- Hi there! I'm back with the first official grooming video in Winnie's Grooming Series. This is the basic daily routine that I do every morning. It is the bare minimum I can do to keep Winnie's coat looking nice and keep her healthy as a long-haired dog. I will be back with other videos in this grooming series soon, showcasing other elements of our grooming routine. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or requests. Thanks for watching & subscribing!

i am a professional groomer and i have to say im so impressed with you and winnie it makes me so happy to see you putting this effort into your dogs coat care ,i find it fustrating that most of my clients dont understand that the longer i leave there shih tzus coat the more the have to work on it at home ......and dogs love the attention as you see winnie is totally eating this pampering up cause you make it a enjoyable experience for her ......awesome
It's not just the dog who's being really patient here, it's the owner too... 22 minutes minimum grooming ritual every single day, with precision and cleanup, that's dedication. I don't think I could bring myself to own a dog with a long coat. But I commend you on your responsible care for your dear shih tzu.
I had a wild crazy-ass dog that would disappear for a couple days at a time, and when he came home, he had some of everything in his coat. He wasn't a stray, he had a collar, rabies tags, etc., and everybody knew him. Not a troublemaker, just a mutt with a shaggy coat. We'd try to cut the knots out of his coat but he'd just get upset and move. Finally we just figured out, after watching him yank out burrs and knots, he'd rather take care of it himself. Now that's what I call a "grooming routine"! What a guy.
22 minutes goes by quickly when you're doing something you enjoy!
Not really 22. She speed played the other side of Winnie's brushing, and that was about 6 minutes: 28 minutes of grooming. I do a once every memory kind of grooming with my spitz; I tend to forget the rest of the world during that time. It's fun, there's play, and a special kind of communication during that time, and it's the most relaxing thing I experience when I get myself to do it.
I brush my dog almost 1hr or more smh...
You're not gonana notice the time if you're enjoying
I wrote this comment before I owned a dog. Now I have a greyhound who doesn't really need much brushing except maybe once a week, but I now see how relaxing and enjoyable it is to brush out a dog and neaten them up. It is very satisfying. I can now appreciate how people with long haired dogs would enjoy their longer grooming sessions.
Watching your videos gave me the confidence to keep my dog in his natural long hair. My Shih Tzu is 10 months old and he is just as good as Winnie on the grooming table. Thank you for all of your videos and tips on grooming your long-haired beauty! Best wishes to you and your beautiful kids and a kiss to Winnie!
Okay.... first of all, your studio is AMAZINGLY CUTE AND TIDY, second of all, your dog is extremely well-behaved, and third of all, your hair skills (including your own) are so perfect!
I have never seen a more well-behaved dog! It is certainly obvious that you have trained her well and that you show her so much love, attention, and affection! Good job! :)
I love how she just passes out on the table because she knows what's coming :D She is a lovely dog :)
Wow!! What a wonderful display of trust and love between you and your sweet Winnie. She's such a good girl!! Thanks for sharing, Jen! Your camera man did a great job too!
Snuggles to Winnie! :)
I'm amazed she just lays down like that.my dog tries biting the brush or my finger like he's playing
same my dog does that all the time
My Min Holly too.
Ya true even mine does the same thing
same here with our shih tzu boy
What a sweet and incredibly patient dog! You two must be so bonded after all the years of attention, grooming and care.
I don't know if you still keep up with the comments on this vid, but I love this one.... I have had a helluva time with my diy grooming adventure, lol, & what you have going is closer to what I had pictured than what really was lol Anyway, I would like to see how to "start over" with a short clip, but with plans of growing out full... what to trim, what to allow to grow, with stages, & important landmarks on the body to look for when trimming, etc I've searched the internet & I can't find anything that helps me. I like the style of Winnie's coat, but maybe even list the areas that could be trimmed shorter to avoid the daily upkeep for those who can't/ rather not.... I brush out my Sativa Las Vegas nightly, removing her ponytails, & put them in fresh each morning. I also try keeping her teeth brushed, but have gotten lazy with that lol....TYIA
I’m also on the lookout ... if you find any, will you post in the comments ?
i love your videos and you are really the only person on youtube that i know of that answeres the veiwers questions. winnie is so well behaved when your grooming her and then when u gave her the treats and she didnt eat them right away must have taken a lot of work to train her.
you amaze me on how well you are doing with your first dog I hope you do inspire other owners new and old.
