Thank you for clarifying that without the remote start module installed in the _engine_ , no hardware based remote start will function. As others have indicated, the phone-based remote start is a completely different beast, relying instead on an adequate data connection for both the phone and the car. This is not necessarily a given everywhere in the US, and it has a yearly fee for the continued network capability. In the short run it's cheaper, but in the long run it can get pricey. I like the fact that the hardware option is available, and that in a pinch you can use the regular key fob (at reduced range). When I inquired about this with Subaru, they claimed that installing the remote access transmitter into the regular access key fob would compromise its range, and that's why they have kept it separate.
I have owned my 2015 Subaru 3.6 for 6 years. In no paperwork was it ever said to have remote start (certified preowned but bought from the original dealership that sold it new). I saw a pamphlet in the manual holder that mentioned a smart remote start on the fob. I decided for kicks I'd try this. Sure as crap it fired up. @Bill123321 my guess is they had it installed later, or it came with the car originally and no one ever documented it. You wouldn't even know it was there unless you tried it. Bad techs overlooking it. To be frank the dealership sold it to me certified but before I drove it off the lot I had to have them fix a lot of things. Cv axle was shot, and rear wiper didn't work. So a typical turn and burn sale.
The only thing I’m failing to understand is how the Subaru could have remote start capability with Starlink while not having a remote start module installed.
2 separate things. Remote start through Starlink with the MySubaru app is done through a telematics unit. Almost every Subaru that is made has this installed. Remote start with the key fob is through the remote start module, which most Subaru's DO NOT have installed from the factory.
Thanks for the info, my remote fob wasn't working, I changed the battery and it still did not work, I just started my outback from the kitchen using your method. WOW!!👍
i understand not everyone knows how to read or listen, so they're still salty that they dont have the remote start module in the first place. But my 2018 outback did come with the separate remote start fob and I had no idea I didn't "need" it .... this DID work for me, so THANK YOU and I'll be removing this extra BS "remote start dedicated fob" from my keyring now 😂😂
Nope, keyfob has no ability to roll down windows. Now, if you're inside the car & want to roll down windows without starting the car, don't put foot on the brake & push the start button twice. Put car in accessories mode.
Hi; quick question; My 2021 Crosstrec has the Starlink with remote start. Starlink is expiring. Do I need to buy a remote start fob to use this feature post startlink, or can i use my regular fob?
Is there a similar way I could use the regular remote on a 2012 Outback Limited? The remote start was dealer installed, but I don't have the remote, and the trick in the video above didn't work for me (different generation, I suppose). Thanks
That will be a hard question for me to answer, before my time. I started working for Subaru in 2018. The best advice I can give you is to consult with your local Subaru dealership to see if there are any options for you. You could also check to see if any third party companies might offer something for that model/year. No idea if anyone would.
If you have the app on your phone you can start it from inside the mall move restaurant and put the heat or AC on so its warm or cool? You'll also get an email or text that its started if you want so you don't have to guess? Also you can set a run time or turn it back off lock and unlock the doors
Why not? If I'm already on my computer in the office and it's 100 degrees, it would be great to turn the car on from the office and let the car cool off. Sometimes my phone isn't right at my side. Maybe someone prefers a dumb phone to a smart phone and would like to do this.
Hey there, thanks for the quick, to the point video. I have a question that always ends with a variation of "No, you need the push button to remote start - these two fobs are the same," when I ask them if my cars equipped for the non push to start fob. Does the 2023 Crosstrek SE with the 8in display, black wheels, approach lights, etc., come pre-built with a remote start Module and/or climate control with the starlink subscriptions in the mysub app? Or did the finance guy in need of solving a major mistake mislead me to get my problem solved quickly without a scene? Ha. The reason I even have it in my head is, I didn't originally purchase the SE, I was offered the SE because they sold my car to someone else, and they were really trying to settle the dispute. Finance brought it up, didn't even ask, but he said that it comes ready to go, just gotta buy the fob. In case the story is intriguing I'll try to keep it brief, there was a lot of funny business. But this, among many other reasons, is why I can't trust them: I pre-ordered dark Grey metallic, month later I get the call it's ready. I'm 5 mins from dealer and salesman called me to say he gave me the wrong Vin months ago. "Make sure you call your insurance and switch it to 'this' vin before you get here." so I do. Didn't think twice, I was so excited. I signed almost every paper until he drives down a base model in ice silver. I thought maybe I'm confused at first but I knew as soon as I got in the car. They either sold it or valet wrecked it. He tried to convince me I ordered the base ice silver while I'm signing papers for a premium dark grey lol.... Anyway, they needed to make it right asap and only had silvers and one SE, I think the SE was a fair tradeoff for the mistake, I wasn't going to wait another month. I'm also curious to your thoughts on this, ever seen this before? I figured he just covered for someone who sold my car.
It's worth mentioning that they forgot to enable my starlink services and I ended up having to bring the car in for a whole week while they enabled it, right after the purchase.
