  • The Essential Guide to Any Motorcycle Traveler - Online Course: rtw-adventures.com/online-cou...
Everything about Ferries, Visas, Temporary import & Carnet DP !
If you don’t have any plans to ride your motorcycle abroad this video is not for you, but if you are born with the adventure spirit, like me, keep watching because I will tell you the most important things about ferries, Visas, Temporary import and carnet de passage.
    Number 1 - Ferries.
As I said guys I live in Europe, but many are from UK, USA, Africa or even Australia. So if they want to see the world they need to ship their bikes. Ferries are maybe the best option at the moment. The procedure is very easy. What you need to do is just to go online and book your ticket. The companies, the ferry lines and the prices will depend from your country. You can easily find it in Google. Tips for ferries:
    - Lock all the stuff you don’t need on board. Helmet, jackets, bags…
    - Make sure that your lights and GPS are off.
    - Do not forget the key on the ignition.
    - Bring some soft cushions to add under the belts, especially if you have expensive bike.
    - Side stand is usually more stable then centre stand.
    Number 2 - Visas
Here we come to a little a bit more difficult situation. If you live in big capital city, most of the embassies will be there, but if you are, somewhere in the country you need to travel. Also keep in mind that you need to make it twice, once to apply for visa and once to receive it. In some embassies they might have an option to send your passport back. Many countries also offer online Visa, but in most of the cases you need to send the passport to the embassy to actually add your Visa in. I know that this sounds very discouraging, but when you make it once every other will be much easy.
How to behave once you get there?
This sound like stupid question, but believe me it is not. Show some respect, dress well and shave your face if necessary. Do not go with shorts and tongs. Even in the summer wear long pants and shirt. You might think that this it doesn’t matter, because you are American, German or whatever citizen you are, (nothing personal, just example), but actually it always matters.
    Number 3 - Temporary import.
As I said in Europe you don’t need to worry about it, but out of Europe you will definitely need it. This is basically a declaration which one you have to fill at the border. It will be give to you from the border officers and you need to complete it there. Nothing special. Your names, nationality, passport number, then your bike make, model, engine size VIN and registration plate numbers. The dates you are entering, the border name and many more like this. Usually they have it few languages, not everywhere, but at least in most of the borders. You can always ask for help somebody with more experience around you. You have to fill two copies sign it and go to the counter.
The Visa and the temporally import are two different things. The visa is for you as a person the document is for your vehicle or motorcycle.
Number 4 - Carnet de Passage
This is maybe the most difficult procedure or at least the most expensive. This is very similar with the temporary import declaration, but in this case your country guarantee that the bike will not be sold there. The difference is that instead of filling this pages you will have it already prepared in a folder. The number of the pages depends from the number of the countries you want to visit.

I would add: the insurance! Not only regarding the motorcycle, but also the rider / passenger. Traveling with the best insurer is very important, when things go wrong, and you have to be repatriated, good security is indispensable, just like the visas, carnet de passage and temporary import!! Thanks Pavlin.

@@mothrone well i guess because of the Corona Panic there wont be any trips in 2020 and a RTW trip seems unrealistic to me in 2021 because many countries will be very careful and ask you about additional documents i guess cuz of Corona. I think we within the EU will be able to move normally maybe in autumn but then the next Pandemic could occur. Most of the Germans gave up their summervacations already, guess other countries will be similar this year.

Thank you for all your informative and truthfull videos on motor bike touring. With all your experience I believe you are the right person to ask several questions. I am an American citizen living in Thailand planning a world tour on a AfricaTwin that I would purchase in Australia. I would be registering the bike in a my Australians friends name as I can not do so. Question 1. Will this create problems for me in crossing borders?
Question 2. Will I have a problem getting a Carnet in Australia if I am not a resident and the bike is registered in someone else name? Or do I have to get Carnet from my country
Question 3. I am looking at 2 routes to take to Europe. My first choice is via Pakistan and thru Iran. I have not checked With Embassy in Bangkok yet about visa for USA citizen. However I would like to know if you have already traveled thru Iran. Thank you again for all the informative videos..

we are curious about entering Iran! we must forget our trip to india with our motorcycles, we do not get any more Carnet DP for this country! Happy is the one who has one! like you :-)

    • @motorcycleadventures
      @motorcycleadventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Carnet de passages is not for specific country. It is just a page in a folder with your motorcycle details. If you say that you will go to Iran they will say no, but if you don't they will give you. There is no country name on each page. What you actually paying is number of pages, 5,10 or 20. If you still want to go there go and say that you will travel to Africa.

