Just because the PS4 version of Ys IX got a patch that makes it run at 4K and 60fps doesn't mean that a native PS5 port isn't capable of improving the visuals. The question is does it? and in what ways?

I haven't played an Ys game since the Sega Master System version, which was awesome. Some things appear to have changed since 1988. I am absolutely intrigued as to why Adol gets shot with a green laser bullet and instantly turns emo. Who's the girl wearing her knickers on the outside? Why is everyone cosplaying as the Phantom of the Opera? There's a lot going on here.
Your port reports are some of the best on TH-cam, but this clearly requires further discussion. Are we getting a review or story recap at some point? A massive Ys retrospective? I am entranced.😮
I mean it still got some arcadey ass combat, Ys9 even more so than ys8 since you gain the super form/attacks much quicker but they drain when you're not fighting so you gotta stay on the move to make use of it
Story wise adol gets cursed with edgy vampire powers and a cool demon arm but the price is being unable to leave the city and its surrounding areas
the opera masks were DLC I threw on to make it easier to tell which was the PS5 footage when editinglol
I have been tempted to make a ys retrospective/lore video ever since some friends of mine had a "discussing ys lore with the bois" joke going for a while but that would be quite the undertaking
@@Kraftium It would be a massive undertaking. Maybe when you're done with the "Play A Real SMT Game" series. I keep a notebook around just to write ideas when they pop into my head for script or video ideas, so I'm sure you probably do something similar. Just developing the criteria for comparison would be a good start. I think even just answering the fundamental question "What makes this a Ys game?" is the hardest part, since it's been through so many iterations over the decades, because I can assure you that my idea of what Ys is varies drastically from yours.
Anyways, great video. You just always seem so relaxed when you do these. I don't know if it's because you rehearse or you just have a talent, but it's probably your best attribute as a content creator.

glad you're liking them, they're pretty easy to make and it seems they resonate with enough people since I'm filling a niche, sadly alot of ps5 ports of anime games are pretty lack luster unless there popular enough that digital foundry would actually cover them

If this version had the co-op mode from the PC version, then it would be really easy to recommend this over the PS4 version.
Sadly ys9's co op is basically just the same as ys8s and is like a weird little chop shop version that was thrown into the PC port as a bonus
@Kraftium Ys 9's co-op is quite a bit more polished than 8's. You can actually activate it straight from the in-game settings instead of changing launch options, and player 2 has their own skills HUD. I thought it would be good enough to include in the PS5 as a good selling point, but oh well. Maybe in the Switch 2 port. lol

nothing quite like finding out the rendering resolution like pasting a screenshot in MS paint and drawing right angle triangles tho haha
Nice job with the video. Ys IX is interesting because its obviously a damn good game but there was expectation following VIII and being how good it is.While the large city was a good idea on paper and they did a nice job you spend too much time there.I think fans want to be in open areas fighting and in dungeons.Personally I think there is too much emphasis on dialog and story now and this started with VIII and its really apparent with IX.Ys works because its not complicated and I don't think cutscenes and dialog between dugeons should take 40+ minutes.Perhaps the tone shift with the design choices it did not meet expectations.I guess thats why X is changing up the formula.Still,VIII is gonna be hard to top.
yeah I've always felt that Ys 9 is a super cool game but if you asked me if I wanted another game in the same style I'd say no without a second thought (tho I would want other open world games to learn from it cos I felt like collectables were perfectly spread about)
I think I get what you mean on story too, I liked Ys8 a bunch but I think thats cos they knocked it out of the park with dana so the more story focusness of it worked (also having a limited number of NPCs who are all actually relevent helpped a bunch too) Ys 9 focused even more on the story side of things an while I liked aprilis and co I wasn't as invested in their plight as dana's, also building up the bar felt significanlty less impactful than building up castaway village
never played this series before. was looking to dip my toes in with 8 (and eventually 9). i've found these review/comparisons very helpful. it swayed me away from buying PS5 versions and just downloading the PS4 version off PS+ Extra.

8 is probably the most well liked of the series (personally I'm more partial to celceta and origin myself but 8 is probably my 3rd fav)
I will warn that the 25-50% mark of the game is pretty slow but once you get over that mountain (both figuratively and literally) it really gets rolling

So far zero issues with the PS4 version (played on PS5).
I think only people that collect physical PS5 games are happy for this port. I'm actually pissed that they released YS8 and 9 for the PS5. As a physical collector myself, I need to buy them again now.

That cowgirl DLC was absolutely essential to me, but I already have it so whatever lol. I hate region or preorder blocked content.

