I remember my Mom bought me the top loader NES as a surprise when it came out because she thought it was a Super Nintendo. I already had an original NES, but despite her mistake, getting the top loader was great because my original NES was pretty much dead at that point - I didn't even care that it wasn't an SNES, I was just glad to be able to play Nintendo games again.
Got an original NES from the goodwill for $4, bought a power cord, an aftermarket controller and Zelda 1 for it, went home, plugged it in, Zelda started right up. I also bought SMB1 & R.C Pro-AM as well and they both start up flawlessly which in total I payed about $40ish for everything. Now I using TH-cam as a buying guide for what other games I should get for it :D I was happy it started at all lol
Yeah, i seen that they didn't wanna renew it because he became heavy weight champion and they would have to pay more. Also ( I can't remember her name) but, his first wife ecused him of being violent at home in that Barbra walters interview.
Id beat him all the time as a kid. But im sure i played it daily. My friends would all say pop in punch out.show everyone you can beat him. I always would.years later i tried.no luck haha

i would absolutely recommend MegaMan 2! this game is considered to be one of the greatest 2D platformers ever made and the soundtrack... oh boy the soundtrack is brilliant!
I don't get why people don't like TMNT 1, yes it'd hard but it's an amazing game that makes u use lots of skills and have to use all 4 turtles to get past certain levels
Because people go into it expecting a typical beat-em-up where they just mash the attack button to kill everything, they don't realize there is a strategy to it and things you need to know. The people who complain about the difficulty never seem to know how the mechanics work and that each turtle actually does have different strengths and weaknesses - they just know that Donatello does higher damage so they think everyone else is pointless, then they can't understand why they're getting their ass kicked by enemies he isn't able to hit.
I would say because some of these enemies aren't even in the show Let's not forget the infamous "you can just walk over it?" part were there's a gap between two platforms in the 2nd level lol
If I were you, and I'll do this in the near future, I'd buy compilation cartridges/discs simply because the original carts/discs are too expensive and hard-to-find on their own.
If you like Ninja Gaiden, I highly recommend the Deadpool hack that came out. It's amazing. Hacked off the first Ninja Gaiden, changed cut scenes, slightly different level design, 2 new levels, different alternate weapons. You get to keep your weapons, and switch between them. Game is awesome
Barnacules Nerdgasm I am a huge fan of Metroid as a series, however I don't think the original is very good, as nearly every single room is identical and there's not a way of knowing where you are going and it feels like just luck that you'll go the correct way.

You hit the nail on the head. The thing I hate hate HATE about modern gaming are 1. Updates after updates after updates, 2. Insufferably long cinematic sequences that you can't skip, 3. You can't just hit start and play the game. I find it difficult just to get into playing my PS4 or XBox One S on a regular basis because of this issue. Video games have always been a passion of mine (at one point around 1998 or so I think I had about every modern video game system that was any good except the Turbografx 16 and NEO GEO). NEO GEO was always the one system I wanted but I never could afford. Now, I have the Nintendo Wii U, PS4, and XBox One S. So, I stumbled upon this video in my renewed passion for video games and plan on rebuilding my collection from scratch. Man I should have kept my Sega Saturn! Oh, well....
MJR videos are the comfort food of video gaming.... always come back. Their mention of Tetris was apropos to the recent history\publicity. These games are timeless.
My ten NES Must-Haves 1) Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt 2) Super Mario Bros 3 3) Contra 4) Duck Tales 5) Tetris 6) Blades of Steel 7) Double Dragon II The Revenge 8) Final Fantasy 9) Vice Project Doom 10) Super Dodgeball You guys had some great picks as well!
Adam's family presents Fester's quest is amazing. Also, silent service. If you play ROMs the earthbound prototype for nes is amazing I have it on my Wii via homebrew
I'm so glad Final Fantasy was on that list. I found my old cartridge a few weeks ago and am working through it again now. I can't believe how good it still is.
Capn Cummings Hell yeah, me, and my 2 brothers use to play that one all the time along with Blades of Steel. which are the 2 best sports games on the system in my book.
TMNT series , Ninja gaiden series, Gun-Nac , Contra series, legend of zelda series, Chip n dale rescue 1and 2, Shatterhand, Shadow of the ninja ect ect.