When it comes to remote start & the MySubaru app, your Crosstrek must have a push button start to be able to use that. Will not work with a turn key. Remote start options for a turn key would be to have the remote start installed by the service department that would allow you to be able to remote start the vehicle. You would get a little keyfob for starting the car with, like in my video. I don't ever see Subaru's coming in from the factory with the remote start modules installed on them anymore. We used to get some at my dealership from time-to-time, but haven't seen any since COVID started a few years back. I did a video where I gave my thoughts on remote starts, welcome to watch it if you want too. th-cam.com/video/naquOfSrom0/w-d-xo.html
wow, need to try this on my 2023 Subaru Wilderness. Does this have it too? I was trying to figure out which remote start was for my subaru and i see two types of remote starters on line. the in your hand and the one that looks like the key fob. is it this one or the little guy you say? Remote Engine Starter - Key Start Part Number: H001SSJ100 or H101SSJ000?
So, with older Subaru's that is how they were designed. Customers complained about it to Subaru & they did eventually change the way the remote start functioned to keep the car on when you opened the driver door. If you have one of the older models then that's how it was designed, & I'm not aware of anyway to change it.
Well, you must have a remote start module installed in the car to start it with the keyfob. App is working through the telematics unit, which will already be installed.
I do not have remote start "installed" in my Forester Wilderness but I paid for the Subaru Starlink app and using that I CAN remote start it from my phone. So,,,,,, you do *not* have to add any hardware to the car.
I have a 2019 WRX with push button start and because it has a manual transmission, remote start on my fob (just like the one in your video) will not work. My question then, does remote start have to be installed, activated or bypassed with another fob programmed to the car?
Hey Jason! Good info. I have a 2024 Outback Limited XT. Just bought it new. When I use Apple Car Play, I get limited keypad access that pops up. It wouldn’t be a big deal, but when I use Siri to call my parents I have to press 8 to confirm I am not a telemarketer. I only need to press one key, but can’t. Will this go away if I plug my phone in the USB port instead? If so are there any other settings on the display or phone I need to do. Thanks!
Try applying the parking brake when stopped. Sometimes, AppleCarplay keyboard access can be limited if it thinks you're driving. Under phone on CarPlay, you should have access to a keypad to hit that 8 you need to. Try plugging it in & see what happens. It can't hurt. I'm going to bed, if I happen to think of anything else, I'll add it later.
The older cars were designed to do that. Many Subaru owners complained about that over the years & Subaru did change it where newer models stay on. Unfortunately, with a 2015, yours is designed to do that.
Older models were designed to shut off when opening the door. After many complaints from Subaru owners they did change it where the car will continue running on the newer ones. If you have an older one then its designed to shut off when the door opens.
Trick from this video wouldn't work with regular keys, but you could still get a remote start installed. You'd get a separate fob for starting the car.
Because the app remote start & fob remote start are running through two different things. App is running through cars telematics unit (which most Subarus have installed from the factory). Fob runs through remote start module (which hardly any Subaru has installed from the factory), which needs to be installed.
@@JasonJarrettUSMC both starters use some of electronic signal. Subaru could make it work if they wanted. But they don’t want to so they can collect an exorbitant monthly charge or force you to install another remote starter. I’m a Subaru fan but this sucks.
My parents have 2014 forester premium. They paid to have a remote start put in, not by a subaru dealer though. They have fobs but the key fob for the car actually remote starts it too. My question is how do you tell if the car originally came with one, it's the premium submodel, do aftermarket starters allow this or is it possible they now have two remote starters on it.
One way to know if the car originally came with one would be to look on the window sticker that would have been on the vehicle when it was brand new, if you have it. The vehicle would have also came with keyfobs, like the one in my video, for remote starting it. If you want to provide the last 8 numbers of the VIN for the vehicle I could see if I can find any information on it. As for your question on aftermarket remote starts I cannot speak on them, as I really don't know anything about them. There is always the possibility the aftermarket remote start might work with the keyfobs, but I cannot say for sure.
pretty dumb that a 2024.model crosstrek premium with keykess fob has to have an additional fob and modeule to remote start (unless you use the app of course which is cool but not always handy say, if carrying groceries ir whatever and then having to screw with unlocking your phone, then unlocking the app etc. Seems like a simple setup in the keyless fob would have made much more sense.
Technically, if you install the module, you do not have to have that 2nd fob. The key fob can start the car once a remote start module is installed, no need to carry the other fob. As for the other stuff, voice your opinion to Subaru.
Make sure all of the other doors are locked, close your drivers door, take out the key from the key fob, insert it into the keyhole on the drivers door handle & turn it to the left (I believe) to lock the door. Can also try using the MySubaru app, if you have the Starlink Security Plus package, to see if you might be able to use it to remotely lock/unlock the doors.
My 2020 Forester was supposed to have a heated steering wheel. In reality it has a 2/3 heated steering wheel. I have a bad shoulder and my hands have been frostbitten, so I went with an upgraded trim to get a heated wheel, Is there any way to modify the existing wheel or am I stuck?
Unfortunately, you cannot change it. The heated steering wheel was engineered to function in that manner. They do it that way to make sure you hold the steering wheel at 10 & 2, like we are taught in drivers ed.
19 Outback was only fob. They didn't introduce remote start on the MySubaru app until the 2020 model Outback. Would still need to install that remote start module.
I can only speak for the OEM one. I'm provided no training for aftermarket ones & have no really ability to test this, unless we just happen to get a trade-in with an aftermarket one.
