runninggames771 Like any job, there are plenty of frustrating things you have to put up with, but while you do have to produce video, I wouldn't necessarily call that boring, and I would happily take his job at any time.
The term 4k itself is misleading. If they continued the same naming conventions as previous resolutions, it would be called 2160p. It's kinda infuriating.
Yeah 4K is actually over 8 million pixels, closer to 9m, so it's annoying they use it to mean Horizontal resolution, which I can see why they call it "8k" disregarding the vertical. But it's a very stupid naming scheme. 2K, or 1440p, shouldve been 4k and 4k shouldve been 8k. But marketing. HD is not even the right standard at 3840, 4K is by definition 4096.

FINALLY. I've been seeing this 8K VR Headset going around on youtube for a while and no one actually has pointed out that 2 4k screens don't make an 8k screen. Thank you Linus
I agree, several reviewers including 'Tested' have failed to call it out, however Facepalm from Grid VR has pointed it out as early as Sept 15th here: th-cam.com/video/S30YRo-UJVs/w-d-xo.html
Nothing to do with amount of screens used since you can use multiple panels aligned seamlessly for display creation. The reason why its not 8K is because its resolution is 7680×2160 instead of being 7680×4320
Thank you captain obvious, don't know what I would do without you. Read the comment again it says " 2 4K screens " when dealing with 4K screens you need at least 4 screens to achieve 8K. That's what i meant
I can't wait until Oculus or HTC come out with their 2nd gen headsets. I think this will pressure them into working on them sooner, rather than sitting on the current gen for awhile. I think wide fov and higher resolution will be widely available from one or both before 2020.
Fair enough, interesting development over at Pimax forums, they made a suggestion if you wanted pads on the controllers or sticks, now it seems you can chose either option if you ordered the controllers. Pimax are going all out with the community it's like the Star Citizen of VR :)
To be fair, because they sent it to him to review, I'm pretty sure he's bound to call it by what they call it. Even though he said the name was questionable and misleading.
KuraIthys Yes, it does. The indicated cortex memory index will adjust the power settings for the LEDs, also thus improving the power output of the MssD pins.
It needs a dope name cause I think it looks pretty cool...better than the other competitors even... Pimax sounds like some bullshit... but pimax HAMMERHEAD! sounds dope af

Gabriel Divine 1080p (typical HD) is 4x worse than 4K, 8K is 4x better than 4K and what Linus was saying is that 2x 4K is misleading because it’s not true 8K, do the seller was correct.

