I think that the intended message is that parents should try to find a happy medium or balance, between work and family. Unfortunately, it does not really get the message across, because one parent is the primary bread winner, and goes out getting his wife a job in the wrong way.

Now listen, as a non-Christian I only learned about this song and this movie back in 2014... I'm very sorry that Christians remember this song so well: I would have gone insane pretty quick

It’s super weird that the radio station in my area that plays Christmas/holiday songs nonstop every year the day after Thanksgiving to the midnight on December 26th never played Christmas Shoes at all until around 2014. Now it’s played once or twice a day during the Christmas season. Why did this song blow up in popularity so randomly?

Instead of talking about death or something super sad it just talks about one lone bartender giving money to someone on the street to get home for Christmas. It blasts my tear ducts every time man.
But, but how are you supposed to feel happy and grateful for what you have if you aren't being shown someone in a far worse situation? How can you enjoy christmas without thinking about a small orphan freezing to death?! (seriously, _fuck_ the story of the little match girl.)

I think what you're saying is the main problem with movies like this (aka movies that manufacture sadness) is that there are a bunch of deaths that are NOT earned and NOT meaningful: These manipulative deaths are cheap
Exactly, death needs to be meaningful and earned in media, otherwise it comes across as gimmicky or disrespectful to those who have lost loved ones.
This is LITERALLY the best movie ever.

Well, Long Kiss Goodnight is set during Christmas and I think that the Lords name comes up a few times.
If Kevin's taking requests for Christmas movies, I would request "How Sarah got Her Wings" which isn't a Christian movie (though it does have Heaven and Hell and angels), but it's weird and funny.

As someone whose parent died two weeks before Christmas years ago, I agree. The time is bittersweet enough without being melodramatic about it. Thus, my Christmas song is "Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg.

Oh and something else. If the kid got the shoes for his mom to wear in heaven why was she not buried in them? Did the boy actually save the shoes all those years just to put on her grave site or were they sitting there the whole time and nothing happened to them from being outside for all those years?
Because corpses are buried without shoes. It would appear he had to learn this the hard way. But I don't think that means they couldn't have still been buried with her. So yeah, it is weird that they just left the shoes by her headstone and they still look perfectly intact.

I was about 10 years old when my family and I first watched this movie and while we watched it I started asking my dad how much money I could make all around the United States by collecting pop cans.

I really love Lindsey Ellis's review of The Christmas Shoes, and I really looked forward to your opinions on it. I particularly liked your discussion about coping, laughing rather than crying. You don't need to feel guilty laughing at the absurd! And regardless of whether it's lachrymose or not, it's still absurd. This setup is so manipulative in the first place, and denies the nihilist and extremely non-inspiring core of it: that somehow a kid thinks he's going to make sense of his mother's death with a token object; instead of spending all the time he possibly can with her as she lays dying, he's standing in line buying shoes. I also love the Protestant work ethic shit worked in there: hey kid, develop your work ethic while your mother is dying, dammit!
If only she became a Christian after she got sick, then she could of lived.

Wait, the car mechanic is poor? Has anyone who wrote this ever take there care to the mechanic? They ain't poor. LOL :) I mean, wouldn't a landscaper be a better choice. That market is way more volatile. It could have rained a lot so he didn't get the money their use too. They fall onto hard times. Then it looks like it's going to be a mild winter. So he won't be able to remove as much snow as normal. Come on, this stuff ain't hard. :)
A mechanic can do well, financially, if they live in a large enough city - with car driving professionals - and if they own the business. If they are an employee , then they might get minimum wage or slightly more. But, probably not benefits.
According to indeed, $20.59 an hour. Yea, not raking in the cash, but not minimum wage. And I don't think he would be struggling. And they probably would have health insurance. I work for my dad in the HVAC field. We give our guys health insurance.
Also keep in mind, that figure may include people who just change tires and oil. It dosn't specify. My gut says somone who is in a small shop like that, who actually replaces and diagnoses problems on vehicles would earn $30-$40 an hour. Especially if they had votech training.
If you think or hire people that think a cappuccino machine is a car you’re not the best mechanic . Just saying perhaps that’s why he isn’t making money ? Not his profession but that he’s just horrible at it
I just want to see a parody video where the mom actually lives and recovers in the form of a Christmas Miracle and then she is given the shoes which are the most hideous looking pair of shoes ever. She tries so hard to pretend to like them and even humors her son by putting them on and he is so excited and proud. Meanwhile the mom thinks, “God? Why couldn’t you just let me die so that I didn’t have see these hideous shoes?”

And yeah. I hate the workaholic plot too. It's seriously disrespectful to hardworking dads/people (but it's almost always dads in the movies). After Mr. Banks in Mary Poppins, who may also have been the trope maker, nothing could top it or pluck on those heartstrings.

That trailer I keep seeing feels exactly the same as the trailers they make for the Greek/Egyptian mythology movies they put out at the beginning of every year now.
