Yes, I've always used the gas cap holder on our 2017 Outback. My personal opinion - I don't like the excessive cladding on the newer ones, even if it does protect against such things. Add in the GDI, auto stop/start, and the huge touchscreen, and I'm hoping our 2017 will last forever. 😊
Why would anyone read 650 pages of a 2024 Subaru Outback Wilderness owner's manual when they can watcth these great Subaru training and how to videos from Alex. Yes! even my Sales Person and Service Department at Heuberger Subaru in Colorado Springs recommended - highly recommended - watching all of Alex's videos to learan all the inside and outside features. Please never stop posting awesome videos, and 5 Thumbs Up.
My friend just got an Outback and she has been a bit frustrated by all the things that are on the car. She was super grateful I sent her the link to his his channel!
Erm. I can't understand why anyone would NOT read a manual on something that might cost half, two-thirds, or an entire-year's salary. Videos help, sure, but the number of people who flat-out don't even TRY To understand what to do (e.g. put oil in my car!) makes me never want to buy a used-car. Every single vehicle I've owned--once I get it home--gets a going-over of the entire manual, cover-to-cover, before I drive it meaningfully, and more people should consider that, since most folks in MY neighborhood are neck-deep in debt from their $80k Ford trucks that sit idle for their abysmal fuel economy, and such an investment warrants a TAD of proactive thought from the owner. :)
Proudly share: For years, I found microfibers on the exterior paint leave swirls in your clear coat over time ( especially black). I ordered a dozen all- cotton baby diapers 8 years ago, i always, use to wash and wax. No swirl scratches at all on my 2019 outback (white) since day one. Micros did scratch the touch screen lens. Use water, and a diaper. Your screen will be great. Use for wax removal, trash the diaper. (Washing machine troubles.) warning, not all diapers are cotton. Micro fibers are fine on trim and glass.
Amazed that there are people who don't realize there are holders for the gas cap still. Those have been around since the '90s, at least, and I have always used them.
Love my Outback but I found the Subaru all-weather mats to not be big enough and my feet still touched carpeting. Got some Weather Tecs and it’s one of the best purchases I’ve made for my car. They go further up the walls by the pedals, fit tight, and never move. For seat covers though I would go with Subaru brand. They fit perfect!
While cleaning my brand new Limited yesterday I noticed my Subaru all-weather mats do not protect the heaviest wear point, which is wear your gas peddle heal grinds into the carpet. This is probably a safety measure but I'm pretty sure this will be destroyed in 100K miles
My 2022 Outback came with WeatherTech, but my 2025 came with this Subaru version. I was actually kind of surprised, WeatherTech is the best you can get, so I'm not sure why they switched. I find these ones are a little floppy, and maybe there's a reason for that, but the harder WeatherTech ones are so easy to just pull out and dump without getting sand and grit and dirt on the carpet beneath it while you're trying to take it out.
I just filled up my gas tank for the 2nd time yesterday, and I was hoping my dangling gas cap thingy wasn't going to mess up my car! Thanks so much! Now I know! Thanks!! 👍
@@alexpmo Just looked up one of your videos about the front license plate bracket, & left a comment. I got a Forester, moving to MN where they require front and back. What is your best method for cleaning this fume grease. THANK YOU.... All these years I never thought of the relationship between high heat and plastic dash fumes
I have a 2k22 Forester and purchased 2 leather “side pockets”. I attached them (with includedVelcro strips). They are perfect for a handy place to stash my phone, hankies, and face masks.I also purchased an alternative fuse box cover that acts as a drawer to stash change from drive thru etc. Neither of these are from Subaru, but both were standard in my old 2006 VUE and I really missed them in my new car. 😳
Just got my first subaru in October. Apparently I haven't gotten gas outside of NJ yet, hope the attendants at the gas stations in NJ know about the gas cap holder 🤣
It’s POLLEN season and my Forester is collecting lots of pollen dust. Thanks for the info that I should NOT just wipe it off with my hand. I keep a microfiber cloth in the vehicle all the time.
Alex, thanks for all your informative videos! I would like to add to this topic. It is important to avoid using ammonia-based glass cleaners like Windex on automotive glass. They can damage the coatings used on that glass. Instead choose on of the many automotive glass cleaners like Invisible Glass. Overspray on the paint from ammonia cleaners isn't particularly good there either.
