@@VirtualRealityOasis I think they're too early for their own good. If a 1080 Ti is the minimum GPU you'll need and a vast majority of people don't own one and won't be able to afford anything that powerful anytime soon, they're not going to sell a lot of headsets when their competitors are selling headsets for half the price that people can already use with their current setup.
@@CarbonatedTurtle how can that be the realistic minimum.. 2560x1440 vs my 1440x1440 but im using an fx8350 and gtx 1060 and perfectly happy. pretty sure games should run fine on a 1080/1080ti/2070/2080/2080ti/amds new and future cards.. or even on a 1070 it should be acceptable if you dont mind not maxing everything.. if it cant do it theres something else wrong.. bad optimization/ reprojetion/ i dont know..
Mike.....as usual this was a no BS review! A 1080ti as entry level for this headset sounds about right to me and we all appreciate your honesty, integrity and hard work. Keep it up man!
Yeah a 1080ti barely cuts it for my vive if I want to use enough super sampling to make text even remotely legible. Without any SS, games like fallout 4 still can’t keep a solid 90 FPS and with the motion soothing stuff that valve rolled out, reprojection just makes a rubber-band fest. The bigger FOV looks awesome to me even with the distortion on the edges, but there just isn’t a GPU that can push these frame rates
@@AetherProwl yeah, i run a version of steam vr from late last year to avoid those issues. only sometimes switching back and forth to the latest version and quickly switching back..
@@VirtualRealityOasis Out of curiousity, if you chose to play games at much lower resolutions and graphics settings on the Pimax 8K, wouldn't the higher field of view and lower SDE still make it a technical upgrade to the Oculus?
Beware of this company. There is no return policy anywhere on their website. I was sent a defective one and they are ignoring my requests for a refund. They also have not yet offered a replacement. They did ask for me to send a video of the problem?! I will probably have Visa reverse the charge. Mine was a preorder.
@@doc-holliday- Yes I was a bit nervous buying overseas. I was thinking that I could sell it on Ebay where they go for more than retail if I didn't like it, but lucky me, i get a bad one. Visa is now processing my charge back. I'll bet the company suddenly notices me. If a company gets too many charge backs, Visa will actually block them.
@MDSsystems Thats actually not true. Although China is indeed one of the worlds largest exporters, very few of those exports are highly technical commodities. @@rasta77-x7o Technically speaking the advanced tech does exist, has for awhile. Just not practical to drop $50k worth of tech in a headset and expect someone to buy it. So, we wait while these corporations develop cheaper alternatives.
Great video... Being somewhat new to VR myself, I probably wouldn't get one of these. However, I am grateful for this because I think VR is amazing and every innovation is a step closer to very hi resolution, commercially viable, commonly attainable VR. And the more people who use VR, the more money will be invested in to it; thereby, increasing the quality of the products available to all of us.
Same as my feelings. The more universally adopted VR becomes the more that will be invested in it and we'll start to see far more titles popping up including AAA. Personally I'm holding off on an upgrade until I see what Oculus is doing on their next main headset after they release the Rift S. If you haven't heard of deep focus yet, I think you'll find this an exciting read on what we can expect soon with VR. www.oculus.com/blog/introducing-deepfocus-the-ai-rendering-system-powering-half-dome/
I have a 5k+. First thing I found was if I push the bottom out about 2cm distortion was all but gone on Large FOV. This will also help with sitting on your nose. I also think the distortion is easy to pick up on cause the rest of the lenses is almost flawless. Coming from anything besides “oculus made” the distortion is really not a problem. Vive is incredibly blurry, odyssey has distortion itself.
I think you mean Odyssey plus which has anti SDE lenses which are like looking through Vaseline coated lenses. The Original Odyssey has none of those problems, i know because i have one.
I only use Normal FOV but did lower the DAS on the base and adjust the strap higher to get the lift off of my nose (i have a pronounced bump) and can play way too many hours of Skyrim. I will see about the large fov but even normal is wider than my glasses.
I have put two vive wide face foams on mine. This has made the headset more comfortable especially on the nose. It completely removed distortion unless i crank my eyes to the side.