Well, as flight sim guy (DCS, etc... ) this thing is huge in flight sim community with steam compatibility as with current gen VR you couldn't differentiate cockpit instruments or if that dot in distance is a tree or a tank :D, so I do not care about room scale, justgive me pixels and FOV and I am in! Actually own much older PIMAX 4k and it is better for me than Vive/Rift (owned Vive until returned and had experienced Rift at friend's house).
Yep, sim racer and IL-2 and ED player here. We want resolution badly. We're willing to pay whatever it costs. I'm looking more at the Samsung Odyssey right now.
I think this is what a ton of channels miss out, they play these crappy roomscale games that can run off a cell phone. This headset should be great for cockpit VR.
Yeah. Flight gamer here. I'm building a small simulator and I REALLY want VR for looking around the cockpit, but I cant justify it until we get some goddamn pixel density. Will work for image clarity.
Rep is not there. He tries his best when sponsors provide their equipment via overseas. Why risk Linus critiquing the sponsored products? It's free publicity, especially for early prototypes.
I've been using a pimax 2k for a long time now, since shortly after they came out - and it's preferred for some games by far. For example Elite Dangerous, the difference in pixel density makes text readable and the game look so, so much better - it's virtually unplayable on my vive. It didn't support motion controls at the start, so I use a vive for games like superhot or others that require motion controls still, but the Pimax has been great for ED and I did deal with their customer support once, to which I mailed them the device and they mailed me back a new one right away - pretty awesome imo. I'm looking forward to their 8K release, but I'll probably buy the 5k model - glad they've pushed up the release date to nail down the few remaining bugs.
Ok so for the people who do not understand. It has two 4K screens wich gives you a combined resolution of 8K. It renders 1440 PER screen which gives you a combined resolution of approx. 4K. So the 2 screens combined render at 4K upscaled to 8K. They sell true 8K headsets but almost noone would be able to run it without 2x 1080TI's. It's upscaled to 8K to so you have almost no screendoor effect! And with the added eye tracking, that's now freely added in the KS, it will hopefully be possible to do foveated rendering in the future.
Delta Novum No, 8K would be 4 (2^2, because 8/4 = 2 and it's in 2 dimensions) times a 4K screen. This would more accurately be called 2160p in 32:9 aspect ratio. The normal version is still upscaled from 1440p, though I don't know whether it's scaled from 16:9 or 32:9, but I sure as hell hope the latter.
I did some research and you are correct. It's very confusing with the naming conventions they use. For the people who want to know the difference in pixels. 8K= around 33M pixel, 4K= around 8,3M pixels. The Pimax 8k Renders around 7,4M pixels and it's output is around 16,6M pixels. So it renders at around 4K but the output is around half of that of 8K. Which to me is still very impressive.
Lol the first PC I bought was advertised at PC World as having a 7.4 GHz processor (it was a 3.2 GHz dual core) and 2 GB of RAM (it had 1 GB of DDR2 RAM)...
That reminds me of a cheapo electronics show I went to. This is back when mp3 players were all the rage. Every where you'd see them advertised as mp4, mp5, mp6, etc players. I guess they thought people would think the higher number meant it was better. Sadly, some probably did.
+Roland K wow sounds like one hell of a scam lol. "get the mp3 player for 99$, or upgrade to mp6 for only 149,99$!!" "sounds like an amazing deal! give me the mp6!!"
Well thanks to MS, you will be seeing low-end VR headsets ("MR"). Samsung, HP, Lenova, Acer, and Dell are releasing HMDs soon. www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/collections/vrandmixedrealityheadsets They have a high price point, for now, but I don't doubt once everyone sees how far inferior they are to the Rift/Vive, they will go down in price to around the $200 range.
Nobody agrees with the title, but it's been a well known marketing ploy to anyone who knows VR and has half an ounce of sense. Still very cool stuff. Yay, the fuuuuuuuuuuuuture!
Remember this is from 2017, they improved alot! I'm considering buying pimax 5k+ 8k is not possible for pc. To much demanding with the high end Gpu Considering SLI or NVLINK? it's barely working on games... And how many people are buying a high end pc that begins at minimum $1500+
lol you would need 2x 2080ti to run modern games at 90+ fps at 8k. Since it isnt real 8k, it'll probably work but ypu're looking at 2500 just for the video cards.
Managing a business, he isn't just the host even then of course it's work? He comes into work puts himself infront of millions which is mentally draining, managing tons of employees, getting sponsors, writing scripts which he still does a lot of even now, making sure all the tech is working which there is always problems to be solved and people to be called and more stuff I don't even know about, he's the fucking boss, entire livelihoods are decided by how well he does his job, he has tons of employes. It just is work. so shitty to just say this ain't work man, just put some thought into it, on this day he didn't just come in play some VR then go home.
@CNLohr: You and a few others in the Open Source area reverse engineered the HTC Vive which resulted in this: github.com/cnlohr/libsurvive Now Chinese companies are using the tech to build follow-up products. I am not saying this is bad and I am not saying this is good. Just letting you guys know, that actually TH-camrs did the hard work of reverse engineering this, not the guys from that Chinese company.
I have a Pimax 5k plus and it is great. They are now sold on Amazon and have a USA office. Can take a second look and talk about how it works comparing it to other VR headsets on the market.
The correct unit to measure the resolution of the VR headgears is PPI. Eye has a PPI of around 2200. HTC vive pro, which is the best available on the market at this moment is 615. Google is working on a 1443 one.
it seems the display is 4k but the game ouput is not since oculus doesnt support higher res. the 1440p is a forced higher res then oculus iirc. the smaller pixels will decrease the screendoor effect even though it'll be lacking in clarity compared to native 4k.
MY 4K VR PIMAX HEADSET REVIEW: I have been using this set for around 1 and a half years. I can promise you, it doesn't disappoint. Movies and seated games are amazing in it. Gyro drift was initially a problem, but new software "completely" eradicates it. It used to be a bit dim, now there are brightness increase options and it works great there too. Sound is great. Now that nearly everything is near perfect, the only two downsides; Motion blur or ghosting if you will, is still there. (not so much as to lessen immersion though) No positional tracking. BUT, Add Nolo VR and you have a perfect vr for cheap (even after Nolo price addition) with only downside of small "blur trail" NOW FOR PIMAX 8K, THAT I DON'T HAVE: I am already sure that this set is an improvement over (Pimax 4k+Nolo) so the only two downsides I can think of, 1) Blur Trail 2) Nopes, although the VR may be 4k per eye, but due to BIG field of view, pixels per inch have got to be less, so basically the picture quality will be same as Pimax 4k.
surprised not to see any comments on the fact those lighthouses are obviously rehoused HTC lighthouses, the front plastic still even has the rounded edges
I have tried fixing my phones before and only been semi-successful once. I appreciate Ifixit and their kits. $60 is a hefty amount of money for stuff that comes with most kits for free. Next gen of VR will be cool for those enthusiastic enough to get it. I doubt I will get into it.
I know this is only V.2 but this video makes me happy I didn't back the kickstarter. Too many issues still and too soon of an estimated release date to get them fixed. At worst I'll pay an extra $100 or so to buy the headset at commercial release. If it's a complete flop and they can't fix the issues than I've saved the $500-$800 to be put towards next gen VR that has everything fixed.
If you look at some youtube clips from usage at the VRdays (Sweviver for example) last week it seems all of the problems Linus adressed are fixed. I'm actually sad I couldn't fund the KS.
re text: If it has a mode that shows 1:1 pixels by using just the center of the larger resolution panel (getting rid of peripheral vision) then it will look like a nice large desktop monitor. That would be handy.
Yeah it's not 8K by any normal persons definition of the term or by any technical definition of the term - it's a total bait and switch - if I have two monitors running at 4k mirroring the same output I don't have an 8K monitor, I have two 4k monitors
I know it's prototype v2, and they'll have up to protoype v4, but it's a great proof of concept, and have compatibility with other hardware is the way to go to keep initial cost down. I'm excited to see where this goes
VR technology is still work in progress. The specs was misleading I agree, but overall it is an improvement over many others in the market and it seems we can have fun experience with it. It was not necessary to mock it so much and say things like "BS".
I have a PiMax now. It is the best headset I've ever used. Incredibly better than the VIVE pro. I can use it for hours. I would imagine they've improved it a lot since this video.
they are waiting on sourcing hardware for the true 8k part, something about the control board for non-upscale X version is not going to be ready for a few months yet. Prototyping it this way gets them feedback on the lens and tracking without having to wait for the last part.
Could argue that it helps with screen door effect. even though more pixels are just showing the same/similar color, reduces the percentage of "black line" due to having higher pixel density.
if the controllers is to lightweight doesn't it ruined the experience in some games like shooting games or sword fight games, like those game, but you dont have the experience of the weapond that you are holding because it dont have like any weight
It should have had one lens in 7K and another 1K

