My son, being almost 2 years old, enjoys watching this stuff. He likes to help me work on my tractor. He's definitely going to build things when he gets bigger, I can tell. Great build, too.
I legit started making a Murray race mower after watching the John Deere video, it's got a 24 vtwin in it and eventually I'll put a peerless 820 in it,just wanna say thank you for continuing this series and inspireing me
I have almost the exact same model Murray. I had problems years ago with the 12hp so I swapped in an 18hp OHC and a metal deck idler. She’s been working great for years but starting to fray a bit. Thinking of making her a racer at some point.
After seeing this Ive got the itch now😅. I have a 48" cut Lawn Machine with a 16.5 hp engine that i bought 10 yrs ago sitting in my garage. I traded a wore out 12hp murry and 100 bucks for the Lawn Machine. It was to big for my yard, and i spent more time backing up and going in circles, just trying to mow my lawn. I figured out it was quicker to cut it with the push mower, so i parked the rider. All it needs is a hot battery and a fresh tank of gas. I took a few laps around the neighborhood on it two years ago. Im 60yrs old now. I may not lower it, but my old ass is going to have some fun! Thanks, guys, for the motivational video!
Nice! Mine was a lowered & chopped Rhino lined mid 90s MTD mower with a Briggs opposed twin I/C 20hp. I had ribbed golf cart meaty slicks on the back & red rims & whitewall tire paint. "there's a pic on my page" It was running a comet 40 series cvt to stock belt speed changer then rear end via a vertical jackshaft & pilowblock berrings & a u shaped pice of heavy sheet metal bolted to the frame under the dash. The battery was mounted in board the frame just behind the right footboard & I used its old tierod ball pices as chargeing lugs sticking out the side to clamp Frankenstein cables on😁. Should of ran a belt from jackshaft to smaller pulley on rear end derectley & got rid of the other stuff as it did'nt go very fast. The 20 hp would of been Wild with headers! "also on an old dunecycle or sand buggy too"✌👍
It's crazy that people are putting V8s in riding mowers now. I was scrolling through TH-cam videos a couple of weeks ago and this guy was running a big block Chevy engine in his. It wasn't lowered, but it was crazy fast
This is sick! Planning to get a Craftsman GT and turn it into something like this! You should keep the single broken running light, gives it character.
my dad built this exact mower into a race mower in the early 2000s he put a gas pedal and bulit a cool trailer with a seat for us kids! it was a great memories from my childhood riding on it with him and watching him pop wheelies. so cool!
Im currently building 4 racing mowers and they all gonna have the same motor and trans axle carb ect only difference will be the brands they are one is this exact same year make and model Murray as yours, 1978 john deer, 2002 craftsman, and another Murray same as yours and i built a beautiful dirt oval that is right ubder ,1/8 of a mile around the oitside of the track and high banking for mowers and its a blast i got two more kowers to finish building and then me and my buddies will have mowers to race against each other on the offseason of real big car oval dirt and asphalt racing we do. We all drive asphalt latemodels and dirt unp mods. Two of my friends are buying the materials lights and doing the work to install led lighting around the track and another friend paid for all the clay and sand and dirt to build uo the track and for a wall we used old asphalt latemodel slicks and dirt modified tires cause we all have hubdreds of old knes behind our shops so great use for them . I plan on starting a winter lawnmower racing series at the track we built and some go kart and mini sprint racing and let the kids who run the might mite dirt mods and even dirt track bandos to come get kore seat time in winter time and race as well. All the trans in using us peerless trans axels the best rhere is for mower racing and the mowers are basically racing go karts with lawnmower frame thsts ben modified and lawnmower mower body thats been modified to fit the lower ride heigh and look good as well with a Fabercated simulated cutting deck made of sheets of aluminum to keeoo it light as possible. And the rear fenders are rolled abd bent out of the same aluminum we use to make dirt modified bodies with. I have one more a 5 th mower im building but its getting a diet modified or latemodel style looking body on it with a little roll cage racing seat and full racing harness it will be so cool. One suggestion inwould give you is start with a are frame and weld steel angle on there to strengthen the stock frame and make it kore solid. I use the 1"x1" angle and also use some small 1"x1" square tubing as well and cross brace and run along the full length of each frame side as well. You shoild have built it a set of rules if there is any lawn mower racing near you so you can go race it instead of it being a one off build where its not anywhere legal for any lawnmower racing class near you with out alpt of work to tear it down and re do it all. But looks great and safe
I love old, used vehicles of all kinds with dents and signs of wear, but technically in new condition. Visually, the paintwork should be completely removed with a metal stain and the bare metal protected from corrosion with a transparent coat of paint. All dents or dings should remain, which indicates that it is a racing mower that has already fought many battles. Then it should get some really cool and rare vintage stickers, which are stuck on before the protective paint is applied, so that it is protected for a very long time afterwards. The headlight lenses should have a yellow tint and as far as the tires are concerned, Firestone tires with a white label should be mounted on drop-center rims. ! The Murray would then appear on many online portals and show how sexy it is to forego paintwork and optical new condition, but invest in invisible technology!
You guys did great job!!!!!! I love it!!!.. however you made it more difficult. The pieces you cut off the rear just needs to be moved up and re welded. The front just make a new pivot hole moved up the same amount you cut out the rear( more for a raked look). It's not as low but super easy to make a couple of them and race with your friends.
Hey guys just was thinking instead of welding on the stock non adjusting lawnmower spindles why not weld on a set of adjustable go-kart racing spindles so you can adjust camber and caster and so your not stuck with one setup or possibly stuck with a setup that makes you slow or so your not stuck with one that makes it difficult to handle just throwing some improvement ideas out there for you but it is a really cool project and know I want to build one keep up the good work
nice im making a racing mower but completly from scratch from two different mowers ive stripped them all down ready for the build when is the next part coming out
THIS! is what God intended a Mury to look like! Outstanding design and concept. Now ... Take several Mechanical engineering courses! Learn stress to weight to torque load to drag coefficient to camber to caster loads to ............ LOL. But for now, just have fun! ! ! ! !
Did you guys lengthen it ? Probably look better and handle better sitting in it rather than on top of it . But you guys are getting it DONE, maybe some body parts you can try fiberglass ( light weight, just watch fiberglass mold videos)

