      I like cleaning my guns it is very calming, i have over 60 guns mostly historical, Since i have so many i have to clean one to two guns a week for basic maintenance, and when i go to the range i bring at least 10 guns to shoot, i enjoy cleaning my guns its very relaxing. When its not relaxing is when i am cleaning one of my rare guns and im to worried about breaking a part thats very hard to replace.

    1:25 I have a beef with microfiber. I've cleaned windows with them several times and take note that they leave a significant number of "micro fibers" behind. I believe it's possible that the fibers could potentially decrease the tolerances between the metal pieces to such an extent that the operation of the hardware could be impacted. This could lead to a jam or misfire. I think lint-free cotton or similar products are the best to wipe down a weapon with.

    One thing that you could have mentioned is that when you clean the barrel you should only run the brush from the rear of the barrel to the front (the breech to the crown)

    • @67_PowerStroke
      @67_PowerStroke 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No, it does not matter as long as you don't change directions while the brush is in the barrel. A copper brush will not harm steel or chrome lining unless you bind the brush up inside the barrel. I run it in and out about 20 times real fast.

    • @DoctorQuackenbush
      @DoctorQuackenbush 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@67_PowerStroke The issue is potentially dinging the crown with the cleaning rod, not the direction of the brush movement. Yes, the soft brush will not hurt the steel barrel.

    • @NobodyOwesYouAnythin
      @NobodyOwesYouAnythin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. Plus, after running Any lube or oils down your barrel, unless you’re going to store your piece for a long amount of time, to run a dry patch down your barrel to remove any excess lubricant, as this could create over- pressurization during the first round fired, destroying the barrel, making for a very bad day. Never leave excess oils in any barrel if not storing the firearm. I’ve seen it happen at the range with a Glock 22. A Murphy Moment😖

    Excellent advice. Guns are meant to be used and they can run somewhat dirty. While there is a Zen to sitting alone, listening to your favorite tunes, and cleaning you tools after a good day at the range; they don't need to be spotless. The next time they go bang, they're dirty. Only time I dread cleaning is when I break out the old Mosin and used corrosive ammo. That's gotta be done soon after the range or the rust sets in. Other than that, yup, it's relaxing and very therapeutic. Thanks for you channel.

      Honestly, the AR-15 just shits where it eats anyways. It's a modern, smokeless powder firearm. That means that you really don't have to clean them but *maybe* every thousand rounds? Even then, I'd bet it keeps going well beyond that round count.
      Buy yourself a bolt scraper tool, an AR chamber brush, and chamber mops, as well as a nice cleaning rod like a Dewey, along with a .22 caliber bore brush, and brass jag. Disassemble, use a rag to wipe off all loose carbon with a bit of cleaner, apply your favorite bore solvent to the chamber brush & bore brush. Scrub both. About 5 or so passes on the bore usually does the trick in my experience. Run the chamber mop up in there, and clean the chamber/barrel extension area. Cut an old cloth T-shirt into small squares to act as a patch to apply to the brass jag, and push the patches from the chamber to the muzzle, removing each patch as it exits the bore on the muzzle end. Do not go the other direction. And take extra special care when re-entering the brass through the muzzle. You don't want to nick your crown. It's good practice to be careful when pulling the rod back through during that step. Repeat process until patches come out as clean as you like. Run a bit of your favorite lubricant onto a final patch, and send it through to coat the bore in a light oil.
      Add a little oil to the hammer face, the bolt carrier, the body of the bolt (I recommend never oiling a firing pin of any firearm), [if you want] a drop of oil on the gas rings...Maybe a bit on the cam pin... That's kind of all there is to it. The first mag you run through the thing will quickly make it appear as if though no cleaning had occurred. So, clean to your heart's content if you want. Personally, I clean mine very sparingly. It just doesn't *need it* that often. But, it is good to learn.

      I agree except for the Bolt Carrier Group (BCG). I totally disassemble my BCG and thoroughly clean it before lubing it and reassembly as it is the most prone to malfunction when not properly cleaned. It takes only about 10-15 minutes to disassemble, clean, and reassemble.
      edit: Please follow the links that I posted in this discussion thread. It will show you where the lube points are and how much you should lube it.

