      Celbidache 1986 version is beyond the Tragedy, no.1 in my mind, the second one is Furtwangler 1943 version, pure Tragedy, others are dwarfs in comparison with these two Titans: one is Zen- Plotinus, the other is a Steiner Theosophist

      @@vijinanadu1962 others aren’t dwarfs at all compared to these interpretations. I actually prefer furtwangler’s 1949 Wiesbaden account over his wartime recording. What I don’t understand is how you can think so highly of both of these interpretations at the same time: they are polar opposites. Furtwängler is extremely flexible in his tempi, so he keeps the flow going and knows which passages should be played faster and which should be played slower, celibidache only ever really goes extremely slow or maybe slower than usual. Celibidache keeps the same tempi

    I really love this last symphony of Brahms so much, especially with the great Maestro Kleiber with the VPO in this timeless and unsurpassed beautiful recording. The perfectly balanced and structured sonata-form of the 1st movement, the deep, dark, tragic, highly artistic last movement and the contrast of the sarcastic sherzo... But the most moving part is the very beautiful, gloomy, yet poetic 2nd movemnt, especiall from 20.53 to 24.15.I once uploaded this work in 2009 and got more than 470'000 Viewers. But one day it disappeared from youtube, most certainly because of copyright reasons. Thank you for uploading this masterpiece in the undisputed best Interpretation.

    • @ottowaldmann1237
      @ottowaldmann1237 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed, the 2nd movement, as it alludes to Schumannesque interludes, is recreated here by Kleiber with poignant attention to each phrase and all those intense exchanges between seemingly conflicting statements...Kleiber appears to stretch the timing, but, actually, he only allows clarity, distinction, the rightful place of the note to assert itself...Here rests Kleiber's unique capacity of penetrating the intent of the composer and, with Brahms, there is such a polyphonic array that only a discerning mind like Kleiber's could render it justice. Sure we would have loved to listen to countless more recordings, but the limited inheritance of his music does not render him at all lazy, G-d forbid, but only selective and we are left at the bequest of Kleiber's own considerate decision as what did appeal to him, what he was convinced that would be a canvas suitable to his creative ethos and for that we must be grateful that he selected what he did....

    The "problem" with this Brahms's Fourth by Kleiber is that it is SO perfect that the music becomes quite a judgment .....
    Others (and among them conductors like Furtwängler or Walter f.ex.) are putting something "more" when they conduct it. Emotion, dream, frustration, hallucination, desire, momentum, anger or delirium ...
    This maybe beautiful, but Kleiber is only giving the pure, pure music out of the score ... and this is so definitive .. this is destiny, fatum.
    This is haunting to me. When I am by my dishwashing machine I am hearing this in my head. When I give some food to my dogs, this music is tsumically invasive in me. This is not sweet, not nice, this is definitive, like my own coming death.

      Wow! I like that statement!!! (Besides, I really understand what you mean - memento mori... "Denn alles Fleisch, es ist wie Gras"...) Just that first movement. I don't think I've heard anything like it, ever. Yet I'm a professional violinist and I have played the piece in many different orchestras over the years. This really is something, truly, out of the ordinary! Exactly as you say, strangely objective, yet not devoid of any emotion whatsoever, they're just so far away... yet, again, and again as you say, haunting... As though Brahms had taken opium while reading Edgar Poe... Nevermore... Last but not least: What an orchestra, and only men, can you believe it! Only objection: The brass chorale in the last movement is a bit too prosaic and dry. Schade, in an otherwise brilliant recording. All this praise lavished on the performance, I'm not sure Brahms would have quite recognized his own work... Food for thought, perhaps.