if I have starlink I can remotely start my car using the My Subaru app.. SO yes I do have the ability to remote start my car already installed in my Subaru Touring XT using the subaru app.. So why isnt it compatible using a key fob or a push button kind of remote start fob?
Because those remote starts use different things to function. Remote start through app uses telematics unit. Remote start through fob uses a remote start module, which hardly any Subaru's come with installed from factory. You would need to have that installed.
THANKS JASON for clarifying this. I just bought my first CAR 4 days ago ..a BEAUTIFUL BLUE 2024 FORESTER so learning 💙 LOTS & LOTS after owning my AWESOME CHEVY ASTRO VAN for almost 26 years who's still going like a SHE-BEAST @ 404,280 original miles 😂. @@pamfox1601 Glad you have the app set up, I meet so many people that don't do that. For remote starting with the app you have to a push button start, if your Forester is turn key it will not work. On the app, first start with "Climate Presets." You have to pick a climate preset before starting. Once you pick a preset it will walk you through starting the vehicle from there. Make sure you change your climate preset as the seasons change.
Do you have a remote start module installed in the car? That's the big key for this to work. Your local Subaru service department can help to get one installed if needed.
Wonder why mine wont work? Im a bit upset at my new 2023 ascent bc i didnt realize i would have to have good cell reception to use the mysubaru app and i have 0 cell service at my house 😢😢😢😢
This trick with the keyfob will not work unless you have had the remote start module installed into the car, it has nothing to do with the MySubaru app. You would need to visit the parts department to find out how much it would cost to purchase & then check with service to find out their cost on labor to install it. You could also check into getting a cell phone signal booster. I believe you can get those from Best Buy. I don't know if that would help you in your situation, but never hurts to check.
Remote start through the app is done by a telematics unit, which most Subaru's have installed from the factory. Remote start with the key fob is done through a remote start module, which most Subaru's do NOT have installed from the factory. Unless you've had the remote start module installed then this will not work.
The only way to start with the key fob is to install a remote start module into the vehicle. The remote start through the app runs through the telematics unit, which you car already has in it. Your local Subaru service department can help with installing the remote start module if that is something you might be interested in.
Well it's difficult to answer how for back that feature goes. If I remember correctly the Forester I used in the video was a 2018. So it will work from 2018 up to the current 2023's. I tried a Google search on it, but didn't find any good answers. I don't know what your situation is, if your looking to purchase a Forester or already have one & want to see if you can do this, but you can check the owners manual. If that feature is available it will talk about it in the manual. Next time I see my service manager I will see if he might have any idea how far the feature goes back.
I got my 22 Subaru forester wilderness preowned and it won’t remote start with the key fob. Does this mean I have to have remote start installed or is there a way to remote start without having to have anything installed or paying for starlink
For the trick I used in the video to work you must have a remote start module installed by your local Subaru service department. You can also remote start using the MySubaru app if you pay for the Starlink service. Nothing needs to be installed for that.
good day thanks for the answer, when I make changes in the settings according to your instructions, Fahrenheit changes to degrees only on the instrument panel, and on the large touch screen, Fahrenheit remains the same if you change the language as you indicated, unfortunately the menu has only English, Spanish and some Asian language I talked to Subaru drivers who have a car from Canada (or there is a Canada region in the settings), so as you say, they easily changed Fahrenheit to degrees and they had more languages, including Russian therefore, I am interested in the possibility of changing the region to Canada, especially since I am sure that such an opportunity exists ___if you know how to enter and enter the special service menu___ my confidence is based on an analogy with an android telephone in which all the regions and languages of the world are registered thanks in advance for the answer and the opportunity to help
Yes, if you purchased the vehicle at a Subaru dealer they can help you out. If you purchased it elsewhere you can go to www.mysubaru.com to register. BTW, only certain model years have the ability to remote start through the app & the vehicle must be a push button start.
THANK YOU AND HOW TO CHANGE FARENHEIGH TO DEGREES AND I AM STILL INTERESTED HOW TO CHANGE THE REGION TO CANADA IN THE SETTINGS BECAUSE THERE IS RUSSIAN LANGUAGE IN THE DENMARK SETTINGS OR HOW TO CHANGE THE LANGUAGE TO RUSSIAN THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR ANSWER
To change temperature units select "Settings" on the touchscreen. Make sure you're in the "General" tab. Scroll down the menu & look for "Temperature Units" then you can select Celsius or Fahrenheit. I don't believe there is anyway to change the region, but there should be a way to change languages. Let me get back to you on that one.
Just curious.....I can remote start my 2021 Forester with my phone. So then it should be possible with the remote, no? I mean the apparatus is there to remote with my phone. Please advise. And thanks for your vids!
See that's what I don't understand. How does it start remotely with the phone then?!? (And I don't mean to question your knowledge. It's just not making sense to me that it starts remotely, but only one way.) Thanks for your reply.
@@keithb9272 The remote start from the mobile app is running through the cars telematics unit, which just about every Subaru that rolls out of the factory already has installed. The remote start from the keyfob is running off a remote start module that hardly any Subaru coming out of the factory has installed. The only cars I see coming from the factory with one installed in it already is a car that a customer has custom ordered & added that option. This is why if you have the remote start via the app the remote start trick with the keyfob isn't going to work. I hope that clears up any confusion.