While I like the all-weather floor mats (even though they are flimsier than the ones in my 2014 Outback), I wish they had more coverage on the front driver’s side, right near the accelerator pedal. That spot gets filthy and the floor covering wears down very quickly there. I am sure it’s a safety thing, but still wish there was better coverage in that area. Speaking of floor covering… I find it very difficult to keep that clean. It’s as if it traps dirt and grass fibers and you have to vacuum it vigorously to get it to release its hold on whatever’s there. And forget about sand. But if you’re using your Subaru for hiking/fishing/biking/camping, it’s gonna get dirty inside anyway, so never mind 😉.
I use a duster like Swiffer for the inside (keep it low next to my seat). Now I'll use it outside. I think that would be even more gentle than a microfiber cloth.
The gas cap holder should always be used because if the inside part of the cap gets too dirty your dashboard will light up with multiple warnings. I took my Subaru in thinking it was in trouble but all the mechanic did was clean the gas cap and reset the warning lights! Save yourself a trip to the shop and money by using the holder. It's a good idea to wipe the white part of the cap every once in a while to avoid this problem.
Hey Alex! Great videos! I really enjoy your content! I do have a question about tires. I have a 2018 Subaru Impreza and I need new tires due to a bad alignment and cupping in the tires. Would it be ok to get 2 new tires on the front or should I get 4 new tires all around? I've heard getting 2 new tires only can cause issues for the AWD system.
I swap in the carpet from April through October, basically flip flop season. I'd rather feel the carpet than the rubber under my heel, but I do double up in all positions other than the drivers seat to save trunk space. When I don't tint the moonroof, I will mount my transponder there, makes it out of sight, and out of mind.... which as someone who leases and hasn't finished a lease term in the last few vehicles... typically leads to a text to my sales person... hey, I did it again can you grab my ezpass and the air freshener I forgot... But currently, have the transponder mounted to the right of the flush mount shroud, and a dash cam just below and haven't had any issues thankfully. Really wish Subaru would give us an SD Card slot to use the Eyesight cameras as a dash cam.
I use water or alcohol on the rare occasion I need to clean the screen more. Most times I just wipe with the microfiber cloth but there are rare times I need something a bit stronger. Alcohol is perfectly safe for these screens. Also, until Subaru makes an in-car video recording device where we can actually access and download the footage ourselves, I will always use my own and yes, it sits below the mirror. Mine is a Garmin. I have needed this many times over the years as proof, suggested by my son, a State Trooper. I don’t know why we cannot access something we paid a lot of money for!
Alex, I just joined the Subaru family of auto owners with a ‘24 Outback Limited. So far I’ve had the car 1 week and love this vehicle. Your videos have played a significant role in helping me become familiar with the in/outs of my Outback. Keep producing relevant and good content.
Thanks for the tips. I might add that #2 with the gas cap holder is also helpful for keeping the cap from picking up dirt from your car while hanging and putting that dirt into the fuel tank when you put the cap back on.
Use WeatherTech Floor Liners, always put the gas cap in the bracket on the gas door. I've used a Guardsman Furniture Dusting cloth to keep the interior dust-free for decades. The transponder is out of the way of the Eyesight cameras. Eyesight (on my 2015 Forester) bails when I technically need it most (rain, snow, setting sun)...
E V E R Y S I N G L E TIME when you need it most. Pretty useless in a lot of cases especially if you live somewhere where blizzards and fog are common.
I was driving Pontiac Vibes before my Subaru Forester. They both (2003 and 2010) had a holder for the gas cap while filling. So, when I got my Forester, I knew what it was and just thought it was a universal smart thing! LOL!
I have always been using the gas cap holder. I definitely do not want any scratches or residue, even though the plastic cladding can provide some protection.
I just installed the NYS EZPass plastic transponder below the EyeSight cameras on my 2024 Outback XT Limited, and the car hasn't complained about any obstructions. The housing around those lenses should prevent anyone from obstructing the view of the camera.
Get the factory all weather floor mats. They are well worth it. I also have the cloth ones in the original plastic bags. The same with my 1999 Volvo XC-70. Always get your oil changed on time and check the oil level before you drive away. Even good mechanics can make a mistake. Don't drive your car like a race car, even if you have turbo. Race cars are rebuilt between every race. Unless you want drive train rebuild many years sooner, don't race it. I get 31.5 - 32 mpg actual measured mileage by driving efficiently and my brakes with an automatic transmission last 10-15+ years. It saves you lots of $$$.
Awesome videos! Just wondering you mentioned that anything mounted on the windshield can interfere with the eyesight system. What would you suggest for mounting a dashcam so that it doesn’t interfere with eyesight, especially on the new system with the third camera?
