The appendices of the books explain all the history after Frodo sails away. You can even trace family trees and the origins of the languages. Tolkien added a lifetime of detail to every aspect of this world.
Sam becomes mayor of Hobbiton repeatedly, and Aragorn visits him at the edge of the Shire. Merry and Pippin, when older, both go South to visit Eomer at the time of his death, and then on to Gondor until the end of their days. Legolas and Gimli have a splendid friendship, visiting each others' realms. When Sam is very old, he too gets to sail away to Valinor, since he was briefly a ring bearer - in the books, the last ship of elves doesn't leave until then.
Valinor (The Undying Lands), where they all go, is almost like a parable for heaven. It's the blessed eternal realm of the Valar, the original angel beings of Middle Earth. All the remaining elves go there eventually, as well as the ring bearers. We can think of it like it's another dimension, unreachable by us humans.

Tolkein probably knew Wellington's statement that, "Next to a battle lost, the greatest misery is a battle won."

If you were british and you were killed on the western front in ww1 you were said to have ‘gone west’. The usage would go like: ‘where’s lieutenant Smith?’; Gone west’ - meaning he’s dead.
When gandalf tells pippin that when you die you see the white shores then the green fields, thats what he was referring to - the white cliffs of dover (chalk) and the green fields of Britain beyond them.
‘Going west’ had an almost religious significance to british soldiers on the western front, which is also why in middle earth the men originally came from the west, out of the sea, and the elves are returning to the west, over the sea.

This is a good comment, but in Tolkein's writings, the first men (Edain) awakened in the east & came to the west, like the elves did before them. It was only when they allied with the elves in their fight against Morgoth that they were blessed with the land of Numenor, officially becoming "men of the west".
Personally, I think it was a bit hypocritical of Eru to sink the whole land of Numenor, just because a sizable faction of them rose up in rebellion & disobeyed orders. I mean, Feanor & the Noldor basically did the same thing when they rejected the word of god & went back east for revenge & violence. They also engaged in herecy & kinslaying, but because they are so "noble" or whatever, they basically just got cursed to fail & feel bad about it. Meanwhile Eru Iluvator is out here bestowing the "gift of death" upon innocent Numenorian women & children because the monarch who led them was a tyrant who was obsessed with immortality... something which isnt just a vague concept in this world either, there are literally immortal beings who dont age or get sick because they were just born special. Like getting genocided because you accuse god of playing favorites kind of just illustrates the point

Tolkien only fought for a few months in 1916. He was then invalided out with trench fever - at that time a nasty incurable disease that was often permanently debilitating and sometimes fatal. My great grandfather was invalided from the western front with trench fever in late 1917 but by then my great grandfather had spent 3 years on the western front.
I suspect tolkien felt a great sense of failure, because just before he was invalided, one of his best friends - who had been his friend since school - was killed and another was killed just after he was invalided. His regiment was completely wiped out soon after that. And trench fever carried a bit of stigma, especially if your service on the front had been limited.
The other of Tolkien’s best friends - the ‘fellowship’ of his school days - had joined the navy and the two survivors grew distant (although Tolkien named his son Christopher after that friend). Is it a coincidence that there were 4 hobbits when tolkien’s childhood group of best friends was 4?
We know that tolkien - who was posted to a training unit after being invalided - had great difficulty adjusting when he returned from hospital. Only his wife - whose dancing in a forest glade inspired him to write the story of luthien and beren (he added ‘luthien’ to her gravestone when she died and his family added “Beren’ to his) - seems to have been able to settle him down.

I think Tolkien's experience also taught him how futile war and the pursuit of power is, which is also a theme of _LotR_ . World War 1 was a typical European war, caused by power politics on both sides. There was no "good" and "bad" side, the two sides had been in an arms race for decades. It killed 25 million people and didn't accomplish anything positive, except make intelligent people realize the world needed institutions to prevent war.

When a Nazgul is attacked they fight back with something called the Black Breath and it will often kill the attacker. Lore says that the hands of the king are the hands of a healer and when Aragorn went around healing Eowyn, Merry and others word spread that the king had returned.
Frodo didn't die but the Ring destroyed him nonetheless. The Ring left wounds on his soul. He didn't give up the Ring voluntarily and he longed for it every day the damage it had done could only be healed in the Undying Lands. Many years later after Rosie had died Sam travelled to Tol Eressea and him and Frodo spent the rest of their remaining days together. Legolas and Gimli also travelled there in a boat that Legolas had made because Gimli wanted to gaze upon Galadriel one last time.
Yes that was Andy Serkis in the tavern at the end.
When the elves leave Middle Earth they go to Valinor, the Undying Lands, sort of elf heaven but not really. Bilbo can't actually enter Valinor proper, no mortal can, but he can go to an island just off its shores called Tol Eressea where the elves will heal him from the damage all those years of having the Ring did.

