Technically, this is really Part 4 of our Wall-Hanging Tool Chest build, but because I focused so strongly on waterborne finishes and HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure spraying), it received its own stand-alone title.
When I made this project in the Guild, I asked our members what type of finish they would like to see me use. The votes came in and the majority of folks wanted to see a waterborne finish applied via HVLP. So my finish of choice was General Finishes High Performance. I used the Earlex HV6900 to do the spraying and I was thrilled with the results. Even after a couple of year of use in the shop, the finish is still holding up very nicely!
This video serves as a nice introduction to the chemistry behind waterborne finishes, HVLP techniques and spray gun maintenance.

Found your video when I was searching on this topic. I used you tip on pre-raising the grain and it worked very well. Thanks for the great viseo.
This video changed the way I view and use my HVLP sprayer. I tried a water-borne clear finish on my last project and the outcome was excellent! The finish didn't need any thinning, and sprayed on perfectly. Drying time was quicker than I expected, and the lingering odor was minimal compared to the other solvent-based finish I normally use. The final finish (5 thin coats later) was very hard. Thanks for changing my mind and practices!
Nice video. Clear and concise. Not too long winded. Salient information covered. Should inspire and encourage non-experts to go ahead and experiment. One point I would add and emphasize is to never let the sprayer falter in its movement...in other words if you have the trigger depressed and there’s finish flowing from the gun you should be moving. If you think a spot has too little material on it, give it a minute or two to tack and hit it again. Thanks.

@jdrury Watch the video closely. You'll notice that when I'm actually spraying finish, the doors are no longer sitting next to the case.

Enjoyed that as usual. Interesting tip on the linseed oil, but if that amber was the look I was after, a coat of quick dry oil urethane or sanding sealer. 220 sand, vacume and then top coat with clear water base for durability and depth.

Thanks so much for this video. I like the tips and the thorough teaching. I had to create a paint booth inside my garage though after getting way too much 'dust & debris' on my finishes while painting outdoors.

It can definitely help Dan. The Earlex units really only give you two options for adjustment, fluid viscosity and tip size. And if the unit is low powered, you might have a harder time with the thicker-bodied finishes. So yes, I do believe upgrading is a good idea if you're having significant issues with the finishes you want to spray. Also, consider looking into the Fuji units as a higher quality alternative.

@TheWoodWhisperer That is good. It means that an oops to the lens is a whole lot less than a new lens.

I do HVLP on wood doors, all trim, bookcase, cabinet, etc, to automotive finish grade on standard job sites (no spray booth, fighting dust & debris and other contractors). You never raise the hewn with straight water and 1st sand is a choice between post-primer or 1st finish coat. Primer is the water bath that pulls up, grabs and brittles any hewn. Water is a wasted step. Never use a spray cup unit inside a small cabinet. Use a free gun for mobility w/ compressor.

@ArtisanWoodworker You can. As long as the BLO is fully cured you should be OK. The water-based finish might still raise the grain. And you might even consider putting on a sealer coat of dewaxed shellac before applying water-based, just to be safe.
I actually don't do much with paint so I'm not the best person to ask. I find the guys at Sherwin Williams or Frazee can usually point folks in the right direction for paints.
This very helpful and clear to follow, If I have to spray, I use Cellulose lacquer as this dries very fast as I to don't have a spray booth.

@materiasacra I actually do use a filter at all times just to be safe. So technically, the spotting was on the filter and not the actual lens. But I try to treat the filter as if is the lens. This video was filmed over a year ago so fortunately I have come up with some good solutions for filming myself spraying. :) But I like your idea! I'll have to give it a shot.
Love the video great job explaining everything 👍🏻 I also love the music 🤘🏻 sometimes when I spray the corners on the inside of a cabinet I use the circle fan I mark the volume knob for wide fan and circle so when I flip the tip I know how much material to use
Agreed. It's a good unit for the price range. But if you have $100 more in your budget, you can get a pretty significant increase in overall quality.
That is one killer back yard.
I always wear a respirator even when spraying outside. As for dust particles, that is definitely a concern but you do what you gotta do. A makeshift knockdown spray booth would be a nice upgrade for sure.
thanks, I am new to water base top coats. So you just put on the linseed oil wait 4 to 5 days to dry, then go straight to the water base top coat with out doing any further surface prep.
@ak99372 Well the real key is to apply it very thin. I usually dilute mine by about 50% with mineral spirits, wipe on, let it soak for 3-5 minutes, and the come back and wipe up all the excess. Then after several days, the finish is usually dry enough to work with. Temperature and humidity can slow the curing process down a bit so keep that in mind.
I would probably try to find a decent stain to bring the two woods into the same color family. Shouldn't be too hard to get them close.