Hi I just purchased my 2nd Subaru , a 2024 Outback.😊 why am I not able to fill the tank to full on the new model. My previous album was a 2017 and I was able to put 18 gallons in the tank. My 2024 will only let me fill it up to 16 gallons.
My E-ZPass transponder is in the sunglass case lol. Best place for it unless of course you put sunglasses in there. I wear glasses anyway so I always get the, I can't remember what the name of it is, but the ones that turn into sunglasses. It's a really handy spot for your E-ZPass transponder
Yes I use the gas tank holder and I use water and vinegar to clean the interior and windows never had a issue and natural and will not harm you to inhale
I've found the best way to clean the interior windows is to dampen a clean microfiber cloth and run that over the window surface followed immediately by a clean DRY microfiber cloth. Nothing else has cleaned my windows better!! And you don't risk overspray of harsh chemicals over the sensitive areas of the interior.
I would recommend an eye glass cleaner on the touch screen and a nice lens cleaning cloth. Anybody that wears glasses probably already has several of those cloths and the spray cleaner.
Hi Alex, thanks for your video’s. I did know about the fuel cap holder, I’ve used mine on every vehicle I have owned that had one. I’ve had my WRX since March 2018, it doesn’t have Apple CarPlay so I use a Tom Tom for navigation. I have it in the lower right corner of the screen (in Australia, right hand drive). This is an excellent spot as it doesn’t interfere with EyeSight cameras or obscure the view of the driver. For the dust on my dark grey WRX I use a handheld duster mop that is lightly impregnated with some form of oil. Just a light wipe over brings the dust off without scratching. Regards Les
A dry microfiber rag WILL scratch any plastic surface like the infotainment screen. They’ll be tiny scratches but over time they will accumulate. You’re far better off using a wet wipe designed for displays like computer monitors. They won’t scratch & will actually remove oils left by your fingers.
Since picking up my new 2024 Outback Limited last month I've become intensely picky about how while fueling I always get those last 4-5 drops of gasoline dripping off the end of the nozzle. This always drips onto my beautiful new finish
It really just depends on where you mount things. Though sometimes where you want something mounted, isn't necessarily a place where the car likes it mounted. While we're on the subject of eyesight features, I love my Subaru, please don't get me wrong, and I don't regret switching from Nissan to Subaru but I miss the Forward-Facing camera so much. Subaru needs to get a forward-facing camera, stat
Hi Alex, I love your videos! Just last week I picked up a brand new 2024 Crosstrek Limited. I love it! Keep the videos coming and hi from Ontario Canada
Yep. My carpet mats are still in their packaging. In fact, I still have the ones from my previous Subaru (I forgot to put them in my old Subie when I traded it in.)
Thanks I did not know about gas cap holder. 2017 outback always let it hang never told either. I'll give you a piece of info. I got from Honda review. He put a bike rack on the back and he put it in reverse it locked up the reverse emergency brake. You must turn off everytime you get in car.
Uck, I always learn something new when I watch your videos. Which is a little disturbing, to think how little I apparently know about my car! Gradually, gradually.
Always informative!! 😊 I did find the gas cap holder the first time I got gas.. My car is pre owned so it did have the all weather mats, which I replaced with a full set of Max liners and a mat for the back..
Alex - Thank you for these helpful Subaru tips! Too bad that the quality of paint jobs on most modern motor vehicles are so fragile in comparison to years ago. (A mere finger, or hand, brushed across dust on the car's exterior paint should not easily mar the appearance of the vehicle that is constructed to be traveling in varying climates, weather, etc.) Hopefully, industry quality and higher product standards will one day replace the "design obsolescence" and easily discarded-mentality. Happy Travels! 🇺🇸 🚘🛣
Could you do a video on Android Auto (or if you already have, post a link)? I use my phone because it's about 50/50 getting Android Auto to work in my Outback. I have to plug in the USB because it won't connect otherwise, and I have to do that before I start the car. Is it me or the system?
This is from a Canadian viewer. Love your content and my 10 year old Forester. Now looking at a 2024 Crosstrek @ $36,674 CDN before delivery etc. What percentage discount should I be looking for on this car? Your advice is appreciated. John
Hi Alex, great Subaru content. Thanks. I have a question regarding my XV 2019 sport, it came with LPG and Gasoline and I wanna know if it switches automatically from that to this or how that works exactly? Does it run on the LPG and when it empties it witches to gasoline? Thank you and keep up the good work
I have a 2023 Forester. Where do you recommend I put my phone when it’s plugged in for Apple CarPlay usage? The little pocket in front of gear knob is worthless as everything flies out of it.