    • @wheeloftime6505
      @wheeloftime6505 6 ปีที่แล้ว

The problem has started with the news: Iran banishes motorcycles with more than 250cc.
On August 2, 2018 ADAC received the following information:
"IRAN: Since July 23, 2018 the temporary importation of motorcycles with engine capacity of more than 250 CC and of American branded motorcycles is forbidden.
Since receipt of this notification, we work at high pressure to obtain more information.
As soon as we know more, we will inform you."
Maybe you got from Bulgaria a better CdP! in Germany and from ADAC you get the CdP for 3 categories and you have to specify which category you need! the category determines the price of the guarantee you have to pay
Category 1. Egypt, India, Iran, Pakistan, Sri Lanka CdP is valid in all carnevelevanten countries
Category 2. South African Customs Union CdP is valid in all carnevelevanten Countries, but not in India, Iran, Pakistan, Egypt and Sri Lanka
Category 3. Other destination CdP is valid in all carnevelevanten Countries, but not in India, Iran, Pakistan, Egypt, Sri Lanka and the South African Customs Union
From now until further in category 1 ADAC writes CdP is valid in all carnevelevanten Countries, but not in Iran!
My most recent information is: since 02.08 most travelers have the permission to cross the country with their motorcycles within 7 to 10 days!
I'm curious if you can travel through Iran I wish you luck :-) I like your videos, you give very important information! bravo you make great job!

Ok, didn't know that. Another thing, I guess you know it but just in case... For riding thru Rohtang pass(Manali-Leh highway) and for some areas in Ladhak(Nubra valley and maybe even Kardung la) you'll need a special permit, Indian tourist visa doesn't cover that. Also, Rohtang pass is closed on Tuesdays for maintenance. These permits can be obtained in Manali(for Rohtang) and in Leh for the restricted areas in Ladakh. As far as I've heard it is not a problem to get those permits.

Although we need to pay a deposit in our national automobile club, does it happen sometimes that some countries still ask you to pay something to get our bikes in ? Can we travel only with TIP without CDP ? If so, is it cheaper than to use a CDP ?

Hi Dan, you actually pay for pages. They have different options: 5 pages, 10 pages, 20 pages. More pages, higher price. There is no any information about the countries you going to visit. For example I can say Iran, but go with the same page to Oman.

When do you need a Carnet de Passages rather than just an import declaration. Why bother with a Carnet de Passages when you can just do the import declaration?

In some countries, like Iran, India, Pakistan... there is no other option.

    Hi Pavlin!
I read recently on a FB post that Iran has issued a new law (or revived an existing one, it's not clear) by the end of July not accepting motorcycles over 250cc and cars over 2000cc. Very puzzling...
It seems this info was confirmed by ADAC. As you live in Germany, maybe you can contact them for further notice. It's not mentioning if this is valid for Iranian citizens only or foreign travelers as well. In doubt, it's better to ask.
I hope this will help you for our trip to India!
    Ride long, Ride safe!!!

I already asked them and they confirm that it is for all motorcycles over 250cc. It doesn't matter where you come from, do you have Carnet, temporary or other import. The same was confirmed from Bulgaria (SBA).

It's sad to hear that... Big limitation for a lot of riders or travelers...
For me, I don't mind because I will go with 125 and 200cc.
But for others, with bigger bikes, it's really sad news...
What's your new travel itinerary, I'm very curious!

Very nice video with lots of information. Ii need advice from you. I am a UK citizen, living in the UK (Bangladeshi Origin). I can not find any information from Bangladesh. I do not want to travel all way down from UK to India. My plan is: to buy a big motorcycle (600-1000cc) from India and than ride it to Bangladesh. Than I will either export it back to UK from Bangladesh or from India whichever option is given/better to me. I found out in Bangladesh more than 165cc bike not allowed for registration. for temporary bike import for example in my case I have to give 100% bank guaranty deposit. I am not sure how will I do that in border , any idea? obviously I am not inside a proper town in bangladesh that I can make a bank guaranty from bangladesh. I might not carry that much cash with me, only thing I will have debit card and credit cards. would you give me any advice about this?

You need Carnet de passage. Made in the country you are living. Paid in advance.

I have the same philosophy, behave, approach...call it how you like. But it is a pity that you have to give those advice like : don't be arrogant, dress well, be friendly.
Good persons should know all these things naturally...
It sounds so obvious but unfortunatelly it is not...
For exemple if as a polish guy I go to the russian ambassy I know that I should make even more friendly effort... and for a russian the same. It is sad but it is life.