First 3D print some pieces to make the VR comfortable.. Next apply some foam to the headset to be able to wear it.... Now lets see how difficult it is to setup... HAHA okay :D
The problem was Sweviver used it for months and tested on different gpu's and Mike for half a day. He should have talked about the default normsl FOV is a sliver smaller and there is no distortion. My 1080 runs everything I have thrown at it except the Nvidia fun house demo. Since brainwarp came out I can play even Hellblade at normal graphics and 72fps and it runs smooth. My complaints would be I wish the IPD did go down to 58mm and the black levels on dark games (not high contrast dark like Beat Saber and Elite Dangerous) but Horror titles and some parts of Skyrim get a muddy gray.
As someone who has tried all headsets and Pimax at every iteration and all the existing competitors (sorry StarVR and Xtal are not viable competitors) I can say the 5k+ is the best existing headset in my experience. Cons: Need Vive Lighthouses and controllers Vive controllers in general Not lower IPD than 60 Black levels in dark areas of games (not contrast high games like Beat Saber and Elite Dangerous) Buggy in Steam on occasion that requires full computer restart. Headstrap. Cord should be 5ft longer To close to lens. Glasses can touch. Even my eyelashes. touch lens. Need thicker padding. God Rays exist but much less than Vive. Tiny sweet spot. Need to get it just right. No wireless option at this time. You will love it and if you state so online be criticized by commentors as a shill by people who never tried it, didn't optimize it, seem to hate Chinese companies or had a problem about the name "8k". PROS: Runs 99% of VR games on 1080 and even 1070 especially with brainwarp (72fps and 60ishfps run smooth and for me and (my severe motion sickness) no perceivable difference to 90fps... Sorry Linus Huge game changer FOV of 150 degrees in normal. Wider than my glasses. And huge top and bottom. A sacrafice of few cm difference to remove distortion. Surprisingly Pitools. Ran great and out of box to playing took 45 minutes. SDE is minimal compared to Rift. Sharp. When you do find the sweet spot your eyes can dart around and things are legible. With Vive i found myself moving my head to look at everything. Here I just move my eyes. Light. Headset is much lighter than Vive. TBD: Knuckle like controllers Wireless option Deluxe headstrap Motion leap hand tracking (works great when tried and glad they support it but will developers support it?) Build quality. I haven't had a problem and dropped it twice. No cord issue or dead pixels. Plastic and everything seems fine to me. The final conclusion: First Gen 2 headset (5k+ not 8k... just didn't enjoy the pixel arrangement) If Vive owner easy upgrade choice. Otherwise it might be better to wait until their controllers and base station comes out. Just don't try it. It will ruin 110 degree headsets for you. Love a company that went for it and listened to us who tried it back in June and delayed launch. If VR is to succeed we need to support the companies that push it forward for consumers and not enterprise.
i'm pretty sure facebook announced that rift 2 was on hold so that they could focus on standalone vr. I'm probs gonna switch to vive once they get knuckle controllers.
@@Tomauwu iirc they're making a Rift S with a higher resolution. Which is nice because my God is the resolution not spectacular. But the lower resolution plays nice with my GTX 1070.
I got my 5K plus a couple weeks ago and I think it works really well. My main complaint is the comfort of the temporary strap they provide. I bought the 5K plus by itself as an upgrade to my Vive so I already have the necessary components as well as the deluxe audio strap. I use a GTX 1070 and haven’t had any issues playing beat saber, Skyrim VR and other games. I also got my pi tool from the main website so maybe things have changed since then. Regardless, the whole set up and installation could be a little smoother
Brainwarp on the latest makes games run smoother. It has glitches in the menu though. Choppiness, black lines appears. It's why they took it down games are butter on my 1080.
The pimax brand has come a long way! It's nice to see that we have alternative products to the mainstream. Especially ones that push the boundaries for the Enthusiast vr peeps out there.
Yes push those larger companies from their little incremental improvements or nothing at all cough *oculus* cough. ... yes I hope people buy the Quest but I need gen 2 not mobile version.
Great review. I got my 5k+ this week too and I'm suffering from eye strain. It's a fantastic experience but eye strain may be the killer for me. I also confirm that anything below a 1080GTX is not going to work. I had a 980Ti and there was no way I could get the fluidity VR demands with it. Deep pockets are also a must for this headset as it doesn't come with everything you need to get this running properly.
Glad to see the VR market is stepping into the direction of high FOV. Because frankly, its essential if you want a truly immersive experience. I'll be picking up a pimax headset in a few months when i do my annual PC upgrades most likely, hope to see more high FOV competition in the future. 1 step closer to my dream of escaping reality into a full movement VR MMORPG (essentially SaO).
