Here's the award-winning 1980 recording of Brahms' last symphony, with Carlos Kleiber conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Kleiber opts for a lean, austere sound, which is greatly structured and highly energetic. It's a cliche, but once you start listening, nothing can distract you from following it all the way to the end. His tempi are fast, and the dramatic climaxes - the coda of the first movement, for instance - are punched home with the greatest vehemence. The final passacaglia movement is simply sensational: Brahms marks it "allegro energico e passionato", and that's exactly what it comes as. Kleiber's grasp of the architecture ensures a tremendously powerful impact.
Brahms began working on the piece in 1884, just a year after completing his Symphony No. 3, and completed it in 1885. The work was given its premiere in Meiningen on October 25, 1885 with Brahms himself conducting.

1: Allegro non troppo (E minor)
2: Andante moderato (E minor/E major)
3: Allegro giocoso (C major [might also be interpreted as E phrygian])
4: movement: Allegro energico e passionato (E minor)

This version's a miracle. I never found such absolute lack of soppiness so utterly (and sexily) goosebumping. His baton's like a broom that, by sweeping away all Brahms-conducting clichés, enables us to hear the work anew

i "discovered" this gorgeous piece of music thirty years ago and congratulated myself on my "discovery" and good fortune.
only recently did i learn from my brother that this happened to be the favorite piece of music of my father, may he rest in peace.

I bought this recording as one of the early digital cassettes, at Tower Records in Seattle. A desert island keeper.
Nope, the tempo is much too fast, sacrificing far too much of the emotional impact this symphony is meant to deliver.

Absolutely fantastic. Simply sublime. You know, this is one of my most favorite pieces of music. This amount of passion. This is exactly how this symphony has to be. I can't think of any other version.
Well, this version is excellent for its audio capture, however the tempo is much too fast and sacrifices the emotional impact the symphony was meant to deliver. Bernstein did not rush through Brahm's 4th, unfortunately the audio capture was bungled on that one. Except for that, it's better than this.
A masterpiece really ... there're very few pieces conducted by Carlos, and every Classic freak should listen to this stuff, let me say.

I have an unhealthy addiction to the first movement of this recording.
+runupahill1There is a sense of the 1st being a tad too 'thought out'. Did Tchaikovsky write anything about Brahms' 4th? I know he didn't exactly warm to Brahms but the extent to which he disliked him leaves me feeling slightly suspicious about the real opinion he had of him. There is the same unquestionable 'carved in stone' (Bach, Mozart, Beethoven) sort of greatness in much of Brahms imo.

As for Tchaikovsky's dislike of Brahms, his criticisms have been quoted by many as an example of one composer's inability to justly appraise the work of another composer. But sometimes one composer writes about another with the insight from being a practitioner of the art of composing music, and nothing but that. I trust the judgments of certain writers and music-lovers who have given me many time-tested reasons for that trust. And when they only confirm what my own ears and mind tells me about certain music, then the case, for me, is rested. I could say more about Tchaikovsky's disdain for Brahms's pretentiousness,
but you can read these opinions for yourself in THE LIFE AND LETTERS OF TCHAIKOVSKY, edited by Rosa Newmarch, (London 1906) There is probably a newer version. I do not know it.
@@alanhill4957 Actually it was due to their different composing skills. Brahms was a master of everything that came before him and his handling of sonata form is something Tchaikovsky could never dream of. That was due to the static way Russians handle songs. Listen to the 1st movement of his 1st symphony. You hear the 1st theme in the tonic and by the end of the movement it really hasn't changed at all. But although Peter never mastered sonata form, he found his own voice by massing different parts of the orchestra stating his themes.
I like the 1st movement of the whole piece the most as well, without doubt. The same goes for Beethoven's 4th, the 1st movement is the best.

Wonderfully put by you. I have this same 'sentiment' about Brahms' final Symphony with this unbelievable, superb, never surpassed finale. And: this symphony is as much a kind of circle in itself ('Ouroboros') as your two sentences of comment constitute. Also: looking back as well as being musically progressive. In a tragic way >> The future does not promise much good. Everything will develop back to its origin. The most human(istic) of symphonies since Beethoven Ninth's ! Not recognized as such. But here, in this rendition by Kleiber-son, it is all there.
This is as perfect as Brahms can be. I cannot imagine a more soulful performance of this gorgeous, melancholy, reverent music. Thank you for posting it.
This is a really fantastic recording. It is wonderful to have the entire 4th Symphony on one video like this, and this particular recording is full of energy and verve. For a long time Brahms' last symphony was my favorite. In recent months this is no longer the case; but that's not because my appreciation for this work has diminished. Rather, my appreciation for the other symphonies has grown as I explore them more. Listen to it from beginning to end - you won't regret taking the time to do so!

This is incredible. My birthday is 2-1-47 and that's where my favorite moment starts.
I was so blessed to have attended VPO performance of this very piece at the Sydney opera house in 2009 when it toured sydney, last of its 4 concerts was broadcasted real time to audiences outside the opera house because lots people could not get tickets to the 4 scheduled concerts. I also have this vinyl recording and the score. Brahms was already old when he composed this work but the music is always fresh and majestic to listen to...