Hey Alex new to your channel and find some very useful information. I just purchased a 2019 Forester and love it. Do you have any video that would walk me through some of these things? Like Apple Play maybe. Thanks.
Alex, can you make a video about the features of 2022 Crosstrek? I was reading the books of manuals (which are very intimidating, if you ask me) and would encounter a feature, followed by "(if equipped)". How would I know if my car has BSD, HBA, SRH, RAB, etc.? Thanks for your help!!
Thank you for another great video. I also have an Onyx Edition, 2024. Do you still have a doughnut spare or have you swapped it out for a full-size spare?
Hi Alex! I love your videos and they’ve really helped me navigate my 2024 Crosstrek!! Question…is it possible to unlock all the doors when I grab the driver or passenger handle, or unlock from the key fob?
Hi Alex, thanks for the tips (again), always like it and very useful. Greetings from Subaru Forester owner in Indonesia. I noticed the color of your outback is white. Assuming it’s the same white color of Subaru Forester 2023. I’m wondering if you experienced yellow-ish white color for the bumper? compared to the body which seems whiter. Maybe you can share experience or give advice related to maintaining white color for Subaru. Thanks!
1st time I fueled up I noticed the gas cap holder. I had at least 1 other vehicle with that feature so I even looked for it. 2023 Subaru Outback Premier Xt (Canadian model).
Alex, I live in the desert where we experience triple digits throughout the summer months. I own a 2023 Subaru Solterra. Is it advisable to have the windshield tinted to minimize damage to the interior and reduce the temperature? Or can you recommend a sun shade that would fit my model, offer complete protection, and reduce temperatures significantly?
I am enjoying all your videos. I subscribed. Question, what about a dash cam in the front window? It has to be mounted near the center. Will it be ok below the rear view mirror mount? Thank you
FYI 2021 outback limited dealer updated the GPS system and now the heated seat display works as a touch on screen permanently. No longer have to go into the total touchscreen
Alex, I just ordered a mod that allows a short 6" USB connection to my small dash cam. This will allow me to mount the dashcam directly below the rearview mirror post. How will I be absolutely certain that it's not affecting the Eyesight system. The Dongle mfg site claims it is safe
Some transponders (like my EZ-Pass) will provide a unit that bolts to the front license plate frame - totally out of the cameras' sight. I recommend this over the transponders that afix to the inside of your windshield.
I have a similar TexTag transponder for my new Crosstrek that bolts to the front license plate. When you get that transponder, they give you a special set of screws that are difficult to remove and a corresponding screwdriver to install them.
Bought my first Subaru, a 2024 Crosstrek and did some car camping not realizing leaving the back open would drain the battery. Is there a way to leave it open? Also, at times m iPhone will not connect.
Alex: love your videos! Question: We recently ran our battery down accidentally (2022 Outback) and had to get a "jump". Used the hidden key in the fob to open the doors and then the hood. When we first attached the jumper cables to the battery the horn started honking. What causes that?
Morning, my wife and I just got a 2025 outback, We decided to upgrade from our 2000 outback. we live in a cold area, can I put a trickle charger on this new car without messing up all the electronics
Speaking of gas caps, after returning home from a long trip , the next morning the dash had a Christmas tree of warning lights on including "Check Engine". It turned out that I didn't screw back the gas cap fully correctly.
Just found out #2 existed on my Subaru 😅 Did you know this was a thing?
Yes I did
Third Subaru, yes! Always used it. Distilled water on the touch screen, just like on my TV.

It saves you lots of $$$.
lol you pay to play... or you can granny drive it like a boring commoner
Check my oil level before I drive away! I never thought of that. Don't they take affront at you doing that?
Always appreciate your informative ideos I always learn something about my outback Thanks, Alex
I have a ‘22 Accent and a ‘18 Outback. Thank you for the hints and tricks…
My 2022 Forester has only a 16 gallon tank
My E-ZPass transponder is in the sunglass case lol. Best place for it unless of course you put sunglasses in there. I wear glasses anyway so I always get the, I can't remember what the name of it is, but the ones that turn into sunglasses. It's a really handy spot for your E-ZPass transponder
I always use the cap holder on my 24 crosstrek
Love the vids, man. I recently bought a subaru for my wife. Liked it so much I bought myself one!
Good advice/video Alex, thanks! Love my Subaru!!
Perfect Glass is okay for touch screens. Just spray the cleaning cloth not the touch screen.
hadn't heard of it. Thanks!
OMG I did not know that there was a gas cap holder; I looked for one, but didn’t realize that’s what that cup was for. Thanks a bunch Alex!
