This series has changed my life. I started to watch it and almost turned off because I had a preconceived idea about prong and other training collars, so when it was mentioned that you use them, I became hesitant. Being desperate for help with my reactive dog, I kept watching and just two days later, I have finally had a couple of walks where I haven't almost ended up in tears of frustration. The line "When you're both looking at each other who's driving." it hit me like a tonne of bricks. The way you explained the need to be confident and hold your arm straight...such simple things but none of the trainers I've been to have mentioned that. It's all just treats, treats, treats. I made those simple changes and boom, it was like waking a different dog. I can't thank you enough!

I’ve had my rescue for a few months and was so against both prong & e collars. And just like you said there’s so many purely positive trainers. My dog got to where he wouldn’t perform a command unless I had treats, and then it became nothing unless it was high value like chicken. I ordered a herm Sprenger that’ll be here in a few days so I’m watching as much as I can. Your comment gives me hope :)

It's interesting how he immediately changes behavior when the leash goes to the owner's hand. You see Tom always correcting Henry with both the command and the use of the slip collar, but not the owner. And you can see the difference when she says "sit", the dog sits and gets up right away, and when Tom says, the dog even lays down, because maybe when Tom says it, he means it, but when the owner says it there's no punishment. This dog is too smart for his own good lol

Totally agreed with that! My dog used to be extremely reactive too but I found a trainer at where I live who goes by almost the same rules as Tom. After weeks of practice, I finally got him under my control. It was the best thing I've ever felt 🙏🏼

Thanks so much Tom. Something about "I'm on a walk and the dog is joining me" and the critique of how to walk and hold the leash here has resonated the most out of everything I have seen and read in the last months about walking a reactive dog (including on your channel!). Like this owner, I had also thought that keeping constant eye contact / engagement with my dog was paramount (something I remembered from casual obedience school with a different dog many years ago). After using your advice in this video with my dog reactive rescue GSD yesterday and this morning, I think I am actually starting to make a breakthrough!

Thank you! I have a very reactive 5 year old Pomeranian and I have been searching for this kind of info! I will also be watching a ton of your videos!

Thanks so much for this series! I have a nearly 3 year old GSD that listens to anyone but me (which is not ok because I'm the one responsible for her 99% of the time.) I thought I had tried everything. These past few videos have been such an eye opener!! I've always known that she WANTS to listen and be of service, there was just something in the way. It's totally me! Haha. You've helped me realize that I'm not confident and in control enough with her, at all. I thought I was.
So, starting today I will use your tactics and I'm sure there will be improvement. Thanks again!

This is so awesome! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, Tom. You're really making the world better for pet dogs 'cause I can't imagine what it must feel like being that little black dog: You walk through life on your own, not understanding jack about how the world in which you're forced to live works, afraid of every other dog and unsure about yourself. This is torture!
Positive training takes years with dogs like this one, waiting till they occasionally stumble into the desired behaviour so that the positive trainer can mark it with a clicker 'because the trainer him-/herself doesn't have the balls to confront their own feelings and actually correct the dog. Positive training is not about dogs, it's about PEOPLE who want the world to know how good they are and how they never hurt the dog even a little bit. All the while the dog is forced to live in misery and insecurity! UGH! This makes me so mad!!!
Thank you for making this dog's and its owner's life better so quickly, Tom. You're the best. :)

The release of stress and anxiety from the dog and owner as well as the growing confidence in both is amazingly inspiring to watch. And this is a small doggo. I own an 8 month old WHV who is already 75 lbs and yanks like no other, and he is one strong dude. Needless to say, I will be purchasing a herm sprenger immediately for my stubborn & confuzzled counterpart. The treat ordeal makes too much sense; positively reinforcing negative behavior. I get pissed just thinking this little jerk is abusing me and getting rewarded for it. His attention is on me for the treats, and then off in a split second. I’ve known/suspected this the entire time I’ve owned my dog, but kept on with the positive/treat reinforcement. Obviously like you’ve said in another video, if I could use treats to train my dude to walk better, we’d be leaps and bounds from where we are right now. It’s not like I want to use a prong on him, but am I going to suffer and deal with with the lead burns and muscle strains the rest of my life? Hail nah. We’ve made little to no progress on walks (it’s been SIX months of consistent positive training with normal lead and treats only), yet he’s extremely obedient in the household. I’ve thrown out both shoulders, always waking up with new muscle sores/pains. I initially only backed “positive training” until I watched these videos. You have inspired me you amazing man, you. I know not all agree with the prong collar and that’s totally fine, I didn’t either at first. To those I say: try walking a strong a** dog with insane hunting instincts and tell me how that positive training goes for you. I’m done with being ripped to shreds and I’m done with my dog being nothing but confused and aloof outdoors on leash (although he’s amazing off leash, always checks in and stays close). All dogs are different and exhibit different personalities and genetic traits. Some need guidance as strong as they pull. Thank you for what you do 🤗❤️

I needed this video. I am fostering a high anxiety reactive Boxer American Bulldog. I have had her 6 months and her behavior in the house and backyard has improved considerably but our walks are often a disaster with pulling and lunging at people and other animals. She is strong and has pulled me to the ground several times. My most frustrating thing is she responds so much better for the trainer. I know it is me but I don’t know what I am doing wrong. She will heel even without the leash when in the yard but the moment we step through the gate she is doing her own thing. I am always afraid that if I don’t have a good hold on her, she could injure someone.