You will probaly need way more pwer to backthat up

@@nowonmetube yer around 2020 the PS5 comes out, also new psvr too. for what i've herd
and we want the headset to look like a cool pair of sunglasses
instead of making us look like we got the Phoenix lights UFO strapped to our head
Build a pc. Vive can run on a Nvidia 1060, but you can get a 1070 much cheaper than a year ago
I am waiting for a lot of other companies to join vr market to speed up development and to decrease the price a bit so I can keep both of my kindneys
Well thanks to MS, you will be seeing low-end VR headsets ("MR"). Samsung, HP, Lenova, Acer, and Dell are releasing HMDs soon.
www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/collections/vrandmixedrealityheadsets
They have a high price point, for now, but I don't doubt once everyone sees how far inferior they are to the Rift/Vive, they will go down in price to around the $200 range.
Nobody agrees with the title, but it's been a well known marketing ploy to anyone who knows VR and has half an ounce of sense. Still very cool stuff. Yay, the fuuuuuuuuuuuuture!
Most people agree with the title. Its the name of the item followed by bs marketing. what else do you want
I want a cookie. No nuts. Blah.
April 2020, 8kX is close to production, they realy didnt rush it and i cant wait to get one! :)
That new Genji skin looks lit af
Thanks
LTT af
Despite the issues, he still recommends sweating it out for further development on higher resolution VR.
I think that speaks volumes.
Remember this is from 2017, they improved alot!
I'm considering buying pimax 5k+
8k is not possible for pc.
To much demanding with the high end Gpu
Considering SLI or NVLINK? it's barely working on games...
And how many people are buying a high end pc that begins at minimum $1500+
lol you would need 2x 2080ti to run modern games at 90+ fps at 8k. Since it isnt real 8k, it'll probably work but ypu're looking at 2500 just for the video cards.
@@LouSaydus nah dude have you seen it struggle playing games like Minecraft in 8k so I don't think you can play on 8k

i actually bought an IFixIt pro tech tool kit because of you guys, and it really helped me building my first computer, thank you :)

Linus calls going to his huge office to play vr and tell jokes “work”
Well it is his primary source of income, and he has todo that to get views and therefore money, so it is work
Danitron I’m just saying a lot of people would kill to do that
That's why I wanna get a job there
Managing a business, he isn't just the host even then of course it's work?

