Enjoying my play time so far. Way early in the game, about to hang out with Hawk soon. I enjoy your passion for Ys games. You certainly solidified this series for me as something I will follow and play for a long time. I got into the series with Oath of Felghana and Celceta, then kind of jumped around to Origins, then Seven, now VIII and IX. Thank you for being so enthusiastic about this series. I completely agree so far with your thoughts. IX has the verticality and speed but VIII seems to have more...heart and wonder. Can't wait to play more! YAY Ys!

I'm really glad that there are guys like you spreading how good of a game Ys is because honestly, this title is criminally underrated.. I'm honestly hoping for the day that Ys gets the worldwide attention, maybe then well get the AAA makeover it deserves.. for now, all we can do as a fan of the game is support Falcom and buy every Ys games to be released..
im in the final chapter now and its amazing, gameplay, story, music, speaking of music they should have made an option to change the battle and boss music to previous ys games for nostalgia, vacant interference from ys7 is still my favorite boss music.
Got into YS 8 from your review and absolutely loved it on the Switch, just played through on normal and took my time doing everything, 60 hours in game it took and got the best ending, what a game. Gona give YS 9 a go next
I like the fact that the graphics improve as you progress further into the game, reminds me of the good old days of seeing the graphics get better over time. that’s old school and I absolutely love it!
I'm about 10 hours into it and I honestly think this is the best Y's game in the series. And I have played all of them too. Thanks for your content, you and Kim are amazing!
Wow, this is a really cool video to have a discussion around. I've been hearing about Ys series since PS1 days but Ys VIII was the first one I finished, and loved it! Currently playing this one and the more I play, the better it becomes. Thank you John!
Just finished Ys 9 at around 37 hours. My first Ys experience and it definitely does get better the farther into the game you go! So good! Purchased Ys 8 the day I finished
I think the gameplay in ys 9 is the best in the entire series. Love the abilities in this game so much fun to putz around and explore. Thanks so much man for getting me into this series years back. One of my favorites now
For me I think in future games I'm really going to miss the "Gifts" in the next installment. Even just being able to run up walls was a game changer for this series. I also agree that even though it starts out with the impression of being a very "dark" game with the red moons, gothic style, and the Lemures in the Grimwald being a tad frightening at first, but this game really lightens up as you get to know the people and explore the world and as usual Adol brings everyone together and things become really lighthearted.
It's because of you (and Game Sack) that I got into this series, buying every entry that I could. I don't really have the means to play older games, but if Falcom keeps porting the handheld versions to modern consoles, I'll scoop them up! Ys deserves it's success, and any version you can get now is so worth your time and money!
I really loved the cast of characters in this one. Every character felt really cool and fun to play. I usually stick to mainly playing as Adol and it was quite the opposite this time around. Shout out to all my fellow Hawk fans.
I just finished it and agree with all your points! The island mystery of Ys 8 just was so special and unique, and the slightly better music just puts it above 9 for me. That said, I really loved 9 and loved additions of the character abilities!
Ys IX is pretty good, I really enjoyed it! Love that they gave an arc for every party character! I think Ys always makes people skeptical about the new combat like moving from the stabbing system to the jump/hack n slash combat to the party system... I love the series and the gameplay is always fun and the bosses so good!!! To me Ys is the benchmark for action RPGs!! Ys IX is the most RPG of all the Ys series! 9 is so much 8 but still works!! I share the same opinion about Ys 8 and 9, 8 is a tad better because the island made it more of an adventure and discovering uncharted territories! For music, I think 9 has more great tracks than Ys 8 or Celceta but doesn't have the best tracks compared 8 or 7... Still a fantastic soundtrack! Playing Ys makes me feel like when I was kid imagining myself going for adventures when going to new places doing kids stuff!! Ys 9 is must play!! Thanks for the review!
I'm playing through Ys8 and I really like it so far. A while back, I played Ys 9's demo and I wasn't a fan of the camera controls. After watching your review I think I'm going to give it another chance and perhaps Pick the full game up after I finish my playthrough of Ys8.
Im 21 hours in and loving the game. The gameplay is top notch and traversing the city is amazing. This is a slow burn of a game, takes a while to get going but once it starts rolling its pure class. Some of those boss battles are jaw dropping. Ys is a superb series which you have got me hooked on and for that I'm eternally grateful.
Wow, I can agree like 100% with your opinion. Maybe the best Ys story so far, but there is so much dialogue (especially optional NPC dialogue) which really kills the pacing. It almost feels like a Trails game, but that's not what Ys should be about in my opinion. Next on please an Ys 5 remake, Adol all alone in a more like Felghana game would be awesome.
