making a comeback. I've recently sold two of them rebuilt. I found a 360 for cheap. It's nearly finished.

    • @albertgaspar627
      @albertgaspar627 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i'd hate to ruffle feathers, but i think some haven't noticed these series are basically, "let's use the boss' equipment and raid the supply closet" material. FE used to stand for "science name for iron" since they also were heavy as guilt :) nowadays you can pick up a roller 351W block, forged 302 slugs, and a $400 stroker crank and have a 392cid that'll give any 390 a run for its money--cheaper, lighter and there's junkyard EFI for it.
      ford should have done a lot more with the 390 to go up against the 396 in the mid 1960's. they already had a tripower 401 hp formula from 1961. But then Tasca wouldn't have the need to give us the 428 CJ. And of course too bad the 429 didn't become a performance engine until the end of the era--it moved Torinos down the quarter in 13 seconds, pretty stout for 1970. The Lima series would have battled the rat for dominence in the 1970's if only there'd been more CJ heads lying around for hot rodders, but the Rat had been out since 1965 so it had more parts at affordable prices.

      Mine was a 2bolt sprayed plenty and never broke.
      Even cammed it never saw more than 6k...5500 was all you needed they made so much torque from low rpm on you just hit the next gear. You could break the tires loose at a lower rpm for drifting.