It seems like Mike is the only honest reviewer about distortion that pimax has. I sold 5k because distortion feels like looking through the fishtank. Steve Bishop said "other headset has it too so is pimax" and he ended up the statement. I guess he doesnt want to say pimax has much bigger distortion than any other headset
I'm using EVGA, which is the best brand in my experience. No issues at all. I ripped it apart and watercooled it. I did a video on it a while back []-)
Backer 4280 here from Australia. Have not received my headset yet. I'm a sim racer, my sole use for VR so hoping for a better experience than my current Rift. It's been a long road but hopefully worth it in the end. I switched to the 5k+ after backing the 8k
NIce. On The question of competitive play (from a comp Pavlov player's POV) the FOV will be a huge advantage to Players with it, as it will allow a reposition with less head moment to check surroundings and being able to view 2 choke points (say from just forward of Goose on dust 2) makes it legitimately useful in the context of competitive play.
I own both the 5K+ and the 8K ... and I too have a low IPD. The problem you describe with setting the IPD to the lowest setting and hurting the top of your nose is actually common. In the Pimax forum when I read about this issue, I generally welcome that person to the "Pimax Low IPD pinch club". I received my first Pimax back in December and had some time to work on this pinching problem. To date, my best solution has been is to replace the Pimax face cushion with the Samsung Odyssey + face cushion from VRcover. That cushion is much larger and pushes the HMD a little further away from the face and it's more comfortable as well. The second step is to use foam tape seal and place it around the nose area of the HMD. It slightly angles the HMD a little higher which then decreases the side distortions immensely.
Yeah but that is not the default FOV. They made the normal FOV the default and called it NORMAL for a reason. It sacrifices i would say a sliver of 1/4th inch but it is still huge compared to other headsets. I would go so far to say had they not allowed people to opt in for Large FOV and called Normal large and small normal no one would have complained.
I have zero intention of dropping that much on the Pimax 5k or 8k. That said, I'm very very happy that they delivered on their promises, even if behind schedule. IMO a win for one VR company is a win for all of them, and the ability for people to try out a Pimax, maybe as a demo, could be a much better sell for VR than trying out the first generation headsets. The fact that they've managed to deliver a headset this far ahead of the competition also means that in the future, when prices drop and new models release, they could be serious contenders with Oculus and HTC.
Did they finally add manual config to the Pimax software? I had a 4k pimax and it was always off center by like 5-10 degrees. Not enough but noticeable so you have to keep your head tilted to one side for the image to be straight.
I am not 200% jealous Mike! Honest. And as I wear glasses in RL my FOV at the sides is always blurry, so do you think this distortion at the edges would still be an issue for people with glasses?
I wear glasses and the distortion was an issue for me initially. I got used to it pretty quick, just as many others have. Really didn't take long for me to stop noticing it. The FOV and clarity increase over the original Vive more than justify the upgrade IMO.
@@ANJIN79SAMMA Is this how they now ship ? with two foam pads. I wear glasses and there seems to be mixed reviews around, some saying its fine with glasses and others saying it's not. I pre-ordered in January with shipping date of 21-02-2019 so not long now hopefully.
@@csl110 Ok, so you can build up a tolerance for it, what about your glasses? Do they touch the lenses? My old Rift got scuff marks on the lenses after a year playing with my glasses on. With my New Rift I now have the inserts.

Waiting for my 5K Plus. Will arrive sometime between February 27 an March 5th. I tried the headset at my friends house, very impressive. We are both simracers, and the great FOV will really help during races, because its easier to keep control over the left and right side of the car. I did notice the blurring on the edges, hopefully it will be fixed.
Oh man when I got my Vive in 2016, it took me like 7 hours to set it up correctly. Ends up being it’s so finicky that you have to set it up a certain way or else it won’t work and you’ll have to restart your computer and unplug and plug in again. I have to turn on the base stations, plug in all the cords except for the power cord to the link box and computer. Then I open Steam VR, and then plug in the power. If I do anything out of order, it won’t work haha. I am perfectly happy with my Vive for now :) I can’t wait to see how VR evolves over the next years!!
wow that is low. My IPD is exactly 60 which is the lowest Pimax goes and then to make the image clear I had to change the face cushion and add a little foam tape. I'm not certain it your IPD would work on Pimax. In any case, if you owned the Pimax... you would CERTAINLY have to make some physical adjustments to it.
I own an Oculus Rift. I run it on a 9th Gen i7 8 core processor with an RTX 2080ti OC GPU...It runs perfectly fine with no issues whatsoever...I am going to wait for the next major upgraded, mainstream, proven tech, and affordable VR system to come out before I buy. I know it is coming, and I am willing to wait.
