Very many interesting comments. I remember this concert like it was yesterday. Here a short report how Maestro Celibidache prepared this unique concert in Tokyo. This live concert was recorded by NHK Japan, it was prepared and organized by Mr. Amano. As you can see on the film: there are no visible microphones, no extra lighting, no visible cameras. Nobody of the filming and recording team was allowed to be seen or be walking around during the performance; the NHK team had no chance of "rehearsing" the filming, there was no "run-through" before; the team was only allowed to attend the regular rehearsal the day before. For many reasons this performance of Bruckner 8th was one of the most memorable performance of this symphony under Celibidache and the Munich Philharmonic.
The day after that performance, at the next rehearsal, he greeted the orchestra with the words: "Thank you very much for a beautiful concert yesterday! We played better than we are". This seemingly silly or funny comment had a deep meaning: the concert was not an addition of 100 good players playing together correctly. We reached a much higher level by creating a unity and harmony, all only serving the beauty of the composition and not showing off an addition of individual brilliance. (More in my book "Memories of 17 years under Maestro Celibidache as principal bassoonist of the Munich Philharmonic", only English manuscript available from edelmann@edelmann-rust.com)
About the timpanist Peter Sadlo: he was one of the best timpanist I ever knew; he was always perfectly in tune, he could make the instrument sound like a pizzicato of a double bass, his rhythm was phenomenal (look at Celibidache's rehearsal of Beethoven 9th); the sound was always round and beautiful even in fortissimo; and most of all, he could match beautifully to the rest of the orchestra in creating a unity of sound with everybody. Sadlo was a great virtuoso soloist, so sometimes he had the tendencies to be too loud in relation to the rest of the orchestra, which caused a lot of conflicts with Celibidache. But in the end Celibidache convinced Peter Sadlo about the efforts to BLEND with the complete orchestra and the phenomenal results you can hear in this Bruckner Symphony.

I went to the two performances of Bruckner 8 that were in Paris in about 1987-8. I never thought of his performances as "slow." I just got into his rhythmic pulse that was rock solid. He always avoided that "gear change" that some conductors impose from bar 690 4th movement. (Nowak edition) Hence everything was inexorable in its truth.

This unparalleled and inimitable version of the Bruckner 8 is positively addictive. Listened to it 100s of times over the last 6 or 7 years, never found any better. I like the youtube version even better than the EMI CD - I know, not the same performances - adds to the experience to see the musicians in action (as some other comment reads they are indeed "fucking gold"). Especially the Fourth Movement gets me every time - doesn't sound as good in the hands of anyone else. I wish this could be played at my funeral. One of the few regrets I will take to the grave is that I was quite often in Munich in the 80s and 90s, but too ignorant then to have ever assisted in a life performance.

Grazie per aver richiamato il suo ricordo come diretto testimone dell'arte di uno dei grandi del 900.

Also, According to Anthony Camden, half the orchestra were in awe of him, while the other half couldn’t stand his rehearsal techniques. Is that true?

Peter Sadlo: An infant's racket on his mother's cooking pots signalled the start of Peter Sadlo's clear and extraordinary career, all based on his exceptional talent in the area of percussion. At the age of twelve years, he began studies at the prestigious "Meistersinger-Konservatorium" in Nürnberg. Shortly after, another decisive event occurred in the life of the talented drummer; acceptance into the "Musikhochschule Würzburg" where Sadlo met the doyen of german percussion art at that time, Siegfried Fink, who would support and mentor him. In 1982, when Peter Sadlo was only 20 years old, he accepted the position of solo timpanist at the Munich Philharmonic. There, for the second time, Peter Sadlo would meet a master who would strongly influences his future development: Sergiu Celibidache, the charismatic conductor of the Munich Philharmonic. In time, the two would develop a powerful common musical understanding.

I find that most performances of Bruckner's Symphonies are expedient and poorly prepared attempts at making sense out of demanding scores. I can only imagine the patience and time needed to peel the layers and produce the majesty we hear with Celibidache. I've been listening to this performance since the 1990s and I still regard Bruckner's Eight by Celibidache the crown jewel of symphonic music, in sophistication, depth and eloquence unmatched since. I apologize for the superlative, such is my enduring enthousiasm for the beautiful minds of Bruckner and Celibidache.

