The owners aren’t truly listening. They’re preparing their next problem statement instead. The sulking label is him humanizing his emotions on a dog. Toms patience is admirable

I found it difficult to understand what this owner really wanted from the dog. No wonder the dog got away with so much stuff. In the end, I think he finally figured it out. You really had to persevere with these owners. Good job, Tom, I think you finally got through to them!

You stating the use of tools are like us applying a seat belt, but hoping that we never need it is brilliant. The goal is to never need it, but we apply it for that one time we might need it. Thank you for your usage of scenarios to equate reasons for tools!
I appreciate the no-nonsense approach when it comes to difficult clients. It's inspiring as a fellow dog trainer. Sometimes they need to hear what they don't want to hear.
I so agree! I taught my 5 months old God, I've only had her a week, to not jump, clews oh my gosh!! By when I come in the door, to say sit, if she doesn't, shut the door, then repeat as many times as needed. So far, so good, she has not jumped on me in 4 days!!

Me too.. it’s common sense when we stop looking at dogs as babies incapable of learning. When he said the comment about the seat belt.. that should have been a lightening bolt moment for them!
The man clearly loves his dog but like many people they anthropomorphize (project) their own feelings about being corrected as a child. Firm but fair communication. When the dog sulks he is just realizing there are boundaries so you give the dog something better than getting their way. Limits then Praise
For sure. I like the what he called "sulking"....it's actually more like learned helplessness, which can be an excellent way of knowing that your correction had the desired effect. Much like when a child has that slight fear of losing their iPad or something of value if they do something naughty. It's not "sulking" in a negative way...we don't go "aweeee that's so sad...." when a child gets told off for writing with permanent marker on the walls...that's the response you want! As long as it's followed up with showing the desired behaviour instead and positive rewards than it is exactly what balanced training represents. 👌
You nailed it. The dog got it right away but the owner didn’t really like the dog obeying and being submissive. Once again, the owner is the barrier to good behavior. He needs to develop a backbone and appreciate that he really has a very good dog but mixed messages have created the bad behavior. Firm, fair and consistent structure will make a better environment for all.

For real. I saw a behaviorist on social media that would sob about a dog being corrected appropriately because it triggered her and her experience in a very abusive relationship. But is now trying to spread the message that to correct a dog after you've built a relationship is abusive especially if it's followed by praising or "reconciliation" as she put it. And by doing this yours chipping away at the relationship with the dog and yeah.....it was very frustrating to watch.
The comments section was equally crazy as well saying corrections are a thing of the past and punishment followed by praise is abuse.

Omg that owner makes me want to rip my hair out. I had to stop training dogs because I couldn't stand owners... You're doing amazing work and you're so patient. Someone needs to communicate these realities to dog owners.... Not me 😅 but I'm glad you do!

Some owners don’t even know what they actually want from their dogs. This guy doesn’t want excited jumping, but when the dog is calm and keeps his paws on the ground, he’s “mush.” And the woman who gave into his barking when he wanted his food and is like “how is he supposed to tell me he wants something?” Like…that’s up you you, ma’am. You can teach a dog how to give you signals, like say, ringing a bell to go out to potty. For food though, I think that should be a a firm “you’ll get it when I say you get it.” Your dog doesn’t get to demand things. Once I put my dog’s food down for her, but was lost in thought and totally spaced giving her the okay to eat. Five minutes later I look over and see her still just sitting there patiently watching me, food untouched. I felt bad about accidentally “making her wait” but it didn’t harm her any!

It's because people who don't know what they're doing or don't want to have the responsibility or just gave up on it and decided to let it out the car and fend for itself that's the fucking Idea most people come up with when they decided that they made a mistake when they got a dog

I myself believe in tough love if you were to tell me something that I'm doing wrong I'm not gonna get butt hurt but that doesn't count for everybody else I'm personally I'm sick of saying people who decided that they don't know what they're doing with the dog because they want to get a dog for their kid and their best fucking thing to come up with it's a fucking letter outside the car when they're out in the middle of nowhere what kind of bullshit is that

Glad it seems like the owner caught on at the end. The mother there was definitely an enabler of bad behavior too by rewarding the bad behavior. Hopefully they figure out how to be more consistent with their messaging.
I know this is going to sound mean but Ive never been so frustrated w a dog owner. Hes always jumping on people, "Down" - Tom, "look hes mush, I dont want him to be mush" - owner. How can a dog be successful when the expectation is moved constantly? Its impossible.
That’s been my biggest frustration as a trainer,,, getting people to understand that just because you correct your dog doesn’t mean you’ve broken his spirit or that he’ll hate you. AND, if you do not practice, they will not learn / retain the command / behavior.

