I have one of the last in an F350, 1997 crew cab. I worked on this truck a lot and put a wide band O2 sensor to monitor fuel/air. If you mess with the emissions or the computer is going out they will either run crazy rich or lean. If it goes lean, they get really hot. After I replaced computer and got the EGR sorted out, it run would run 14.7/14.8 except under load and it would richen up, then lean back out. There is just so much volume of air passing through it at all times that if the afr gets off, it makes a big difference. Speed density system works. I got 16/17 on interstate, 12 pulling.
I have a '97 F350 4x4 CC with the 460 and manual transmission and get a bit over 18mpg on the interstate. I have to say I think I like speed density over mass airflow. My intake doesn't have the airhorns in it though. Does yours?
78 or 79 they changed the pan rail from scalloped out on the Lincoln blocks to a stronger straighter surface. The Cylinder Bores came down a little further into the crankcase as well making the Truck blocks a little more desirable for strokes over 4.150. Stroker builds up to 557” can be had easily with little to no grinding required. Add a set of Motorsport CJ, Trick Flow or John Kasse heads and you will have a serious beast. The current engine in our 1970 F250 started life as a low compression 79 truck motor. We used a cast steel Eagle 4.300 crank with BBC 6.700” rods and Custom flat tops for 9.6:1 with the Edelbrock non CJ heads. We topped the engine off with a Weiand Stelth dual plane which is a very very underrated manifold with a huge plenum and a large bore 4150 carb. With a Comp 270S cam and their solid lifters with surface oiling. This engine idles down to a mild lope at 750-800 and has a split personality. Bottom end torque hits like a sledge hammer and the power extends out to around 5500 before flattening out. What I learned from my build so that you don’t have to research on your own is 1) Choose a cam a step longer duration than you normally would. 2) A quality head rebuild with new Valves and hardened seats done by a good shop can cost more than a set of Aluminum heads. Had I known them what I know now I would have opted for the TrickFlow 320s over the Edelbrock Performer RPMs but this particular engine was built to tow, not race. 3) Exhaust is super important, a good set of long tube headers and 2.5 - 3.0” minimum H pipe setup is the key to breathing. Over the stock exhaust manifolds, the gains feel like you added 4 more cylinders everywhere.
Mines a 91 f250 efi and honestly always been a crazy truck its been through the ringer and maintained the best i could but does have some body damage and a bit of rust but honestly tough trucks. I forget my transmission, thought it was a c6 auto but it has overdrive and is bullet proof, ive accidentally popped it in reverse at 80. Only thing that sucks is egr crap from the cat rusting out or dry rotting flex joints sputtering when you accelerate. Its in the worst place to reach but even when it was like that it still hauled
A buddy of mine had a built 460 in his 86 TBird drag car that ran low 10's consistently all day every day. My dad had a 460 in his 77 F150 and he hauled our race truck, and everything else he could throw at it and it just wouldn't quit. He got rid of it in 99 because gas prices went up.
Had a sky blue 74 T-Bird with a white interior and power everything and this motor. Would bury the speedometer and wanted to keep running...more pedal left!
What was the compression ratio for the F250's that were fuel injected in the late 80's-90's have? And were they roller? Did Ford up them just a bit like other manufacturers?
My 460 still operates great. '97 f350 4x4 reg cab 8ft bed. I have Fords biggest v8 and two of Fords smallest v8's. 4.6 2v '06 Crown Vic p71, and 4.6 2v in an '01 Bullitt Mustang(DHG)😊
Nobody seems to remember they were the motor of choice for many back in the jet boat days because you didn't need to upgrade all the internals like you did with the BBC.
From personal experience, yes even in stock form, it is a powerhouse and torque monster, but the downfall of them is they are very thirsty. Not a very good choice for a daily driver. At the best you get between 7 and 8 miles to the gallon, and that's driving it easy. I had one in a 73 LTD and me and the gas station attendants we're on first name basis.
What about Forge 534 truck motor that in the 60s a friend of mine put that in the Lincoln Continental and hopped it up and rated it Fremont dragstrip in California I own one of them took it out of the drill machine and the heads were worth $1500 apiece
HELP?? I just did a valve job on a 78 F350 460. It is running now and a friend looked at it and said I put the head gaskets in upside down. There are gasket tabs visible under exhaust manifolds. I saw a you tube and sure enough their install of gaskets show tabs on intake side. The question is do I have to take them back off?? It runs fine.
The 460 is all right for towing, but the FE is a better engine and can handle a lot of abuse. They are as heavy as a diesel. I weighed my FE and it makes 510 hp and 488 ft lbs and weighs 518 lbs with iron heads and aluminum intake.
I have 2 on stands in my garage now. Will eventually build a 540ci to put in fox body or older F100. You left out the fact the 460 can be stroked easily to 597 ci's.
Is the 330 and 361 Lima on the same block as the 370? I've seen them all in Ford F-500 and F-600 trucks. Also are all the internals heavy duty as well? I've got an 89 E-350 camper with a 460. Great video!!
