It is as though Bernstein wants us to hear and love every single note, it’s attack, it’s fullness, and it’s closure. Such a loving performance.

I love everything I've ever heard composed by Brahms. His last two symphonies are to die for. This Fourth is played at the right tempo. In recent years, some conductors insist on too-fast tempos. This is especially true of interpretations of the Mozart 35th and 39th Symphonies.

This was my favorite piece of classical music, then I forgot it's name and couldn't find the video any longer. It haunted me. Finally, three years later I've finally found it again and now every note feels like a new experience and meeting an old friend altogether. I'm crying with joy.

Magnificent! The first time I heard this symphony I was 15. It was performed in London by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antal Dorati. That was 60 years ago and I have loved this piece above all others ever since. Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic take it to a new level. Just magnificent!

Like a profound longing to embrace the joy of life yet constantly fighting depression every step of the way. Shubert was his teacher but Schubert suffered of serious mental illness which at the end he was institutionalized because he lost his marbles. I love this composition because it transmits passion, soul ache, anger, frustration. Just a lovely musical piece.
Also after Schumman was institutionalized he stayed with her and her 15 children. In those times things like that were frowned upon, the scarlet letter given only to women

Of course as a pianist I am still in awe of the "simple" works by Brahms and their incredible beauty - the Intermezzos, Ballades, etc. You have to wonder where all these melodies come from? The Fourth Movement is one of the greatest in the symphonic literatuture - magisterial is the only word to describe it.

This is a sentimental interpretation, the orchestra lets the emotion flow and it's a moving performance.

I think it's a marvelous, and somewhat unorthodox, performance! "Sentimental" connotes saccharinity, and Brahms never crosses the boundary, nor do I think Bernstein does in this performance.

+marcelouz1 Do you really mean tragic. I think it starts off tragic and then hauls itself back from tragedy. It's always struck me as the most uplifting symphony of the lot! Isn't musical ambiguity great!

I'd like to know how that shattering double-tempo e minor cadence at the end can be described as uplifting. Bernstein said it was "a clenched fist raised in hot defiance to the heavens" and I can't agree more.

To the listener who was confused about first movement being in 3/4: Brahms is famous for his stretto- if in a three pulse, it can be stretched into a 4/4 sometimes over two full bars or measures. More over, for Brahms, there is very seldom a clear cut metronome beat- you often cannot even find the beat. That is why the 3/4 is very confusing to 'feel the pulse' with. He does the same to cadences- he'll stretch it and stretch it and end up with a deceptive cadence or Italian going into a V7 or a diminished 7th and modulate to another far flung key. Chopin is sort of similar, but he does similar things on a piano. A classical musician.

Do check out Bernstein's excellent musical analysis of the 1st movement made way back in the early 50's. It's a splendid example of Lenny as the consummate teacher, speaking from the piano, with orchestral excerpts mixed in. Audio only.