Guys awesome video it’s looking sick, I have literally done the complete opposite with my Murray ride on, these things look so much better when they aren’t used to mow haha
It never ceases to amaze me how people can show how smart they are with building good contraptions only to show their true stupidity by drilling holes in metal pieces using a drill press but holding the pieces with their hand and not secured down. Absolute stupidity!!

This is an awesome project, & I just happen to have at least 4 junk riding mowers to experiment with! Very cool!
😮
You guys should add a hole in the now top of the transaxle case and pump it full of grease, the will live alot longer that way
i have almost the exact same model but i went the exact opposite direction and made it a mud mower, this thing is bad ass for sure.
Bout to buy a lawnmower for this one!
I wanna do the same thing you did to your john deer I have something that looks like it might be the same model
He was using a John Deere 108

Can't wait to see the next video. I have the same model Murray and I'm going to build one similar. I'm putting a 19.5 opposed twin Briggs on it..

Good trick for getting the axel extension straight.
Was it tricky to make sure the rear axel is aligned correctly? Does it pull to the left or right?
Defiantly isn't perfect, just go to measure correctly when mounting transmission mounts. No noticeable pull.
I have the same style Murray pulley swapped. They are great
I love the way the rear tires tucked into the rear fenders so I think I might have to do something like that
Guys awesome video it’s looking sick, I have literally done the complete opposite with my Murray ride on, these things look so much better when they aren’t used to mow haha
I needed a video like this bc this is what ima do for my senior project
Great video, I really want to do it myself now. Out of curiosity which engine you put in?
a briggs and stration, it was the motor that came with it so it was easy to use. if you need help let me know I used to work on these things
Is it a must to lower it? Will it flip over on stock height?
So how did this mower handle on a dirt track?
how do the rear wheels stay attached? are they just using the friction from the threads?
Keyway
Cool build!
I bet their legs was all to hell after all that grinding with no pants but I appreciate the video I got the exact same mower. I will try to do it on.
