Grooming Series: Trimming the Paws

- In this installment of my grooming series, I walk you through how I trim Winnie's paws. I trim around the exterior of the paw as well as between the toes and paw pads once a week. This helps keep the hair there in check, helps Winnie with her traction, and keeps her clean. I use my Chris Christensen Zone 5.5" Trimming Shears with the blunt edge to ensure a clean and safe trimming experience. I find that by being consistent with when and how I trim her paws, as with any of the other grooming related tasks I perform, Winnie is comfortable and relaxed because she knows exactly what to expect. Thanks for watching!

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a professional dog groomer or an expert of any kind on grooming, Shih Tzus, or dogs in general. This grooming series is a way to share my own personal experience with grooming and what I have learned over the past two years with you. What works for me and my dog may not work for you and yours.
Think you should teach us first how you make your dog stay motionless during whole trimming session.
👍👍👍 I kno right!
Elza Kang please!!!! Its almost like she's sedated
id say the dog is a show dog. they are trained very early on how to behave during grooming sessions.
Nope. If you look at her grooming videos, you'll know Winnie isn't a show dog.
Even on Benadryl my dog isn’t this chilled out
Super cute
actually winnie is just well trained..........
this dog is most definitely with out a doubt under sedation. i am a dog groomer and no dog EVER is that limp and unresponsive during a groom. unless its under sedation or dead.
Never have i seen such a chilled out dog, shes a beauty
Rainy Tedandeffi
Rainy, THATS exactly what I was thinking!!!!!! 😳
She is to chill… probably got something to chill out
@@jamiewilson339 wonder what it was bc I need it for my Shih Tzu so I can groom her myself.
how is she so calm..did you train her or she is like that?
This is the best video that I have seen. Most video's are not able to show the cuts so clearly. I cannot believe how calm Winnie is while you are doing this. You seem like such a sweet girl. Great job!
She seems sedated....
I wish my Shih tzu is so calm like Winnie, but he doesn't let me touch his paws.
Margui622 my dog Parker freaks out when you touch his front legs 😩
From a trained groomer and a grooming trainer you are holding you scissors completely wrong. You should hold them with your thumb and ring finger and only move your thumb. This will give you more control.
She looks sedated too cute
You and Winnie are absolutely adorable, I love watching your videos with my little Suggie-monster. *g* She's a a little cutie-pie Shorkie (half-Yorkie and half-Shi Tzu), that was given to me a little over three years ago. She's my little rescue baby and I couldn't see my life without her, she's definitely brought a lot of joy into it. And watching you and Winnie together with her, is like the highlight of my day! :)
Great job Jen (and Winnie). It never ceases to amaze me how calm Winnie is with her grooming process. That is a special level of trust you've instilled and should be so proud! As always, I enjoy your videos and so happy to see Miss Winnie. Also, she was sporting some extra cute bows!
how long have u been keeping a dead dog in ur house?
I think she's gone to sleep! Good Winnie!
great job!! much better then the professional video I just watched where the guy pulled and tugged on the poor dog, lifting his hind legs to shave the belly...aghhhh and the dog was so patient ...I really enjoyed your demonstration . thank you
How do you get her to lay so still? And what can I do to get her used to touching my Tzu's paws? I try rubbing them throughout the day every day then praise her for letting me handle them, but she really does NOT LIKE her paws messed with. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :) Also, I love your table and wall setup. I'm not sure if you've done a review of your station, but I'd really like to know where you got your wall setup, what you use as a grooming table, your fav products, and an ear grooming video would be great! 👍🏻 Winnie is beautiful and such a good dog! Oh yeah - how did you train her to put her head down?? Very interested in all of these. Hope I'm not overwhelming you, but they would be very helpful esp for us Tzu owners that want ours to look beautiful like Winnie. Thanks so much for all of your informative videos!
I hate shih tzus hair this long,I prefer the shorter hair cut. Plus they look cuter.
To each their own. Both styles are cute.
