It has been brought to my attention that Anbernic released an update firmware to the RG35XX: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1HfGCxkratM_zYiYfGWCrHZ1AynO3hIwU
Now that I finally got the kid a PS5 for Christmas I'm gonna buy me one of these. The screen looks crisp & these classic games look amazing on it. What a great era/catalog of games!
After staying up late several days trying to get a hold of a Miyoo decided to order one of these, mainly because the form factor which looks great not having sticks and it seems to play fine what I'm interested to play.
I'm pleased with it, I might still get a Miyoo Mini but I'm getting seriously turned off at the price inflation that I'm seeing from resellers. Cheers!
I’m with both of you guys I would have gotten the MM if it was available but then I found this. I actually feel safe for getting this because it is actually a little bit bigger than the MM which I think I might get uncomfortable after a long time. Once it becomes available, I still might get an MM though it’s just too charming of a device.
I just got mine today and fired it up right out of the box. I’m enjoying so far and I do not have the skills to upgrade the OS to Garlic OS, so I’ll just keep it as is.
I recently got back into retro emulation and bought a Miyoo Mini and an RG35XX. They are both great choices! The build quality and feel in the hand is better with the RG35XX but the Mini has better firmware (for now) and the battery lasts longer (2000Mah). RG35XX is 2100Mah but drains quicker, maybe due to the larger screen? The Mini has a slight rattle but not as bad as other devices and both have a good build quality but the RG35XX has a more solid feel to it. They both emulate games about the same which is to say anything up to PSX but not every title on PSX runs well. And remember with no sticks some games just wont work. But NO STICKS and vertical position is by far the #1 reason to buy either device! Both will fit easily into a pocket but get a screen protector or a case, mini has a great hardshell case available via TP
I'm anxiously awaiting my RG35XX on order from AliE, should be here in another week or two ! I've been listening and reading all the reviews and it seems like you and Adin Walls have the fairest, least biased reviews of any I've seen. Everyone excluding you guys seem to think Anbernic committed a travesty by releasing the RG35XX as closed source and with a sucky limited OS. I think many are not fairly accounting the $50 price tag of this unit as well as being something that just works out of the box. Any kid or noobie to the retro gaming scene can just pick up and play it. Some seem to think Abernic rushed bringing out this device but I'm not so sure that's the case. Clearly they're marketing this device to gamers that are new to the retro scene or the ones that just don't want any hassles configuring the different consoles. Myself, i'm a retro handheld noob, however I've been running emulators for years on the PC. Honestly, and for the same reason i use an iPhone, I just want the device to work with little to no hassles. As GarlicOS matures, maybe I will migrate over to that or at least try it out simply because of the features it adds along with the great looking GUI. BUT atm it seems like the game playing experience is less than ideal vs the stock firmware. In a couple weeks time this may be a different story. But enough babbling, it seems there is a good variety of people in the retro handheld scene that have varying expectations. It's hard to please everyone.
Thanks for your inputs. I expect to get some flak for my opinions, but I do mean well. It's such a tight, beautifully knitted community that I am thankful for, as should every other members in it. However, sometimes it may come across as a wall'd garden cursing everything and everyone that do not share the sentiment. I'm sure it comes from the appreciation of the talents in said communities, but one does not negate the other. With that said, for the ones who don't want to deep dive into how to make this a better device, what you get, for the price you get it for, is really some of the best work Anbernic as put out. Enjoy your device my friend, and thanks again for engaging!
Yeah I don't see what's all the negativity about, it borders on nitpicking while putting the Miyoo on a pedestal forgetting that one has its own issues. The videos I have seen running on stock seem to do okay for the most part.
@@gustavovm491 The latest update adds some different screen ratios to some systems, a nice addition but I don't know that it's worth potentially losing save states for the ones who already started some titles.
I might, I have so many videos in the backlog ahahhaha. One thing I still have to get much better at is pace, I find I'm not producing fast enough for the ideas and videos I wish to make. Thanks for engaging!
I got the RG35xx last week and installed Garlic OS which makes it much better. However, I wish that it was taller. With my big hands, it feels somewhat awkward to hold. I have concluded that handhelds, especially vertical ones, are hard to control accurately. I think that a horizontal portable game system would work much better.
The 35XX is _well_ worth it in my view now that there's Garlic OS. I own both this and the Miyoo Mini and vastly prefer this. The Miyo Mini is just too dang small to be played for more than a few minutes. The market absolutely is oversaturated. So who is this for? I would say it is for people who have a particular fondness for the late GameBoy era - GameBoy Pocket and GameBoy Color. This device feels like them, just able to also run the console games of that time too! If that's NOT what you like, then the 35XX isn't for you.
Your post might have convinced me not to bother getting the Miyoo Mini, I'm sure it still would have it's use but I wasn't doing YT at the time so I'm starting to feel as though that ship has sailed and that I will grab whatever comes next. Oh and I might have to do a video about GarlicOS. Cheers! :)
@@GameTechTalk I own both devices. The Miyoo Mini does have excellent built quality and feel, but it feels much too small. You support the entire device just with your index and middle fingers while your thumbs cover the face buttons. This contrasts with the R5XX in that the walls of your hands support the sides of the device too, making there more to grab on and stablize the device. It's a big difference in the long run. The Miyoo Mini is a great device but it ultimately feels more like a large keychain than a handheld I reach for often. Since you already have a R5XX, I would also highly recommend you buy a few new Micro SD cards and flash Garlic OS. One thing you didn't mention in your review is that the SD card that comes with all these Chinese emulation machines are generic unbranded crap that can and will die prematurely at random. For this reason alone you should seek to buy MicroSD cards from brand names to replace the stock junk. The Garlic OS image file is about 4 GB, so you only need to get a 8 GB micro SD card for the system files. An 8 GB micro SD card is very very cheap these days. Then, on the second slot, go for whatever size for whatever roms you want. I went with a 128 GB, but that's way overkill. A 64 or heck, even 32 GB card is probably all you need. The other thing the Garlic OS firmware does is get the broken sleep function to work as a auto system shut down. The 35XX does not have a sleep function it seems. Now, you hit it it makes an automatic savestate of your game and then next time you power it up, boom, back into the same game. It's not quite the a true sleep mode, but it's as good as it will be.
Same here! I was wondering if anyone would notice that I'm pulling the secret attacks. Haven't touched this game in 20+ years and I still remember the combo (at least for the ice gun). Twisted Metal 2 needs a F2P online remaster.
Of course, but a “Sleep Mode” uses minimal power to keep the device on a “still state”, from which you can recover and carry on nearly immediately. Sleep Mode in this device is about as good as leaving the device opened. Sorry I didn’t make this more obvious through the words I’ve chosen. Cheers!
Well, I bought my 8 year old son the RG280V for Christmas and he loves it. Now, it's gotten me interested in getting a handheld and I'm considering the RG35XX after your review. Just to be clear, you mentioned that it doesn't cramp your hands. Is this correct?
That is correct, I don't cramp on it. I have average sized hands if that helps. I think smaller might get away better with it and larger might struggle a tad more but that's mainly cause it's a small form-factor unit.
That's exactly it, at 6:18 I show my "grip"? That's like 85% of the time how I hold the console and every now and then, I drop my indexes for the shoulder keys when the game requires them.
Thank you for your comment! It is greatly appreciated and looking forward to doing more of those. Until then, I'm wishing you a lot of good times with your RG35XX. Cheers!
I'm frustrated by its battery life. I have to charge the thing every now and then. It's ps1 display is beautiful but it burns the battery quickly. It only reaches almost 2 hours when I play ps1 games.
