    Alex, I own 3 Subarus. And every time I turn on your videos, I learn something new about my Subarus. Functions that I had no idea. My oldest car is a 2018. It is just a base hatchback Impreza. It was my first experience with Subaru. What I learned from buying this. At, is to stay away from the base model. I despise those steel wheels and hubcaps. I now gave 69,000 miles on that car. I have lost now 12 hubcaps. I just replaced the tires and I purchased new aftermarket wheels. I replaced the tires with the exact same tires that came on the car new. What I find, is maintenance on this car is very expensive. The car is cheap to buy new. But the upkeep is costly. Just to replace the spark plugs is 800 bucks. That’s ridiculous.

    • @alexpmo
      @alexpmo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey James! Thanks for watching, and glad that I could help you learn something new. I've had the same issue with hubcaps in the past. We used to zip tie ours to keep them on 😄 I was going to suggest getting either an oem or aftermarket alloy wheel instead, but you're way ahead of me! Hope your experience is better now

    Your videos are super helpful. It helped me choose a Subaru Outback for purchase. Unfortunately, I hit a moose 3 days after purchasing it. Usually hitting a moose (yes, Im in Canada) with a car is a death sentence. My dog Teddy and I had a few scratches and bruises. We were surrounded by air bags that kept us safe. It would make a great safety advertisement for Subaru. Except the poor Moose didnt make. Luckily a nearby dealership had one in stock and I will be getting it today. Keep up the good work.

      There are NJ legislators currently trying to make subscriptions for vehicle functions that do not require any servicing illegal. Their thinking is if this is not a service that will require updates then why are they charging subscriptions. Seems a lot of manufacturers are doing subscriptions now.

      @@SageLakshmi I went with the key fob considering the subscription is $99-149. I figured I'm keeping this vehicle for a long time and would rather not have to pay each year for services I will rarely use other than the actual remote start. I also liked the ability of having the small remote start key fob separate from an app. In my opinion it was worth the $600+ for a one time fee and 2 separate key fobs provided by my dealership.

    Alex does a great job presenting the information and demonstrating the steps to whatever he discusses. The issue I had with the app was the fact that I could not use it for three weeks. Why? Subaru could not verify the owner. The computer-based part had the car correct. The app said that the car could not be found. I called and canceled. Subaru was like, why? We can fix this. I am like, you had three weeks! No one could fix the issue. They even escalated the case to the highest-level tech. They could not fix the problem. Yeah. Technology is nice when it works.

    We live in North Central WA state. The average temperatures at night in the winter is 5-15 degrees. We park our Outback in the garage and it never gets below 40 degrees.
    My wife is a RN and leaves for work at 6am.
    While she is getting ready to go to work, she remotely starts our Outback so it’s toasty warm when she leaves.
    She has to engage X mode to get to and from our garage, as we live on a private road and we have to plow it ourselves.
    Our 19 Outback has never let us down.
    Her 08 Outback had 450K miles on it when we bought our current Outback.

    Alex- It is important to note that Starlink services are NOT available to Massachusetts residents on any model year 2022+ Subaru. The reason it is not available is because Subaru intentionally disabled it to comply with the state’s updated right-to-repair law. This law - which was a voter ballot initiative (not the legislature) -- requires auto makers to use an open-standard for telematics data so that independent mechanics can have access to it. Instead of changing the Starlink system, Subaru chose to simply disable it. This means no remote start, no crash notification, and none of the other services associated with it. This law also means dealer mechanics do not have access to telematics data - Subaru decided nobody can have access to it instead of letting everybody have access to it. The other auto makers, to my knowledge, have not disabled their systems and are complying with the open standard requirement.

    • @alexpmo

      @@alexpmo I figured it was a good FYI for you. I am a MA resident, but thankfully I will be taking delivery on a MY21 Crosstrek this month so it's not an issue for me. It specifically applies to MY22 vehicles. There have been some articles about this on automotive news sites, but is otherwise not well publicized. There is an ongoing lawsuit by an automaker trade group over the telematics rule, so this could change, but for the time being the directive by Subaru of New England is to not activate the system for MA residents on MY22 cars. (It does not effect out-of-state residents who buy in MA, only owners who live in MA).