I checked an owner manual to confirm if its still available. Yes, you can do this IF you have a remote start module installed from the service department. You would also get the smaller fobs, which have a further ranger, but it would then work with the regular fobs as well.
We have a 2025 fully optioned 2025 Forester and it will not remote start with the key FOB. Stupid that a 41000 grand Forester does not remote start with the FOB. Subaru trying to suck owners into the paid Starlink monthly subscription. NFW
Love my Outback, but this is a super basic feature that' been on every other car for the last forty years, but doesn't come stock on a Subaru. It's like selling a car with wheels as an optional extra.
I'm 44 & I've never purchased a car with a remote start as a standard feature. I would suggest you voice your concern directly to Subaru. The only way things can change is if enough people complain.
Same here. My last 3 vehicles HAVE remote start on the fob. I dont want to PAY a fee to use an app on a phone to tell the car in my parents/friends driveway to start as i'm getting ready to leave. Most times I use the remote start is in a parking lot at work 40 ft from where i'm at, just fire my truck up and let it warm up a few minutes before I get off work. Simple reach in my pocket, press the button and done. I dont use remote start at home cause it's in a heated garage.. Just when i'm in a parking lot in the winter or at work. Grab phone, unlock phone, get to app, open app, wait to load, start vehicle. WAIT for vehicle to start... put phone away. Or..... press button on fob. Sorry, i rarely even use my phone for anything but calls/text anymore. 5 year old phone with no desire to upgrade until it dies. Using a phone to start my car is a huge step backwards. I guess if a subaru is all you've ever owned... or you are glued to your phone all day, i guess that works for you. Looking to buy a Wilderness and finding out the simple features i've had for ever.... need a subscription fee. Looking at Starlink, remote start the only thing i'd want... Just looked online, since 2000 almost every manufacturer has RS available or standard across their entire lineup. Some do require a sub, most do not. (Auto vehicles anyway, manuals never gets love) a $19k Nissan Versa is standard.... a $40k Outback requires a subscription lol. Not a deal breaker... but this would explain why the co-worker with the subaru always gets in his forrester to start it during winter, then clears the snow off his seat and the windows while I have half the snow melted before i get to my truck. The question is, can I get the $400 factory instal fob... and leave it at home and just use the keyfob like in the video?
@@JasonJarrettUSMC So just watched the video again.... are you talking the range? so you're saying the "trade off" is that it would be like EVERY OTHER CAR MANUFACTURER? My truck is like 50 ft, most vehicles with Key Fob start is 30-50ish ft. And you do know that in many states it's ILLEGAL to remote start a vehicle without a driver in vehicle... State I live in, it's legal in a driveway NOT in public, state i work in 20 miles away.... it is illegal if it's not in a driveway, and over 3 minutes in total i think. so the range is a non issue. anti-idling laws in a ton of states, some have time limits others do not... car running with no driver in it?... illegal in like 30 states now. being able to start my car from a a mile away is stupid, standing near it and starting it while i clean the snow off before i get in... all i need. www.motorbiscuit.com/remotely-starting-car-illegal-your-state/ list of somewhat current anti idle laws for example. Mostly aimed at commercial truck, but all include passenger vehicles. Check with your insurance, some will not cover anything it you had it running outside your driveway, theft of contents or actual car. And FYI, many cars can actually drive away with the key fob NOT in vehicle after remote start. turn car off and it wont start again until fob near though.. My mom found this out with her Kia. Remote started car from house, left keys in door of house when she dropped something... was close enough to car to unlock door and drive away, got to store... and realized what happened.
Not sure if this has been answered but if you install the remote start module will it automatically work with the cars key fob or does does the key fob need to be programmed for this to work?
No, I installed it myself on a '22 Forester and still needed to bring it in for it to be programmed. Cost about $120 after tax and fees at the dealership. Module alone was $280.
I am having dealers tell me this will only work on older versions and will not work on my 2023 Crosstrek Limited. I am willing to have a the module installed and sacrifice distance but they are telling me it won't work. Other people tell me it will. I wish I could get a straight answer. Seems to be stupid for Subaru to take a feature away.
It works on new ones, I did it the other day for a customer that had one installed. Look in the owners manual (thickest manual) on page 7-16 for information on remote start.
Thank you very much. One last questions. Is this the part number for the module I would need for a 2023 Crosstrek Limited? And could you please explain what the Superseeeion(s) means? @@r.gavinluck3738 I'm not at work today & cannot verify part numbers, but your local Subaru parts department can take car of that one. As for your other question: Supersession is when one part is replaced by a new part with a different part number.
he's already stated you MUST have an additional remote start installed. the stock keyless fob won't work ...therefore you have to carry 2 fobs and pay a lot of money for the install..pretty lame Subaru didn't just add it to the fobs that already have vehicles that can utilize the my Subaru app and remote start anyway.... I mean the app is a great feature but if your hands are full of stuff you're carrying to your car a simple quick three taps on your keyless fob to start the car would be much easier than whipping out your phone and unlocking it and then launching the app and having to unlock the app as well and then press a button on the app. kind of a huge fail by Subaru in my opinion
Majority of Subaru owners who pay for the remote start have no idea this exists. They are shown how to use the little fob for starting the car & that's it.

