I couldn't stop laughing on the first test run~! Love this kid and love how honorable he is. It's not about leaving a better planet for our kids...... it's about leaving better kids for the planet. Thanks Grandpa!!
Just adding the bigger wheels also slightly increases your gear inches even more. Slower to accelerate, but higher top speed and holds speed better and won't get stuck in soft surfaces as easily. I learned a lot from riding a 29er mountain bike. Like how I never could get the gearing as short as on anything smaller
Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
When I was a kid (70s/80s) my parents had a Snapper riding mower with a 5hp rear engine. THAT thing was FAST! If you popped the clutch in top gear, you could ride a wheelie across the yard. I'm giving my parents a lightly used Craftsman riding mower, and I think I'm going to build a "racer" out if their old Troy-Bilt. Most people lower their mowers so they handle better!
Dude I know what You're talking about! I have one in my folks storage shed. After mowing the lawn I'd put that sucker in 5th turn off the blade engagement lean back and drop the clutch lol Wheelies all day! Loved that snapper
Tip presented in good faith: it will chew through belts if you engage the blades while the engine is full throttle. You are supposed to turn the blades on at low throttle then increase to cutting rpms! Paused at 4:18 to comment this but I'm enjoying the video and will finish watching!
I think it’s a safe assumption that you’ve got grampys genes! The pulley ratio is too tough to start out in fifth, that’s why it stalled. I’d just start in third and work my way up but also throw a tension pulley on the belt to help keep it tighter. Man did I get a great idea from this. I have an l100 also and an stx38 I’ve been wanting to use strictly as a wagon puller for yardwork anyway so it looks like I’ll be listing the 38” deck on the marketplace and building me a workhorse like yours! 😉 Thanks for taking us along. A helmet would be a great idea. Remember it’s not how fast you go, it’s that sudden stop ending your ride that’ll hurt! (I just buried a brother who got hit on his bike SIX HOUSES AWAY FROM HOME!) So stay safe young man and stay dirty! Great job...
Yeah me and my grandpa has something similar, he owned a repair shop for small engines, for about 9 years I was with him every day fixing old tractors!
I bolted on a older Vanguard 14hp V-Twin on my L100, still working out the exhaust (to be quieter) but have open side pipes currently. Big exhaust, a 16hp carb so far. Sounds awesome. So easy to swap engines on these.
Very cool, i like how you didn't have to buy any parts and it would be cool if you could hookup the brake linkage to the mower deck lift or pto engagement so you could shift gears on the fly.
We have the same lawn mower design for the cutting deck. If the belts and the line aren't put in the right way they will smoke because they're rubbing. It's a good design and is reliable when put together correctly.
Never actually thought of cutting the guts of a pulley and swapping them.. i may have to try it and build my welding skills doin it too.. top job mate.
Love this. I am wanting to do something like this. Off road toys are too expensive in TN. I want to put a motorcycle engine on a lawn mower. But I will probably start with what you are doing.
Some lawnmowers have very powerful engines already in them Ik one I have had a 500 or 650cc motor and it is a beast always look online for people selling used ones too
When I was a little boy me and my grandpa would drive the tractor. And I would sit on his lap there was many times we would go out of control. And we both would hold the steering wheel as tied as we could.
Funny, and Straight forward! Good stuff bud, Me n My Grapa Spent a lot of time together too! He taught me to mechanic on Diesel Trucks! Best times !!!!
I remember digging a pit for the new garage that was going in with my 77-year-old grandfather with terminal cancer. The man was a beast and would not stop. He taught me so much about life even at a young age before he passed on the value of hard work. And as for mechanical my father and my uncle got me on the start of mechanics and machining. So now whenever I'm working on something whether it be my truck, my Harley, my house or anything in general if I'm capable of making the part myself I do it. It's what my grandfather instilled on me if you're able to do something do it! 🤟💪
It's also like a bike transmission where if you had a big rear cog and small front gear then you would have a very short ratio with low speed and easy climbing for hills, but if you switched the gear sizes then you would have a monster on the flats but the hills would kill it.
Your grandpa would definitely be proud of you. I have this exact same lawn tractor. Not looking to do this, but I like what you’ve done. Looks like a lot of fun for sure! 👍🏼
This young man should be afforded a scholarship with John Deere. Oh! and I happen to have an L100 that I am always welding up the deck to make it work, after years of cutter-deck neglect from previous operator. Well done fella (Highly regarded - Australian Praise) and all kudos to you.
Im going to try to get one of these lawn mowers just to do stuff with and fix just for fun and to learn about it because i wanna be a mechanic and this is probably the best way to start

Good job Dude,. The world need more young Men like you, building, tinkering, engineering, creating,. I put a two stroke mini bike engine on a bikecycle in highschool, I wrode it to school all year . After 35 yrs in heavy construction 59 now disabled. I found myself looking for a new hobby, I built a motorbike like the one I built at 16 in highschool, only this one is real nice I built it to look like a 1915 early American Harley Davidson it turned out AWESOME 😎. IN N. PHX, 76' HIGHSCHOOL I was called Motor bike Mike everyone knew who I was . I grew up riding dirt bikes Yz125, 250s, later on in life after my daughter got bigger I started riding, racing, CR500, XR600, XR650 tricked out 10k race bike wrode the hole Baja California 1550 miles in 6days 99', then road bikes 3 different Harley Davidson, Big dog chopper,. After 9 surgery's both shoulders, neck, low back bolted together, of knee,. I don't ride anything but my nice truck , shooting guns is the only hobby I can do now . But it all started riding dirt bikes at 8yrs old ! Your a great guy Buddy.
