For those who are confused by him momentarily being confused by being called “Gandalf,” Mithrandir’s actual name is Olórin. Gandalf is simply the name he’s gone by on Middle Earth.
It still makes no sense. He comes back into his body on the mountain, then get Gwahir to fly him to Rohan where he gets the horse. By the time he meets Aragirn and Co he is fully aware of who and what he is. I love this scene, but it makes no sense to me that he would be confused about who he is there.
Gandalf is thousands of years old, and he knew to do everything you just mentioned because it is part of his assigned task. Remembering what mortals called him is not.
@@Regfife So in that entire time, that he flew to Rohan and spoke to Denethor, he didn't remember that people called him Gandalf? Mithrandir literally means the grey pelgrim. Anyway, the scene is great, but the part where he looks confused doesn't make sense to me. As if he just came back from oblivion.
His physical body died after his battle with the Balrog, but since he had stayed faithful to the he task he had been sent to do, he was returned to life by Eru Ilúvatar and charged with finishing his task before he could return to Valinor as the Maiar Olórin.
10:57 Sir Ian McKellen imitated Sr Christopher Lee, who played Saruman; and that was even before just a little bit of audio editing by the studio to slightly overlap their voices.
Gandalf got upgraded from a Maiar to a Demi-Valar by the hand of Eru Ilúvatar. Legolas is on both knees with his head bowed in total respect, Aragorn is in shock, Gimli is acting like he is just met Aulë! Appropriate.
I can remember reading the trilogy when I was a kid in the 70s and being so so depressed when Gandalf fell. And so overjoyed when he returned. The imagination of a young boy in 70s America.
What I loved about this scene was how the blended both Ian's and Chris's voice and intercutting between the two, so some words sounded like Saruman and some like Gandalf.
Layering the two voices was genius. Also "every day was as long as a life age of the earth" . To him, that's /thousands/ of years. Taking a moment to remember what someone's nickname for you was is kinda understandable.
Gandalf the Gray died! But he reincarnated himself back into the physical with an upgrade to Gandalf the White because Sarumon turned evil. He realized in spirit form, that evil would win if he did not come back to help the powers of good defeat evil. White Wizards are the most powerful of all the Wizards. That is why Gandalf had some memory loss of his former self. ""Yes, Gandalf the Gray. That is what they used to call me." YES! I even commented in the fall of Gandalf the Grey that you needed to do this one. I'm so happy you did so. You can also tell that a few of them either have seen it before or at least read the books. Like Magic Maggy knew what was about to happen and kept it secret. Perhaps I'm one of the few that can hear the difference in the voice when he first starts speaking. At first, they did use Christopher Lee and then transitioned it over to Ian McKellen. If you listen closely, you can hear that it's Christopher, then transitions to both of them, and continues until you can hear that it's Ian.
I don't know whether to believe half these reactions, because if they truly had no clue then it's bloody depressing how many reactors have never read the greatest fantasy novel of all time and have zero clue what they're reacting to :(
“Wait does he sound like Gandalf or Saruman?” Everybody is asking this. Personally, I think, at least at first, that it sounds like Saruman. The movie really wants u to believe that our heroes are cornered and up against a superior opponent. So why isn’t he attacking us? Because it’s not Saruman. 😮 Hooray! 😃
2:31 fake first time seeing movie. That scene have very good construction, first quote is Saruman voice with Gandalf low, and second Gandalf quote with Saruman low. But she before to listen or see the hair, know is Gandalf, when nothing in the movie tell you Gandalf can be alive, and turning to Gandalf the White
It amazes me how nobody watching this scene, ever spots the most obvious clue that this Wizard can only be Gandalf.....he's carrying a sword! The only weapon we ever see Saruman with is his Staff.
You do realize that this movie came out in 2002 right? That was over 20 years ago. A lot of these reactors aren't that much older and were probably to young to see it or remember it. And the older ones may simply have not been interested at the time.

“So, basically he died and leveled up?”
Yep. That’s exactly what happened.
For those who are confused by him momentarily being confused by being called “Gandalf,” Mithrandir’s actual name is Olórin. Gandalf is simply the name he’s gone by on Middle Earth.

@@D0nut42 but he would have already talked to mortals! First to Gwahir (we can argue how mortal he is) and then to Denethor to pick up Shadowfax.
@@JohnnyRock84 Those two knew him as Mithrandir. Between them and the elves he probably heard that name at least as much as Gandalf, if not more.
@@Regfife So in that entire time, that he flew to Rohan and spoke to Denethor, he didn't remember that people called him Gandalf? Mithrandir literally means the grey pelgrim. Perfectly explained. I’d only add that he was returned to also somewhat replace Saruman’s place, but that’s quite evident
Yeah he died and came back. I read the Hobbit.
/sarcasm
"I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin on the mountainside" goes so hard bro
Gandalf got a couple levels in Paladin for Divine Smite...
I want to be able to use that line someday.

Reborn and upgraded to a higher, more powerful status. Such a cool scene!

fun fact: they merged Christopher Lee's voice in to the scene so it has a more reverberating sound.
Layering the two voices was genius.

Gandalf is an amazing character🔥💯
i always favored fizban!
Somebody leveled up.
Leveled up as in kept going and going and going until died, then finally decided to spend his XP lol
Of course he leveled up. He got all that XP from soloing the Boss…
May I recommend a compilation of Gandalf’s speech to Pippin about death? One of the most poignant moments in the trilogy.
That scene always moves me, esp with the Into the West, playing in the background.
When I first watched this scene as a kid I was thinking (also as avid rpg gamer): Damn! Gandalf leveled up. Balrog kill gave him shit load of exp.
Gandalf is my favorite character in all of literature and film! To see how much he means to others just warms my heart so much!
Please do the scene of Gandalf talking to Pippin about Death.
The LoR films were the BEST trilogy ever
The films were, are and will be forever the best trilogy
I love the shocked looks of all these reactors.
When the trailer came out in 2002, they straight up told us that Gandalf was coming back.
I read the books but i can imagine seeing him back from the death on the screen. Great reactions.

Oh, c’mon.
Absolutely, the book brought tears. The White Wizard returned.
16:03 "Jesus Christ." Yeah. Basically. 😂
That was definitely Christopher Lee doing the first part of Gandalf's speech.
There's a hint that it's NOT Saruman. When he breaks Gimli's axe with his staff, you see Glamdring at his hip. Saruman doesn't carry a sword
Gandalf "Giga-Chad" The White
Why has that popcorn in bed girl reacted legit 3 times to this movie like it was the first time😂
So many people never read the books...
Gandalf took over for Saruman the White, when Saruman went evil.