@ShallowJam I haven't worked much with Bamboo but I imagine it responds similarly to wood. If your test area is rough to the touch then you should probably pre-raise. But I really don't know if bamboo exhibits the same grain raising properties as wood. Just rub some water in and you should be able to tell. But in terms of staining and clear coating, it should work quite well regardless of what system you use.

Thanks for the great videos used the one for the table saw sled and now used this one on HVLP and Water Bourne finishes.
Was un Happy with trying to get Perfection from Gloss Poly and being disappointed even tried using my HVLP from Rockler and still I was not Happy.
But With the Water Bourne I am as Happy as a PIG in the Mud Puddle Just learned to live with the Clear Semi Gloss finish though I am going to try some wax after it dries for a few days.

Really good video! I once finished some parts outside and little bugs started to land on the pieces and got stuck in the finish and that freaked me out ^^

I really appreciate your videos. I want to learn more about finishes and application of them on my various projects. I'm having horrible results from my finishing skills so far and want to get better. Maybe a spray gun will help but I need a spray booth.

Haven't used it much myself. But I think you might want to take a look at General Finishes Endurvar line. I have used the gloss version and it is pretty amazing.

When removing the nozzle, shouldn't the trigger be depressed to avoid the needle scoring the back of the nozzle?
GF Enduro-Var will darker wood as if it were an oil finish. I love the stuff. Get the look of oil, but the clean up of water! It's not cheap, though, about $90/gallon from Rockler.
+titanwr I have used Enduro-var on a whole house worth of cabinets and closets. I tested it on some high use knife blocks first. Pretty tough finish.
@scarmenl actually I always have a clear UV filter on at all times. So fortunately anything that gets on the "lens" is really just getting on the filter.
I don't know if they have a size for your camera but for a lot of cameras they have a clear filter lens to protect your cameras lens in situations where you are concerned that you might get something on the lens that might damage the glass.

Yeah that's pretty common. That's a bleeder style gun. That's how it is designed to work. Just make sure you direct it away from the work when not actually spraying.
Don't know the exact numbers, but I find any turbine to be loud enough to require ear protection. So they are all the same to me. :)

I have a question. you use an oil to get that lively look before you finish is with a water based coating. Doesnt that give problems with the attaching of the coat?

@conrad2001 Thanks. :) We are in the west valley area.
Only problem with adjusting the flow rate using the water to begin with, is that water will have a lot lower viscosity than most finishes and the flow will be different than what you're spraying.
What sort of psi did you have going to the gun using this product? Great video. I watched to see this info but you didn't mention it. Cheers.
Have a question. Shouldn't you only tighten the needle screw only after you have installed the tip to avoid damage to the needle?
+gary24752 Maybe. But I've never given it much thought and never damaged a needle. They're not really fragile. Just don't force it in and the needle should find it's way through just fine.

Hey Marc, what are your thoughts on Endurovar? I'm told it's more durable than HP and it supposedly gives an oil look like the board with boiled linseed oil. Just wanted to get your thoughts if it is actually better and if it does look like the board with oil?

When you demonstrated you giving your gun a "good shake" before applying the next coat of finish on your project i noticed a rattle in the can/gun, do you have bead or beads of some sort in it to aid in the mixing/stirring the finish as you are spraying?

@squidskunk Perhaps if I had a nice spray booth to finish in, but I'm spraying outside. Not sure it makes a bit of difference in my situation. Boy I sure to miss spray booths.....

a very well done video, thank you. i am a professional painter in BC and have just started using a Graco hvlp turbine. can you recommend some better quality latex for spraying trim in new homes that works well with HVLP? Also, for thinning i have used extender. my results so far have been disapointing.
After you raised the grain & sanded your project what method did you use to clean the sanding dust off of it prior to spraying the finish on the project?