For Christ sake!, Why do some people have so many trouble to understand that positive reinforcement and positive punishment are two sides of a coin, they balance each other out, don't exclude each other. A punishment, proportionate to the seriousness of the bad behavior, is a means of giving valuable information. People still have the misconception that punishment equals abuse, as long as this idea doesn't change it always will be bad behaved and uncontrollable dogs. The punishment is a way to inform the dog has done something unacceptable, and that can't be conceived through positive reinforcement. I don't care how many "scientific" studies and research say otherwise, anyone who has ever handled difficult dogs knows this, different is if they say it open and honestly.
@Yago Vila, I agree. At 61,I found my self the proud owner of a GSD mix, a larger dog than I had ever had. I had to change the way I did things. I discovered Upstate and agree with the philosophy. If you don't correct the negative behavior, it won't go away! You don't have to beat it, or electrocute it out of your dog to get your point across! I like the choice of vibrating stimulation or buzz with the collar he uses. I've only had to use the actual buzz on my dog three times, the vibrate maybe 15, depending on what and where we were working.
I think the word punishment is very off-putting for folks. A correction is not punishment, it's clear communication that specific behavior is not acceptable.
@@crownofhair you can call it as you please, but the concept is the same. You can apply a harsh or severe correction, and trust me sometimes is necessary to do it, and you could be applying a punishment. To me a punishment is a correction that had to be taken up a notch because the dog refused to listen and should never be applied out of frustration or anger but only aiming to convey to the dog the idea that it must listen for its own good because not doing it may be fatal for him, he could be run over, attacked by other dog, bit by a snake or whatnot. But nowadays everything must be politically correct and everyone has to disguise their true feelings and thoughts with euphemisms, otherwise we risk to be publicly scolded and criticized.

You have to hold your dog accountable if you want them to have good habits and behave well - consistency is key! The owner in this video was too caught up in how he thought his dog _might be feeling_ to realize he was sabotaging his dog's good behavior. It took very little correcting for this dog to understand what was expected of him. Anthropomorphizing our animals facilitates unhealthy pet-human relationships and problem behavior. This dog will be much happier in a world with clear boundaries and communication.

This is the exact reason I know that I could never do your job. I do not have the patience for people who have an inability to listen! Probably why I love dogs so much. B
I had a wolfdog come in with a serious bite history. Went for me as they took him out of the car. I got them to replace his harness with a slip and put a muzzle on, took the dog and corrected, said ‘down’ and he went straight down and never did it again, to anyone. They were surrendering as after working with a behaviourist they were told to pts. I was his last chance. I asked them, after the down, have you ever told him ‘no’…they looked at me blankly and shook their heads. So this protective and territorial, what turned out to be lovely intelligent dog, was sentenced to death because no one ever told him what was unacceptable.
I worked with him for a time, then rehomed with a lovely couple where he lived until he passed away last year, with no incidents whatsoever. People like this drive me nuts.
Hi from Australia. An observation on dog owners in regard to holding the leash. As when riding a horse, the reins are to be lightest connection to the mouth of the horse. I see so many of your clients that will not let the leash loose, it's like they want to steer and guide all the time. Love your work and patience.
Hi! You’re totally right. Having constant pressure on the leash is not good. Let me explain it from a dog owners view. I got lucky with my first dog and she literally trained herself. When I got my second dog,oh boy, was I not prepared. She ended up being a very reactive and eventually aggressive dog. Being naive of this behavior and not knowing what else to do, I would wrap that leash around my hand a million times and hold on for dear life expecting a catastrophe around every corner. Unfortunately, it happened more and more often. By the time I decided I had to do something or something bad was going to happen I was already trained to expect something bad. It was the hardest thing for me to relax. Eventually I did and I trained my dog. Now I help other people with their reactive dogs. I have to say, that having been through my own experience has made me more empathetic when people do that. I try to make them understand that they are in a controlled environment and eventually they do relax. It takes a few reps of their dog not reacting “like they usually do” before people can loosen up. Keep in mind that these are usually adult dogs that already have “problem” (even if it’s not reactive but just unwanted) behaviors. Hope that helps explain it! 🍀
Really liked the seat belt analogy for the e-collar and wearing the seat belt but not USING the seat belt hardly ever. When you do have to USE either of them, you'll be more than happy you had them!
This is typical example of living more generations in one house with dog(s) :-( . Usually parents (or grandparents) ruin your dog training. Its shame my mum cant speak english well that I could show her this vid for understanding. But Tom is great as always. Tom you have my gratitude for teaching me to use "tools"wich I was afraid to use! Thank you so mutch!