Hi, I've been a silent fan for some time and want to say, your content and effort to produce it is of a standard above others. Thank you. I was looking at the 5K plus as an upgrade from the VIVE I've used since launch because I hope to have my Feel Three delivered some time in July/August. I think maybe I, make do and mend, until maybe 2020 (typing that seems futuristic.. but it's next year...) because the Pimax, IMO, is innovative and appears to be the elitist and early adopters choice but my hope is. It will make O&HTC step up their game. The future is bright the future is VR+ ;)
I got my pre-order last week. Concur with everything you’ve said. I also have comfort issues due to my narrow IPD. I’ve picked up a Vive DAS and VR covers to try. I’m hoping it makes it much better. As a flight sim enthusiast I really like the increased FOV but hate having to enable parallel projection to get it to work in my sims of choice. Hopefully developers will soon apply the correct openVR rotation matrix to fix this problem. The other biggest issue is undoubtedly the distortion. Hopefully further software iterations of pitool will improve this.
What’s your IPD Mike? I’m at ~59. The fact it hasn’t be highlighted more makes me wonder if it’s less of an issue for people with more typical IPD. I think the distortion profile may need to be modified for those with narrower ipd. I also feel the distortion seems worse on the right eye which may be eye dominance related?! I have read the greater the distance from your eyes to the lenses the greater your required IPD value so a thicker pad may help.
@@VirtualRealityOasis You see distortion in the normal (aka default setting)? The large FOV distortion was described so perfectly by Sebastian and Martin that I tried it once. Yup there it is then went to normal and it was gone yet only seemed to 1/4th of an inch smaller. Still huge game changer of FOV.
I am about to order a 5k + station & controllers... I have 2x RTX 2080 TI NVlinked together. Will the 32gb ram help any? Have you tested on Elite? Since I DO wear glasses and have to is there any suggestions to make or is there a clip-in prescription for this item?
I have a 1080 and 32gb of ram. Elite Dangerous runs great so you will be just fine. They have thicker foam padding coming out which will make more space as the lens will touch the glasses. If you are nearsighted as I am you don't need glasses. They will be offering prescription lens adapters (it was a stretch goal for backers) but who knows how long that will take them.
I just got my XR OLED and it’s amazinggggg! The FOV is amazing! A million times better than OCULUS products, about which the CV1 suddenly died and I’ve received almost zero support. To add, the Pimax HMD is so easy to set up - literally took me 15 minutes with zero bugs!! Need a strong GPU with a pc with more horse power to run things smoothly tho...
Hi I know this is really old video but am interested in buying a 5k plus of someone off eBay as a used one is quite cheap now but am wondering if the visuals in the headset have improved now given that the pimax pie tool software has been improved and they’ve introduced Brainwarp to help with this distortion and reprojection for Lower spec pcs ? Do you know if this has improved things ? I was hoping to use a i5 4th gen and gtx 1070ti in full fov mode ? Cheers 🥂
I wouldn't recommend getting them. The Kickstarter backers haven't even gotten theirs yet (told January, now it's May) and their communication stinks. Which makes one wonder why there is now an Indegogo campaign. Opinion is leaning towards vaporware.
@@ParanormalNewsToday Sorry, but that's nonsense. They started the Indigogo beacause the kickstarter compaign ended and they had a flood of people still wanting to pledge/order. They've made huge improvements to the shoes in the last few months so saying it's vaporware is just ridiculous. Plus the reviews on them are very positive.
Can the headset launch games and function correctly without hand controllers? On amazon, they sell the headset w/o accessories, and I mostly plan on playing seated-sims (like DCS, with HOTAS).
If you only use the Pimax to play flight simulator, do you really need a very high end video card? There isn't much action going on in some flight sims that are not shooting games, so would a GTX 690 be good enough for FSX OR P3D? Thanks
Definitely not. two 4k displays trying to keep above 60 is going to be difficult for any computer. 4GB of Vram won't go very far at that resolution and you'll probably wish you had spend the money on a new video card.
