UPDATE: a lot of people asking about the recent mold/water in my basement. At this point, our insurance is saying this falls under "Home Maintenance"... like replacing a leaking roof and may NOT be covered. We're still working to resolve the issue. THX.

Insurance gets you with mold too - they will only reimburse if the water was the cause of the damage, not the mold. So many loopholes.

I'm an insurance agent. Remember people if you do have a collection or "man cave" in your basement and are afraid of floods and/or water sewer backup they are excluded under normal renters or homeowners policies. Water sewer backup can usually be added to a policy for more coverage but floods are covered under a separate flood policy.

    • @Ytnzy250
      @Ytnzy250 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Excellent advice, seems almost prophetic as a year later some of his collection was indeed water damaged.
Wonder if he took out that separate water policy you mentioned.

  • @Bellthorian

I am new to the insurance industry so this video was very interesting fore me. I knew there was no way they could use scheduled personal property for the game room. Scheduled personal property is for high value single items that need to be insured for a specific amount. For example I just wrote a homeowners policy with SPP for a 28k engagement ring. All homeowners policies come with personal property protection in them, typically our are 50-75% of the homes value but you can increase that to higher limits for a few dollars more a month.
My only advice is to talk to your agent and make sure you have good sewer backup coverage. Without it, if the sewer backed up and you had 6 inches of water in your basement your homeowners insurance will NOT cover it. Another piece of advice is get everything off the floor a minimum of 6 inches. If you had to make a claim it will make the claims process easier.
Lastly and I hope I am not boring you is have to checked on flood insurance? I have no idea what level of risk you are at but if there was a flood and your gameroom was damaged your homeowners insurance plan will not cover it. Floods are always a specific named exclusion.

Disaster for me. 2015 I was moving I put my stuff into a storage locker in my city- Kamloops BC - . Which had a gate. and cameras all the important stuff. I got broken into. The operators were on vacation so they didn't know what day this happened. They refused to look at the camera footage. Police - were corrupt and asked me if I had serial numbers on my cd games? WTF! also told me they would not look at the camera footage because how can I prove which cardboard box was mine. Absolute disaster they took hundreds of games, accessories , all my video game figures, and my coin from the NYC nintendo store. I'll never see this stuff again and it would have been safer leaving this stuff in my backyard shed.

That's great that you have a backup camera solution. I have seen tons of malfunction on (mostly cheap) DVR for surveillance. Do check them from time to time. And have you tried testing your security, by intentionally triggering stuff?
In my working life, I have encountered some situations where the DVR wasn't recording, or had an error and stop after a certain day, so once a year (more or less) would be something I would do if I had cameras installed. Also using it once in a while, so that if (god forbid) something happend, I would be able to get the recording faster without messing something up. Murphy's law is a scary thing man.

The only thing insurance does is insures that you lose money. Take that money you would have spent on "insurance" and put it in the the bank or invest it smartly. Then if something actually does happen, you have all this money socked away to replace what you can't be without. WOW right?

Even if you don't own the place you live, you can get Renters Insurance that will cover your items and they do help you break down certain amounts ($1,000 for Health & Beauty Products / $3,000 for Jewelry / $5,000 for Electronics) but you can also add additional coverage to specific categories (so if you need to have $10,000 Electronic Coverage instead of $5,000 they can bump that up for just that category) and typically Renters Insurance is pretty cheap; basic plans can be as low as $150 per year depending on how much coverage you want.

I am a small collector as I am slowly growing a small collection of games, consoles, music CDs, cassette tapes, movie cassettes, vinyls and etc. and unfortunatly, I still don't have enough space in my room to put them all away properly. What sucks is that I lost my Gamecube's connection cables and game CDs too. Once I get a job, i'll save away some money for my growing collection and find ways to put them all away neatly.

Great advise! Personal property insurance is so important! You should be able to bundle it with either home or renters at little to no increase to your premium. Cannot recommend it enough!