    • @user-lv5bt3nt3r
      @user-lv5bt3nt3r 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The black breath isnt really a weapon. Its more like an aura of fear around the nazgul that affects anyone who isnt immune to it - including humans and orcs. Theyve tried to recreate it with the screeching noise (which is from a very creepy type of celtic warhorn - imagine having someone making that racket at you just before a battle!) but that doesnt really work.

1:03:41 Unfortunately, she is still dying, but it will take a very long time to come to pass.
With Sauron's return and the one Ring found, the Elves will soon no longer be able to use the power of their rings to keep their lands from changing; decaying. Hence the decision to leave middle eath and go to the undying lands, Valinor, where the Valar dwell. Their they will continue being until the end of the world.
Now, Arwen belongs to a special line of elves (half elven) who can chose whether to be counted among elves or among men. Arwen chose to be a mortal and elected to stay behind to be with Arogorn, her fate is sealed. She will fade and die, regardless of the fact that One ring is Destroyed.

Denethor's madness, suicide, and attempted killing of his own son are not well explained in the movie. In the books it is revealed that he has a Palantir (crystal ball), like Saruman had. Sauron has another one, and just as with Saruman, Sauron is able to control what Denethor sees with it. Over the years, Sauron psychologically manipulated him, showing him all the military power arrayed against Gondor, until his mind was overthrown and he became suicidal.

The Undying Lands is the place were the Valar (basicly the gods in this universe) live. It's not Heaven (were Eru, the Almighty God of this Univers, dwells). It exists on the same plane as Middle-Earth, just removed from it. Only Elves are allowed to go there.

I have to say I prefer _Lord of the Rings_ to all the endless superhero movies. In superhero movies, the world is menaced by villains, we humans are helpless, and the only thing we can do is find someone with super powers to be a vigilante. The underlying message of all superhero movies is "ordinary people don't matter".
In LotR the goal is to destroy power. The good people of the world unite for the common good, and assemble a multiracial team that work together to destroy the ring. The most humble creatures, the Hobbits, are the ones who can save the world, because they desire power the least. I think this is a message the world needs to hear.

The ending could have been even longer if PJ hadn't killed off Saruman and Wormtongue early in the film. In the book, the final battle of the War of the Ring takes place when the hobbits return home only to discover that the Shire is occupied by Saruman and his "ruffians". This chapter was called "The Scouring of the Shire".
In the Undying Lands of the West, Bilbo and Frodo should be able to live out their remaining years in peace on the island of Tol Eressea. As mortals, they probably could not dwell in Valinor itself without being overwhelmed, or so Professor Tolkien surmised.
Hobbits are mortal beings, more closely related to Men then to Dwarves or the immortal Elves.

9:46 Your doggo didn't want the Ring destroyed, I take it. If you want ideas on what to react to next, I would recommend Nolan and Tarantino's movies. Assuming you haven't seen them ofc. The Dark Knight trilogy by Nolan is almost as good as this one.
And yeah, the lore is vast. It stretches all the way back to the beginning of time, and the creation of the universe and Arda. For thousands upon thousands of years, there were countless wars against Sauron's master Morgoth. After his defeat by the end of the First Age, Sauron took over the mantle as dark lord. Eventually, his manipulations led the men of Númenor to invade Aman.
Aman was a western continent where the Valar, the Maiar and a bunch of elves dwelled. Gandalf, Saruman, Sauron and the balrog are all Maiar spirits. They typically serve the Valar, who are greater spirits. The Valar in turn serve Eru himself, the creator of the universe. Morgoth was one of the Valar at the beginning of time, but rebelled and corrupted Sauron and the balrogs. Most balrogs died in the First Age. Hopefully, Gandalf managed to kill the last one. Otherwise, there might be trouble in the Fourth Age.
Anyway, Eru intervened directly against the Númenorian invasion of Aman and reshaped the world. This was at the end of the Second Age, 122 years before the battle that Peter Jackson opened the first movie with. Eru basically lifted Aman up to the heavens, away from Middle-Earth and the rest of Arda. This meant that sailing to the West would now take the elves to another realm, instead of across the sea like before. All of this is just the tip of the iceberg, the First Age in particular is full of epic tales.