My dad has a lawnmower called the "Yard King" and it was a king! He said he won't use it for mowing, so I drive it around crazy! I WANT to make it a race mower
My grandfather built a wagon with a 55 gallon drum welded on top with a hole in the front for the tongue and hole on top to get in. We would ride it down an inclined alley, with no brakes. I don't think I've ever seen another barrel/wagon contraption, but I'm sure they were out there.
Take the pivot out of the front end and it will handle alot better.. you will get a speed wobble if you dont.. if you take the pivot out of the front end you need to weld the spider gears in the transaxle...its easy .. you can also make it quick steer like a go cart by just drilling one hole in the front steering arm and moving the steering rod closer to the pivot. Nice build. Have fun. Pull the govenor and put some dual pipes on it.. it will sound awesome.
The govenor limits the engines rpm.. the more Rpm's the more top speed.. I have never seen a video on converting the steering. But I can try to explain. Usually there is a steering rod that runs from the steering wheel pivot to the front spindle. We will call it rod A... and another rod that connects the two front spindles..we will call it rod B.. the end of rod A at the front where it hooks the the spindle needs to be moved closer to the spindles pivot.. just drill a hole closer to the pivot..and move the steering knuckle to the new hole.. this will change the steering geometry and make it steer much faster... drill multiple holes if you want this will allow you to play with it until you get where you want it..
Get some of those trunnion bearings for the front spindles. Makes for easier steering. Cheap and easy fix. "Power steering" for your machine. You will love it!
20:04 you didn’t break anything just stalled it. Like putting a car in 5th and popping the clutch except it’s a lawnmower haha. Great video, subscribed!
Give it some gas and the scream I died lmao. I built a early 2000s craftsman into a backyard racing lawn mower for our yard mower racing series 5 of us in the racing club have tracks we built at our houses and we race at each other's track like a touring type racing series and every track is completely different like mine is a huge inside 1/8 of a mile or 1/4 mile out side high banked track in the same shape as pocono raceway and the other track for exame is a small high banked d shape oval, and another one is a road course in dirt and another is a high banked huge inside 1/4 mile oval built in one of his fields on his farm that he uses for private dirt modified and mini sprint and 4 cylinder racing it's a legit racetrack walls caution lights for drivers to see when caution is out flag stand and all it's a full blown dirt oval track in the middle of the field with beautiful red clay that he puts cotton under every time before winter so it's ready to race on in the winter time when the other dirt tracks and asphalt oval tracks are done for the season so we can race our dirt cars or test new cars that we just built for the following season it's pretty cool, the city won't let him turn it into a real racetrack where he races cars like a full season with fans and Alla cuse the city has a ordinance for no new racetracks can be opened or built anymore new only existing ones are allowed to stay once they are gone no more racing down here.
Genuine question, hopefully answered before I start. So the engine pulley, if I’m not using the deck pulley could I cut it off? Get some weight off? Or is it needed?
I have the same one my stock 17 hp I had 6 starters on it and I went to fix the valve because I thought it being really hard to turn over was killing my starters but I snapped one of the valves and now I gotta 20 hp on and I got 19x7x8 atv tires stretched onto the stock rear wheels
Quick question, instead of flipping the pulleys putting the big one in the front, and the small one in the back. What happens if I put a big one in the front and a big one in the back? Good or not good?
the reason these decks go through belts is because people do not adjust them properly, they have brake pads that are released from the pulleys when you engage the blades and these are there so that when you shut the deck off the blades stop spinning quicker. These need to be adjusted and tightened so that they actually release when you engage the deck otherwise they stay trying to stop the pulleys and its so much resistance it just burns up the deck belts all the time, i had one with the same issue and once i adjusted them it works fine now.
Years ago I modified and old Craftsman I got with no engine for nothing. I put a 15hp Briggs in it I changed the pullies engine and trans. I had someone follow me one day to see just how fast it would go. Are you ready for this? It went 27mph but since I did nothing to the brakes or steering it could be scary. I loved it. I did more mods like extending the rear axles out, extended the front spindles to accept the larger rear tires and of course painted it Red/White/Blue. I sold it at auction quite a while later and whoever bought it had no idea how fast it was hope they didn't find out the hard way.
0:49 Random Dark Gray Cat appears out of nowhere from behind his head and is taking lovely walk. 0:57 Dirty white Cat Teleports in between the front tire and the mower deck and looks around to see who is watching before crawling in between the space where the mower deck is lowered enough for a warm nap.