It can even extend to your vehicle in some situations. Protect your shit! And inventory your goodies with a camera for proof. 👍

  • @progman965
    @progman965 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I used to be a claims adjuster. Your policy limit and your premium is based upon the total replacement cost of all your property. So when cateloging, be sure to indicate current replacement value of each item in your collection, since some will be worth much more than others. Update the values as they change so you have a recent, relevant cost list. If you have a loss, your insurance company will want to pay you the actual cash value (ACV) of any particular item, which is based on it's age, condition at time of loss. if you find an actual replacement, and the cost is more than what you were paid ACV, you can then make an additional claim for the different between the actual cost to replace it, and what the insurance paid up front for the ACV. Usually there is also a time limit on long you have to actually replace an item to get the full replacement cost. I would also encourage you to get an actual appraisal for your most valuable and rare items. A full video description along with a written inventory is what your claim adjuster will want to see and you'll get your settlement much faster. Hope that helps.

when we had the flooding in the uk a couple of years ago, and god decided to piss allover my sinclair collection, the insurance agent(loss adjustor) was impressed i had an inventory and videos of my stuff, i also had some receipts, this made claiming way easier, he came took a look at the water damaged stuff, and said there was no problem.
i was really impressed by the fact that he did not care about what could be salvaged, they just said total loss and made an offer which i took, he even said salvage what you can with some rare stuff it may be a case of repairing it, you may not find replacements.
the main thing is be upfront to start with, it pays dividends if you have to claim.

So, when i had a large collection (sold it a year and a half ago) I had a "named items" policy, i had to maintain a list of every single game, and photographic evidence... it ran about $15/mo for coverage of a 3000 game collection including arcades and hardware... the biggest thing to check on these policies tho is that they are for Direct Replacement not for Value... as most insurance companies will peg a "used videogame" at 2-5$ each... with direct replacement, they pay to buy a replacement in similar condition... so you get your game back...

This video is super informative! I'd like to also add that CLZ is an amazing inventory app that also does barcode scanning. It also allows you to select CIB, Cart only, or Cart and instructions only. It uses that, along with current pricecharting data and will give you an estimated value of your collection. This is what I'm using to insure my games. I think the app is $14, but it's well worth it. Peace!

I started to think about the risk of flooding, especially in case of basement. Now, it doesn't apply to me personally, but I just started to wonder if it would be feasible to install a pump or two in corner(s) of the room, and set them to start automatically when there's water on the floor. Then, the lowest shelves should be higher than where the pump(s) would keep the water level.
I mean, just having a detection for water damage wouldn't help to prevent the damage; it would be more a message saying "Water is rising. Your stuff will be gone in five minutes.". But if the speed in which the water would flow in in case of flood, could be assumed to be quite finite (no large gaps in and between walls, floor and windows), a pump might be able to prevent the water rising higher than the intake of the pump. (A second pump could be there in case the other wouldn't start -- after possibly sitting a few years unused. I suppose the things to be considered would be the price of pump(s), how much space they would take, and what's the chance of losing power when there's flood.

As someone who's had things stolen from family members (60s Mosrite, Epiphone and Gibson Guitars) I can attest to the value of insurance. If someone wants to steal things from your house you cant stop them, they will learn your routine and slip in and out detected or not. Same thing for mother nature, you may have a 5ft levee around your home but you'll wake up to 6 ft of water at 2am one day (also happened).

Also, take pictures of your collection with yourself in the picture. Date them too. That's how I shore up my cataloging approach. And keep copies of receipts or Ebay invoices if you get retro games from there

My brother has a very large pinball collection - the largest private working collection in his state - and he set up his home owners insurance policy to cover it. That's good considering it has to be worth somewhere around a quarter million. It's all cataloged with pictures and so on.

My Game Collection is an awesome Android app. It also does Amiibo, Skylanders, and hardware. If something obscure is missing they are good at adding it in after contacting them. They also add new features quite regularly. I've been using the app for 2-3 years now.

Hmm. It’s important to make sure you find a carrier that protects the actual value of your game collection. I have a feeling you are only protected for whatever it would cost to replace those items today less depreciation which would put you at a major loss.

dogs are a double edged sword when it comes to electronics. they can save your stuff from theft but if it is a shedder then the fur could also damage things like a console. a lot of xbox 360s with the rrod that i have opened were covered in pet hair on the inside

I don't really have enough games to catalog, but I DO have a couple thousands dvds and blu-rays. I use a program called DVD Profiler to keep track of them all. It shows all kinds of info about the movies and shows as well as HQ shots of the front and back covers. I also keep a text file list of all of my movies and shows, which includes how many discs there are as well as how many titles there are and for what occasion I got the movie or show.
I also keep a filmaf.com account which keeps track of my movies...though they don't have every single one...which is a shame.