This popped up under recommendations went into my garage after and pulled out my original NES. I keep it in the original box with Longs Drugs receipt taped on it from 1988 it’s faded. My kids “ what is that thing? I told them this is what I would rush home from school to play with. Life seemed so more peaceful and simple then. Glad I came across this video.

yea they r i like batman nes i think i remember renting it back in the day and me and my cousins woiuld play it contra super mario bros 3 and 1 are also good classis nes games
Derpurs Machinest i think youre talking about the strain relief and ive never seen one on a first party controller either, it must be a knockoff or cable replacement
Gillian Seed yeah exactly, forgot the proper name of it. its definitely a knock off third party controller. not sure if anyone is dumb enough to play with a controller upside down, but apparently i appear to be
I friend remember I came in and NES was all setup on Christmas morning on a black and white TV. Took my mom FOREVER to jump over the first hole. But she did it and it was such a great memory. My mom knew how important it was in my life the games so she took them up to bond with me
I agree with this list 100% I for sure would include Kid Icaris and maybe marble madness for overall game play( Not my favorites but good games) However both fun gameplay
while a cool video, I wish you'd discussed pricing. I've seen Zelda and Metroid on ebay for about 20 bucks each, and thought that was on the high side -- UNTIL I went to a store and they had Zelda for 40 bucks and Metroid for almost 30
+artao5 - Discussing specific pricing on a video like this is tough...because prices fluctuate. You watched this video TODAY but we actually shot it back in August of 2015!!
I've been collecting NES and Sega Saturn games for about 3 years and SNES and N64 games for about a year. In the short time I've been collecting, I've seen NES prices especially increase, Saturn not so much. NES collecting is experiencing a surge in popularity again and it's getting tough to find games for purchase in the wild outside of marked up eBay auctions.
RetroR0bbie I had plans on mentioning Double Dragon 2 as it's the only game worth playing on a NES Max as the turbos are in sync and you can do that knee move over and over. In the interest of time, it was dropped. :(
Wow! What a library the NES had! There were so many classics. Awesome picks! If I had an honorable mention, I would choose Tecmo Bowl. I remember all of those tournaments my friends and I used to have...the trash talk....last second wins.... Great times! What a fantastic system! :D
Our company repairs old game consoles, and we have a store in the front selling retro. Anyways, the red blinking light of death means that the lockout chip has gone out. You need to find the chip (on the bottom right) with CIC and U10 above it (the only chip with 2 capacitors under it, only 3 caps on the board in total, so it's not difficult to locate) count four pins over, starting from left and count right. The fourth pin needs to be pulled off of the chip, or simply snipped and no longer making the connection to the board. Works every time, hope this helps.
I cringed pretty hard when you recommended getting a new pin connector. Reform the pins, and they'll last another 30 years. Get new ones, and they'll be mangled within a year.
-Mike Tyson's Punch Out became Punch Out because of the contract running out, not because of his "trouble" -R.C. Pro Am is one of the best games on the system you can get, and it's ~$5 -'Metroidvania' makes me die a little inside every time I hear it
Back to the Future While it was a matter of the contract running out, his troubles made it an easy decision for nintendo not to renegotiate their contract with him, as they no longer saw him as a person they wanted to be associated with.
Actually the best thing to do is to mod the system with this kit (I forget it's name) but it basically replaces the cartridge bay with one that doesn't go down.
How is crystalis not on your list MJ...That game today is still my second fav rpg of all time. The first is ff7 so that realy speaks volumes when a nes game is right by that.. If you ever find a copy snatch that thing up and play it. to be honest it takes Zelda to school..
My OG NES had loose pins as well, I straightened em up myself, it's working now, but you don't even have to push the cartridge down for it work, just insert it, not even completely and it'll work.
Yessssss!!! Shatterhand is awesome....another game I loved as a kid in early 90’s which I played not so long ago was Time Lord, it’s not the best but as a kid I loved it!