I have to admit that I had never heard of Celibidache untill now. But anyone who can conduct music at the level of Bruckner without a score is okay in my books. I find that, despite the complexity of Bruckner's symphonies, their is a lucidity there, a sense of inherent light throughout. I'm not much of a conductor myself, having only taken a summer course in the basics, but I love hearing the different ways conductors treat a score. I like what I hear here.

I’m still trying to understand this symphony. I love most of the other Buckner symphonies from #3 forward, but this does not (yet) move me emotionally. I will keep listening from time to time until it begins to move me.

@@peterruark645 I have had the same problem since I was an adolescent. I love the centre two movements but can't work out the forms of the outer two. The material just doesn't seem able to justify the length of time accorded to it. The finale just seems to be all stop start episodes with no binding narrative. It reminds of that quote re. Wagner "fine moments but bad quarter hours". I have read somewhere that the finale is Bruckner's most complex formal set out but I just can't get it to hang together.

Celibidache's Bruckner interpretations are definitely a cut above the rest with the exception of Furtwangler in my opinion. As great as this interpretation is, Furtwangler's1944 recording with the VPO is far better, probably the greatest Bruckner recording of all time. Highly recommended.

It's remarkable he can conduct such long symphonies without the score - that, even for a musician, is quite a feat of memory. His slower tempi work with Bruckner and he has an acute sense of dynamic balance. I love how, at the end, he congratulates the orchestra, shakes hands, etc. and only after that does he turn to face the applause. Multumesc maestro Celibidache.

Outstanding performance! I've watched this many times and never cease to be moved by Celibidache's command of his orchestra. With the slightest of gestures, he has the Munich Philharmonic in his hands. No indulgence, no self-awareness, just a very calm way of conducting and the smoothest unfolding of Bruckner's 8th (there couldn't be a better way to get into Bruckner's universe than this). At the end of the performance, Celibidache's body language tells it all. He is first and foremost with his players, standing at their side, barely looking at the audience, giving thanks for the most spiritual of performances. I've seen and heard this symphony performed by many other conductors and no one comes close. Truly a memorable concert.

This conductor, I am ashamed to say, is new to me. A very late discovery. Better late than never: this is without a shadow of a doubt the best Bruckner I have ever heard. His control over the players is phenomenal; the attention to detail; the wonderful balance throughout the orchestra, the togetherness of the pizzicati (always a problem), but above all that glorious sound! The Scherzo kind of sums up what people both love and hate about Bruckner. The haters says it's repetitive. And in many ways they are right, Bruckner is repetitive. And in a bad performance that repetition can be boring and tedious. But in a great performance that very repetition is what gives it it's driving power. That churning figure in the Scherzo builds up energy like a spring and drives the music on like a train climbing a mountain, all the time producing some of the most powerful music written for an orchestra. Give me Bruckner's repetition any day! :)

But once hearing his performances of Bruckner [as well as pretty much anything else!] he is unforgettable. This symphony calls you yourself up, and the whole of your life, such that it is. And there it is, in your heart your mind your eyes, the triumph, the defeats, the monumental depths of grief, every experience, and the music of Bruckner (of God?) calling you to question everything you are. And to cherish yourself as a child of God. Read the comments here, and see how many times people visualize this musical experience as a spiritual one.

Many conductors, even some of the great ones, specialize in certain composers and don't interpret some of the others as well. Case in point is George Szell. His Beethoven is absolute perfection. His Brahms is a bit too shallow in my opinion and seems to lack the bottom heaviness and the lyricism that was characteristic of Brahms.

Wow, what an amazing performance. It's like the music is unfolding while time is standing still.
For years I only had the Nagano recording so I'm used to a long performance so the additional 11 minutes compared to that didn't bother me. Still, it's a far cry at the other end of the spectrum from the Paita recording, at an incredibly svelte (some might say anorexic) 74 minutes.
Maestro is adept at making sure we hear every note Bruckner wrote and has a sure hand at making the musical logic inescapably obvious. The Munich Philharmonic plays beautifully (the timpanist is a standout) and the recorded sound is excellent.