      Thank you, Lars, for your kind comment.
      I agree with you on all matters.
      (but perhaps just one thing : Brahms was so pessimistic, so depressive and lost that I am believing that he would have been as much destroyed as us listening to this .... this version is indeed the fruit of three suicides : Erich Kleiber, his wife and Carlos; charming, isn't it ? ... )

    • @leoblum0631

      @@Fritz_Maisenbacher Very astute observation. Brahms himself would have been scared to stare death in the eye like this. Yet, the music speaks. Indeed, they were all suicidal (I mean not Brahms, but the rest) , and it is more than fitting that this recording, allegedly, was found in Carlos' Audi, that he demanded as remuneration for a concert, at the moment of his own demise. Dear Fritz, I sincerely believe you hit the head of the nail! This said, I hope Kleiber included the Vienna Philharmonic in his will, because that was the only orchestra, in the world, which truly loved and understood him. I'm just re entering my Brahms phase. My father LOVED this piece so it brings a bit of sadness. I can't seem to get away from Beethoven, no matter what I listen to it plays over and over in my head. Kleiber is exquisite!! But when I listen the Beethoven I can't keep still!. Enough for now, I want to broaden my musical horizons. Thanks

    Is this the version from the Deutsche Grammophon? I mean, do you recorded this from the vinyl record or from where do you got it?

      It is from the Deutshe label. They also have cd s and tapes of the original vinyl version. I've heard the vinyl version in my Uncle's house, and I think it is from there directly.

    For me Brahms inhabits my very being and I have heard this symphony performed many times and have listened to countless recordings. Of course listening is subjective, but I will weigh in here since I know this music so well. This rendition, while commendable, for me, is not the definitive version. Bernard Haitink gets honorable mention here for his wonderful performances of all the Brahms symphonies with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, The Boston Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic. On TH-cam there is an excellent performance of Haitink leading the Chamber Orchestra of Europe at the Proms. Not his best, but it does illustrate his personal stamp on the 4th. But heads above all versions is the 1958 recording by Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony Orchestra also on TH-cam. I do not think the Wiener Philharmoniker in the Kleiber version is quite up to the task. Some may not like the Munch version because of the fast tempo. While Haitink's tempo is a slight bit slower the phrasing by both conductors is outstanding, providing refreshing and innovative interpretations.

    • @fiawlty
      @fiawlty 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not so much Munch's fast tempo as his wayward tempo! There is no denying the BSO commitment to this ultimate classical symphony, but its tragic romanticism calls out for a firm hand on the tempi to save it from indulgence, and this is what for me Kleiber achieves in spades, but what lets Munch down IMHO - the great 4th movement passacaglia doesn't need to be a crescendo as well!

    • @seppstefano
      @seppstefano 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing your views. I just listened to Haitink's BBC version and found it very convincing, detailed and refined. Now listening to Munch, but with all my limits I didn't find it so special,. Not because of tempo, but in some critical at least to me) parts, because of "tension" or a slight lack of. Of course, to each its own..!

    I listened to this in comparison with the Furtwangler 1943 performance also on YT. It became clear that Kleiber seems to be constantly holding back the orchestra, perhaps to extract the last drop of emotional juice. But it doesn't work. Furtwangler obtains even greater passion and intensity but without sacrificing dynamism. Or perhaps Kleiber's orchestra were just feeling a touch sleepy that day?

    This is among the top three greatest symphonies ever written. It's close between this one, Beethoven's 7th and Dvorak's New World Symphony. Brahms had more of a knack for melody writing than Beethoven. He had more feeling in his music, while Beethoven was more of a technician. Beethoven's 5th is exciting, to be sure, but it's rough on the ears. Brahms also wrote the greatest violin concerto, even better than Beethoven's.

      I absolutely agree with this assessment of Brahms’ 4th Symphony; it is truly a masterpiece and without question one of the finest pieces of music in the entire classical repertoire. The 4th is truly special. The more one listens to Brahms, the more the music comes to life as one is pulled into this composer’s brilliant melodies and complex rhythms! Kleiber's DGG recording is excellent and nearly perfect, even though the recording's sound quality seems slightly muted at times. The trade-off for this emotional performance is worth it, and many critics believe this to be one of the finest classical recordings ever made.

      +perl man I think it's an incredibly foolish stance to assume that "classical" music (with quotation marks as classisim itself is merely a period in the tradition of western art music, with Brahms himself belonging to the late romantic period) is good by definition. In fact, I would dare say that not unlike any other genre of music 99% of all produced art music is ranged quality-wise from utterly forgettable to average. Regardless, concerning any piece that I'm not impressed by I still go my way to explain my subjective stance with dignity if honesty. And if you are offended by that then I'm afraid you completely deserve it my dear sir.