Don King I wasn't saying I did not intend to upgrade my video card. I was just wondering whether that was necessary if it's only used in flight simulation where the graphics are relatively mostly static. Thanks
@@HeliSimDriver understood. I'm just saying that a video card upgrade is going to be necessary. A 980 or newer equivalent should be pretty affordable and work comfortably enough.
thanks for the helpful review. I awaiting my preordered P5K+ and I am wondering whether to wait for the Pimax controllers and lighthouses ($300) or just buy the Vive ones. I do flight simming primarily and I don't have any use for controllers as I use a flight yoke, but the lighthouses are a must for tracking. Also, if I go with the Vive lighthouses, would I need both or just one would do since I am stationary the whole time?
I have just got my CV1 Oculus Rift and the Pimax seems amazing for a more detailed experience for enthusiasts. My rift didnt come with the touch controllers as it was a second hand bargain buy from eBay but I also got a bargain on the Touch controllers making the whole Oculus rift set up half the price of a brand new one. I have been happily using my Rift as a scene viewer with Steam VR workshop and using the included Xbox One Controller and I cant wait to dive deep into playing Minecraft VR with the Rift and testing other games like Skyrim VR when my other sensor with the touch controllers arrive.
@@wiiasd3682 your right. It's just so hard. I only recently tried vr. I've known about it for years and seen videos and such but nothing does it justice except trying it for self. It was literally life changing
But the real question is... does all these VR games support this wider field of view? I might be mistaken but I'm think things like 21:9 ultrawide monitor, which not all games support. So would you have black bars on your peripheral vision in some of these games? Or is this problem just irrelevant in VR?
The information is there so the games support it. The only thing I have seen that was weird is in Creed. The black part with white letters screen that pops up to say location before each fight and at the gym gets cut off on the side and we see the stadium. Its like they said yeah stretch that black out 120 degrees. That's enough. No one will see that's it's just an overlay.
Hello sir. Thanks for the info! 👍🏼 I’m waiting for mine to arrive. Do want to ask ask you if the pimax head strap is really that bad? And, those pieces you have printed are the in store to buy somewhere? And if so, what are the called and where can you order them? Or, can i buy them from you?? 😎 Would be nice 😉 Thanks in advance! The Netherlands ✌🏼
Get the vive digital audio strap and you can get the 3D printed adapter down by Tyriel Woods channel. I did the velcro thing MRTV showed. Not sure if you want to wait on the official Pimax DAS.
I backed this thing around the same time as you by the sounds of it, mine arrive a couple of days ago and I've had nothing but problems getting it working to an acceptable standard. It's okay now, but I was wondering, does your pimax have loads of twinkling red green and blue pixels visible on the display, especially when looking at darker areas? I'm wondering if my panels are faulty.
Mike - You might not see this, but you should definitely do a review of the Samsung HMD Odyssey +. As someone who was a newcomer to VR, I bought it because it was cheap, and love it. I’d be curious to see how it compares to you past experiences and show a lower end market than the Rift S. It also has the only screen door effect diffuser on the market
I’ve never heard of the pimax. I was only aware of 3 vr headsets. owning psvr and the rift, the only thing I wished that both sets had was to be able to see things from the corner of your eyes. It kinda feels like looking through a large scope, but than I hear that their is a set that has a wider view? I’m interested.
Pimax is normal default FOV is amazing and a huge upgrade. Even on my 1080. The black levels are similar to PSVR and not as good as Vive but you won't notice in most games.
Vr is great I have both the oculus rift and rift s but the only complaint I have is the resolution and I want to get something like this because when I play onward I can’t even see someone in the next building or if they are peaking out of the window or something
@@VirtualRealityOasis After a weekend of testing, I agree 100% with your assessment. Did the Deluxe Audio Strap and VRCover mods right away, as it was too uncomfortable for me due to the nose pressure due to having a narrow IPD. What I did notice, though, is that the distortion, and some of the other issues can be somewhat minimized with trying different options in Pitool. For example, My experience when using Brainwarp was much worse than it was with the option turned off, and just working on the best combination of game settings and supersampling to get the framerate up to 90Hz. I also found the screens to be much better than expected. Black levels don't really seem much worse than the Rift, which has always been worse in that respect than the Vive. This is definitely enthusiast-level tech, though, as the amount of fiddling with settings required has been much more than I've ever needed to do with the Rift or Vive. Here's hoping that the Pitool will eventually get to the same level as the competition, and the issues will go away.
Nice video, thanks for sharing. I’m a FlightSim guy and looking forward to your HP Reverb G2 review. Hopefully you’ll get one to review before the rest of us mortals.