I tinted my front side window at 50% and done my front window wish there was a way I could put a picture of it on here looks real good
Gas cap holder on the fill door has been around for many years. Never use Windex on anything on a vehicle.
I would say for detail spray.. you want to spray directly on the surface to incapsulate the dirt.
Yes I use the gas tank holder and I use water and vinegar to clean the interior and windows never had a issue and natural and will not harm you to inhale
Had my new 2025 outback ceramic coated, not cheap to have done, but I feel worth it
I've found the best way to clean the interior windows is to dampen a clean microfiber cloth and run that over the window surface followed immediately by a clean DRY microfiber cloth.
Regards Les
I'm glad you showed the gas cap holder. I didn't realize it was there. Thank you!
I knew about gas cap , have dashcam mounted underneath Subaru cameras. Never had a problem.
Thank you!
Yep. My carpet mats are still in their packaging. In fact, I still have the ones from my previous Subaru (I forgot to put them in my old Subie when I traded it in.)
I knew about the gas holder and have been using it for many years 👍🏻
Thanks I did not know about gas cap holder.
I did find the gas cap holder the first time I got gas..
(A mere finger, or hand, brushed across dust on the car's exterior paint should not easily mar the appearance of the vehicle that is constructed to be traveling in varying climates, weather, etc.)
Hopefully, industry quality and higher product standards will one day replace the "design obsolescence" and easily discarded-mentality.
Happy Travels!
🇺🇸 🚘🛣
I had no idea about that gas cap holder on my Impreza, now I do. Thank you!
I have the same problem with my 2021 Forester. My phone's too large to fit in the cubby
I bought a holder from ProClip USA.
I installed a BlackVue dash camera right behind the rear view on my 24 Forester Premium and I have no issues with eyesight.
I bought a screen protector for mine screen it was about 20 bucks well worth it
WeatherTech is excellent at keeping your floor mats very well protected!
I agree! Luckily the Subaru all-weather liners have been updated within the last 5 years to keep floors protected like the weather tech
@@alexpmo I have a 22 Wilderness and 24 Crosstrek...both came with the flimsy all weather mats. WeatherTech installed in both!
Always informative. Thank you Alex
At my first gas fill-up of the 2024 Crosstrek I saw the cap holder and thought it was useful. Our old Outback had a holder but not a useful holder.
Hi Alex! I love your videos and they’ve really helped me navigate my 2024 Crosstrek!!
Question…is it possible to unlock all the doors when I grab the driver or passenger handle, or unlock from the key fob?
Yes it's in the settings. I unlock all 4 at once with handle. Never take fob out of pocket. Also lock with handle.
Yes, I knew I had the cap holder… was a little inconvenient, though… especially if it’s raining/snowing (like blizzard-like), and I’m pumping outside
Thank you
Keeping paint waxed to protect it. Father in law used windex on Mercedes-benz S Class. After I waxed twice, I threw out all non wax cleaners
Subaru mats are too skimpy. Had to get floorliners elsewhere. Thanks, good video.
I started using the gas cap holder since I had an Odyssey. Like you I use the all weather mats. My carpet mats are still in the plastic.
I use a California Car Duster for my screens and dash. Works great.
In the summer I use my carpet liners on the floorboards and in the winter I use the plastic or rubber ones
FYI 2021 outback limited dealer updated the GPS system and now the heated seat display works as a touch on screen permanently. No longer have to go into the total touchscreen
Hmmm - wonder where to mount Radar detector and dash cam so to to interfere with Eyesight - any advice? Really like the content Alex!
I have used the gas cap holder from the beginning. Great feature.
Doesn't it get stolen? (I live close to a high crime city)
I have an android and have the same issue. Sometimes it also disconnects when I hit a bump.
Alex: love your videos! Question: We recently ran our battery down accidentally (2022 Outback) and had to get a "jump". Used the hidden key in the fob to open the doors and then the hood. When we first attached the jumper cables to the battery the horn started honking. What causes that?
I let my 2019 Outback warm up for at least a minute. Is this a good practice?
Morning, my wife and I just got a 2025 outback, We decided to upgrade from our 2000 outback. we live in a cold area, can I put a trickle charger on this new car without messing up all the electronics
Hello Alex. I have a 2022 Crosstrek and I’m curious on what you think about using a non ethanol gas. Thank you, Mark
Speaking of gas caps, after returning home from a long trip , the next morning the dash had a Christmas tree of warning lights on including "Check Engine". It turned out that I didn't screw back the gas cap fully correctly.
Thanks Alex, didn't know about #2, will look for it💡!