@@RadioRich100 what do you think a smartphone is? They’re primary remote start is an app. Not sure I understand the difference.
Hi I have a 2023 Outback touring xt and I have the remote key fob but it won’t start using the key fob! Not sure why?
But this, among many other reasons, is why I can't trust them:
I pre-ordered dark Grey metallic, month later I get the call it's ready.

How do you program a remote start fob on a 2018 legacy push to start?
any way to make the vehicle not shut off when you open the door, after key fob start ?
So, with older Subaru's that is how they were designed. Customers complained about it to Subaru & they did eventually change the way the remote start functioned to keep the car on when you opened the driver door. If you have one of the older models then that's how it was designed, & I'm not aware of anyway to change it.
It’s weird I can remote start with the “my Subaru app” but can’t with they key fob.
Well, you must have a remote start module installed in the car to start it with the keyfob. App is working through the telematics unit, which will already be installed.
It’s bad design.
I do not have remote start "installed" in my Forester Wilderness but I paid for the Subaru Starlink app and using that I CAN remote start it from my phone. So,,,,,, you do *not* have to add any hardware to the car.
Correct if you just plan to use the app for remote start. Fob would need hardware installed.
I'd rather install for using fob. Because I don't want to pay $100 every year to use the app, that's money gouging

Hey Jason!
Remote start is working from my keyfob from my 2015 OB but when I go to open the door the car shuts off, any way to stop this?
I’m wondering about this, too?!?
The older cars were designed to do that. Many Subaru owners complained about that over the years & Subaru did change it where newer models stay on. Unfortunately, with a 2015, yours is designed to do that.
Older models were designed to shut off when opening the door. After many complaints from Subaru owners they did change it where the car will continue running on the newer ones. If you have an older one then its designed to shut off when the door opens.