      @tekgamer33 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joeychiarenza5456 I am not aware of any third party solution for this. Ironically if Subaru had chosen to adopt an open standard, which was the point of the law, then a third party could access the telematics data. Instead Subaru took the “nobody can have it” approach by disabling the feature altogether. Even the dealer service techs are not be able to access this data. Hopefully when the lawsuit is decided there will be a positive change.

Just FYI getting a preowned (I purchased a 2021 Subaru Outback Limited XT this past November) and getting through the Subaru National Customer Support to change the owner etc. Is a very long wait and process. I’ve been trying since November and have sat on hold for hours and have emailed and they are “experiencing long wait times” is the only response so far as well as “please be patient”. So just FYI when you’re buying a preowned be prepared to wait.

    New Subaru owner and I HATE this style of remote start. Would much prefer it built in to the standard key fob (like other major car brands). The app process is annoying and slow, and the alternative of carrying around an additional fob for an after market remote start install is just as annoying.
    Oh yeah... and you have to pay a subscription to get what other car manufacturers have it built in for free (with the fob).
    Yes... for the guy who was able to remote start his car from cali to keep his car battery charged in Chicagos winter... yes, this app makes sense. Other than that very obscure reason, I HATE that suabaru went this way and shame on me for not reading more into what the remote start process was before buying.

      This is my #1 gripe about my Subaru. Every car I’ve owned in the last 20 years has allowed me to remotely start it with the key fob. 99.99% of the time that I want to remote start the car, it’s sitting in the driveway and I want it to warm up in the winter or cool off in the summer; I’m not halfway around the world. And if I’m in an area with poor or no cell coverage, the app is useless. Requiring the app to remote start the car just feels like a manufacturer being greedy because they can be.

I am looking at a '23' crosstreck limited and I was wondering if either/or the regular head lights or the DRL's. automatically come on when the remote start is activated or can they be kept off till in drive. I leave early (3am) for work and my car sits outside overnight so to warm up the car I don't want to be lighting up my neighbor's bedroom also how long will the car idle? does it shut itself off after a period of time? thank you

    • @Robert-uq5ew
      @Robert-uq5ew ปีที่แล้ว

      I use the long distance one when I come out of the grocery store or at the mall or somewhere where I'm parked far away. By the time I get there it's cooled off a little bit.

    Hi Alex, wish you had been my salesperson! When I bought my 2021 Forrester he just gave me prices for the first 3 years and said their prices went really high after that. He didn't say anything about it being even higher after that to extend the service. So I just purchased the 3 year to see if I liked it and would purchase the next years later. Is there anyway to extend my 3 year now to the full 7, it has been 8 months since my purchase? I love your series, because my salesperson sure didn't explain half the stuff you have!

      You're welcome! The Forester and the Outback are the two that are most commonly compared. I'd suggest test driving each to see which feels better to you. They both have the same ground clearance but the Forester has a higher seating position
      (like a traditional suv) and the Outback has a lower seating position (more comparable to a sedan like the Legacy). Hope this helps!

    Hey Alex, I came across your videos about a week ago and have pretty much binge watched them. Very informative. My wife and I have a 2020 Subaru Ascent and use the auto start all the time, love it. I have a question have you ever tried to tow anything with an Ascent, we have a premium that is rated for 5k pounds and are thinking of getting a small travel trailer to do a road trip with. Anything that we should know? Thank you!!

    • @alexpmo
      @alexpmo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for watching Eddie! I haven't personally towed anything with the Ascent but I do know that it's capable. There are a few videos on here of people towing small campers and airstreams behind the ascent with ease. They come standard with trailer stability control and the transmission/ trailer brake is already set up for towing so you shouldn't have to do anything. The one thing I would say is that the tow hitch does not come standard so you will have to get that installed if you haven't done so already. Let me know if you have any other questions!

How long will the car run if I remote lock the doors with the car running and key inside?
