Yes, but how good of a carpenter was he? Got all these stories about his life and accomplishments that have been told and published for hundreds of years, but where's the story about that amazing wall cabinet he installed in Mary's bedroom? No "Jesus makes the most beautiful end tables" paragraph hidden away in anything that I've read. I've always taken it as meaning that he was actually a pretty crappy carpenter that like, put up shelves at awkward angles so stuff fell off, or tables with crooked legs. He'd apply for jobs to help build houses and the foreman would say, "Nah, we're kinda fully staffed right now, sorry. Thanks for that trick with the water though, guys appreciated it."

I’d recommend some blackout blinds or curtains for the windows, I have blackout curtains in my game room and they let very little light into the room even on a bright sunny day

Those display stands from RoseColoredGaming look really cool. Those Phillips Hue lights are definitely a great choice for smart lighting. They are expensive, but I think it's worth it if you're really into RGB. There's nothing wrong with Ikea furniture. I like how simple and to the point they are. You know, it would be cool if there was a company that could make shelves that are dedicated for storing games. Definitely look into that UV film for your windows.

Suggestion for the Led lights, grab some L shaped frosted acrylic LED diffuser lengths and tack it around the RGB strips, that will hide the led strip and give it a really cool glow.
To anyone pondering the IKEA kallax shelves(the cube sectioned ones) this is a popular storage solution in the vinyl record collecting community, these shelves regularly store record collections jam packed(one cubicle of records is much heavier than the equivalent of games in 1 cubicle), so despite them being particleboard, they are very sturdy as long as you put them together right and do not set up the shelf where the supports/dividers are running the wrong way. I use these shelves for my records and one for my console collection and it works and looks great as long as you can figure out a good cable management solution.
Regarding your IKEA shelves, this is why I got the Billy bookcase for my games, because the shelving allows you to customize, and you can purchase extra shelves to fit them all in one place, rather than the giant holes seen in some set shelves like yours. But at the end of the day, it’s all up to you.
Great video, MJR! You should consider some kind of covering for the window - whether it be curtains or something else to block out the light during the day when you want the room as dark as it can be.
A random thing about your shelving, I have limited shelving space myself, so the shorter CD jewels and handheld games are best double stacked. a little trick I learned was to put a couple pieces of cardboard that span the entire shelf width but are an inch or so less deep than the games. This is helpful for easily being able to get a finger in and pull out games on the bottom and prevents the games on the top from dropping into the bottom when you pull out the game below it. Another trick I used for a while then abandoned was using cardboard spacers to hold up the cardboard separating the rows. this makes it even easier to slide out the bottom row of games because they aren't taking any of the weight from the row above it.

So, after watching your videos on the new gameroom, i decided to add the rope LED to my own gameroom! Those LEDs are amazing and i love that you can control them from your phone or tablet. I highly recommend adding these for a low budget addition!
About the possibility of adding film to your windows. I've worked third shift for years so sleeping during the daytime is pretty normal for me. I purchased a Two-Way film for my bedroom windows that give it a slight dark tint (think like reflective sun glasses) to help keep the full strength light from entering my room. It was pretty cheap on Amazon too; think I got a roll that was like 48" wide by 120" long for around $35. Was able to do three big windows in my bedroom and still have plenty left over. I'm not the handiest of handy-men in the world, but I found it pretty simple to do myself.

I don’t play or collect retro games, but I find your videos quite enjoyable. I think what I like best is the cast of characters you surround yourself with. You all seem like genuine friends. That’s why I think you should add some game night videos. Invite your crew over to break in the new game room, and videotape the fun.
If you ever want to step up the shelving without spending a fortune, consider IKEA "Billy" bookcases. They are reasonably cheap and fully adjustable. In addition, you can get glass shelves and glass fronted doors. Adam Savage uses these for his own collection, and uses led strips on the inside of the doors for a great visual effect. It also really cuts down on the dust.
An option to avoid sunlight damage would be to buy blackout curtains. I live in Alaska where in the summer it's light out still at 10pm. They are life savers for sleeping as well as gaming.
Hey MetalJesusRocks - I used to store my games, DVDs, and Blur-rays in those Ikea shelves. As a suggestion, build a riser so that you can have two rows. The riser will elevate the second row of games and allow you to place another row in front of it. This also allows you to fit more games on 1 shelf than you currently have on it. Hope that helps. :)
I highly recommend the tinting film. On top of UV protection it can help temperature regulation quite a bit, especially on bigger windows and their directional orientation.
You can buy rolls of that film to put on windows. They can also block people from seeing inside at a distance. It works like a mirror on the outside and a regular window on the inside. My dad bought a few rolls and they work great for keeping uv light out of the house and we live in AZ so it’s pretty good.