I love how your dog just lays there, she is adorable.
I love that you are taking care of your pet's coat so well; Winnie is really lucky. I groom professionally, and wish more customers brushed their pets like you do. I heard you say the slicker brush is sharp; there is one by Master Grooming Tools that is a double-sided mat-breaking brush that I use daily. You may want to check it out; it does not scratch unless you brush too long in the same spot.
Wonderful video Jen! Was so amazing to watch Winnie be so calm and relaxed about the whole thing. You did a really great job explaining everything, I really like it. Don did a great job filming it for us too. Please tell him how much we appreciate his efforts too! Anxiously waiting for the next one - have a great weekend!
Wow what a well behaved and beautiful dog. She is adorable!
I don't have a dog but now I want one! Winnie is amazing - she truly enjoys her grooming time.
Winnie always looks so beautiful and flawless! You do an amazing job!
Thank you SO much for doing this series, Jen! I know it's an older series, but I just discovered it, lol. I've adopted a 10 year old Shih Tzu (seriously, how did I ever survive without a Shih Tzu in my life?) and was very overwhelmed at taking proper care of her coat. THANK you!!
WOW, Jen! you're so good at grooming her! and she is such a sweet dog...
Seven years ago I found this channel and it made me want to get a shih tzu and when my mom asked me if I thought that I could handle it I have her an entire presentation. At that point I was 10 year old, sadly now I still do not have a shih tzu but I REALLY want one, instead I was gifted a Labrodoodle and a Labrodoodle Retriever for Christmas and surprisingly the grooming video for Winnie worked really good on even the large dogs... minus the bows sadly 😂💜
Usually when I search for dog grooming it always comes up with cutting or shaving them and it was starting to annoy me so thank you for putting this video up xxxxxx
One more thing you are such a good owner xxxxxx
omg she is so well trained she looks so relaxed :))
What is evilcowboy talking about? Too much hair and that she should not treat this dog like a doll. I'm a dog groomer and it's such a relief to finally see a dog owner actually caring about the dogs well being instead of letting it get matted. And no simply shaving any dog or that matter is not good for dogs, we just do it these days because it's convenient for us. Do your research this is an ancient breed, it's looked this way for hundreds of years and was highly respected. Thank you for showing people how you take care of your dog, it's way more than I've seen most dog owners even do. Plus I'm impressed you check your work with a comb because people say they brush their but most of the time they brush right over the mats.
She's so well behaved, LOL!
I'm allergic to dogs, so I can't have one. And I don't know if I'd have the patience for this sort of thing each day. But I admire you for doing it and taking such good care of her. It really shows!
You are so organized and neat also!
shi tzus are hypo allergenic, they have hair instead of fur. they are allergy people friendly :)
also i always kept my Ida in a puppy cut very easy to maintain with no brushing :) just get her to the groomer when it gets too long
alchemyrox Well, I think it's the dander that's more of a problem. But I'll keep this in mind! I do have a friend who owns one, so hopefully in the summer I'll ask to come over for an extended period of time to see how I feel. If it would work for me, I would be overjoyed!
Wow I love how she just lays there.
I have seen a few videos about grooming but none give the details of your videos. You are correct in saying that the dog gets use to the routine, After I brush Katie, she heads upstairs to the kitchen to get a special treat. I really like how you have a weekly routine and have decided that I am going to follow one too.(might take some time but I will make a real effort )
OMG! You have such a precious dog! And you have done an absolutely incredible job of training her. I love how she knows every step that comes next in her grooming process. And at the end, when you put her four treats out in a row and tell her to wait....... she does just that! Then you say "ok!" and she dives in! Love it!!! Thank you for sharing - I learned a lot from this video. :)
i just have to say that i love how you put so much work into your baby girl! i can't wait to get out of college and get a winnie baby of my own!
Holy Cow! If any of my dogs ever laid that still for a grooming I'd think they were dead! Amazing!
Jen,
You are the best mom ..! So proud to know you from TH-cam 🐶💟🐶
Your amazing with her I have 3 beautiful shih tzus they are amazing I always look to utube for suggestions glad I found you thank you for your videos
This was great! Winnie is so amazingly calm and well trained. I wish my Shih Tzu would relax like that for grooming. I've invested in some of your tools, so maybe I'll start working on her. Can't wait to see the rest of the series, especially the ear cleaning and nail clipping. Thanks for sharing your techniques. :)
OMG.... You Dog is Amazing, Congrats. My dog is very restless and does not like the brush, She lost her hair in a small area by the groomer stress and and now I have to do.