@꧁Y͜͡u͜͡k͜͡i͜͡꧂ Yep, I've been harassed by off leash dogs on an equestrian trail. It was dangerous for everyone. Took the owners *way* too long to finally get control of their dogs... if you can't recall your dog reliably don't let them off leash people ffs!

I have been binge watching your videos for 2 days now
My 5 month old lab Ragnar has the same issue at times with getting impatient with food. When he barks at me I literally just stop what I’m doing and walk away. He finally got the message this morning and went outside while I finished making his licki mat. Being firm is not being mean.
I like how there's no judgement, just pointing out the facts. A dog that gets away with behaviour you don't want/like isn't doing anything bad because they don't know its bad.
That and the sulking, they've evolved to do that because they instinctively know the big apes love puppy eyes and then let me off...that's definitely more of a layman's way of explaining it and isn't the case all of the time (depending on both individual dog and owner, and the breed), but if when he sulks and gets away with it that's reinforcing his way of getting what he wants.
I understand where the guy is coming from, it can be really frustrating trying to train a dog or dogs when there is someone in the house consciously or unconsciously getting in the way or ruining things.
Good job for these two getting the help they need instead of ignoring the problem 👏👍 it can be embarrassing asking for help because then "why get a dog in the first place?" Itd be more shameful and embarrassing allowing things to continue and worsen. If Enzo was an aggressive dog then him getting away with things becomes far more dangerous, even now if he doesn't listen 50% of the time then he could get himself, another dog, or a person hurt.

Your videos is so helpfull i have a brown border collie that is 5 months old and he knows place.sit.down.stay and all hes bad habbits like jumping is gone and i am busy trying to teach him to heal and we are making such good progress thanks to you
So common with 80% of my clients. Consistency, clear communication, and that follow through are absolutely imperative to set the dogs and humans up for success. Also not getting complacent with adolescent dogs! I must have this conversation at least 3 or 4 times a week where people say that their dog "knows" the word off or no, but sometimes just doesn't listen and barks or jumps anyways. Clearly whatever the unwanted behavior that they are doing is more reinforcing than what the human has to alternatively offer. Then I come to find out that since they were 8 weeks old they used those words and commands all the time however, they have never done it, or rarely done it enforcing their cue with the leash or some kind of positive punishment 😆. So ultimately, it is so inevitable that the dog holds no value in those verbal commands. The same thing can happen with positive reinforcement as well. I have seen many dogs tune owners out as well when they do not always follow up their "yes'' or their verbal with some sort of reward. It definitely works both ways. Totally agree. Sharing this video with my clients because you're excellent at compressing important information in a short amount of time in a way every human can understand, with patience and mindfulness, but just blunt enough to get the humans to admit it's their doing...the dogs don't become demanding or non-compliant all on their own! They gravitate to what is most reinforcing, or what has been allowed to be rehearsed over and over without any accountability. As you preach, NOBADDOGS 😉
The way you use the psychology about dogs for the humans to understand and even apply the way a dogs mind works towards the humans in such a respectable way makrs me want to watch more and more.
I’m big into how and why we all do what we do. I teach people with children the same things you teach about dogs. Then I heard a video of yours where you talks about pets versus kids….. maybe you need to be the next super daddy for the kids of America. No one wants to use corrections, and kids have become so self obsessed it’s having such a negative impact on the world. Your baby is a very lucky little one to have a father who truly gets it.
I know we all love our pets that are like family but I can’t stand people who are toooooo soft and baby them. I know for a lot of people it’s hard for them to be firm when it comes to boundaries and obedience but it’s so so important.
Quick story, my sister and I train her Great Dane as a puppy and we both are very different when it comes to training. For this example, she is like the guy in this video and I was more like Tom and I would explain to my sister that we can’t let her get what she wants because she’s gonna be a giant and we need to keep her in control. But as we train her she would get confused like in this video because there are 2 different people telling her what to do. It was very frustrating but in the end I stopped helping my sister train her pup because she didn’t want to follow or consider why this and that is important. I know I shouldn’t have stopped training her pup but I didn’t want to put the pup in between our disagreements so I decided to just let it go.
This is a perfect example why we need puppy classes or any training to benefit our pups! Every video in this channel has so much knowledge even if it’s a 10 min video.
My mom is soft like this. It drives me nuts. Her dog doesn't listen bc of it. I hate being around their crazy show bc my mom says "No..." very softly like she is asking and then wonders why her dog never listens. It's maddening 🤦🏻♀️