Hi thank you for the effort ,does 2017 outback premim wagon with 2 regular key has remote start?
Trick from this video wouldn't work with regular keys, but you could still get a remote start installed. You'd get a separate fob for starting the car.
Still doesn’t answer the question of why the remote starter that comes in the app can’t be reprogrammed to use a key fob to start.

There is always the possibility the aftermarket remote start might work with the keyfobs, but I cannot say for sure.
woah! I had no idea about this. Thank you.!!

pretty dumb that a 2024.model crosstrek premium with keykess fob has to have an additional fob and modeule to remote start (unless you use the app of course which is cool but not always handy say, if carrying groceries ir whatever and then having to screw with unlocking your phone, then unlocking the app etc. Seems like a simple setup in the keyless fob would have made much more sense.
Technically, if you install the module, you do not have to have that 2nd fob. The key fob can start the car once a remote start module is installed, no need to carry the other fob. As for the other stuff, voice your opinion to Subaru.

19 Outback was only fob. They didn't introduce remote start on the MySubaru app until the 2020 model Outback. Would still need to install that remote start module.
Does it have to be the subaru brand oem car starter or any kind like aftermarket ones?

Or you can buy STARLINK access and not only you can start and shut off your car but, also you can locate your vehicle wherever it is.
Not in Massachusetts, all the Subaru dealers in MA somehow decided not to enable STARLINK. Remote starters in the only option.
I'm not subscribing to an existing feature that's locked behind a paywall. That would be like paying a monthly fee for using reverse

Install a remote start module in the car, then you'll be able to.

This does not work on my 2021 outback. I can start my car on the app, but the fob trick does not work
Remote start through the app is done by a telematics unit, which most Subaru's have installed from the factory.
Remote start with the key fob is done through a remote start module, which most Subaru's do NOT have installed from the factory.
Unless you've had the remote start module installed then this will not work.
Mine has the remote start I use to use it with the app but the key fob isn't starting my car.
The only way to start with the key fob is to install a remote start module into the vehicle. The remote start through the app runs through the telematics unit, which you car already has in it. Your local Subaru service department can help with installing the remote start module if that is something you might be interested in.
From which year Forester should be able to do that?

@backlash2869 Yes, you could leave the little fob at home & start with key fob, but there is a sacrifice I mentioned in the video.
