18/10/23 - Update! Today I was finally able to test and record the Quest 3 mic quality. Quite frankly it sucks, even worse than Quest 2. If you want to hear a comparison, I've shared a clip on my Twitter and Facebook page. I'm so sorry I couldn't test this sooner, as I mentioned in this video, I've had audio driver issues using link since the headset arrived.

Off topic but is Virtual desktop still a side quest thing or does the actual app work again? Sucks about the mic tho. That makes it a harder upgrade decision for social gamers.☹️

    Hi Mike,
Just as a warning: the Quest 3 controllers also have an IR tracking light at the bottom of the handle. When you use your Quest 2 grip covers, you are completely covering up this tracking LED.
You can probably mod the grip covers by drilling holes in them. Keeping this IR light unobstructed will no doubt improve your tracking a lot!

I specifically am getting the quest 3 for the mr possibilities. As a sculptor I'm curious to see how I can use this to enhance sculpting. I'm imagining having a virtual object that I can sculpt in real life, as a 3d sjablone, as it were.
And besides that, I travel a lot and spend too much time in hotel rooms. So watching movies on big screen, having a virtual door that opens up to a beach....lovely!
That said; I wonder if there will be a possibility to 3d record a room. That way I could be anywhere and go back in my living room when I'm homesick.

MR will allow me to easily pet my dog, grab a sip of water, check a text on my phone and such, all without being taken out of "the flow" by having to remove the headset. It should also help alleviate that feeling that someone is quietly sneaking up on me while "blindfolded" in VR.

11:15 The Quest 3 has a battery is roughly 3.6 amp hours. Assuming ~5 volt batteries we get 18 watt-hours.
From 18 watt hours we get ~ 9 watts of average power draw assuming a 2 hour playtime.
But here's the problem - A USB 3.x port can only provide around 5 watts of power, and the max a normal USB C can provide is 15 watts (but often motherboards don't support this full amount).
If you're stuck on a USB 3.x port, you'll only get like 3.5 hours of playtime even with your headset plugged in if my napkin maths are somewhat accurate.

    • @JustThomas1
      @JustThomas1 ปีที่แล้ว

I guess decoding the stream is still quite tasking, Native DisplayPort over USB-C would be a much better solution for PCVR. Hopefully @VirtualRealityOasis will test battery drain and confirm.

Great review, thanks. Just a little update about the Zenni prescription lenses - the stated price is £50 but when processing the order you pay just under £75 as tax isn't included (unusual for UK) also you have to pay for express delivery (£12) even though I pre-ordered them and had to wait 2 weeks for delivery. However, I'm glad you found them a good accessory.

That's about where I am. I used my Quest 1 for the first time in a while recently and it was much laggier than I ever remembered it. I guess games getting updates for the graphics & processing the Quest 2 could support have killed the framerates on Quest 1. A lot of people brush over the original strap but completely fail to understand its purpose, the strap works as a basic use strap for kids, but it's also an extremely comfortable strap when laying down, this is entirely impossible to find on any other headset. The fact it can also be replaced is also why they can go for this elastic design in the first place. I'm just a little over people hating on something they don't understand nor have any experience with. Laying down in VR is probably used more than you think, I have over 15K hours in VRChat, kind of emphasizing the point. I know a lot of people like the idea of using their PC while laying down too, as well as watching movies, all of this can be done with the quest strap that no other headset can get even close too.

    Thanks for the honest review.
It is hard to think who this is meant for other than mainstream VR users with an extra bit of cash or who are clueless about the competition. It is by no means directed towards hardcore VR enthusiasts (including Simmers). It is also not a next-gen VR.
    *Hardcore/NextGen* - > Think:
    - Foveated Rendering *(Fail)*
    - Resolution of >= 2560x2560 per eye *(Fail)*
    - MicroOLED/QLED/MicroLCD/MiniLED. *(Fail)*
    - Valve Ecosystem tracking *(Fail)*
    - Pancake/Aspheric lenses *(Fail)*
i.e. Next Gen VR -> Pimax *Crystal*, Varjo *Aero*, Somnium Space *V1* & Big Screen *Beyond* (the latter still lacks fov/rendering)
So other than the Pancake lenses and slightly shy higher resolution (still less than the HP Reverb G2), this is so first-gen VR with a next-gen sample.
Lastly, I would not call this as *New VR Standard* as it is far from that. The Beyond probably you could say that but not this.

You would think the cable does not matter but the smart chip they use in charger style link cables regulate only the power hat a quest 2 needs to stay at or over 75% while gaming. I have tried different ways like air linked to pc while same cord was plugged in and same thing . That LED is being completely blocked with your current setup (if it hasn't been changed since).

Mine is out for delivery, but now there is also a waiting game. I bought the official case and elite strap with battery but eventually there will be much cheaper as well as much better option for both of these. But I'll have to be eyeing the VRcover offerings in the coming months.

Mixed reality: We threw out boardgames as we got more computers and games with that.... now boardgames are back, in 3D like never before and called mixed reality ;) ... back then we played boardgames with the family and friends, irl not in vl, so that's new XD
Thanks for a great review, Mike, much appreciated!

10:00 Something you don't take into consideration is the lack of hair on your head. I bought that head strap on your recommendation for my Quest 2, but due to my hair (which is rather soft after shampoo/conditioner), the fake leather material cannot grip well and it slides up constantly. I had to take it off and never use it again. I imagine being bald helps it grip much better and therefore you may have a better experience using it. Or perhaps if someone has more coarse or textured hair? Or maybe its simply a head shape issue? I am not sure.

There is an small extra tracker in the bottom of the controller to combat occlusion when you face the controller centered for possible occlusion worries since the rings were taken off. Not a lot of people know this and I thought more people should know so there's less worry about certain angles away from the 6DoF tracking via the 4 cameras.

I'm having a great time with the Quest 3. I am disappointed in the battery life. I'm only getting 1 hr and 30min of play time. I ordered the Elite strap with battery. I hope that helps.

I don’t know if you will see this comment but, should I buy this as a first vr headset? If not which one should I get. Budget is not an issue

9:28 apparently if you just weigh the quest 2 vs the quest 3 without the facial interface the quest 3 is lighter.
Apparently they have a more robust facial interface this time round I guess, and since that is literally on your face its center of gravity is of course closer to the center.

    So…. I have a meta quest 2
    And a PS5
I’m new to VR and love it.
Should I buy the quest 3 or psvr2?
I care most about processing and fidelity. The higher the image quality the better.

8:12 I had this issue with my quest 2. You need to go into your sound settings and enable the oculus mic. I dont know why.

My Quest3 Pre-Order arrived today, I bought it specifically for Golf+ as I play it on the Q2.. I'm going to keep it boxed up until I see how much better the game looks and runs, though.