did a 83 F100 with, what originally started out as a 300, then I put a mostly stock 460 in it....better but still kind of weak. Hurt that, rebuilt. Hurt that one (pistons) and did a 514. 4.300 stroke 4.390 bore. Ported heads. MUCH better, but should have just done a 4.500 stroke and 4.400 bore from the get-go. that old bullnose was a fun truck. Not that fast (tire spin....) but still fun.
You're right, the 1978 and 1979 Ford Bronco did not come with a 460 engine from the factory. During those model years, the Bronco was only offered with the 351M (5.8L) V8 and the 400 (6.6L) V8.
My Lincoln didn’t do too bad with a 2.74:1. gear in it. You were rarely on the secondaries around town and it turned less than 2000 on the freeway at cruise.
460 didn’t go into any trucks until the mid 70s, it was pretty much Lincoln only until 73 or so when the FEs disappeared and the 400s started taking their places in cars.
I have an 89 F 250 I bought 2years ago for short trip hauling for my construction company. I put a Banks intake and exhaust kit on it, really woke it up. Then a BBK throttle body and TSF injectors. Starts and runs much better with a slight power gain. Advancing the timing to 14 degrees made a very noticeabl difference too. This truck has a slide in dump bed and I pull a 15k dump trailer occasionally. Its been great. I'm planning on rebuilding it in a year or two and would appreciate any comments. To keep it emission compliant I have to stick with the stock efi set up, which means stock heads. I know there are shops out there that can port the stock heads. I can also put a mild towing hauling cam in it and increase compression. As far as I know that's all I can do with stock efi. If it can be stroked or anything else, I would appreciate comments.
i have a 96 F350 Dually Super Crew with a brand new rebuilt 460. it's bored .030 over. i have a 3 core all aluminum radiator in it and the engine only has 50 miles on it. it runs too hot. i dont know why. i changed the fan from a clutch fan to a dual electric and it still doesnt stop it from running too hot. i do wish i could figure it out. i love that truck and would like to drive it again. another thing, i have the original engine on the engine stand in the shop with 265,000 miles on it. it started to run warm and i assumed it was worn out so i built a new engine and put it in the truck just for it to run even warmer. i've measured the temp at 240F at the water outlet. if anyone has any ideas, im all ears. also. i pulled the heads to see if i installed one of the head gaskets backward... i didnt. they are both correct. in fact, you can literally see the word "front" on the gaskets at the front of the heads.
i bought my '88 F350 in October of 1987. 1 ton flat bed with 7.5 EFI and 5 speed manual transmission. years later, for some unknown reason, i was under the truck and saw the trans was a Mitzubishi with a label saying "do not repair this transmission. send it back for replacement". makes me wonder what kind of research they were doing because i would load over 2 tons of cement and sand on this truck every day to get my jobs done and never had an issue. it's still sitting here in my back yard. i'm waiting on my new plasma cutter to get here to chop it up. lol
I drove a 87 F- 350 short frame Tow- Truck. Last year naturally aspirated 5 speed manual Aluminum that had it's problems but not mine, luckily. Over 8 years in service 95% in city with lots of hills. Odomiter said I had driven 250 K miles. Owner wanted it tuned up his mech's Could Not Remove the distributer. 😢 They traded in for a 1997 SuperDuty Long body. A year later I quit. Ruined a perfectly great job because the Dream was gone.
When ford went to the V10 they went backwards. They could have easily improved the 460 to stomp a V10. Thank God they did that pretty much with the Godzilla
Used to drive a 96 F250 w/ 460… reliable and smooth. Mpg averaged 12… great truck engine, if gas prices hurt your budget don’t drive a truck.
If I could get 12 mpg I would be happy.
That's better than any of the modern gas powered 3/4 ton trucks I have currently.
I have twin 460s in my boat…scheduled upgrade from 340 hp to 750hp.38 ft boat
Glad I found this video, about to tear it out of our old motorhome before its sold for scrap, comes with a C6 transmission
I dropped a 460 in my crown vice swapped 56 f100 shop truck. Had to do a little bit of modification to the fire wall. Great video on the 460.
. Im currently in the process of purchasing an f350 dump truck and it has a 460 the information is helpful thanks definitely earned a subscriber.
The Ford 385 big block is the best American big block ever built in my book. Most popular? No. Best to own and modify? You bet.
Absolutely 💯 agree..
276,000 mi in a 96 f250 and still running strong
Building Cobra Kit; '69 429 stroked to 460; intake; Holley; Comp train; Edelbrock; etc.; T-10 out of a '62 Galx. finally wiring now. Goal -> summer '25.

Great video message thank you
Back in the day, I put a 460PI in my 76 high boy. That truck would run.
I have a 74 f250 with a 460. It’s a riot 💪🏻

The fastest vehicle I ever drove was Ford PU. And I had a couple cars was pretty fast, but that F100 !!
Love the info on these engines ❤
Good shit brother,,subbed instantly! See you at 100k!!!

Nobody seems to remember they were the motor of choice for many back in the jet boat days because you didn't need to upgrade all the internals like you did with the BBC.
So if you were to increase the compression ratio back to 10:1, would you get the 365 hp?

Sir, Can you please confirm that the 78 or 79 bronco came with the 460? I believe these years they were limited to the 400M.

The ford boat anchor 210 hp at 8 mpg how can an engine burn so much gas and no power
Not to mention that there's aluminum 632ci stroker blocks for this 460ci BBF.. So why would anyone not build one..lol
