Thank you so much, Andy! :) I totally get now why you wanted to try to steer me towards plywood over foam. It's so much easier to work with! I'll do that the next time I need to replace the core in an entire deck ;)

I thought the deck would be done with poly resin. Why did you opt for epoxy?

I was going to write amazing progress, but coming from Andy that must mean a lot more. Looking great Mads both the boat and yourself.

What a splendid assortment of sanding opportunities you've made for yourself. I'm now convinced that this whole project is conceived on the premise that you are addicted to your sander(s). You've devised this whole "buy a boat and fix it up" thing just so you can once again commence with the sanding... LOOLLOL

I sort of wish I could just let go of all of my life's current responsibilities, travel to Denmark, and work with you for pastries. I guess I'd like you to supply a nice lunch, adequate dinner, but that is all. I could use a one man pack tent for sleeping. As I live in Minnesota, USA, I know winter all too well and could deal with the cold no problem. The satisfaction one gets from seeing a job to completion and well done is tremendous. Gonna be a real nice boat.

I always estimate the length of a job, then double it. Then, it usually takes me twice as long as that 'final' estimate. But if I start out doubling the doubled estimate I finish in half that time.

She is looking very good, I was watching for your video to come out yesterday and never saw it and was wondering how it was going. That is a huge chunk of progress you have made all at once, going to be interesting to see if you can make it to the finish line in time. I think when done she will be far better than she was new, and she will be watertight. That glass came out looking really good.
One thing you might consider is instead of using the pumps, get some large disposable measuring cups and mix half a gallon at a time, way faster than mixing cups when you are just mixing resin. Then you can pour out of the container into the cup, that way you're not getting bachelors elbow from all of the pumping!

Glad to see you've made good progress. Treats for Jokull please.

Made, great job on the fiberglassing. So glad you put all layers down at once to avoid all that prep between layers of the amine blush from west epoxy. I've done years of hand layup fiberglass work and we would use a thickened mix for the fillets but we would apply just before applying the wet fiberglass so you do not have to sand it smooth. You have to be little careful not to squeeze it out but no big deal for pros liked you and Thomas.
So it looks like you will have the same design of deck edge as original ........sort of explains why they did what they did ......unless up have another plan yet to be revealed? Love the plywood deck core , good choice. Cheers Warren.

Hey Mads...LOOKING GREAT! Glad you got some help here and there. How is your dog doing? Haven't seen him in a while! As for "winter" coming...yep. Here in the Great Lakes we are preparing to pull our boats. Mine is getting pulled and put on the hard in 2 weeks. Here we shrink wrap them, drain the water, winterize the engines, and forget about them until spring.

I had checked in late last night for this week's update, it not being there, I tried again this morning....and 'Bingo'. Well done Mads for a brilliant effort, it's good to see you have some help with laying up when 'timing' is so important. Regards from EF.

Great progress.. May I suggest you get the festool rotext sander and the vacuum. It's expensive but it far better and faster. The vacuum will pick up 85% of the dust too. Also instead of using the screws washers and nuts, try drilling small holes from inside the cabin and running wood screws (drywall screws) up into the plywood to suck it down. Even if they are to long and stick up through the deck your still going to remove them.. thanks for the videos...Dave

Don't forget to schedule rest. Burnout is a real thing if you push yourself over a long period. It can creep up on you and pounce especially when you're working hard on something you love. Take it from someone who's been there.

Hi Mads! I truly enjoy your videos. You are such a happy person--you're like the Mr. Rogers of sailboat repairs. One thing I was wondering about on your fiberglassing is whether you've looked into using a vacuum pump on sections you are laying? I've seen videos of companies building things out of composites, and a vacuum is frequently used to suck out air and extra resin during the curing step.
It seems like you could build something for that using thick plastic that is taped around the edges or using a strong double-stick tape or both. You would put the release cloth on just as you do now. I can't say that I've ever seen a video where this is done against a surface as opposed to fully surrounding the item to cure. But I know this makes a big difference in the strength of the result and helps to prevent delamination.
Keep up the good work. You rock!

Hey Mads, within the last week, Kristy & I caught up on the last 9 month of fun DIY projects aboard Athena. We have been away from sailing TH-cam for a while, but are slowly recovering ;-) Anyways, it is just incredible what you have achieved with the core replacement, the hull and the port aft-cabin. You figured out so many DIY solutions to problems being thrown at you by the boat, amazing! We really learn a lot, just from watching. And also, we are very happy that things are working out well for you off the boat! 8 days till October first - you'll find our fingers crossed, that Athena will be ready for the outside world! Lots of love, Kristy & Thomas

I can only imagine how rewarding will be to see Athena ready and sailing. you are not far from the prize Mads. Always enjoy seeing your progress! Getting there!
I'm going to get a bit grammatical on you though 😬. That is the only way I've learned other languages well. And with a girlfriend in LA I assume English is a priority. You said at one point that your friends were "careless enough" to help you again. I think you meant kind enough. Careless essentially means - not concerned, not caring, inattentive. I may have misheard, but just in case. 😉 Cheers!

Hi Mads,Sorry to hear about your phone. Could you fish out the SIM card at least? I guess water is cold enough to avoid the attempt to dive for it. The tricky part with iphones is that they're not waterproof, unlike some competitors (Samsung or Sony). Probably part of a sell more phone strategy from Apple :). Anyhow, try lifeproof case for the iphone. I have mine on all the time the boat is in.GREAT Video, as always. You're a great motivation to make look trivial the things I need to fix on my own boat. Nothing can take you down. I love that attitude and the way you look at things. Keep it up. All the best,Carlos

nice pastries, and the fiber glass is not too shabby either....history lesson for me lol - Danish pastries came here to the US from Denmark (and originally were from Austria) so never thought about why we call them "Danishes" here. You look really good with the weight loss as the camera is never flattering so you must be really skinny now. But not if you keep eating those Danishes. :-)