For your game collection these are what i've used go to The Video Shopper and look under FIXTURES & DISPLAYS > Wood and Other Slat Displays > "Hq" Custom Wall Unit (Starter) these are what blockbuster used on the walls of their stores, they are awesome and relatively affordably priced... they are great and will hold up to putting cases "end out" and being full... they also have solid backs and are great for covering windows and keeping UV out...
I have the same ikea shelves but I bought the drawers for them. They hold two rows of most game boxes in each cubby hole. Genesis, Saturn, OG PS1 boxes and any larger special edition games don't fit but any standard DVD/Blu ray style case fits great, as well as NES, Snes and N64 boxes. The only catch is obviously your games aren't on display, but the upside is it would also solve your UV light issue (and in my case tiny fingers covered in peanut butter that like to play with anything they can get their hands on). And since It's Ikea, you can customize to your liking. Mine the lower levels are drawers full of games and the higher levels are left open for games that don't fit and statues and stuff.
I don't know if you came up with a solution for your blinds yet but blackout curtains material and Velcro is a good alternative and you can take it off as needed in the areas you want more sunlight. Your game room (home lol) is awesome, my goal is to have one one day.

About the film for the windows. If they are double pane glass,they would trap the heat inside and cause them to break. I suggest a cheap blackout curtain.

Definitely consider investing in some of that UV-blocking window film, b/c even if you NEVER open the blinds, more than enough light seeps through to cause sun damage over time. Your plastic & paper collectibles will thank you in the long-term 😁
Was just about to comment on getting some static uv-filter film but then you mentioned it yourself. That will def help protecting cases/colors from fading out in the long run. Cheers!
Also with customized shelves you don't have to hire a carpenter, you would set up the shelves to the height you want and you can get them through Ikia as well.
Love the intro to your videos on your TH-cam channel! You did mention that you were in the process of working with a recording studio to release out a limited edition vinyl of your album and your other music you’ve created. Are you also thinking of having your music on mp3 format as well? It is understandable if you aren’t or not interested in doing so because uploading music to streaming services like iTunes (Apple Music), Spotify, Tidal, etc. can prove to be a challenge at times, but it would be really cool to listen to your theme song on the go, be it in the car cruising around or on a flight while being on vacation, so on and so forth. By the way, your new game room looks great!! Glad you were able to get everything moved from one place to the other in one piece!
I've had does shelves for a little over a year now. The cross section are particle board, but the sides are actually, honeycombed paper filling between slim fiberboard. (according to Ikea) aka cardboard. I have heavier books on mine and no warping or anything elf going on. Knock on wood or honeycomb paper filing. ;)
If you see sunlight then UV rays are getting in. It will damage your stuff, just slower. They make tint for home windows that block out UV rays and I would suggest putting that on your windows. They also help keep people from looking in.
Being from South Florida where window tinting on homes is even subsidized by the electric companies didn't even think it was so unknown in other parts.
When it comes to shelving for games I usually use IKEA's Billy shelves because the multiple notches pretty much line up to make the shelves roughly the game box height
It's not about whether or not you can open the blinds/windows - it's about the UV light that leaks in through those blinds. I've had boardgames in my collection that face a window, fade on the box due to the UV.
the window "tint" also really helps with your electric bill...I live right outside New Orleans and we get 100 degree summer days with 100% humidity so the A/C is basically on full blast for 3 months straight...the first summer without the tint the electric bill was close to $250 a month....after the tint, running the A/C the same amount, the bill went down by as much as $20...now, that may not seem like much but over a ten year period I've saved over 2 grand....on a product that will cost you a $100 bucks for the whole house that is a great deal...fair warning though...it's not the easiest material to work with and is definitely a two person job, preferably two very patient people as it takes a few windows to really get it down...can find it at Home Depot, Lowe's or online I'm sure....I just recently re-did mine after ten years so I'm guessing that's about what you can expect as well if you decide to try it out...
If you know somebody willing to do laser-cutting for you, there are templates for smaller adjustable shelving that go into those Kallax shelves. Can’t post the link here, but search Etsy for Kallax. You can buy them pre-made, but at $40 each that’s gonna cost more than the shelves they go in.

