I've been battling with mental health for years yet the professionals I've encountered are still working off of the old model of treating symptoms instead of inquiring about the life of the patient holistically. Gabor Mate was alluding to this with the body-mind is tied together along with the persons environment and whole life.

I agree, Gabor Mate and many others have really highlighted the importance of seeing the person as a whole. One of the best writers on trauma, in my opinion, is Bessel van der Kolk. If you haven't already, you might want to see his The Body Keeps The Score where he goes deep into all of this stuff. Thanks for your comment.

They treat the symptoms because only the individual can resolve their own trauma .
Professionals can help individuals see and target what the psychological issue is but only the individual can fix it . Medications will assist in settling the nervous system down a bit so one can do the work themselves if one has no idea on what’s ok and what’s not then they can’t fix it . If one grows up in a family that abuses each other using the old human life model then the key here is to go to a therapist to learn what the new model of 2023 psychology and behaviours are acceptable. It’s but mere about asking the specialist right questions .

Minnesota is the 23rd state in the nation to legalize cannabis use for people 21 and older. Learn more about the legislation. On May 30, Gov. Tim Walz signed an expansive cannabis legalization bill into law, allowing the recreational use of cannabis for adults 21 and older starting Aug. 1.2023

I very much hope you and your audience were tracking the very clear and strong articulation of the political economy or trauma, stress, negative health factors....he names Captialism. He names the "elegant" system of creating a need then exploiting that need...

A very thought provoking moment. Thanks for your input. Do you assume malevolence? But even asking that question may appear quite leading.

Everyone is "gaslit" to think it is "capitalism" it is not. We don't have true capitalism. We have corrupt, thieves running the show, changing laws, and "the science" to rationalize everything to "extract" from fellow humans causing decay. Vs natural free markets that elevate people. The second part is near the root... the financial system underpins it all - it as caused so much damage in the world, for 100's and 100's of years. The very root, is the fact so many are asleep and just handed all their power over.

@@theemilbarna malevolence on whose part? I'm not sure I understand your question. I do very much appreciate Gabor's work but know that like so many others who challenge our systems and many of the received truths about them, media filter out his quite cogent critiques of capitalism out I'm favor of "interpretations" that point to trauma as an individualized problem that only had individualized resolutions.

@@df3575 Hey! Looking back, I believe I didn't see the capitalist implications you were referring to, but perhaps that is just my ignorance on his wider corpus of writing. As a therapist, I would have to question that capitalist societies are those that are more traumatised, if that's what you're saying. If it's not, do correct me. Trauma rears its ugly head in circumstances where humans are pushed beyond their breaking point AND are not supported or acknowledged through it after the fact. What are your thoughts on this?

The core ideas here might be useful but there is a LOT of misconceptions and myths about how primitive/semi primitive people do it "better". If we agree to this notion, we must drop the whole value-based philosophy and trauma centric diagnosis. 1. Beating children as punishment is GLOBAL among less developed people and not just by parents. Teachers, uncles, aunts, older cousins, neighbors (adults). They really run with the idea of "It takes a village". I have experienced this personally and observed it countless times. 2. Kids form the majority of beggars, garbage collectors, farm workers and house servants. People have 10 kids because some of them are assumed to die. That is not a very powerful "you are valued" message. Now MAY BE , we can have a conversation about how paradoxically, true trauma is actually good. I don't know that but there is a debate to be had. But this nonsense of "We lost our ways but they had it right" is just pure B.S.

Angry (visibly angry, loud, violent or aggressive) children who are banished from the parent’s presence temporarily because of whatever childcare theory (time outs) do not develop trauma or any other kind of emotional constipation just because of that. Literally visible anger of them at type is a fight action system. If the child gets a time out, it doesn’t mean the child is not or is prevented from being angry. Literally the angry child and the calm child are two sides of one different personality. The child learns to regulate anger by training the fight/anger action system to be more functional and productive, etc., and learns not to go into the fight/angry action system, because the child learns emotional regulation by observing and mimicking others, not primarily by learning to mot be angry once angry.
That is entirely different from trauma. Trauma is being forced into the fight flight faun freeze systems constantly repeatedly or profoundly. It is insane to equate those two things, the one where children learn just to not remain 2-year olds, in a more systematic and functional way than say completely neglecting, yelling at, or hitting the child on the one hand (juxtaposed against, for example, talking the child through the child’s feelings (which can even be made to be abusive); and the other where the child is prevented from learning emotional regulation, and even forced to learn what would be dysfunctional coping mechanisms in most other contexts.

gabor also, accidentally i think, said the fast food industry caused the problem. doesn't that contradict what he was saying? how come people can learn to love themselves after a successful period with slimming world? and there aint no trauma therapy that goes on there, as far as i can tell. it's more about sticking to a strategy you believe in, and getting non-judgemental support in the process.
and look at the success of the AA and NA fellowships worldwide; again no trauma therapy, simply sticking with a programme that one believes in.

You have a point. As Jocko would say, Discipline Equals Freedom. When I treat clients, I must differentiate between re-experiencing Sx of PTSD to traumatic incidents that no longer evoke these responses. It’s a whole different kettle of fish. The latter, though informing your personality and way you view the world, must be addressed differently to the former which influences your day to day quite badly.