What a great episode. What a great guest. You overlooked Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat or Ivan (Ironman) Stewart's Super Off Road... four-player capability...my first parties that were loud...not music...people screaming also that Olympic track game with the pad on the floor what a laugh watching people compete in that game yeah, Zelda #1
I realise this video was made before the public release, but ANYONE with the Front Loader NES should really install the Blinking Light Win by Arcade Works. My NES only worked about 15% of the time, before the Blinking Light Win. $35 forever fix.
is it just me or does it feel like this guy needs a beard? it's just his face. it requires a beard. he doesn't look right without one. maybe even a bushy lumberjack beard.
Put lots of work into video prep and spend your free time recording just so people can comment on your appearance. Why y’all gotta be so silly? Let people live.
kaiser avm I do need the continues though but that game is such muscle memory now I could do it in my sleep :D Maybe I'll do it on my channel as a challenge!
Here's a legit recommendation - if you can find it: Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers. Amazing 2-player simultaneous gameplay in an NES platformer without relying on split-screen. Possibly my favorite Disney product to this day. Revolutionary for its time, and challenging but not too difficult. Even more fun if you were familiar with the RR TV series.
Me and my brother were fighting over the NES and yanked it from the shelf in the basement, dropping about six feet onto concrete directly on the front right corner. We thought we broke it, but it only took a chip out of the corner and it still works to this day, 27 years later. They were super durable machines and made all subsequent consoles seem like they were built out of paper mache.
Metal Jesus, I literally just watched this. Hopped on Snapchat to check a message, and a snap ad passed. And the Ad showed the dodgeball game you and john just mentioned!!! Mind blown, insane... Glitch in the matrix 😂

stratogustav what about Bad Dudes?
Actually in real life the battle of midway was in 1942 after pearl harbor in 1941 not 1943 sorry just had to say it
No Little Nemo on that list?
I think Super Mario Bros is a Must Have, Donkey Kong Classics, Duck Hunt, Pro-Am, Q-Bert, Duck Tales, Any Megaman (i loved megaman 4), , Double Dragon
Karo Bros Z I grew up with duckhunt
damn i forgot about duck tales...classic
Chip and dale was fun too with 2 players :)
No Double Dragon 2? I still play this game religiously lol
Good list in general.
civoreb
Right? One of my all time favs
I have a copy I have to fix it but I look forward to playing
yes! I played the shit out of part one as well
You hit the nail on the head.
Super Dodge Ball.. The first used game I ever bought from FuncoLand.. It's awesome
tekguru8 FuncoLand! I miss that place.
I miss the prices of those days. Nes games are just stupidly priced online now.
I loved that you included castlevania 3 Draculas curse it's one of my favourite games
What about Jackal? I played the crap out of that game back in the day.
Steve DellaPenna just beat jackal today, final boss is hard as hell!!
My ten NES Must-Haves
1) Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt
2) Super Mario Bros 3
3) Contra
4) Duck Tales
5) Tetris
6) Blades of Steel
7) Double Dragon II The Revenge
8) Final Fantasy
9) Vice Project Doom
10) Super Dodgeball
You guys had some great picks as well!
A favorite of mine is Rygar. I always find myself going back to that game.
Welcome! Take a rest to regain your strength.
There was WAY too much to talk about, but tried to keep it around 20 minutes.
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Thanks again for helping with this video John. You rock!
+MetalJesusRocks hey man, have you played castlevania. : lords of shadow ?
MetalJesusRocks Fester's quest and silent service. Total gems
Adam's family presents Fester's quest is amazing. Also, silent service. If you play ROMs the earthbound prototype for nes is amazing I have it on my Wii via homebrew
Good Solid list. I'd sneak a Mega Man game in there somehow. Maybe as game 10-A. Good work guys.
Kacy DaGameNerd Mega Man 2 was high on that list for me, just behind Metroid.
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Mega Man 3 is my favorite Mega Man game and I'd recommend it but Mega Man 2 is good as well :) both good games.
I'd like to see some more vids with you and Riggs. I know he's been doing his own stuff but you guys work well together I think.
so glad you mentioned super dodgeball, it is so much stupid fun and a personal favorite of all time
I'm so glad Final Fantasy was on that list. I found my old cartridge a few weeks ago and am working through it again now. I can't believe how good it still is.
I'm more of a Dragon Warrior fan, but both games are really good.