I have to thank you because I never play a YS game in till 8 and I fell in love with the game and my first video that I saw was yours, now I have, origin, celceta, 8 and 9
I really wouldn't recommend it on Switch as PS4 already had some serious performance issues inside the city walls. Pretty much anywhere else PS4 was fine. I really don't think Switch is powerful enough.
I was nervous about this game going in because I heard a lot of people who played the Japanese version say that the game was incredibly mediocre, but in the end it turned out to become one of my favorite Ys games! In fact, I'd probably say that it's the best game in the series to release since Dawn of Ys. I think the era from Origin to Memories of Celceta was kind of rocky in terms of quality for the series, so it's really awesome to see Ys VIII and IX give the series a comeback and set a new quality standard. I'm so excited to see the Ys V Remake/Ys X in the next couple of years!
Just beat this game after 36 hours and I love it🤘🏻VIII is still my favorite (that game is sacred to me haha) but IX is a very solid entry with some amazing combat
I like how the game developers adopted the good things in YS VIII into YS IX. Though I would have loved to have more people for the Dandelion just like the survivors in YS VIII. But the story is so good and has been my favourite YS game so far! And the mechanics in beating the final boss was a pleasant surprise (instead of the usual button mashing)!
I got into the Ys series because of this channel, so far I’ve played Origin, Memories of Celceta, Lacrimosa of Dana, and just finished Monstrum Nox the other night, I honestly can’t decide wether I like Dana or Nox more, they’re both fantastic games, but I agree with a lot of your opinions here. I actually didn’t mind the more dialogue heavy stuff personally, maybe just cause I got so used to stuff like that playing Trails of Cold Steel 1-4.
A Jeremy Parish video, Retro RGB weekly update, and an Y's video from Johnny today. We're going to look back on these times as a golden era of retro gaming content.
After playing Ys Monstrum Nox, I have to say it was awesome. It stands on the foundations stabilized by Lacrimosa of Dana in terms of mechanics and character interactions but the means of traversal through Balduq and Gllia is where it evolves. The characters are colorful, providing contrast to the bleak and oppressing Prison City. I think the best comparison in regards to the story is Tales of Berseria. Sure, it's subject matter can be considered mature but it still retains its core tenents. It's smaller in scope to Lacrimosa of Dana but it's a more focuses experience. Had a great time and will be getting it again for Switch and GOG.
Never played Ys. But i remember hearing stories in the past about its difficulty. Plus over time it's grown. Always been the rpg underdog. I totally relate with too much dialog / versus exploration.
I bought Ys VIII a month ago, didn't start it until a few days ago, I just got back in from getting Ys IX, haven't completed VIII yet, I just want to be ready to switch from VIII to IX. VIII is fantastic, 30 hours in and Im still amazed at the content included.
The reason the balduq city is good is because you get to know it bit by bit for every chapter. The fact that it is blocked off and not "open world" is what made the progression good. It's a fantastic design choice that is fantastically implemented and supports both the story and the characters. It synergises so freaking well - that is part of what makes ys 9 so darn good. It's how the small bits magically comes together to create a greater sum. I am 100% sure anyone who loves jrpgs and rates ff7 and botw and such games as their favourites will love ys 9 like i did.
I played 6 Ys games in 2020, it's now one of my favorite series. I put about 60 hours into Ys 9 and loved it but I think 8 I still my favorite. There's only one thing I'd love to see in a future Ys title and that's deeper rpg mechanics. I would absolutely KILL for Ys to have a more robust loot system and skill trees. I love rpg systems you can sink your teeth into and I'd love to see Falcom implement that in Ys.
have being a fan for Ys since high school, it's the series that makes me know about Nihon Falcom and it's game. (Apparently right now I love their other long running series, TLoH more than Ys now, but I'm still really excited about ys9)
I really liked 8, I played 1 and 2 on pc because of your videos, and then celceta then 8, and so far I have liked each one better then the last I hope 9 isn't to far of a step back from 8.
I’ll never forget Playing Memories of Celcetta for the first time back when I got a Vita!! I played that game nonstop from beginning to end, and then Immediately playing it again on Nightmare to Platinum it!!

YAY Ys!
The verticality is SO GOOD in this game. I can't put it down. Same with the 3D Mario style collectibles in each zone. LOVE IT
I've never played an Ys game and I going to do what you said, start with 8 and 9. Love your channel👍
Great video! Got into Ys because of you and channels like Gamesack.
Playing through Memories of Celceta and gonna start this one once I'm finished, super excited!
I'd love to see some of the older games get ported to modern consoles as well!
YS IX is my first and honestly I love it. I also played Dragon Quest XI because of you as well and also loved it. Thank you for spreading the awareness and love for these series.