A great symphony with a great interpreter. Each movement is a joy. 1st built on just about 2 notes. 2nd a relaxing respite. 3rd the only scherzo that Brahms placed in a symphony. 4th, what can you say? 30 variations on a great Bach cantata theme in one movement! Plus some of his harmonies border on 12 tone composing, but you'd never know it. Thank you Er Ge for this precious gift!

I agree absolutely. The scoring here is impeccable, and the blend of clarinets and horns is very refined.
When Kleiber recorded this with Vienna Philharmonic the record was considered the best recording by anybody. This was not the tired old Brahms. This is a heroic champion of the Romantic age. Kleiber was full of confidence and organic energy. He was never a man to tell anyone he had produced a great recording, but everybody else did. I always thought i liked Brahms with some fire to it. This faster tempo did it for me. TH-cam has another Brahms sym.4. You see a very tired Kleiber that is a reflection of his great self. A great conductor that did not record enough.
Beethoven's 14th. Wonderful how Brahms took over the mantra of truly profound music. And a huge composer in his own right! Great upload, thankyou!

This is going to remain a benchmark for quite a while!
Kleiber demanded orchestra to sound all differently between main melody, sub melody, and other parts with the volume and articulations. When the music flows, all shape of the sounds have been changed in details and nuances.And he has let the main melody and conversation parts to play with the player's articulation with its own utmost level of expressions. That was why we felt extreme beauties in Kleiber And the other parts should sound not to interfere the main part (as like back screen). Often he repeatedly explain the players how the sounds to come out at every phrase so that the players could share the musical ideas as same as Kleiber thoughts. I believe Kleiber had his job done as the greatest movie directors. We can see all from his conducting in Brahms 2 with VP. Truly he is not only a genius but hard worker to control each and every corner of the orchestra as you can see him in Brahms 2 video. Some people explain his sound is lean and austere than other conductors. Maybe? because he controlled and calculated all with firm musical idea of his own as like movie director's. However main and conversational instruments sounds are never lean, but with great musical expressions.
i've been listening to and obsessde by this symphony for 25 years,still can't work it out but am propelled into a realm of absolute beauty and truth by it every time

Every single time I listen to it I find me travelling deep inside my inner self in a roller coaster of emotions and visions where there's no ultimate landscape and l'm left in a prolonged limbo of joy craving for more like a drug I badly need to have in order to get me through this world

Care to give a source for that quote? The atheist Brahms, quoting God as the source of his ideas? Can't see that being genuine.
@@Quotenwagnerianer I'm no expert, but I understand Brahms said different things to different people at different times. What he said to Dvorak is apparently the most well known. Or I should say, what Dvorak said about him.
@@Quotenwagnerianer He was not an atheist in today's sense of "physicalism," being an avid reader of biblical texts with doubts as to their orthodox interpretations. It's misleading to group such spiritually profound souls into ideological camps. It's obvious to any musician of high caliber that art possesses some form of divine energy, regardless of traditional belief systems. The humanism of his day, of Feuerbach et al, was known to be deeply worshipful of human nature, whether or not it could be called "religious" in a technical sense. It's a much more sophisticated conversation than "yes or no" atheism.

My heart stops so many times in the 2nd movement, beginning with that heavenly cantabile melody over pizzicato strings starting 15:38, which has already had a ravishing preparation of clarinets and horns.

Calos Kleiber conducting the VPO on Brahms 4th is the DEFINITIVE recording. The orchestral presentation in terms of instrumental imaging and soundstage is remarkable. The dynamics, the timbral subtleties, the sweet silky strings and the overall musicality captured by the DGG engineers ranks high in the annals of Audiophile recodings and performances. This is also remindful of Yevgeny Maravinsky conducting Tchaikovsky 4th and Gustavo Dudamel directing (or "demanding") any world-class orchestra

Music flows with essence of expressions. Every phrase has its own life at very high level.Every instrument has it utmost beauty. Even the pause and tempo have great meaning in Kleiber's Brhmas 4. Altogether bring us of how Brham's symponys should be played. Nothing rutine! Nothing boring! Every note has meaningful play by Kleiber and the musician! with full of soul! To achieve this level of music, how far the musicians and Kleiber had to go! It must be very near to the eternal place of God!
Carlos! He, and this performance, are beyond any words of mine. So I'll let my betters, including Carlos himself, do the job for me. Years ago Charles Barber was a student of conducting at Stanford. Against all odds he entered a long term paper-and-tape conversation with Kleiber. His recent book, "Corresponding with Carlos" is indispensable.
It's a great way to pick up chicks, too. Read it at a cafe. Only the very best will come over to ask what you're reading.

kleiber's lecture is the best
Only Ferenc Fricsay, with more or less the same approach and ability, could have reached the same level. Alas, he died too young. His Beethoven is superb. Take e.g. his rendition of the Ninth's (DG, 1958).

Heard a moving story on NPR about Brahms attending a performance of this one month before he died. Never really heard a full Brahms symphony until now. It is beautiful. Listen to movement 1 again, and tell me there isn't a resemblence to John Wiliams's score for Star Wars. The soft, descending strings toward the end especially.

I wish Kleiber had recorded more often. His performances were critically claimed and his interpretations often controversial.
The same applied to his father, Erich.
It's a part of Kleiber's flair. Had he recorded more, his performances wouldn't have been in demand. This is why Kleiber was regarded so highly, because he would perform in public less often.