Thanks for including the unwatchable space pirates gameplay 😂

The correct unit to measure the resolution of the VR headgears is PPI. Eye has a PPI of around 2200. HTC vive pro, which is the best available on the market at this moment is 615. Google is working on a 1443 one.
so, not 8k.. not even really true 4k, just upscaled 1440p.. roger
it seems the display is 4k but the game ouput is not since oculus doesnt support higher res. the 1440p is a forced higher res then oculus iirc. the smaller pixels will decrease the screendoor effect even though it'll be lacking in clarity compared to native 4k.
4+4 is 8-4 that's 4-quick maffs

MY 4K VR PIMAX HEADSET REVIEW:
I have been using this set for around 1 and a half years. I can promise you, it doesn't disappoint. Movies and seated games are amazing in it. Gyro drift was initially a problem, but new software "completely" eradicates it. It used to be a bit dim, now there are brightness increase options and it works great there too. Sound is great. Now that nearly everything is near perfect, the only two downsides;
Motion blur or ghosting if you will, is still there. (not so much as to lessen immersion though)
No positional tracking.
BUT,
Add Nolo VR and you have a perfect vr for cheap (even after Nolo price addition) with only downside of small "blur trail"
NOW FOR PIMAX 8K, THAT I DON'T HAVE:
I am already sure that this set is an improvement over (Pimax 4k+Nolo) so the only two downsides I can think of,
1) Blur Trail
2) Nopes, although the VR may be 4k per eye, but due to BIG field of view, pixels per inch have got to be less, so basically the picture quality will be same as Pimax 4k.
Linus: you need a beast to run 2:43
The pc at 5:32 wow what kind of a beast
He was saying you need an insane computer for the 8k X, which is not the one he reviewed here.
4k + 4k = 8k ? So if i have two 4k monitors i have a 8k experiance? i dont need to buy one of those new 8k monitors.. cool
Darko Hugo 2x 60hz Monitor is 120? Cool
No, you'd actually need 4k +4k+4k+4k realistically
Ali Altinel missed the joke
YES,
4k UHD + 4k UHD = Super Ultrawide 8k
That would be a 32:9 resolution of 7680×2160p
it does not work like that according to linus tech tips:th-cam.com/video/Toft6fMvByA/w-d-xo.html

surprised not to see any comments on the fact those lighthouses are obviously rehoused HTC lighthouses, the front plastic still even has the rounded edges
Can you see the rgb pixels? I can see them in the vive and oculus
im pretty sure the screendoor refers to that. so probably not
Use the Mcable with it they'll be a perfect couple.
BS MARKETING ON BOTH
5:00 Damn. I thought it was going to drop, i had like 2 mini heart attack.
I have tried fixing my phones before and only been semi-successful once. I appreciate Ifixit and their kits. $60 is a hefty amount of money for stuff that comes with most kits for free. Next gen of VR will be cool for those enthusiastic enough to get it. I doubt I will get into it.
8k in rez and price
Nope. 2x4k screens and it's $500
Joel Blackman if it's just a starter product tho they're gonna make some impressive equipment in the future

So it's not 8k but two 4K screens, and then they don't even run at 4K unless you have the X variant. That's some shady work right there
it is all clearly explained on the kickstarter and their website and on every video i've ever seen about it.
Graeme Evans that it's not really 8k? Because I went through about half the kickstarter page and they keep using the "8k resolution" as a point
Ares5933 it is 8k. The "k" resolution standard is a resolution width. And the width is that of 8k. Just not 16:9 8k.
Ares5933 also. Their campaign video. 55 seconds in, "we use a 4k display per eye"
Yeah it's not 8K by any normal persons definition of the term or by any technical definition of the term - it's a total bait and switch - if I have two monitors running at 4k mirroring the same output I don't have an 8K monitor, I have two 4k monitors

u forgot to mention the best spec, it has rgb.
VR technology is still work in progress. The specs was misleading I agree, but overall it is an improvement over many others in the market and it seems we can have fun experience with it. It was not necessary to mock it so much and say things like "BS".
The VR headset looks like it came *from Deadspace.

Looks like the Payday 2 VR headset.
What are you talking about? Payday 2 VR trailer has a Vive...........
I thought the same thing
That one is called StarVR
@EVOLICIOUS He didnt mention the trailer. He said the Payday 2 VR headset. The one in the game.
Yeah, there is literally an in-game mask thats a VR Headset.
Why did they put 4k displays in it if they can only run at 1440p?...
they are waiting on sourcing hardware for the true 8k part, something about the control board for non-upscale X version is not going to be ready for a few months yet. Prototyping it this way gets them feedback on the lens and tracking without having to wait for the last part.
rtfgujihy uyhjigtfbr why do Sony claim 4K in PS4 Pro, when it is just upscaled to 4K?
rtfgujihy uyhjigtfbr why do Sony claim 4K in PS4 Pro, when it is just upscaled to 4K?
Could argue that it helps with screen door effect. even though more pixels are just showing the same/similar color, reduces the percentage of "black line" due to having higher pixel density.
Chinese marketing at it's finest.
and then linus makes a video about a 16 monitor setup and calls it 16k..
but it was 16k...