Tecmo Super bowl is a must buy. Even non sports fans can love this game.
Capn Cummings Yeah everytime they mentioned sports games and were about to reveal the game I was hoping for Tecmo Bowl.
Capn Cummings I agree! I don't care for most sports games, but sure played me some Tecmo Super Bowl!
agreed techmobowl was awesome
Capn Cummings Hell yeah, me, and my 2 brothers use to play that one all the time along with Blades of Steel. which are the 2 best sports games on the system in my book.
I prefer Ice Hockey but to each there own.
Great video. John needs waaayy more subscribers than he currently has
***** I'm new to the TH-cam game so I'm crawling slowly. Happy with what I have, though. Always love the feedback.
Love your profile pic
Thanks!
TMNT series , Ninja gaiden series, Gun-Nac , Contra series, legend of zelda series, Chip n dale rescue 1and 2, Shatterhand, Shadow of the ninja ect ect.
ADI Domi I’ve got Shatterhand and saw online it’s worth like $70
This popped up under recommendations went into my garage after and pulled out my original NES. I keep it in the original box with Longs Drugs receipt taped on it from 1988 it’s faded. My kids “ what is that thing? I told them this is what I would rush home from school to play with. Life seemed so more peaceful and simple then. Glad I came across this video.
Great list! Even though I saw this video 5 years late, I still appreciate the fact that you guys made Super Mario 3 as the first pick! It has been my favorite game ever! You rock!!!
Megaman 2 and Batman are two really awesome games.
yea they r i like batman nes i think i remember renting it back in the day and me and my cousins woiuld play it contra super mario bros 3 and 1 are also good classis nes games
I've got to go with Mario 2 as being my favorite Mario game on nes.
@Ray Lewis Mario 2 on nes, Mario world on snes, New super mario bros on wii, and mario deluxe on switch.
Weird I have my original Nes controller and they don't have the cord hanger at the top of the controller...never seen that
Derpurs Machinest Maybe you're playing it upside down :)
Derpurs Machinest i think youre talking about the strain relief and ive never seen one on a first party controller either, it must be a knockoff or cable replacement
Gillian Seed yeah exactly, forgot the proper name of it. its definitely a knock off third party controller. not sure if anyone is dumb enough to play with a controller upside down, but apparently i appear to be
I noticed the strain relief too. The controller itself looks pretty legit, though, so it may just be a raplacement cable.
I’m very new to this community but these two are a couple of my favorites. This was 6 years ago? Wow
+Jason Jewell and chip and dale
+Jason Jewell And of course Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde!
downscale I loved Legacy of the Wizard when I was a kid. Never beat it but sure had a ton of fun.
Jason Jewell dont forget donkey kong and classic super mario bros the top
while a cool video, I wish you'd discussed pricing.
You watched this video TODAY but we actually shot it back in August of 2015!!
true ... prices in general seem to have gone up drastically since I last checked a couple years ago.
Thanks :)
I've been collecting NES and Sega Saturn games for about 3 years and SNES and N64 games for about a year. In the short time I've been collecting, I've seen NES prices especially increase, Saturn not so much. NES collecting is experiencing a surge in popularity again and it's getting tough to find games for purchase in the wild outside of marked up eBay auctions.
found a legend of Zelda complete in box at my locals for $80, it was a score.
Carlos Cordova
CIB? that's nice :O
solid list. I probably would have double dragon 1 or 2 in there as well
RetroR0bbie I had plans on mentioning Double Dragon 2 as it's the only game worth playing on a NES Max as the turbos are in sync and you can do that knee move over and over. In the interest of time, it was dropped. :(
I dont need no max to beat that game :)
RetroR0bbie oh hell ya I have that one my dad use to play it on the arcade console
I just took mine out of storage where it's been for 25 yrs, and I hooked it up and it still works. :)
Same. I just hooked up my 1988 NES in 2024 and it works.