I have a bunch of those cheaper Chinese lights in my basement. If yours are “smart” in that they can be controlled by an app, there’s a good chance they can be integrated with Alexa or google assistant, and using that, you can set up all the scheduling, etc like you can with hue.
Where I live (SE QLD Australia) my house was getting really hot from sun and heat getting through the Windows. Also the curtains were getting really damaged by the UV. We tinted the Windows and that made a HUGE difference in the temperature and it stopped pretty much all UV light getting in and damaging the curtains. Also getting the whole house done by a professional wasn't too expensive (by memory it was about AU $1500 and it's a 3br with rumpus house)
I use a 2x4 IKEA Kallax under my HDTV for my games consoles.With the H dividers, you can make each box contain 2 consoles. I also managed to find a third parts Cross divider which splits a box into 4 small but deep boxes (useful for mini consoles, did require some 3D Printed improvements). Currently under the TV are... - PS2 x3 (actually just picked up 2 very cheap at a charity shop, planning on refurbishing them and maybe one exclusively for gun games!), - PS3, - PS4, - Xbox, - Xbox 360, - Wii, - Dreamcast, - Playstation Mini, - Ouya, - Steamlink, - RetroPie (Pi 3B+ in a Retro Flag case and GameSir G3s wireless controller), - Mega Drive (I'm in the UK) / Genesis, - N64, - A Small Form Factor PC, These is still space for PS5, Xbox One, Xbox [4 / INSERT NAME HERE] and anything else retro I come across (within reason and may require some shuffling)! Plus, there's a box of portable consoles, including... - DMG Gameboy (backlit), - Gameboy Pocket, - Gameboy Color, - Kong Feng GB Boy Colour (backlit Gameboy Color clone modded for LiPo battery), - Gameboy Advance (pending backllght IPS upgrade), - Gameboy Advance SP (the one with the less good screen), - DS (original Silver), - 3DS XL (Link Between Worlds version), - PSP 1000 (Japanese Import), - PS Vita (OLED version), - LDK (Chinese emulation handheld. Great video! Love the new setup. Another thing to consider regarding LED lights: lumens, and whether the lights will be your primary light source for the room. Hue is capable of that while the cheaper LED lights are not.
You can get Special dividers for the Kallax and extra shelves Billy for the billy if you call IKea. I haven't been able to find them on the website. Basically they are treated as parts.

So, after watching your videos on the new gameroom, i decided to add the rope LED to my own gameroom! Those LEDs are amazing and i love that you can control them from your phone or tablet. I highly recommend adding these for a low budget addition!

About the possibility of adding film to your windows. I've worked third shift for years so sleeping during the daytime is pretty normal for me. I purchased a Two-Way film for my bedroom windows that give it a slight dark tint (think like reflective sun glasses) to help keep the full strength light from entering my room. It was pretty cheap on Amazon too; think I got a roll that was like 48" wide by 120" long for around $35. Was able to do three big windows in my bedroom and still have plenty left over. I'm not the handiest of handy-men in the world, but I found it pretty simple to do myself.

If you ever want to step up the shelving without spending a fortune, consider IKEA "Billy" bookcases. They are reasonably cheap and fully adjustable. In addition, you can get glass shelves and glass fronted doors. Adam Savage uses these for his own collection, and uses led strips on the inside of the doors for a great visual effect. It also really cuts down on the dust.

An option to avoid sunlight damage would be to buy blackout curtains. I live in Alaska where in the summer it's light out still at 10pm. They are life savers for sleeping as well as gaming.

Hey MetalJesusRocks - I used to store my games, DVDs, and Blur-rays in those Ikea shelves. As a suggestion, build a riser so that you can have two rows. The riser will elevate the second row of games and allow you to place another row in front of it. This also allows you to fit more games on 1 shelf than you currently have on it. Hope that helps. :)

I highly recommend the tinting film. On top of UV protection it can help temperature regulation quite a bit, especially on bigger windows and their directional orientation.
Question #1 How do I make money to afford a game room
You can buy rolls of that film to put on windows. They can also block people from seeing inside at a distance. It works like a mirror on the outside and a regular window on the inside. My dad bought a few rolls and they work great for keeping uv light out of the house and we live in AZ so it’s pretty good.

For your game collection these are what i've used go to The Video Shopper and look under FIXTURES & DISPLAYS > Wood and Other Slat Displays > "Hq" Custom Wall Unit (Starter) these are what blockbuster used on the walls of their stores, they are awesome and relatively affordably priced... they are great and will hold up to putting cases "end out" and being full... they also have solid backs and are great for covering windows and keeping UV out...
I have the same ikea shelves but I bought the drawers for them. They hold two rows of most game boxes in each cubby hole. Genesis, Saturn, OG PS1 boxes and any larger special edition games don't fit but any standard DVD/Blu ray style case fits great, as well as NES, Snes and N64 boxes. The only catch is obviously your games aren't on display, but the upside is it would also solve your UV light issue (and in my case tiny fingers covered in peanut butter that like to play with anything they can get their hands on). And since It's Ikea, you can customize to your liking. Mine the lower levels are drawers full of games and the higher levels are left open for games that don't fit and statues and stuff.
I don't know if you came up with a solution for your blinds yet but blackout curtains material and Velcro is a good alternative and you can take it off as needed in the areas you want more sunlight. Your game room (home lol) is awesome, my goal is to have one one day.
I am a camera operator and I have worked in the industry for several years. So I understand how expensive lighting can be. Your lighting setups and room setups are awesome.