I’m really thinking about buying one of these. 90HZ is all I need. Just for 90HZ is a 1660 GTX ok? Mine is rated for 144HZ. Also what kind of controls can I use on them? Can I use my Oculus Quest or Oculus Quest 2 control? And I read somewhere you can use oculus website and use there library to play games from it. Is that true?
Just got it off Ebay open box (practically new) for $400. Haven't tried it yet but I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a different cover? I don't see a VR cover for Pimax on VR cover's website...
I just got mine today, and the distortion where it feels like a larger FOV is being compressed to the actual FOV, so there is an obvious distortion effect regardless what viewing setting you choose. I feel like the distortion shouldn't be too hard to fix, but we'll see...
will I be able to enjoy this with 2080 (not ti)? I use VR a lot and the FOV sounds amazing but I'm slightly afraid of the associated hassle that comes with the set and that my 2080 won't be enough for let's say, senua
Ordered a Pimax 5K about three weeks ago and my primary use is with DCS and it is also a graphic intense Air Combat Simulator but what I do like when it is enabled in the future is their claim to bring Foveated rendering as a mod to the pimax headset therefore taking the load off the GPU is what is needed The thing about having a next gen headset in procession before graphics cards can catch up is ok for me. I hope Pimax can be a mod type headset as they seem to claim. Back in the early 90's these headsets would cost 10's of thousands of dollars with about 256 colors total display rendering so for $699 for the headset only, it's a bargain with a wide FOV and High Res. " CHECK SIX"
The black level is noticable as a muddy gray in some dark caves of Skyrim but not a problem for me in Elite Dangerous or Beat Saber because of the contrasting bright parts.
I'm pretty glad I went for a rift instead of the pimax. When I first learnt of the pimax I was extatic, but thinking about it logically makes me realise it might not be a good idea to get due to the challenges of computer hardware not able to keep up with the demands of VR. Still, 200 degree view sounds amazing, I hope the big companies follow suit!
Turns out 1080 workers fine. I promise. There are posters are here that say the 1070 works fine. With brainwarp I did notice I could get a graphics bump, supersampling to 1.5 snd run it at 72hz and holy hell it looks and plays amazing. But unless you own a vive or have deep pockets to buy one and the 5k+ then sell the vive headset it might be better to stick with 110 degree of vision... just do no try wider FOV. I can't go back.
thanks for review! im gonna wait but did you said you use rift as main device...do you prefer over rift pro? i was thinking of upgrading or best to wait?
So it have essentialy the same resolution and SDE at the centre of the screen as WMR headsets or Vive Pro, minus parts of the screen, that used for wider FOW.
Not really... the only WMR headset that is comparable would be the Odyssey+ ... but unlike the Odyssey+, the Pimax doesn't have the distant blur the OD+ has.
@@tomohm4237 Why not, they both have lcd displays with low SDE and have same vertical resolution. Also SDE on OG odyssey is worse than on other lcd based WMR headsets
@@iscander_s You think the OG odyssey had worse SDE than say the OG Levono, HP, etc??? Really? I own a couple WMR hmd's and I've tried all the WMR accept the ASUS model... I certainly don't agree with that.
@@tomohm4237 I won't gonna argue with you, I had only Lenovo and Vive, thus my opinion is based on comparison images I've seen on the internet (too bad there's not that much of direct comparison shots between them), and the fact that because of the technology behind OLED panels, they compared with LCD screen with same resolution would have less amount of subpixels and have wider gaps between them.

Amazing and pretty much the best headset out there, but just very expensive
Mike.....as usual this was a no BS review! A 1080ti as entry level for this headset sounds about right to me and we all appreciate your honesty, integrity and hard work. Keep it up man!
Cheers John! Thanks for the comment mate. Much appreciated []-)
@@AetherProwl but if the resolution is far greater you don't need supersampling as much. It shouldn't use any more, if not even less computing power
@@VirtualRealityOasis Out of curiousity, if you chose to play games at much lower resolutions and graphics settings on the Pimax 8K, wouldn't the higher field of view and lower SDE still make it a technical upgrade to the Oculus?

Tbh these head sets just aren't worth it yet with current tech
VR is one of the most interesting yet the slowest pacing tech leaping forward to consumers >_
Because there is NO tech to run it, not the way we want. Not now, not for many years.
@@rasta77-x7o Our current tech seems more than capable of running VR.
@@BananaDynastyX Not the way we want i said.
Massive FOV, Much higher Resolution.
I own 3 VR headsets and the best hardware around, the barely run with their crappy FOV and res today.