Love it. Adorable
I'm Definitely in inspired...I plan on getting a Shih Tzu in the next few months(my first dog) and I want to be as consistent/knowledgeable as Jennifer...She is awesome with Winnie.
You make it look so easy. Thank you for sharing. Your little girl is so pretty!!!
Love your videos, we got a 6 month old shih tzu a month ago his fur is only about two inches long at the moment as his previous owner kept it short. I have found your videos very helpfull so far as we are hoping to grow it out, it's already proving a challenge as he loves laying in the gardens. We currently was him 1-2 times a week and brush him atleast two times aday, we don't have a proper routine but I think we should start one
wow she is such a good dog, great video
What a wonderful dog, she really behaves.
I LOVED watching this! It is very clear that you do this daily cause I have never seen a dog this relaxed during maintenance before. She looks fantastic! Subscribed!
Hi! I have Black Labrador dog, her name is Lady. She loves those routines and you made it easy for me. I have an advice for you: If you dog doesn't like combs and brushes buy a Glove-brush. I have it and it's very comfortable.
I have 2 shih Tzu pups and I learned a lot from winnie's grooming videos so thank you for them I watch them offen to brush up on my knowledge and I use this grooming spray and its great
I love how your dog goes along with the process and doesnt even move when you groom her!i have a puppy and he will nit even take a bath he never wants to stay still!
Winnie knows the exact drill AMAZING!!!
Very impressive! Winnie is so well behaved and so patient. You've trained her very well! We *heart* Winnie :-)
How cute... Winnie's falling asleep :)
Thank you, these are great! I just got a two year old little boy Tzu, and I'm excited to start grooming him.
Good job... seeing as this is a grooming video including the wiping of her face I will mention again as I already covered this on another video that I recently heard that using a little coconut oil for the stains down her eyes will remove the stain and keep it from staining as it is anti bacterial and the stains are caused by the bacteria. It will also condition her hair. I hope that I have passed along a great hint.
I was reading some comments and they were surprized at how she tangled up from bedtime to the morning and I was wondering if you ever considered using satin covers on her bed to lessen the tangling and damage to the hair... I have used satin pillow cases myself for that reason.
I also have a 7 month old Shih Tzu who's previous owner kept her hair short. It's also just a couple inches long but I'm trying to grow it out. A bath 1-2 times a week may be too much. Generally you don't want to wash a dog- any dog more than once a week or every 2 weeks if you can. Their skin will dry out & get flaky. Also they NEED the natural oils on their skin to help their coat. It's part of keeping them healthy. I had a Shih Tzu when I was a teen so I know some of what it takes. Have fun!
This video is awesome! Love the tips! 🐶💕Love from Chi💕
you are so good! thanks! i was looking for something easy and REAL . yay!
I love her coloring! What a pretty dog. :)
Lot of work, but Winnie is so brave! At the end I saw some space behind you who need a makeover:-) next mhwl video, yeah!
You and your dog are amazing. 💖🐱
Your dog is so beautiful, she just lays there while u groom her. Never stop making videos💠
WOW, I'm studying grooming at school but you are really great ! And your dog is soooo pretty :)
I also have a Shih-tu I hope his hair would be as healthy as your dog's hair ! =D
Great job !!
haha winnie is so sweet :) She is sooo patient!!!
I like winni you are doing good job dear you have many patience to keep her so lovable and clean... May God bless you.
Hi, thanks so much for posting this video. I've started to use a few of your techniques when grooming my shih tzu. I was wondering, how do care for Winnie's ear? My shih tzu dislikes having his ear hair plucked and the last time he had it done he got an ear infection so now I'm trying to find other alternatives than plucking his ear hair.
I have truly enjoyed watching your video and I have fallen in love with Winnie. I have a shih tzu named Olivia who is now 6 years old, same brindle color as your baby. They look exactly alike. However, my Livi cannot stand to be combed or brushed. I get her groomed regularly (monthly) and I struggle with combing her. Is it too late to get her comfortable with brushing the same as you do your baby? Any tips will be helpful. If you'd like to see pictures I'd be happy to share them. Kyla
That dog is just so resigned, it's hilarious.
i love your video... it has so many information. i have a new dog and your video helps me a lot!! thank you so much!
