What is the carnet de passage?
The Carnet de Passages en Douane is the international customs document, mandatory in many countries of the world, which allows the temporary duty-free importation of private and commercial vehicles.
It is accepted in all countries that have acceded to the 1954 New York Customs Convention, and is issued by automobile clubs;In some countries it is compulsory, in others it is optional but recommended, where it is best NOT to use the carnet and ESPECIALLY in which countries it can be completely avoided thus saving a lot of money.
What does the carnet de passage look like ?
The Carnet de passage is similar to a checkbook, it is a multi-sheet printout size A4, it is written in English and French.
On the cover you find the name of the holder, the association that issued it, the identification number and the period of validity, on the back you find the detailed description of the vehicle guaranteed by the cdp and the space for any extension, behind the cover you find the rules for using the carnet and on the last side the list of countries where the carnet is recognized.
Rules for use and how the carnet de passage works :
Each sheet of the carnet corresponds to a temporary stay in one of the countries listed on the back of the carnet.
The period of temporary importation is fixed according to the legislation of the country you visit but cannot be longer than the carnet's validity expiration date.

Dear Sir, thank you for the information. How do I distinguish the countries that require CDP and do not require? I’ve seen the map where it lists the countries that require carnet but some countries are not obligatory but recommended only. In the case of countries where carnet is only recommended, should I get one as well?
If you can avoid using the Carnet, i would avoid it, but unfortunately in some countries is mandatory.

Hi Rumen, when you fill in the application to apply for the carnet they do ask if you have changed any parts, you may say no or just state it, if it's not too loud, i would't mention it, however remember that despite Carnet or not, there is a minimum of compliance in every country you will visit according to the specific country regulations, for example, in some countries tinted windows on a car are prohibited , hence, i do have the carnet, but after middle east I have to remove it.. I have one question I am Pakistani living in Saudi Arabia and I want to travel Pakistan from here by road but Saudi carnet is not valid for Pakistan so if I travel to UAE can I obtain carnet from there or not ?
Hi Syed, you should be able to obtain a carnet to use in Kuwait, Iran then Pakistan, ask the Automobile club of Saudi Arabia , SATA Saudi Automobile and touring association, google it. Hope this helps !!

@@ali.hassan.90 the best thing you can do is to write email to the various Automobile clubs and ask them, get names and quote your ref. We personally have a UK registered car and we got a Carnet in Germany, other friends got a CDP in a different country of registration. for what i know you can also get a temporary CDP in Iran on arrival at a cost of about 500 USD, but then if you need a carnet in Pakistan you need to do temporary papaerwork there also so you need to value what's the best solution for you. My best advise, write few emails around to the Automobile Clubs. Good Luck ! :)))