To sand or not to sand between the coats. I've seen some that don't send between the coats.
I've seen some start the second coat on top of the first coat with a HVLP gun.
I need to do it indoor ( I have 3 panels 4x8 to spray), unfinished room with a window, what's the best setup for this.
Some people say that if gun is not used for 5 minutes it has to be cleanned.
My boards are stained, oil based, do I need to hit them with water and I am concerned that if I raise any grains I'd impact the stain coat.
Any tips would be welcome!
Question Refinishing oak baby changing table I found at thrift store. Question is what do you do when after you have sanded off all old finish and you find some red some white oak what do? Just run with it? use some kind of sealer to get it to finish looking the same? or just enjoy the added character? I know this is an older posting, so hoping you can answer. How heavy are your layers of spray? I am acutally using a turbine sprayer with Varathane water based polyurethane. I put on a very light layer initially and then went with a fairly thick second coat.

A bit OT but what respirator are you using here? It looks like a cartridge with a pre-filter attached also. It's pink like a 3M P100 but those are round and your's is the shape of a cartridge.
Did you move I couldn't tell what you were spraying was it light color our a clear coat been thinking about water base product s but I'm sure not sold yet !! ??
I'm currently finishing some bamboo french doors that I bought. As far as I can tell they are unfinished (water does not bead on them, and I hit a test patch with some stain and it seems to have absorbed fine) but I'm not sure what process to use with bamboo. Any advice? I don't know if I should be pre raising the grain, or how many coats of finish after my stain. (Waterborne stain)

Marc, I'm going to be spraying some mdf and pine (or pre-finished mdf, not yet decided) baseboard for a cake pop stand with an earlex 5500. What would you suggest for priming first and then for white top coat?
What about hitting my coffee table im finishing with Varathane Water Based Polyurethane Crystal Clear Semi-gloss with polishing paste wax or something will that bring a better look to it rather than just the poly by itself? Which the table is being stained with Slate color stain...
What brand and model turbine hvlp you are using ?

I've heard that HVLP guns are not good for water borne/based finishes. I am looking to purchase a General Pneumatic Gravity Feed HVLP spray gun set for finishing electric guitars, but again a instructional video said it isn't good for water based/borne. thanks for the video
SC86Canuck That harbor freight spray gun is $20 and is just fine, especially for learning. It’ll also spray water borne stuff just fine, as spraying depends on viscosity more than anything. I will say that the HF gun has a 1.4mm tip, which is a bit narrow for most consumer grade paint.
Just make sure you keep it clean, and if you clean it with water either make sure it’s completely dry before storage, or else run some mineral spirits through it first. If you leave parts of that gun soaked in water too long some will start to rust. It happened on mine.
Hey Wisp! You really shouldn't stick the gun needle into the gun before you fit nad tighten down the nozzle. If the needle goes just a little too far you'll ruin both parts. Fit and tighten the nozzle then insert and snug the needle gently into the nozzle. I have to say "GREAT TOOLS" I'm turning green all over and it's not just cause I'm Irish.
Why would a person want to put a water based finish over an oil finish? Is it for the hardness, durability, spray ability, or what of a water-based finish?
found your older video because I was looking for something on GF Enduro-Var water based in satin because I am thinking to use it for my kitchen cabinets that I'm staining myself. I bought them unfinished from a cabinet maker in Lancaster County, PA.
Have you used the Enduro-Var yet?
+Ruth Taylor I've used several times on kitchens I've built. I love the stuff! Just make sure your stain is very dry under it. I am pretty much exclusive with Sherwin Williams Alkyd wiping stain, and I give it a few days to dry before applying the finish and it's turned out perfectly each time.
+titanwr I finally used it Summer of 2014 and now I too love GF Enduro-Var :) a perfect satin finish. If I remember right, I did only 2 coats. We didn't have a chance to install the kitchen yet because of some unexpected happenings that halted our whole life since September 2014 :( but hopefully by 2016 we can get back on track. All the lower cabinets are done and lined up in our living room and a couple of them in our foyer. The 2 that are in our kitchen sitting in the spot they will be installed have held up great so far. Easy to wipe and keep clean with just a damp cloth and dry after wiping.