Your video is great. I have Shih Tzus for years and had to put our 16 year old down 2 years ago and ended up getting another one who is almost 2 years old. Mia does not like to be groomed at all and tends to want to snap at me when I get near her legs and arms. I've tried everything to get her to stay still and no luck. I can't afford to keep taking her to the groomers yet she mats very easily. I am ready to resort to a muzzle. Any suggestions
Wheres Winnie? Imiss your vlogg 💖 can you plss upload more vids thankyou 😊💕💕
wow she is so good!!
She’s such a good girl!!! ❤️💕🐾
Make a video teaching us how to train her to be so good.
When I groom my maltese its more like a wresting match. I need a glass of wine before to calm down ha!
Really enjoyed your video
such a well behaved dog!!! makes me really miss my shih tzu
Thank you for all of your wonderful videos and tips. We have use them with our baby we just brought home and she has been so eager to participate in her grooming. We are in that awkward Bang stage that every girl knows. Do you have any suggestions on what to do with them in the growing out period so that that's not too tight on the eye? I am not a professional dog groomer but I love my girls and I take good care of them and really appreciate owners who gives solid advice. Thank you thank you thank you. My husband and I watched your video before we got to bring Karma home. we both thought there's no way a dog would lay down to be brushed. Lo and behold our girl thinks that's the biggest treat ever to lay down and get her brushing every evening. Thank you for proving it is not an anomaly.
It almost looked like Winnie was going to fall asleep and fall off the table 😄
she's lovely!!! Great tutorial!
Very cute!! her hair is so silky and beautiful. will she become a short haired dog when you have kids and less time for daily grooming?
mscavsfan she cut Winnie’s hair shorter because she’s 9 now and she didn’t like being groomed anymore
i really enjoyed thank you for sharing. i now know how to do the basics. and i have gone to the site you posted for the products also. thanks you angela. Big kiss for the pretty winnie from my lil boy Harvey xxx woof woof
I love winnie!
Your baby is SO well trained, my shih tzu gives me the hardest time when I try and wash her and stuff, she does let me brush her but gets quickly annoyed with the whole process, she's older than Winnie, she's 10 my little girl! I wish I trained her from the beginning like you did with Winnie! I have to take her to groomers which stinks. I am hoping to learn to groom her myself
I like your room its neat and organized
Would you do a video on how you trained Winnie to allow you to brush her as she is just so well behaved! I have always wanted a dog with longer hair but have been terrified of having to groom his/her as my friend's have a long haired dog and it refuses to allow them to brush it and so his hair (Casper) becomes very knotted. Great video by the way! I love all your channels :) x
Was it raining outside when you filmed this video? Because the first three or four times I watched it, I didn't hear it, but when I put in earbuds (high-quality) there was a defined splatter of rain in the background.
you're dog is so amazing. mine is a year old male, and i find it hard to brush his hair.
I can't stop smiling while i see her cute videos ❤️
you should do a video of how did you train your dog
This is so cool
she is adorable
So well behaved
lol the way Winnie just lays there :)
When you said in some of your videos that you cut the bands do you cut the bands on the bows too???
Winnie is absolutely adorable!!! How did you get her to be so well behaved?
Amazing. Great job 👍She's really beautiful. Impressed in how she was still the whole time.
I’m considering getting an Asian Frieze cut for my baby to help cut down on the drying time and knots. Any thoughts or suggestions?
I think your an absolutely charming woman. I also have a little one named Buubear. Really appreciate your efforts especially the air travel as I hope to take him along. Keep up the great videos your just lovely.
wow your shih tzu is so obedient, did you train her? mine doesn't like combing :(
Where do you buy the clear bands for winnie,s top-notch, plus how many or little can you buy thank you kindly Heidi
Look at her lil self CUTE AND SPOILED😩😍😍😍😍
WOW...she is the best behaved dog ever (in my opinion)
I have almost a 2 year old shih tzu and I just had her hair all whacked off at the groomers because I live in a very wooded area and she brought sticks and leaves and all that in from her coat and they created lots of knots. So now I'm going to get the proper brushes and combs and let her hair grow back out:)
What a great doggie!
I like how she put the Disclaimer at the start
*Claps*
You really take good care of her, your a good mommy.