I have found so many great games thanks to Happy Console Gamer. This is who I always watch review games, because, he truly is spoiler free. I’ve seen him talk about a few of the Ys games I guess I will finally take the plunge today and purchase my first one. Thanks HCG for consistently publishing quality content!
Finally It Came Out!! But Johnny, not on a Tuesday at work bro!! Now I gotta wait all day to actually watch it!
Enjoying the heck outta of it so far. 20+ hours in.
I’m a long time LOH/Trails fan but got into Ys from watching your channel, just started Ys9 and loving it so far.
this is the review we all were waiting for. thanks!
hey, it would be amazing if you could do like a “ranking all Ys games” video. would be very helpful for newcomers such as myself to decide which ones to venture first!
cheers
I'm really glad that there are guys like you spreading how good of a game Ys is because honestly, this title is criminally underrated.. I'm honestly hoping for the day that Ys gets the worldwide attention, maybe then well get the AAA makeover it deserves.. for now, all we can do as a fan of the game is support Falcom and buy every Ys games to be released..
im in the final chapter now and its amazing, gameplay, story, music, speaking of music they should have made an option to change the battle and boss music to previous ys games for nostalgia, vacant interference from ys7 is still my favorite boss music.
Thanks to this channel i bought my first YS game and i loved it😁👌🏻
Johnny your channel introduced me to ys with 8, great content like always
Got into YS 8 from your review and absolutely loved it on the Switch, just played through on normal and took my time doing everything, 60 hours in game it took and got the best ending, what a game. Gona give YS 9 a go next
I like the fact that the graphics improve as you progress further into the game, reminds me of the good old days of seeing the graphics get better over time. that’s old school and I absolutely love it!
I never heard of the YS series before i started following your channel and now i bought YS VIII and YS origin and i love it thanks big man 😌
I'm about 10 hours into it and I honestly think this is the best Y's game in the series.
Thanks Johnny, had waited for your final thoughts Ys IX
Your channel is one of my favorites. Thanks for always uploading quality content!
Would you say the game is Ysy?
It's quite Ysy on normal (no joke) play on hard for a challenge first playthrough
Now I am definitely interested
You have definitely gotten me interested in Ys games, seen all your videos about it now 😊🙏🏻👍🏻
I played Ys VIII after watching your review of it and I absolutely loved it. Can't wait to play Ys IX.
Cool! I played 8 and it was a great experience for me, I'll give this one a try for sure :D
Y've been an Ys fan since the early 90's.
Can't wait to try this one.
The first 20 minutes of this game was just fiddling with the camera settings. They're crap by default but it allows for a lot of tweaking.
Ooooh I've been waiting for this video. I got the game at launch and was hoping thered be a new video! So Far I'm loving it
SOLD!!!! Downloading it now from psnetwork......looking forward....great review, as ever...keep on keepin on !! xx
Getting this friday was literally looking last night for your review.
Comes out in 2 days for the switch. I'm so excited! Cant wait to play this.
I have to thank you because I never play a YS game in till 8 and I fell in love with the game and my first video that I saw was yours, now I have, origin, celceta, 8 and 9
I really hope this plays well on the Switch, starting to wish I got it on the PS4
Why not both, especially since the switch version is still a few months away?
Keep it sealed for switch, play on ps4
The biggest highlights for me were the exploration, the creative dungeons, and the boss design.
Just beat this game after 36 hours and I love it🤘🏻VIII is still my favorite (that game is sacred to me haha) but IX is a very solid entry with some amazing combat
playing this after ys 8 is so cool. theyre like 2 halves of a whole with its themes
By far the best dungeon level design in Ys, love the verticality
Johnny, a message from your JRPG audience. Play. Trails. In. The. Sky. Thank you for your time.
Aye I started with falcon with that game. Slow starter but well worth it.
Ys 9 was amazing, i collected everything, tried different builds, and got the ultimate last weapons it was an amazing experience
I'm playing through the game right now and enjoying it very much. Good review! I totally agree w/ your thoughts.
I got the special deluxe edition on order for the Switch. I cant wait. 😎
Just curious because you said you played the japanese version of dragon quest 11 and ys9: can you read Japanese?
I like it when you buy it day one edition they give you little add ons like soundtrack or alittle art books
I kind of like the city setting. It feels cramped compared to other Ys games, but it's a welcome change for once and it fits the story well.
Is the map system confusing like the one in Ys 8? I got used to it but it was the only weak point for me.
Wayy better! not multi layered!
Finally!!!!Thank you Johnny. Big fan of this series.
I’ll never forget Playing Memories of Celcetta for the first time back when I got a Vita!! I played that game nonstop from beginning to end, and then Immediately playing it again on Nightmare to Platinum it!!