Excellent. I see this all the time, its much more relevant to try to fix the general relationship with the dog and owner than paying attention to individual issues most of the time. No bad dogs is truly accurate.

I just can’t with these 100% positive trainers. (like they will not even say no… if a dog has unwanted barking you just throw treats at it to help him feel more positive about the situation and distract him - that’s literally what a so-called trader told me 🤦♀️ talk about creating a monster)
Communication, real communication with our dogs inherently is composed of positive and negative reinforcement
It’s honestly hard to listen to this dude. I feel like Tom is being very clear on what needs to happen and he just isn’t paying attention or chooses not to listen and expects his dog to be immediately fixed by Tom when they leave. I think he’s assuming that the dog needs to be fixed and he’s doing everything right just because he’s sweet on his dog. Some people just don’t understand that every dog is capable of being obedient and that the owner is actually the one who needs to be trained before the dog can be trained.

I got frustrated just listening to them. It's like they didn't even know for themselves what they really wanted him to do..... Smh... But once again you training the owners lol... And you can always tell when someone isn't actively listening because their response almost always starts with "yeah but" or "OK but".... Grrrr!!! Just listen to what Tom is saying, or "listen to the words coming out of my mouth" .... Lol .. He's an adorable dog.... Thank you for helping him with his pawrents.....

I wish I had a easy happy golden like this. She learns so fast and is happy to please. My German Shepherd is tough. Needs hard core training. Which I am doing, although a golden like this would have been much easier for me.
Do you have a video on how to train a dog not to bark at people or animals that they see and to keep them from barking to get their owners attention? My dog barks for these reasons inside and outside the house and I don't know how to stop this behavior.

Truthfully. Either teach the dog and "toughen them up" to realize its not harsh punishment, just a correction.

Chile this man is all over the place. LISTEN TO TOM! If you want a good off-leash dog then follow what he's saying. You're not being mean to the dog. Correcting the dog makes both of your lives easier.
I just adopted a terrier blend last week from the Atlanta Humane Society. Found out that he’s been a shelter dog all his life starting at 8 weeks. He's 4 months old now and he’s learned a lot within the two weeks we’ve had him. But there is more to be done. With that being said I come to these videos to listen to the expert because this is my first dog and I know nothing about training. You can't walk into a firehouse and do someone's job so don't do it with your trainer.
I was so opposed to electric collars...but I went and got one out of pure desperation, and it turned out to be the one thing that worked and it turned my whole life around. Ty, Pet Safe for making barking collars that allow the dog to learn with variable stim levels that increase as the dog continues to ignore and then resets to the lowest setting after the dog listens. An e collar that automatically does the same thing would allow trainers to not have to vary levels and may be a game changer for some dogs.

Yes, nature gives freedom and boundaries! Frankly speaking, off- leash is overatted. Long line within urban setting, minimum 3.5 meters. Allows freedom and control.
Hey Tom! Your work is amazing! You do a magnificent job at educating the community. Have you ever tried a “behavioral down?”, usually used for anxious or “excitable dogs”. I’ve recently learned what this technique is but haven’t seen it used in any current videos.

This was difficult to watch. Bless you for your patience and skill set. I am much too direct with my owners because of refusal to continue to repeat myself. Higher functioning/comprehension from my client base ……pleeeezzzze. Sigh….

They have such a good dog lol. He's clearly very receptive to learning. People amaze me. Any problem that dog displays is directly their fault.

The owner wants everything to be butterflies and rainbows. But that's not real life. Obedience helps the dog to be happy and everyone around him as well 😄 hopefully they can grow together understanding that.

Gosh wish you were here. I’m 66 got a standard poodle she’s 12 weeks now. and she is hell on wheels. Jumping she has tore my house up. Will not pee or poop outside in the grass
