Due to the expense of the Carnet and the inherent risks when driving through a less prosperous part of the world in a modern and expensive vehicle that will attract attention, it is always better to take an older model of vehicle. Not only this, but older vehicles are easier to maintain by local mechanics.

You’ll have to check with CARS Europe who use the Carnets, but my understanding is that it’s based in current market value. Fortunately the accessories bolted to a vehicle (roof tent, winch, other mods etc) are not taken into account when they determine the value, just the base vehicle.

Hi Faraz. The normal policy when venturing outside your own geographic area is to purchase a Carnet de Passage in your home country for entry into other countries that require such a document. Here in the United Kingdom, we can travel throughout Europe, Turkey and North Africa without the need for a Carnet. I don't personally know anything about a temporary Carnet on the Turkey / Iran border, but it might be a Transit document that you are referring to. This normally gives you something like 3 days in which to cross Iran, but wouldn't allow you to tour the country. The best thing is to post your request on the Horizon's Unlimited website, but I'm sure the question would have already been asked, so you might be able to find it within their forum www.horizonsunlimited.com A quick search on Google brought up this website www.overlandtoiran.com/cranet-at-iranian-border. We’re planning our overland trip - renewed our passports last year and the digital photos have expired. We know we need passport photos with us - do they need to be copies of ones in our passport? If so can we just take a photo of the copies and get them printed from there or can we have new photos done that don’t then match our passport ones?? Great videos - very informative, thank you
Hey Mac, I'm planning to drive my car to Pakistan. Would it be possible to leave the car there? I'm doing nothing illegal it'll be my personal driving car just like the way it is in England, I was thinking that it'll be more fun to drive there than letting it sit in a container on a ship for about 15 days or more.
Hi Rehan. The issue that you’ll have is that it’s likely you’ll have to pay a Customs import duty for it to remain in Pakistan. Most countries allow a vehicle to stay in country for 12 months before you need to apply to register it as a Pakistani vehicle with local number plates etc. It’s at that point you’d pay Customs duty which could be very expensive. Do you have any friends or family over there that could ask that question as to what that rate might be? Photos taken within the last 6 months are best to take with you and they don’t need to be the same as in your passport.