You can get the UV film from Lowe’s or Home Depot. Not super expensive and super easy to apply. I did it my game room and it works great!
About the film for the windows. If they are double pane glass,they would trap the heat inside and cause them to break.
I suggest a cheap blackout curtain.

It's cool you consider sunlight, that was my first thought when doing my game room.
Definitely consider investing in some of that UV-blocking window film, b/c even if you NEVER open the blinds, more than enough light seeps through to cause sun damage over time. Your plastic & paper collectibles will thank you in the long-term 😁
Was just about to comment on getting some static uv-filter film but then you mentioned it yourself. That will def help protecting cases/colors from fading out in the long run. Cheers!
Also with customized shelves you don't have to hire a carpenter, you would set up the shelves to the height you want and you can get them through Ikia as well.
Love the intro to your videos on your TH-cam channel! You did mention that you were in the process of working with a recording studio to release out a limited edition vinyl of your album and your other music you’ve created. Are you also thinking of having your music on mp3 format as well? It is understandable if you aren’t or not interested in doing so because uploading music to streaming services like iTunes (Apple Music), Spotify, Tidal, etc. can prove to be a challenge at times, but it would be really cool to listen to your theme song on the go, be it in the car cruising around or on a flight while being on vacation, so on and so forth. By the way, your new game room looks great!! Glad you were able to get everything moved from one place to the other in one piece!
I've had does shelves for a little over a year now. The cross section are particle board, but the sides are actually, honeycombed paper filling between slim fiberboard. (according to Ikea) aka cardboard. I have heavier books on mine and no warping or anything elf going on. Knock on wood or honeycomb paper filing. ;)

If you see sunlight then UV rays are getting in. It will damage your stuff, just slower. They make tint for home windows that block out UV rays and I would suggest putting that on your windows. They also help keep people from looking in.
Being from South Florida where window tinting on homes is even subsidized by the electric companies didn't even think it was so unknown in other parts.
When it comes to shelving for games I usually use IKEA's Billy shelves because the multiple notches pretty much line up to make the shelves roughly the game box height
I love that people ask about the shelves as if they are a difficult thing to find.
It's not about whether or not you can open the blinds/windows - it's about the UV light that leaks in through those blinds. I've had boardgames in my collection that face a window, fade on the box due to the UV.
About the sunlight...room darkening curtains could easily solve that issue, and you could still open them when you wanted to, just a thought

the window "tint" also really helps with your electric bill...I live right outside New Orleans and we get 100 degree summer days with 100% humidity so the A/C is basically on full blast for 3 months straight...the first summer without the tint the electric bill was close to $250 a month....after the tint, running the A/C the same amount, the bill went down by as much as $20...now, that may not seem like much but over a ten year period I've saved over 2 grand....on a product that will cost you a $100 bucks for the whole house that is a great deal...fair warning though...it's not the easiest material to work with and is definitely a two person job, preferably two very patient people as it takes a few windows to really get it down...can find it at Home Depot, Lowe's or online I'm sure....I just recently re-did mine after ten years so I'm guessing that's about what you can expect as well if you decide to try it out...

I have a bunch of those cheaper Chinese lights in my basement. If yours are “smart” in that they can be controlled by an app, there’s a good chance they can be integrated with Alexa or google assistant, and using that, you can set up all the scheduling, etc like you can with hue.
Where I live (SE QLD Australia) my house was getting really hot from sun and heat getting through the Windows. Also the curtains were getting really damaged by the UV. We tinted the Windows and that made a HUGE difference in the temperature and it stopped pretty much all UV light getting in and damaging the curtains. Also getting the whole house done by a professional wasn't too expensive (by memory it was about AU $1500 and it's a 3br with rumpus house)
I use a 2x4 IKEA Kallax under my HDTV for my games consoles.With the H dividers, you can make each box contain 2 consoles. I also managed to find a third parts Cross divider which splits a box into 4 small but deep boxes (useful for mini consoles, did require some 3D Printed improvements).
Currently under the TV are...

Another thing to consider regarding LED lights: lumens, and whether the lights will be your primary light source for the room. Hue is capable of that while the cheaper LED lights are not.
You can get Special dividers for the Kallax and extra shelves Billy for the billy if you call IKea. I haven't been able to find them on the website. Basically they are treated as parts.
Stellar content as always, MJR. You inspire me to keep collecting despite burnout and finances. I would like to ask one question. In videos like these, where there's a huge variety of games shown across all eras, would you be willing to include a list of featured games/footage sources in the future? This would make questions like 'what game is at 16:07' appear less frequently. And yes I really do want to know the answer to that question. Keep up that amazing work. I could listen to you talk about your past work experience for hours since it's just so eclectic and cool.