Would've been nice for 120fps support like YS8 has or some kind of frame rate above 60fps to take advantage of for people who have VRR displays.
Hopefully YSX has something like that for the ps5 version.
I get the feeling the only reason we got it on ys8 is cos they had so much headroom with it being a vita game at its core
no idea if falcom will have it for ys10 but I wouldn't expect it purely depends on how they use the new engine to buff visuals
@Kraftium Kind of makes you wonder how the Switch version will be but by the time it gets localized, Nintendo will probably have new hardware out.

seeing as this is releasing on the same day as tears of the kingdom for me this will be on the back burner for a while, so hopefully this gets a few patches
I knew I was going to completely agree when you said IX was an oddball!! It’s genuinely a good game but it is strange. Ys X seems more in like with VIII, which I’m excited for.

I ordered the ps5 version physical copy as it was the only version i found available.
tbh the PS5 port is just good for the fact it puts more physical copies out there of a game that had a relatively limited run
@Kraftium you are right. Also, I think the ps5 case for this game is fire it matches the artwork
After playing half way of YS X I decided to pause and buy physical copy of this YS 9 deluxe disc for collection reason (bought YS 8 deluxe disc after preordering YS X Asian ver) even though I preordered 9 Ultimate digital on PS4pro back then. IMO YS X is somehow downgraded from both 8 and 9 (all PS5 versions) and I’m so disappointed 😞. It MIGHT have a better image but that’s it, music, story, gameplay and sys are LESS plus only 2 characters, absolutely BORING! 8 is still the BEST and followed by 9 (I’ve played origin, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9 n X plus other falcom RPGs).

Tho personally I'd recommend Ys8 first if its also on sale
Its got an amazing story and is more representative of ys as a whole since 9 is a bit of a shake up for the series in many ways

@@unknown97428 well the trails series is my go to recommendation I think no one has them beat of character writting and world building and one of the few fairly big budget turn based series around (would recommend trails in the sky the most cos its my favourite trilogy and its that start of the series but it can feel kinda old to some so trails from zero or trails of cold steel are both good jumping on points)
(Theres also the remaster for nayuta boundless trails coming soon which is a action rpg pinoff that plays like the some of the older arcadey Ys titles)
Tales of berserias is another one with an absolutely steller cast tho the combat is kinda braindead unless you really take the time to learn combos
Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4 are also 2 very dynamic tactical rpg that are are slept on by alot of people me feels
All of these go for pretty cheap these days and have pretty frequent sales prices
I could rec some more but i dont know what your tastes are out side of a pompom pfp lol

I really don't understand why people think that IX is the odd man out. I'd say that it's truer to Y's roots than is VIII.
Does ys 8 and ys 9 have haptic feedback?
nothing beyond standard controller vibration
Does YS VIII and IX support HDR on PS5?
not to my knowledge, unless you count the PS5s auto HDR stuffs
So...Does it have haptics? All the DlC? Load times better?
No real haptic support from what I can tell
DLC is all there including the pre order stuffs (mentioned closer to the end)
load times are marginally better than the ps4 version on ps5 (ball parking it from memory the intial load goes from like 7 seconds to like 4, and fast travel loads go from like 2 seconds to 1.5)
ys9 , great game, but hoping 10 will actually be a challenge
Yeah no 10 dollar upgrade or free upgrade, 50 dollar upgrade is what makes it a easy pass just stick to ps4 4K 60 for me, so these ps5 ports of this, ys 8, Caligula effect overdose and 2 are for new players even though the number of new players playing it is probably little to none or hardcore fans who willing to chill a lot of money for these ps5 versions physical copies, but this isn’t a high graphical game there no reason there should be any frame rate issue at any part of this port, that just bad optimization for the developer because come on the visual would warrant smooth 60 fps on the ps4 let alone smooth 60 fps with high foliage on ps5 when there are other games with way more impressive in what going on at a smooth 60 fps and high resolution that just on the developer for not optimizing it correctly
so basically save some coin and get the ps4 version if you have a ps5
do cold steel and ys use the same engine?
no cold steel and tokyo xanadu both use the PhyreEngine which was made for vita games thats barely been used by anyone besides falcom since 2015
Ys 8 and 9 use the yameko engine which is one that falcom have been using and updating since the PSP days
Tho for Kuro no Kiseki Falcom have made a brand new engine from the ground up and it seems like Ys X will also be using that one as well
And somehow Ys8 still looks prettier

Ys9 techinally looks the same if not a bit better but the tropical eviroments and colours make ys8 look nicer

I know I say I like how the drab enivorments make the colour of all the effects pop more but I'd still just prefer more colourful enviroments
the game came out at the end of the ps4 gen, and not only looked last gen even then, it had perfomance issues, how could it be this level of a fuck up?
Because the engine that this is built on hasn't seen an update since 2013 or so. And that update was only to allow for use on ps4.
If Sony still supported the engine the way epic still supports unreal, who knows what this engine could be capable of.

If PS5 actually had 8K (or maybe it does who honestly knows), this could have been a native 8K 60fps game perhaps. Edit: Oh right what about 120fps, I don't have such a TV so I forget about that.
Ps5 supports 8k but that's very demanding even for machines with powerful gpu
I didn't liked ys9 cause it felt less polished than ys8 and the clearly put less effort designing most of it aspects