Lol, that miniature Atari and game variation on the opening segment was amazing.
my personal favorite games are:
1. Duck Tales
2. Legend of Zelda
3. Legacy of the Wizard
4. Donkey Kong Jr.
5. Duck Hunt
ninja gaiden ? Shadow of the ninja ? Chip n dale rescue ? Bugs bunny ? TMNT ? Gun-Nac ? Shatterhand ? ect ect
MetalJesus: "Oh that's right!" **has no idea what he's talking about** ;)
Super dodge ball looks just like River City Ransom on NES
Do one of these for GENESIS/ SEGA CD! =D
TnVGaming im still waiting for genesis
No NES MAX controller?
I love the Max Controller.
I cringed pretty hard when you recommended getting a new pin connector. Reform the pins, and they'll last another 30 years. Get new ones, and they'll be mangled within a year.
-Mike Tyson's Punch Out became Punch Out because of the contract running out, not because of his "trouble"
-R.C. Pro Am is one of the best games on the system you can get, and it's ~$5
-'Metroidvania' makes me die a little inside every time I hear it
Back to the Future I agree with you on R.C. Pro Am, that game was amazing. Totally forgot about it!
Back to the Future i agree, better to refurbish the OEM ones and pop the pin on the ten chip to get rid of blinky screen
AH dude! @17:51. Classic. Great video dudes.
Dudes, I remember playing Super Dodge Ball with my buds till the break of dawn
Ergonomics are for poor people! I say we bring back square controllers for every console! IT SHOULD BE LAW!
Bubble bobble!
How is crystalis not on your list MJ...That game today is still my second fav rpg of all time. The first is ff7 so that realy speaks volumes when a nes game is right by that.. If you ever find a copy snatch that thing up and play it. to be honest it takes Zelda to school..
5:45, no you dont wan this, you want a famicon with converter everything the top loader us has plus av ports.
My OG NES had loose pins as well, I straightened em up myself, it's working now, but you don't even have to push the cartridge down for it work, just insert it, not even completely and it'll work.
No Mega Man? BLASPHEMY!
You know a really great game that nobody ever talks about? Shatterhand. Excellent little action platformer.
***** Mega Man 2 was 12 on my list, right behind Metroid :( But any Mega Man deserves a spot in any list!
Yessssss!!! Shatterhand is awesome....another game I loved as a kid in early 90’s which I played not so long ago was Time Lord, it’s not the best but as a kid I loved it!
No R.C Pro Am???
StarTropics I and StarTropics II: Zoda's Revenge? :(
What a great episode. What a great guest.
You overlooked Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat or Ivan (Ironman) Stewart's Super Off Road...
four-player capability...my first parties that were loud...not music...people screaming
also that Olympic track game with the pad on the floor
what a laugh watching people compete in that game
yeah, Zelda #1
I realise this video was made before the public release, but ANYONE with the Front Loader NES should really install the Blinking Light Win by Arcade Works. My NES only worked about 15% of the time, before the Blinking Light Win. $35 forever fix.
is it just me or does it feel like this guy needs a beard? it's just his face. it requires a beard. he doesn't look right without one. maybe even a bushy lumberjack beard.
Put lots of work into video prep and spend your free time recording just so people can comment on your appearance. Why y’all gotta be so silly? Let people live.
You're the cult expert!
Hey, it's not our fault the dude looks like a thumb.
@@JakeIsSucks yeah he would look cute with one
I can beat Contra with the 3 lives given. I'm a Boss :D
that is a feat indeed Mizzah Tee =)
kaiser avm I do need the continues though but that game is such muscle memory now I could do it in my sleep :D Maybe I'll do it on my channel as a challenge!
Mario Maker will give us a real challenge ^.^
+Mizzah Tee Wait you one of the Contra bosses playing? Which boss are you? j/k
Nice, those are definite braggin rights
mauigio lol thanks
Owns 4,000 games has played 60 of them.
Thank you guys so much! I just bought an Nes and I already have 10 great games.
Thumbnail creeps me out
I wish I didn't sell my Nes and Snes because they're still better than all the modern consoles 🎮💕😓
They are going cheap on ebay
There’s a million ways to play those games nowadays
Hey Metal Jesus haven't seen Drunken Master Paul in a while. How has he been? Hope everything is ok with him.
Michael Tse He was on his last video!
Check out last weeks video. I think you'll enjoy it :)
he is dead
Who's dead
+POOTIS MANN i have a felling that you are funny