I really hope that the foveated rendering tech will help make it easier on your computer like many have mentioned so often before.

VIBE PRO is not blurry, it has been fixed.
You forgot the custom audio strap.
Going off what MRTV has been hyping for the past 3' months - it's good to see a proper, straight to the point review. Thanks for this!
@@photocrafting6068 my big apologies. I meant MRTV not SWEViver.
As someone who has tried all headsets and Pimax at every iteration and all the existing competitors (sorry StarVR and Xtal are not viable competitors) I can say the 5k+ is the best existing headset in my experience.
Cons:
Need Vive Lighthouses and controllers
Vive controllers in general
Not lower IPD than 60
Black levels in dark areas of games (not contrast high games like Beat Saber and Elite Dangerous)
Buggy in Steam on occasion that requires full computer restart.
Headstrap.
Cord should be 5ft longer
To close to lens.
PROS:
Runs 99% of VR games on 1080 and even 1070 especially with brainwarp (72fps and 60ishfps run smooth and for me and (my severe motion sickness) no perceivable difference to 90fps... Sorry Linus
Huge game changer FOV of 150 degrees in normal.
TBD:
Knuckle like controllers
Wireless option
Deluxe headstrap
Motion leap hand tracking (works great when tried and glad they support it but will developers support it?)
Build quality. I haven't had a problem and dropped it twice. No cord issue or dead pixels. Plastic and everything seems fine to me.
The final conclusion:
First Gen 2 headset (5k+ not 8k... just didn't enjoy the pixel arrangement)
If Vive owner easy upgrade choice.

Amen brother !
So it's a headset with no sensors or controllers? You have to buy those from other places?
Its a good start for pimax. Whatever brings forward our virtual reality future!

Glad to see the VR market is stepping into the direction of high FOV. Because frankly, its essential if you want a truly immersive experience.

Interesting! Thanks for your input mate []-)
It slightly angles the HMD a little higher which then decreases the side distortions immensely.
love the subtle edit at 8:00 to demonstrate the blur issue
Yeah but that is not the default FOV. They made the normal FOV the default and called it NORMAL for a reason. It sacrifices i would say a sliver of 1/4th inch but it is still huge compared to other headsets. I would go so far to say had they not allowed people to opt in for Large FOV and called Normal large and small normal no one would have complained.
Great video as always mike

Always enjoy your fair & honest reviews Mike
I have zero intention of dropping that much on the Pimax 5k or 8k. That said, I'm very very happy that they delivered on their promises, even if behind schedule. IMO a win for one VR company is a win for all of them, and the ability for people to try out a Pimax, maybe as a demo, could be a much better sell for VR than trying out the first generation headsets. The fact that they've managed to deliver a headset this far ahead of the competition also means that in the future, when prices drop and new models release, they could be serious contenders with Oculus and HTC.
Literally a toaster you strap on your face, if my family saw me wearing this, I’d never hear the end of it, love the channel btw
Pimax will supply you ( for free) thicker foam padding so glasses should not be an issue.
@@AutomanUK1 Afraid not the goodies like pads will come later, best hop over to the forums they have plenty of suggestions, also you may vary with glasses mine are ok as they are small and some foam on the bridge helps a lot.A lens frame is in the works that might be your best option getting mine as a backer you may have to get them from the store though.
Just leave the default FOV and no distortion. Don't know why that was not mentioned.
Mike, thank you for a great video. I cant find the correct (Thick Perforated Pleather Pad) at VR Cover. do you have a part # you can share?
As usual liked the vid before it starts :D and I was waiting for that review....let's see.
I also have a very small IPD (57ish). Was the Pimax able to get the lenses close enough to provide you a clear image?
wow that is low.
It seems the distortion was really down played in other reviews. I feel like it’s a big problem for me []-/
What’s your IPD Mike?
How much better is this resolution compared to current headsets or a 4k monitor? Is this clear enough for programming in virtual desktop?
No. It's not
What is your IPD value? Mines also low at 65mm (lowest setting on oculus rift), and I’m really on the fence about this headset.
It goes down to 60 ipd
I just got my XR OLED and it’s amazinggggg! The FOV is amazing! A million times better than OCULUS products, about which the CV1 suddenly died and I’ve received almost zero support. To add, the Pimax HMD is so easy to set up - literally took me 15 minutes with zero bugs!! Need a strong GPU with a pc with more horse power to run things smoothly tho...
Nice vid!