The trouble with insurance companies is that they will almost never give you what it's worth.
I had a long talk with my home owner's insurance agent and was told that they will pay what it costs to replace the games in question. Now the problem with this is that they will often look these values up on eBay.
The trouble comes, for example, if you have a mint/CIB copy of Donkey Kong Jr. Math for the NES (which often sells for over $2,000), but they would assume that could be replaced with a loose copy of the same game, which often sells for around $100.
I was told they don't treat factory sealed games any differently than opened copies. And again, if you ever need to file a claim, keep in mind it's their job to save as much money as possible for their company. It's all very shady and you will never get what it's truly worth.

I go with USAA since I am retired military and I have never had one issue with claims. We have had Renters Insurance through them for the last 5 years which covers $30,000 in personal property and a Valuable Personal Property policy that is separate which covers things like Jewelry, Cameras, and Laptops. Things that you are very expensive and won't hit your renters insurance if you had to make a claim. I have had to make claims, we live in a Hurricane Area and were affected by both Matthew in 2016 and Irma in 2017. I have never had any issue with making a claim, just realize if you make a claim, it will go against your policy and could raise your premium. It can even make it harder for you to get future coverage.
For example, we have had a 4 claims in 3 years 2 of those claims involved the Hurricanes, one involved my wedding ring getting damaged, and another one involved a very bad storm that knocked out our power for days and power surged some of our stuff. Granted, all of these claims were small claims. However, we went to go get Homeowner's Insurance because we are fixing to move out of here on the 23rd into our first house (and I will finally have a GAME ROOM!! SO EXCITED!!). Just to give you a clue of what claims can do to your insurance premiums and getting coverage in the future.
Our Homeowners Insurance is going to cost us $180 a month!! There is no way around this until those claims fall off our insurance. Just keep it in mind that you only want to use your insurance, even for very valid reasons as sparingly as possible. Of course they do not tell you this. So lets say your game room burns down. you put in some massive claim for $100k or whatever it costs to fix it. Good luck with that premium and it could potentially screw you if you go to move and want to get a new policy. With us, USAA was the best possible rate we could get out of any other insurance company when it comes to homeowners. Nobody else wants to deal with us and we are technically uninsurable outside of USAA. SO BE CAREFUL!

You may think it may never happen to you and hopefully it don't but you need to be insured, I wasn't so I am out a lot of money and the years I spent collecting all these items.

I don't know if my games are bad or my console is bad but I think it's my games mainly because they been so long in storage...I'm hoping it's not disc rot as I'm starting to realize that is a thing.

It would eat me alive if something happened to your collection or any other gamers collection for that matter. It is a statistical fact that those of us who are gamers share stronger bonds with each other, than the members of any other hobby group. I have friends and family in the law enforcement and investigative professions, I would implore them to get involved in tracking down leads. I bet you would be blown away by the effort your subscribers and friends would put forth to help you recover what was taken from you, the person who did it would be sleeping with a proverbial "one eye open" I doubt the thieves would be able to sell one single item of yours, without tipping off someone you knew.

As a more general tip one thing I know that people seem to overlook is the concept of renters insurance. Not just in the concept of gaming but overall. Most people I know that have been robbed while living in an apartment didn't know it was a thing. Its much like home owners insurance but you are only paying to protect belongings and not the property itself (the owner of the unit would be paying for that). You can specify what amounts your stuff is worth so while I doubt places have much in the way of "gaming" they will typically have the more general electronics category. Its also fairly inexpensive. Also for insurance purposes they typically like to have proof of ownership. Receipts are the top but in the case of alot of retro games that's not always a possibility. Photos and video are the next best thing. Having a list is also good but its the bottom of the list.

Was going to ask you this question myself as although my collection is a fraction of yours it's still a concern. In my last house(which was before i had a games room or much of a collection) we got broken into numerous times. Not sure how different insurance is in the UK to the USA but there was something that worried me whereby you could be covered for £60,000 but only a fraction of that for "high risk items". They define a high risk item as basically anything a thief could easily walk out with and makes special reference to small electrical goods like consoles. I'm not entirely sure why the £60,000 in the policy would have such limits as if it's not easy to walk out with they aren't going to take it but ended up getting a more expensive policy to cover more for high risk items. That could easily have been a major issue if i'd not spotted it and anything happened...

An inventory barcode scan of my nes Stack Up will not reveal that it’s sealed, nor will it show that my Magical Chase is complete and dead mint. You really have to do the work and catalogue box/docs cart with condition, and then at least take a video or some photos of your games on the shelves.