    Don't disagree with Colion's advice, but just keep in mind that each gun model has its own personality, and some ammo varieties generate more fouling than others. One gun might be flawless through 2000 rounds while another can't make it to 500 without some glitches coming into play.

      So how often should a gun be cleaned? After every shoot or a certain number of rounds?

    • @rohlfing63
      @rohlfing63 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ZabDevin Zab, there are many reasons that nobody can answer your question. Depends on how much you shot it, cleanliness of your ammo, weather conditions (wet, dusty?) and more. If I've only done light shooting I typically wipe the exterior down with a silicone cloth and run a bore snake thru the barrel a couple of times and call it good. If I get caught out in the rain or do heavy shooting, in a really dusty environment etc. I'll generally strip it down for a thorough cleaning and lubrication. Black powder guns get a thorough cleaning after each outing.

    • @matthewcaughey8898
      @matthewcaughey8898 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZabDevin in my case I carry in a pocket holster or IWB depending on the gun, a good pocket holster protects the gun pretty well but every few days I look for crud forming in the nooks and crannies. A simple Q-tip will be sufficient to dig out the deposits every few days, same for the barrel. I do a full breakdown once every 2 months on average. I clean out the old lubricant, I clean the junk that might have missed the occasional sweep, and I wipe it all down. After that I relube it then put it back together and wipe the excess oil off. I figure if I need it to work in a bad situation I had better take care of it. I breakdown my 2 carry guns once every 2 months in a rotating schedule. This way if a gun breaks I’ve still got a capable carry gun. But that’s my 2 cents YMMV

    Incredible how easy it is to distinguish those who've operated tools and equipment with their hands for years, as opposed to those who do not do so regularly. I can only use my experience of the simplicity in handling and maintaining any firearm as "second nature" whatever that excuse means.

    An empty gun is a liability in a self-defense situation, so people develop good habits of loading and racking...

    You should use a solvent for cleaning and a lubricant for lubricating. Lubricant is not designed to break down lead, carbon, and fouling. It's not much more effort to use the correct items.

    I kind of due the same thing, but I use ZMax as a final finish of lubing. Just dab it in with a cotton swab, after your normal lube routine. Pour the rest in your engine at regular oil changes. I did not get paid for this endorsement. When my old Ruger P90 changed its attitude with ZMax, I use it on all my firearms. Just my opinion. Thanks, Colion, for al you do.

    I like bore snakes; really speed up cleaning, especially long guns. I’m a traditionalist Hoppes mostly though I have multiple options depending on how dirty things are. I’m a departmental armorer and from time to time see some really dirty, occasionally really used guns, mostly from family members that look like they’ve never been cleaned. It doesn’t hurt to be prepared, that said you don’t need much lube/oil just a drop spread out on surfaces is typically enough or a spritz of dry lube spray, just remember with dry lube to let it dry before re-assembly.

    My concealed carry trainer suggested just handling my firearms for a half hour each evening. Get used to disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, and just holding the weapon while I’m doing other things to get really comfortable with it. He said most LEOs don’t actually handle their firearms more than about five minutes a day, usually just holstering and unholstering, loading rounds in the magazine and loading magazines in the firearm and loading spare mags in their tactical belts. He also said to have a heightened awareness of where my trigger finger is, to always keep it out of the trigger guard area. All that wonderful instruction and alas, all of my firearms and ammo went overboard on my last fishing trip. My poor dog, Max, drowned trying to rescue them for me. Damn, I miss that dog! Nowadays, I just hold my tumbler of whiskey. Should I get a new puppy?🐶

    Cleaner/lube products work well for most circumstances. However, in very cold situations, I find the lube can become a little thick and viscous; and in very dusty setting they can cause particles to adhere. When I anticipate being in those environments, I prefer to use a dry lubricant like teflon (ptfe) power instead on the slide rails and barrel. It does not thicken in cold nor cause particulates to adhere.

    I used to go crazy on cleaning my guns after every range session.. until my most reliable guns, my ppq, and my 226 had failure to fires! As a matter of fact most of my handguns did at the same time? Culprit: lube was creeping into firing pin hole and crud had built up on all my guns after thousands of rounds! Lesson learned... don’t forget to once in a while fully take the slide apart and clean the firing pin, etc! Cheers!