Hi
I know this is really old video but am interested in buying a 5k plus of someone off eBay as a used one is quite cheap now but am wondering if the visuals in the headset have improved now given that the pimax pie tool software has been improved and they’ve introduced Brainwarp to help with this distortion and reprojection for Lower spec pcs ? @@VirtualRealityOasis yeah im planning on playing all those but what about pavlov
Plus the reviews on them are very positive.
anything coming from kickstarter, especially with hardware is bullshit.
Can the headset launch games and function correctly without hand controllers? On amazon, they sell the headset w/o accessories, and I mostly plan on playing seated-sims (like DCS, with HOTAS).
The pimax 5k looks like a toaster from the future that dyes your toast or crumpets blue
A 980 or newer equivalent should be pretty affordable and work comfortably enough.
so now you have it will you use it every chance you get or just special occasions
Since they don't make 3D TV's anymore, think getting a Pimax 5K would work for a virtual theater?
Unfortunately big problem with extreme FOV vr headsets is that the resolution in the important part of the screen straight ahead is still too low.
just seperate your eyes
@@gam3rmom3nt3 We dont need 270 degree fov.. we need 90-100 degrees with good resolution
This is definitely the best headset for sim racing
Love your no bullshit review.
thanks for the helpful review.
What be do you recommend for starters
I am wondering if I should save up for this or wait two months for Steam VR...any recommendations?
There r so many headsets coming out in 2019, u should hold on.
@@wiiasd3682 your right. It's just so hard. I only recently tried vr. I've known about it for years and seen videos and such but nothing does it justice except trying it for self. It was literally life changing
@@GreatGreenGoo I agree. VR is absolutely the future. Can't wait to see those new headsets and games
I have one, it blows the oculus out of the water at least if you like sim racing, flight or space titles like Elite Dangerous - not even close.
It’s so ugly and expensive however.
you are comparing a 400 dollar product to a 1,000 dollar product. ofcourse its going to be better.
Kevin Prima Its probably the wider FOV, although im sure the resolution makes it look better too
@@rorschach5510 It's $594 now actually, at least on Aliexpress.
I would reseat the cable that plugs in the headset. It may not look like it, but it is removable and the cables of had a lot of problems.
@@jeffstevenson Definitely sounds like a cable issue. Others have had his problem.
Thanks will give it a go
you made this video 2 days after my birthday
Can you recommend a VR headset to mainly watch movies , immerse theatre experience
It will be cheaper to just buy a projector if all you really want to do is watch movies :P
@@suicidalbanananana can you tell me the one , I used to watch 1080p only
Vr is great I have both the oculus rift and rift s but the only complaint I have is the resolution and I want to get something like this because when I play onward I can’t even see someone in the next building or if they are peaking out of the window or something
Which vr cover pad did you order exactly mate?
Got my Pimax 5k+ today. I was an early pre-order, not a kickstarter backer.
Wow that was fast []-)
@@VirtualRealityOasis You know what else is fast? How long it actually worked before it died. About four hours, to be exact.
Nice video, thanks for sharing. I’m a FlightSim guy and looking forward to your HP Reverb G2 review. Hopefully you’ll get one to review before the rest of us mortals.
also, you didn't comment on the black levels - big reason why I don't want to go from an OLED screen (Rift) to any of these LCD varieties..
Do these Pimax Headsets come with built-in Speakers? (something like Oculus Go)
I just got mine today, and the distortion where it feels like a larger FOV is being compressed to the actual FOV, so there is an obvious distortion effect regardless what viewing setting you choose.
Do index controllers work?
Thanks forr the honest opinion. Are the black levels that much of a difference than the vive or rift?
The black level is noticable as a muddy gray in some dark caves of Skyrim but not a problem for me in Elite Dangerous or Beat Saber because of the contrasting bright parts.
Allways amazes me how huge this thing is. All necks matter lol.
Great Review. Won't be an early bird on this one
Just subscribed. Thank you for your amazing content.
A combination of the pimax and the quest will be the future.
Thank you for posting the attachment adapter files :D You rock!
Valve index ftw !!!!
thanks for review! im gonna wait but did you said you use rift as main device...do you prefer over rift pro? i was thinking of upgrading or best to wait?
Hi mike i have the gtx 1650 ventus xs 4g oc and i wanna buy the rift s but i dont know i this is gonna work with my gpu thanks
The LCD screen has three subpixels on each pixel, and OLED has approx. 2.5 subpixels on each pixel, because of the usage of Pentile technology.