Thank you so much for putting so much time into these videos! Question. My 5 y/o standard poodle and I just moved to a new place, and he's become SUPER clingy and so overprotective that he's barking and trying to bite any dogs anywhere near me. When my roommate took him to introduce him to the same dog without me there, he never barked or snapped at all, they just touched noses and were calm. How do you go about solving this to live with dogs in harmony? Do you have a video that already covers this?

would you do a video sharing tips on confidence as an owner? so much of the dogs behavior (mine included) has to do with the owners (cough cough me!) lack of confidence. in philly last year my dog was attacked by two wandering off leash pits and luckily we were able to get away, and after an ER vet visit she was released as relatively fine but she has fear reactivity to now, and im really stunting her healing because of my anxiety

I am from Canada so obviously it's not practical for me to seek out your advice in person but I was wondering if you might have a video on how to stop biting in a 3 and half month old puppy who becomes reactive when you try to handle him, specifically if you are trying to move him or usher him to a him kennel.... positive trainer tell me just call him and luer him with food but that seems impractical... ex the other night I ask my 8 year old son too help put the dogs in there kennel something we do multiple times a day every day and for whatever reason our puppy was determined that he was gonna stay out and when our son took put his hands on both sides of our puppy and began to physically usher our pup to his kennel gentelly not aggressively the puppy snapped at him and bit his hand... we now wont let the puppy around our boy but I am not sure what to do to resolve the issue long term... we have two other dogs and never had his issue

There are a lot of misconceptions about R+ focused training. I think Tom has some good things to say, however, in my humble opinion R+ focused training has the most backed science and evidence for happier dogs and stronger handler bonds. Sure, it takes more time and I get that people want quick fixes, but using a forced aversive runs risks of furthering fear and aggression, not to mention can create a punishment callous, and you'll need more and more as time goes on. As soon as a prong or e collar comes off after a training session a lot of dogs are right back to the unwanted behaviors, but leaving it on 24 7 is going to compound the root issue. After the 50th tug from a prong the dog will learn to hate other dogs walking by him that cause him to get choked over and over. If it's a leash pop, the trainer isn't leading the dog the leash is...and while I'm with my large GSD I want him to be focused on me and my cues not learning the leash is what teaches him what to do. I'm not going so far to say in extreme cases an aversive should never be used with diligent care, but can we stop with the us vs them R+ vs "balanced". Solid time invested R+ focused training can help the most difficult of dogs and has many times, and yes it does have corrections just not forced based.

This is really nice. Working on heel with rescue 1 yr 4 months husky/German shepherd. I've been watching alot of videos since mid July after we got her. she's reactive on leash (defensive growling reactive on walks. She's pretty quiet and I believe very attention driven. She has bite marks on both ears and fleas when we rescued her so maybe got into a fight by another dog? We don't really know what happened) but have been trying to build heel in between free (she LOVES to smell) and she doesn't look at me. I say her name for her to look at me and she doesn't always respond (on leash) so not sure if that is because she's really high smell drive and it will take a while since she comes fr high drive breeds. Working on giving her a job in some way throughout the day which is hard because that is not the norm in modern society it seems

A new study led by biologist Ana Catarina Viera de Castro of the Universidae do Porto in Portugal reveals that shouting at dogs and using punitive methods to train them does short and long term damage, while using reward based methods yields better results both for learning and emotional health.
The study recruited 42 dogs from three schools that use reward based training methods such as food, toys and play, and 50 dogs from four schools that use punitive methods such as yelling, leash jerking and physical manipulation. Each dog was recorded during the first 15 minutes of three training sessions, and saliva samples were taken to measure their stress levels. In order to establish baseline levels of cortisol concentration, three samples were taken from each dog while they were at home in a calm state, and three samples were then taken from each dog after training. The researchers also examined each dog’s behavior during training to look for stress signals, such as yawning, lip-licking and vocalizations.

    • @fredalmeida8170
      @fredalmeida8170 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This is so fucking biased.
What were the schools that used punitive methods? How do we know if they have decent trainers? What were the genetic traits of the dogs trained in the schools that used punishment? What breeds are we talking? Cortisol production can also be genetic and have nothing to do with induced stress. This study would make sense if all the dogs were genetically equal.
And this researcher never trained a dog in her life so this proves fuck all.

So called purely "positive" training is a JOKE.Its not positive when your dog has to be put to sleep because "positive" training does not serve behaviorally challenged animals who need clear corrections to show them clear boundaries which they need.