Loved your videos! My Shih poo is 6 months, same coloring as your dog and has long thick hair, not curly at all, I am having trouble with brushing him, he goes after the brush and tries to play with it, I do brush him and just gave him a bath, but I feel he is a little too active for me to be using scissors on him as yet, any suggestions? I hate to take him to the groomer because they like to shave them and I want to keep him in a sort of puppy cut. Maybe this will just take time?
my dog, same breed, shitsu is very agitated..cant get her to calm down so i cant do her haircut.. she's 7 months now and never had a haircut or proper grooming cos she cant relax. i tried to cut her hair once but end up cutting it too short and not regular/equal, but helps in showing her face..but now the hair is growing back.. what can i do to calm my dog down to give her a cut..is it ok if i give her a sedative or something?help please!!!
doubt it unless she is constantly sedated if u watch her other vids or vlogs the dog is like this all the time...shes just chill
You need to watch her other videos for sure. She washes winnie weekly. She trims weekly. She also brushes her out daily. Most dogs YOU would see at your parlor are not people who effectively take care of their dogs as much as Jen takes care of Winnie. That's why they bring the dog to you.
No she doesn't. Winnie (this dog) is used to daily grooming and is very well trained. Winnie is 2 years old now and she has been groomed every day since she was 12 weeks old. Shih Tzu dogs love this kind of attention.
It is clear Winnie loves you! She lays there so willingly while you groom. I am going to get a puppy soon and I want to keep him well groomed, but i don't want to stress him out. Did you start grooming Winnie when she was young?
clearly must be right, you can't even say she is clipping his nails because when she first starts the dog is just laying there no clipping was done. something aint right with this?
hey umm could u show your house and everything your house is sooo beatiful and i want to live their jajaja but yeah plz and i watch everysingle day your videos their so cool
It's not training so much as repetition. My 6 month old is pretty chill. Not AS chill, but getting there, she still moves when she gets tickled lol
im so glad she has such a great owner and tell Winnie I said hi she is ssssoooooo cute im planning on getting a dog her same breed :)
I am honestly shocked, pleasantly so, that a non-professional groomer, would splurge on a pair of Chris Christenson shears.
I also own a shihtzu. But when I touch his feets, he's pulling them off like it is so itchy.
Can you tell me why? :(
Pobre perrito esta drogado ni tan siquiera se mueve hací no sirve tu vídeo el animal debe estar consiente...abuso del animal.
yes i understand now. my dogs is now behave while i'm grooming them. yes your right they get used to it.
Omg... her shih tzu is so calm. Wish my shih tzu was like that. But she is getting use to it though.. lol
Do you sedate sweet Winnie b4 you Groom her.(Serious question) This is 2nd video where your baby doesn’t move.. Wish my baby was so chill..He would NEVER let me do this as of yet., . He’s a Havapoo (?) rescue had him about 3m So there’s still time. One day
its because the dogs been put to sleep before hand it would be easy if could that first good video tho
You mentioned on another video's comments about promoting adoption/rescue. Where did you get Winnie?
hi.. you should try get a finishing clipper, would be more save and fast..... ani from Andis or Wahl.
Ok. My dog is calm, but she doesn't look like she's taking a nap when I cut around her feet. lol.
you know my first thought was is the dog dead? he is just laying there. i can't believe this???
She lays soooo good. I wish my dogs hair on his paws wouldnt grow fast but it does and he is a clutz so I have to cut it often or he slips on tile/wood floors. He is a Newfoundland.
Is that dog drugged, because my puppy will not sit still....lol
If only mine were that still/chill! She’s adorable!
this is the best clip on cutting shih tzus that i see u are very good really
yes why is the dog not moving? how can you do that, its that pure training?
Is the dog drugged or just super chill/never care in the world dog?
Such good advice, but my shih tzu is very impatient. What do i do????????
What brand/kind of clippers should I buy? I have never used them before.
Nice video! I trim my dog a bit different, but everyone has their own style :D
No need to pay big money for grooming.
Do you sedate your dog? Why she's not moving in all of your videos?
thank you so much, i am going to start grooming my shih tzu, as the dog groomers dont seem to cut her the way i like,
For anyone watching this is totally not how to trim a pets paws.
what does what a poor dog mean? she obviously is relaxed.
my cocker spaniel does that too,its called complete trust
U have the most calm dog ever.so adorable
As a groomer of fifteen years, I'm just glad to see a dog owner take care of their dog!
i wish my shihtzu is like winnie...very behave dog...when i'm combing my shihtzu he bite the comb and keep turning around like he doesn't want to comb his fur...can you give me some tips for that situation?by the way my dog is male..thanks...
