Karl pilkington is not funny….. the office was not funny. Ricky gervais is intelligent, eloquent and persuasive, but also not that funny. Golden globe duties? Priceless HILARIOUS even, bit he wasn’t being funny, he was being rudely blunt/honest about other people’s shame. That is not being funny it is being indifferent.

The 4 countries which make up the UK are *not* "sovereign" nations. They are all subordinate to the UK Parliament which determines which powers it chooses to devolve to the specific legislature of each of the respective countries. None have responsibility for defence or foreign affairs, for example. The last time Scotland was a sovereign nation state was in 1707. The UK has the power to modify or even abolish the devolved administrations in any of the home countries.

I have absolutely no axe to grind with England, because, personally, I've never been 'downtrodden', & to be honest, I don't know anyone who has, although you wouldn't know that, if you heard some of my countrymen, who seem to think Braveheart was a documentary, instead of a Hollywood version of history, i.e. entirely hitorically flawed!

Just one suggestion... Make sure you are listening to these 60's and 70's bands in stereo - there is a lot going on with the way they cross-mix the stereo channels. Likewise, make sure you record your reaction in stereo - you lose a lot as a listener if you have recorded in mono as you appear to have done here. Apart from that detail - great stuff!

The US belief that British food is 'less than perfect' comes from the many US servicemen who came over here after Britain had been fighting a war for three years. Things had been rationed, and even eggs were hard to get legally. - no ice cream? The US officers had issued alcoholic spirits and steaks and even ice cream, which came from Britain when they were stationed here. The average British kid wouldn't see an orange for ten more years...

There's a YT vid about how Britain came to be, and how England came to be. These islands have had a number of Kingdoms, which slowly came together until one ruler ruled them all. Then it broke up and reunited a couple of times, then civil wars, etc. The current version is only since about 1922, with modifications. - and there are a lot of islands with interesting statuses. Lundy is one, Rockall is another.

Welsh is an English term - The term “British” predates this term and was coined by the Romans for the people the English call Welsh. The people of Wales are most certainly British, Thee British in fact! Cymro Britons! Welsh also means foreigner, are you foreign on your own island. The only people of Wales who call themselves “Welsh not British” are those that don’t know their nations history and origins.

From 1801 up until 1922 the UK included the whole of the island of Ireland. At that point though the catholic south broke away but the protestant dominated Northern Ireland decided to remain part of the UK. (This divide between catholics and protestants came about because of the earlier historical relations between England and Ireland which included English settlement in Ireland from the 12th century, under the Normans, onwards - the initial waves of settlers from England being catholic like the native Irish population but later waves of English settlers being protestant after Henry VIII broke from Rome and set up his own Church of England in 1534.) Up until the Good Friday agreement this split caused problems for the British government since although Northern Ireland was dominated by the protestants it had a substantial and growing catholic population who wanted to unite with the south and leave the UK - tensions being maintained since the catholics were treated as second class citizens by many in the protestant majority. This culminated in the "Troubles" which was an armed conflict in Northern Ireland between catholic and protestant para-military/terrorist groups with the British army also deployed initially as a peacekeeping force but latterly as a participant in the conflict. The troubles lasting from 1968 to 1998 and the Good Friday agreement.

I am a Brit who lived and worked in Alicante area for a few years, and had a wondeful time. My advice for anyone going to visit or live in another country is to mix with locals and avoid groups of your fellow countrymen, as you will become too conspicuous. For the usual reasons I avoided the drunken hordes in Benidorm and found everyone in Alicante to be polite friendly and helpful, because i tried to fit in and mixed only with locals. I think it's a similar story when visiting any part of the UK, take care at night in many places, but ask locals for advice and tips about shops, bars, cafes, transport or general sights. Here in the UK you can even ask police for advice about where to avoid if you are concerned about safety, as they can be quite helpful in that regard

Akrotiri and Dhekelia are the parts of Cyprus which we retained when we gave Cyprus it's independence, if you drive across Cyprus into them you'll pass signs telling you that you are entering the UK. They're largely controlled (in the civil sense) in line with the Cypriot way of being. They're why Turkey stopped in 1974, because they ran upto the Border of the UK and didn't need that kind of hassle. The Republic of Ireland is technically named Eire (which means "Ireland" in the Irish language), only we in Britain really use that name, everyone else uses Republic of Ireland or just Ireland, which in terms of the Irish language is correct as well. So you can keep using Ireland to refer to the ROI. We also use names like Ulster (for NI) which have little meaning to anyone not of these Islands, because six of the nine counties of Ulster (region of Ireland) make up NI. Anyway, you can keep calling it Ireland, we'll know what you mean, and we aren't in anyway offended by you using that name, it's what Eire means in English anyway.

Aye, Gibraltar was always going to pop up. I'm sorry Spain, and especially you, lovely Spanish Girl... but hands off, it's ours 😊 Hey, maybe it's a good thing. The UK and Spain being physically attached. We love Spain, so let's look at it as our engagement ring 😊 ❤ from Northeast England ❤️

The UK is a Political Union, so British yes but it doesn`t include the island of Ireland (north and republic) so it`s tricky, the British isles contain all. confusing I know.

The people of Northern Ireland are British (they have British passports for example), so it's not tricky at all. Thats doesn't mean that they are not also Irish.

UK does include Northern Ireland. N.I.uses the pound as currency Miles for distance and speed limits. Elects MP's to the UK parliament. Republic of Ireland uses Euro for currency, and kilometres for distance and speed limits. No connection to the UK parliament.

@@Thurgosh_OG they have a UK passport same as me, it states British at the top, but says United kingdom of great britain and NI at the bottom. so a Uk passport, I agree with you, I see the NI as British but not all would agree and it probably would cause an argument at some point. and it is so tricky it`s a minefield at times. lol