Sharmie Sandoval same 😑😧😔
i would be scared to death if i were the dog
Take her for an hour run, not walk, run lol
What`are you doing that she lie so quietly?
there is no reinforcement here huuummmm
Have u given her sleeping pills 💊 🤣
lol ur dog lok dead !! what a poor dog
That is probably so relaxing for her.
and winnie is soo cute and beatiful
You're a lot braver than I am, I would be freaking out trimming between the paw pads. lol
The dog was sedated, right?
Did she drug this poor dog?
clearly she drugged the dog. lol
must be the most laid back dog
its not eazy they move so much
why the og is not moving/;
Wouldn't It start to smell?!
Post new vid pls
Is Winning sleeping?
I just use a 40 blade
My son has one much like Winnie, she's not 2 yet. His wife and he do the grooming and she doesn't mind it. I just think their personalities are different just like people. Hana, well what I say, I love her to pieces but I don't see her changing any time soon lol.
I have 2 Shih Tzus, the mom, Hana age 7 and her only pup Mikala, age 3. Hana hates grooming of any kind, she has seen groomers all her life and still carries on like it' torture. Mikala loves it, lies still for them and for me for her daily care in between groomers.
is he..... dead??????
dont shop adopt!!!!!
your dog is absolutely adorable.
i love how completely calm and collected she is, even when you're moving all over the place. you can see her looking at you, too. just. laying there. like she's completely fine with it.
LOL. you can tell how much she loves you, and how much you love her.
it's SO CUTE that you put bows in her hair like that. seriously, it's hilarious and absolutely adorable at the same time.
Feel free to upload your own videos on how to trim. Instead of going around to every channel and complaining that people don't do things identical to you.
if you groom your dog twice a day everyday from 8 weeks of age in the same way each timeand reward after its all over this is what you get my matlese is exactly the same;D
I've never seen a dog go so limp when holding their paws, let alone *trimming* them. Congrats on raising her right!
I love the TLC you give Winnie....she is adorable and so well behaved. Just wondering what do you feed Winnie?
I have to cut my newfie's paw fur too or else he slides (though I think he does it on purpose)
Your videos are so clear, helpful, informative and pleasure to watch. You're a delight to listen to. Thank you. Wishing you all the best
Wait whats going on? I click on this video and she says "Winnie", my shih tzu dog'sname and then I look closely at the dog and Winnie looks just like my dog and Im like when did we take my dog to be groomed once a WEEK at this girl's place? XD
Winnie is a doll, such a good girl. Wish my lhasa was this calm. My older lhasa likes being bathed and groomed but he's 3. The baby is just 1 and she's a menace. He he
ooo thank you for this video!!!! I'm going to get a shih tzu about february or january of the next year and I didn't want to spend much money by asking a professional to do it .. becausa I want to save money to buy lots of things for her (it's my first dog)
As always, another great video. Thanks so much for sharing these great tips!
I can watch this video over and over again!!! I just love Winnie...she's so cute!! Since I saw this I've bben wanting to get a shih-tzu.
She is absolutely adorable! You have spent lots of time with her, I can tell!
Do you use anything on her paws to keep the pads soft?
That is the most chilled dog in the world!! I love her!!!
How did you get her to be so still during grooming?
This dog is sedated.....I do not agree with this
Amy Currie my dog is the same way she's very calm and even sleeps as I do this and she's NOT sedated! Some dogs have a great temperament and get used to being groomed if it is done as puppies. She also mentioned in a previous video that she follows a schedule for her.
Amy Currie
I know this is an old reply but I’m new at trying to learn how to groom.
Amy......I didn’t realize YOU WERE THERE WHEN SHE DID THIS! Ummmmm NOT! Maybe she just has trained her baby to lay still. U really shouldn’t make assumptions like that.
Literally just trimmed my dogs' paw pad fur with clippers for the very first time and they laid on their side like this while I did it lol. You know nothing.
how do you trim winnies "dress"
@MAKEUPyourmindXO A breeder.
